Rahman says the music for the lavish stage production of The Lord of the Rings opening in Toronto this month has a unique flavour due to his collaboration with Finnish folk group Varttina. Rahman had earlier composed music for Bombay Dreams - a musical about India's movie industry by Andrew Lloyd Webber that was a hit in London's West End, but struggled on Broadway. Working on the music for the stage version of J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy was challenging, Rahman told Mumbai-based DNA newspaper in an interview published Thursday. "I have been working on this for more than two years," said Rahman, adding this was the longest project he had been involved with. While the Rings stage production is not a musical, it uses music extensively and Rahman has said he was approached to bring an orchestral tone to the folk music of Varttina. The show, with a cast of nearly 60 actors, cost upward of $23 million US and opens at Toronto's Princess of Wales Theatre on March 23. Rahman said one thing the score would not have was pop music. "It was an interesting collaboration," Rahman said about working with Varttina. "To those who have heard my music before, I'd say don't expect Shakalaka Baby or Chaiyya Chaiyya." The two songs were Bollywood favourites and featured in the musical Bombay Dreams. its been long since i am putting my views in this forum..i ve not heard VV but heard GF...GF is a good album may be many wont even like it...but i loved it a lot...guys i dont know y u ppltell his music was a hit in 90s and not now...i seriously cant digest it...rang de basanthi man awesome movie and awesome songs..cant rate anything higher than this one man...wonderful songs...lukka chuppi is stilll going on on on...he is at his best always guys..pls pls pls dont compare him wit anyone...this happens every time,whenever a hj movie releases there r msgs like this in our forum...guys lets b mature enuf to accept things...jus bcos hj scores goood music wat can our boss dohe is always at his best...plss dont jump to conclusions...such a big forum like this wud have never occured if he is not producing hits for d past few years...pls b col and enjoy our boss musicarr rocks...tk careaarthi Come on come on Oh kamatchiWondering why such a mail (as below ) has not come for some time.Ramesh, if you love VV then better for you. friends, i am using DAP(download acclerator plus) for downloading through FTP sites. i recommed all of u to use it as it has an FTP browser with it. now with that u have no need to open any IE or mozilla or opera to access that site its very very useful easy.its as if u r going through windows explorer. morover downloadings will be fast.ofcourse u may use other FTP clints also if u dont want this.i think if we use such softwares (all of us) we will have no need to got to those uploading downloading sites or links. everything that we want to share can be monitored from this FTP servers. waht do u all think??? A R Rahman is riding the Rang De Basanti wave as calmly as he rode the massive flops: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero and Mangal Pandey The Rising. There are those times when the 'cool' musician chuckles like a little boy, when we ask him about recording with Lata Mangeshkar. "It was just an idea," he says, dragging the last word with a south Indian twang, and shrugging his shoulders until his neck disappears, "I thought I would sing along with her like a son's reply to a mother's voice." That's as far as he would go to admit that Luka chuppi was an indulgence.But this time around, we thank Andrew Lloyd Weber for initiating the composer in the art of interaction. In Rahman's own words, a few years ago, after the success of Bombay Dreams, "Andrew taught me that music is also about presentation, and I can't keep going into my shell." Our drilling session would have sure come up with blanks had we encountered the introvert that Rahman once was. You said you were tired of period films.I didn't say that. I said I was tired of people slotting me; just because I did period films like Mangal Pandey people got the impression I wanted to retire and go to AIR. It took four months to come up with the score for Mangal Pandey. I'm yet to be paid for Mangal Pandey.I had to be patient enough for Rang De Basanti's release, but knew that people were getting impatient. Let's talk Rang De BasantiIt feels very good. In fact, that's another period film of sorts. Rakeysh and I coordinated with each other for four years for Rang De Basanti. The only difference is that we got a new producer, which was a huge leap. Rakeysh gave me four scripts and said that he had another small idea, which turned out to be the fifth script. I told him that this is your movie. It's not a cliché. I'd never heard something like this before. I think people are lost today. Especially the younger generation. The film is almost like a coded message for the youth. How long did you take to compose the score for this one?It's the quickest score I've ever written. The initial tracks which included six to seven songs took two weeks. Initially Khalbali was recorded fully in Arabic in London, and I sent it to the team over the internet. All of them said, "What is this? Is this from our film?" Rakeysh said that we should do it in Hindi so that it grows on people and it was his idea that I sing. Rubaroo was completed only two weeks before the music released - only the mukhada was done and we did the antara later. Luka Chuppi took a week, and the background score wrapped up in 10 days. Which was the toughest?Khoon Chala was meant to be a loud track. It was all about expressing a revolutionary's thoughts. Bombay Dreams NYC South Asians make Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway musical a success On January 1, 2005, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway production of Bombay Dreams closed down after an eight-month run — not enough time for the show’s producers to recoup their $14 million investment. Most of Webber’s shows tend to run for years. The current longest running musical on Broadway, Phantom of Opera, is a Webber creation. And so was Cats, the previous record-breaking show on Broadway. But Bombay Dreams was no ordinary Webber creation. First, its music was composed by A R Rahman. And most theatre-goers in New York and tourists who are the life-blood of the city’s musicals, did not know Rahman. It was set in the world of Bollywood films and had no familiar names in the cast. And New York theatre critics were ruthless in critiquing the play. Some claimed that this was the end of Indian-themed theatre in the US. But, last month, all the naysayers were proven wrong when the Atlanta-based company, Theatre of the Stars, premiered a 15-cities national tour of Bombay Dreams in Costa Mesa in Southern California. From here the show will travel to several other US cities including Sacramento, St Louis, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Pittsburgh, Charlotte and even Toronto, Canada. The jury is still not out on how these cities will take it. But, it’s clear that American critics in general have a tough time digesting a musical set in a world totally alien to their culture. At least, Paul Hodgins of The Orange County Register (Costa Mesa is located in Orange County, just south of Los Angeles) only had problems with the staging of the current production. He wrote in his review: “(It) is only fitfully pleasant, and at times it turns into a technical nightmare — a mish-mash of bad lighting cues, inept blocking and awkward scene changes.” But look at what the New York critics said nearly two years ago when Bombay Dreams opened on Broadway. Clive Barnes of the New York Post called the show a “sari affair.” Referring to Rahman’s compositions as monotonous, he said “this overheated curry, although adapted for American tastes, may not appeal to every palate.” USA Today, The Washington Post and The Philadelphia Inquirer all recommended that theatre-goers should avoid the show. The final nail on the coffin came from the man who has the power to make or break a Broadway show — Ben Brantley of The New York Times. He called Bombay Dreams “flat and ….unengaging,” and suggested that Americans, not well-versed in the traditions of Bollywood films, will not get the show. How does one get across to a veteran critic like Barnes that Rahman is a genius in his own way. With no sense of history about Indian cinema and being totally ignorant of the way more than a billion people love to have their stories told, how could we to expect these critics to be fair to Bombay Dreams? With such scathing reviews, Bombay Dreams should have died a sudden death within a month of its opening. That is often the case with badly-reviewed shows on Broadway. But Bombay Dreams had one thing going for it. The South Asian community in the greater New York City area adopted it as if it was their own. And they came in large numbers — bringing with them grandparents, parents and even little children. They supported the show as a duty to their homeland. Many came to a Broadway show for the first time. New York City and its neighbouring areas may have the largest concentration of South Asians. But the producers of the current tour of Bombay Dreams are hoping that South Asians in other cities will also support the show, now that it will be playing in their area. I am suprised also that he actually talked about this. But then, if the story is true then the explaination is befitting and tells of the practical difficulties musicians face when they compose for a film and put so much hard work into it and they never get proper financial recognition for their work. Bobby bedi is known as a respected producer and is considering ARR for the Mahabharata, so I dont know whether he would risk not paying.but then again stranger things have happened and if the quotes are correct then ARR is nothing but fair in mentioning that four months work was no rewarded in totality. We wanted Mohit (Silk Route) to sing the track and it turned out that Prasoon had worked with the band, and everything just fell into place. You've recorded Jiya Jale with Lata Mangeshkar previously. How different was it working with her seven years later for Luka Chuppi?Lataji is more than just a voice. The whole awe of motherhood is summed up in that song because she brings a whole range of emotions to it. She's still the same extraordinary singer.
