The low-caste Beera rules the forest in “Raavan,” Mani Ratnam’s richly atmospheric adaptation of the Indian epic “The Ramayana.” Though the film takes place in the present, Mr. Ratnam’s forest remains an appropriately primeval place for mythic doings, full of fog and mists and rain and Beera’s mud-painted followers (shades of “Apocalypse Now”http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/2675/Apocalypse-Now/overview ). Raavan (Ravana in Sanskrit), as every Indian knows, is the demon in “The Ramayana” who kidnaps Sita, the wife of Rama: king, deity and model husband (as Sita is the model wife). Early on in Mr. Ratnam’s film the question is asked: Is Beera (a gleefully hammy Abhishek Bachchan) Robin Hood or Raavan? He’s both — and more a hero in this telling, set on his turf, than is the Rama character, a cop called Dev (Vikram), who matches Beera in brutality and cunning, but not in heart. “Raavan” has Bollywood glamour aplenty, with the lovely if occasionally dramatically challengedAishwarya Raihttp://movies.nytimes.com/person/232903/Aishwarya-Rai?inline=nyt-per Bachchan, Mr. Bachchan’s wife, playing the Sita stand-in. The real star, though, is Mr. Ratnam, a talented visual storyteller who directs action crisply and fills the screen with striking images. (One, of Ms. Bachchan’s falling body landing gracefully on a tree branch, is so good he uses it three times.) Artful but not arty, Mr. Ratnam, whose films include “Dil Se” and “Guru,”http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/review?_r=1res=9B00EED71F39F932A05752C0A9659C8B63 delivers the goods: There are songs and dances (A. And that, folks, is entertainment. RAAVAN Opens on Friday nationwide. In preparation, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi [ Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=m+karunanidhi ] has already released the Conference's anthem titled *Ulaga Tamizh Semmozhi Maanadu*, tuned exclusively by A R Rahman [ Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=a+r+rahman ], and filmed by director of the moment, Gautam Vasudev Menon. Sung by 30 different artists who represent the cream of Tamil industry's musical elite, the lyrics have been penned by Kalaignar Karunanidhi. Here's what the anthem has to offer: With an enthusiastic crash begins the *Semmozhiyaana Thamizh Mozhiyaam* anthem, starting out with the first Thamizh letter (the letter morphs from its earliest, centuries-old version to its present form), and the impressive words, *Pirappokkum Ella Uyirkkum*, sung by legend T M Soundarrajan after a flash of Thiruvalluvar's statue at Kanyakumari, eagerly picked up by A R Rahman himself, singing *Yaadhum Oore, Yaavarum Kelir*. Other singers like Harini, Chinmayi and Karthik follow, singing the simple phrases that make up Thamizh's long literary lineage and even as Karthik's voice rises in an impressive crescendo, the instrumental background score takes over, and the song proper begins. Montage shots of stone-etched Thamizh inscriptions flow, while Hariharan [ Images http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=hariharan ], A R Rahman and Yuvan Shankar Raja croon the song, and then the entire team of songsters take up the refrain, *Semmozhiyaana Thamizh Mozhiye* … while the words glow in the background. The beat thunders while it rises and ebbs across the musical plane. In the midst, another legend, P Susheela takes up the song, even as the Thamizh alphabet runs across the screen. Bharathanatyam dancers flit around while G V Prakash, Nithyashree Mahadevan and Sowmya show their vocal power, classical fashion. Abruptly, the song changes courses, with strains of nadhaswaran, while Blaaze suddenly jumps into the fray with Thamizh rap, bizarrely beginning *Kamba Nattazhwan* … The words sound odd and forced, but after a while, the fusion actually begins to appeal to you, courtesy the rhythm. Dazzling Thamizh letters intriguingly emerge from boiling oil as *murukkus*, while ethnic singers take up the chorus. From hereon, the jump from classical to rap occurs more frequently; the melody is unstructured, yet appealing. Thamizh's gradual ascension from stone temples to blackberrys is shown. Singers like Naresh Iyer sing in pop fashion on brightly-lout stages, while at the same time, *poi kal kudhirai * and *karakattam* dancers spin around in festivals; even Chinna Ponnu contributes. The anthem, meanwhile, rises slowly note by note, closing with a grand crescendo amidst crashing beats, even as the chief minister sits at his desk, signing documents with a flourish. The lyrics themselves are unstructured at best, and take some time getting used to but the meaning contained within the instrumental arrangement and varied vocals make it a very pleasant musical experience. Praise for Thamizh is lavishly sung, even while exploring its development through the centuries, its ability to adapt and stay within the common man's grasp without dying out, and evolving into the digital age. A R Rahman has gone with his favourite template, it seems but even when you can predict the rise and fall of notes, it's still very appealing for the swift shift in genres and style. The lyrics and picturization undoubtedly add to the allure. *Rediff Rating:* * * * * -- Regards, Uday Kiran

[arr] Home is where the heart is for Rahman - Latest Interview with AR
With two Oscars and two Grammy awards in less than a year, Indian composer A.R. Rahman of “Slumdog Millionaire” fame is riding high on his international success, but his heart still remains at home. Back in his hometown Chennai after more than a month in Los Angeles, where he now spends most of his time, Rahman spoke to Reuters about working on “We Are The World”, the charity single for quake-stricken Haiti, his experience in Hollywood and how India will never really lose its famous son. *Q: It’s been almost a year since you won the Oscar. How has your life changed? * A: “I am living more in Los Angeles and meeting a completely different set of people; very nice people of course, and things which were impossible before, such as “We are the world” — going in that community and singing there, was fantastic. I have been commissioned to do some stuff for artists, which you will hear about shortly. There is a tour also. So much has happened in one year.” *Q: You also composed music for your first Hollywood movie, “Couples Retreat”. How is working in Hollywood different from working in India? * A: “In a situation like that, anything can happen. There are a lot of committees which scrutinise the music, they hear it again and again, changes happen. The music took almost three months. I was writing and re-writing. They have research groups to whom they play the music and movie to, and take their reactions, come back. You may even get fired. It is a studio film, so anything can happen.” *Q: Did that change the way you work?* A: “No, not really, but a composer told me that in Hollywood, if a composer doesn’t get fired, he isn’t a real composer. That is the agony of working on a score there, even the most senior composers get fired. It is the easiest thing to do, fire the composer, because they can’t change the actors or the movie, but they can change the music. It’s risky.” *Q: What is the one aspect that you wish the Indian film industry could borrow from the West? * A: “I think we should think about what we are leaving for future generations. After a while, when you have achieved everything, it is time to give back. Our people are so hardworking that we can excel anywhere in the world, but they just need to open up their imaginations. We need to be original and nurture creativity. We can’t be slaves to mediocrity, and that can only happen when the right people put in the effort.” *Q: Are there any more international projects in the pipeline? There was talk of you collaborating with Celine Dion. * A: “I can’t really talk about anything at the moment, but you will hear something the minute it is finalised. Celine Dion is just a rumour.” *Q: Some rumours do turn out to be true. * A: “This could turn out to be true, but nothing like that is planned at the moment. I sang with her for “We are the World”, that is all.” *Q: Could you talk about that experience? * A: “It was great. I got a call from the organisers, asking if I was in town. I said yes, and went along for the recording. We recorded from 3 to 8, and it was an overwhelming experience, singing with all these great artists under one roof.” *Q: A lot of people in India feel that even though you won for Slumdog, that isn’t your best score. What do you think? * A: “I think it was the best score for the film. In a way it is naive for people to think like that. There is always a debate over which music is better, whether it is classical or pop, Western classical or Indian classical, and so on. But for a child, a nursery rhyme is equal to what may be classical music for us. It is the presence of mind and the eye of the beholder that matters. We got two Oscars and two Grammys for it, so it is more than enough.” *Q: Is international success something you coveted before you started out? * A: “In a naive way, yes. I wasn’t too ambitious about it, but it was always in a corner of my mind, that what we do here should be appreciated by the rest of the world. We like their music, but we also have representation in the world stage, and that has come true, which is great. In a small way, there are many more miles to go, but it is a great start. It is not only a good start for me, but also anyone, whether you are in a village, and are making music, if it needs to be heard, it will be heard.” *Q: So much is being said about the fact that India has lost Rahman to Hollywood. Has it? * A: “Oh, they say that every three years, they want to pack me off. I have a responsibility here, and my family is here, so these things will always pull me back here, wherever I may be. This is my base, I will keep coming back.” http://www.khaleejtimes.com/Displayarticle08.asp?section=newsmakersxfile=data/newsmakers/2010/February/newsmakers_February46.xml -- Regards, Uday Kiran
[arr] Graduates of A R Rahman’s school of music churn ou t chartbusters
Debutant Johan, who has graduated from the A.R. So impressed was director Murugaiah with this newbie composer’s skills that he offered him to score music for his debut flick “Kurunila Mannargal’. Director Cheran released the film’s audio recently at Sathyam Cinemas. Apparently, now with the songs of “Kurunila Mannargal’ doing extremely well at audio markets, music director Johan has won more offers in tinsel town. On his fourth visit to the country, this time for personal reasons, Luhrmann said, “Visiting here is cathartic. Now I have to figure out how to use all I have seen and experienced.” * *As an artist he believes he can exploit any medium. “I can paint or maybe tell a story or make a film. There is no end to creativity; everything is part of the process and this can help me create something in my films too.” Had he watched any Indian films? “Yes I saw ‘Lagaan’ and I think Aamir Khan is a fine actor.” Meanwhile he is looking forward to collaborating with A.R. An awesome review, but not explaining about Mannipaya is lamentable and left a bit of sadness! Thanks a lot Gopal Bro for sharing this! On 30 January 2010 20:02, Gopal Srinivasan catchg...@gmail.com wrote: Missing the Mark BY SUMITA SAMI http://nazaronline.net/author/sumita_sami/ 29 JANUARY 2010 142 VIEWS 8 COMMENTS http://nazaronline.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/204b8_vinnaithandi-varuvaaya-2.jpg “What is this?” asked a befuddled friend, when I gave her a link to A. R. Rahman’s latest soundtrack. “Harris Jayaraj?” And that was when I wondered if the maestro had, perhaps, missed the mark this time. I don’t mean to imply that Jayaraj isn’t a great musician in his own right, but Academy Award winner Rahman simply composes in a different plane of music. Which was why *Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya* is a let-down - although flashes of his genius are present, the album as a whole is unmemorable. Some songs are peppy enough to escape that judgement. *Anbil Avan* works with a simple but effective melody and Chinmayi’s perfect high notes. The rhythm, with its interplay of the mridangam, is particularly good. I hadn’t thought much of this song at first, but then I found myself replaying it again and again. Rahman experiments with sounds in *Hosanna*, and the track, combining a gentle yearning with Blaaze’s rapping, mostly succeeds. I didn’t see why Vijay Prakash (whose *Manmohini Morey* is frankly brilliant), had to be squandered here, but I can see why his voice is eminently suitable for * Hosanna*. The title song is, for the most part, lovely. *Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya* uses Karthik’s vocals and some excellent guitar work to create an achingly tender track. Halfway through, however, Rahman switches to a more conventional melody that seems to lose the melancholy - and the novelty - of the first half. *Aaromale* is perhaps the track that most thoroughly embodies Rahman’s style of music-making. It’s deliberately non-Indian in its use of the guitar, with the kind of menace you might find in spaghetti Westerns - especially when the beat picks up towards the end. Somehow, the electric guitar riffs, Alphons Joseph’s voice, and the Malayalam lyrics come together to make something darkly interesting. The rest of the soundtrack didn’t make much of an impression. *Omana Penne * is sweet, even charming, but Rahman displays an unhealthy obsession with auto-tune that detracts from that a little. Also similar is *Kannukul Kannai*, which begins promisingly enough with a smooth violin chorus, but then has little left to offer. Even Naresh Iyer’s vocals seem indistinguishable from the other male singers. And about the only opinion I had of *Mannipaaya* was that it was nice - Shreya’s vocals are crystal clear, and Rahman’s voice makes for a great contrast, but beyond the opening melody I couldn’t find myself liking it much. *Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya* is billed as “another unique love story”, its posters drawing inspiration from at least four hit movies in the past decade. Perhaps director Gautham Menon desired the same effect with the soundtrack - in which case he should have employed a composer more drawn to the conventional. Rahman’s songs do have a reputation for growing on the listener, but right now I’m not holding my breath. The music of A. R. Rahman is usually a combination of the bizarre, beautiful, and bold. Not much of any of this is present in *Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya* - which is why this soundtrack is ultimately disappointing. http://nazaronline.net/arts/2010/01/missing-the-mark/ -- Regards, Uday Kiran

[arr] Experimental in nature, the album Vinnaithandi Varuvaya exudes freshnes......
Music: A R Rahman Lyrics: Thamarai Label: Sony Music Rating: 3.5/5 Anticipations have been high for A R Rahman’s music in Gautham Menon’s Vinnaithandi Varuvaya as this is the first Tamil album composed by the maestro after he bagged the Academy awards, Bafta and Golden Globe honours last year. Expectations increase all the more as Thamarai has penned the lyrics for the album. Vinnaithandi Varuvaya is packed with impressive tracks by the acclaimed musician but is dominated by western influences, which might not go down too well with the audiences. But the album is a sure treat for music lovers looking for experimental music. Here’s a walk through the tracks in the album- *Mannipaya -* Mannipaya is a melodious track with Shreya Ghoshal and Rahman on the mike. Although you are hooked to flawless vocals of the singers, you can’t miss the orchestration which stands out in the track. The perfect blend of music arrangements with the keyboard, piano, flute, chorus and the vocalists would definitely hook music lovers. *Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya -* The album has a great title track Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya rendered by Karthik. The free flowing guitar in the background blends naturally with the vocals - yet both seem to have their own character. The music and vocals seem to be competing throughout the track, often outdoing each other. *Hossana -* This track is bound to have a mass appeal with its contemporary arrangements and rap portions rendered by Blaaze. Vijay Prakash is at his best and the track starts on a melodious note with Prakash, enters the rap- hip hop mode with Blaaze and Prakash again brings back the melody bit. Suzzane D’Mello’s humming in the background makes the song even more likable. *Kannukkul Kannai -* The violin is a prominent instrument in this track dominated by western music influences. Rahman displays his flair for western music with this track sung brilliantly by Naresh Iyer. But it is a mediocre track and nothing about it grips you even after repeated hearings. This is not the track I would look forward to in the album. *Aaoromale -* Passionate singing by Malayalam music director Alphonse Joseph and amazing guitar play make the song grow on you after the first hearing itself. A Malayalam track with a feel of country music, Aaromale is an experimental track by Rahman. The song has a perfect fusion of western and Indian music with violin interludes along with base instrument - guitar. Alphonse has composed for Malayalam films including Pachamarathanalil, Jalolsavam and is a regular band member of Rex Band, a prolific guitarist and a carnatic classical vocalist. *Anbil Avan -* Sung by Devan Ekambaram and Chinmayi, Anbil Avan is a peppy song with nothing exceptional. With some spellbound tracks in the album, Anbil Avan falls much below the expectations. *Omana pene -* Benny Dayal does what he is best at in this rhythmic song. Kalyani Menon’s voice surprises as, just when you conclude that it is a male song, Menon surfaces beautifully. Another surprise in the track is the traditional nadaswaram towards the end which gives an altogether different essence to the track. Experimental in nature, the album Vinnaithandi Varuvaya exudes freshness. My pick in the album includes Hossana which would go well with the audiences, Alphonse Joseph owes Rahman for beautiful composition- Aaoromale and Mannipaya. http://www.radioandmusic.com/content/reviews/film-music-reviews/vinnaithandi-varuvaya#story http://www.radioandmusic.com/content/reviews/film-music-reviews/vinnaithandi-varuvaya#story -- Regards, Uday Kiran

Very good news Gopal , pleasure to know this. Awaitng for an awesome output of BOSS's master work in 2010 Nov-Dec. Thanks for sharing this. 2009/12/16 Gopal Srinivasan catchg...@gmail.com Water-ing hole Shekhar's Paani is ready to roll in Spain By Subhash K Jha Posted On Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 02:40:33 AM Shekhar Kapoor flew into Chennai earlier this month to record his first song for Paani, officially flagging off his first feature film undertaking since the sequel to Elizabeth two years ago. Says Shekhar, “Paani is now completely on. We start shooting in April 2010. We're at a pre-visualisation stage. And I needed Rahman's song for that. Since it is located in a futuristic city, I've artistes in Los Angeles, Singapore and India creating my city.” While the film is set in futuristic Mumbai, Shekhar plans to shoot in Spain. “I've had a big offer from Spain to shoot the film in their country. They too are fascinated by the water theme. It's a massive project. Otherwise it wouldn't interest me.” The film will star newcomers in the lead. Says Shekhar, “The girl has to be a 17-year old French-Canadian who lives in the Upper City (the posh area) of Mumbai. And the young Indian boy is a desi Leonardo DiCaprio who's a water revolutionary.” The film is a forbidden love story. “The girl's father is the global head of a water company. We need another girl, a smouldering entertainer like Shakira, who's a big star in the Upper and the Lower City. Then there's an Oracle called Amma.” Shekhar will cast the hero from India while the girl will be cast internationally. He swears he hasn't decided a single member of the vast cast as yet. “You know I had planned whole schedules of Elizabeth and I hadn't found the actress to play the lead. And since Elizabeth wasn't cast, no one else was. The studios were getting frantic with worry. We tested a hundred actresses. I wasn't the least worried. I knew I'd find my Elizabeth. I saw two shots of Cate Blanchett in a film no one had seen and I decided on her. The most difficult actor to cast was Richard Attenborough. Likewise I'm not worried about Paani.” The spoken language of Paani would be English. But there will be a dubbed Hindi version. “Even the characters of the Lower City would be speaking English. Slumdog Millionaire has proved that language is no barrier. Even though all the Indians spoke English, the language didn't come in the way of credible self-expression. I will have a dubbed Hindi version too.” Paani will be readied in time for the Venice Film Festival in 2011. Harris Jayaraj seems a bit tired on that front, but that’s not stopping him from turning to his first love — musichttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/4906395.cms#. His songs in Vaaranam Aayiram came in for a lot of praise and going by the hard work he’s put in, that’s the same result that he’s expecting for his tunes in the upcoming Suriya-starrer Aadhavan. And, he’s just waiting for the album to hit the stores. “There’s a surprise for my fans in it,” he starts off, “The album will be a treat to the ears. I’ve used Dr Burn for a rap bit that’ll have the youth on their feet.” But, that’s not all — in the craze for composing peppy tunes, the affable musician hasn’t forgotten the old-world charm associated with yesteryear singers. “I’ve also gotten Mano to sing a songhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/4906395.cms#for me... now, how’s that,” he asks, with a twinkle in his eyes. It could well be coincidence, but Harris has been scoring for a lot of Suriya movies. Harris expects the music of Aadhavan to be as popular as his Ayan, if not better. So, what’s the connection between Suriya and soulful music? “There’s some connection there, I think,” he muses, pondering for a minute, “Actually, when it comes to Suriya, he’s able to translate my songs well on-screen. His expressions and moves add value to the songs that I compose.” So, like Suriya, is Harris a romantic at heart too? “No, not at all,” he smiles, “I’m more of a spiritual person these days. My romance is with God.” It’s on that same note that he talks about his once-favourite director Gautham Menon, with whom he worked on Vaaranam Aayiram. “Anyone will want to work with Gautham,” is all he has to say when asked if he’ll work with the Kaakha Kaakha filmmaker again, “He gave me a chance to try out a dappankuthu type of a number in his film (Anjala...) and I’ll never forget that.” Does he feel that he ought to have got Vinnaithaandi Varuvayaa, a project in which Gautham joins hands with A R Rahman? “Not at all,” he states, “I’m sure that this new combination will rock.” Will he want to sign Gautham’s next film at least? “It’s not in my hands,” he says, shrugging his shoulders, “God gives me a decision when it has to be made and that’s how it works. I have no say in my decisions.” Philosophers, take a bow! http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/4906395.cms -- regards, Vithur -- Regards, Uday Kiran
Re: [arr] Rahman to open studio in Los Angeles
Congrats sir for 'New Panchathan Recording Inn' and waiting for new projects of movies and studios too. 2009/8/15 Sreekrishnan R rahmanfe...@yahoo.co.uk * http://blog.taragana.com/n/rahman-to-open-studio-in-los-angeles-139501/ * Oscar winner A. R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) is developing studios in Los Angeles (USA) and London (UK), according to reports. He reportedly already has studios in India in Chennai and Mumbai. With him going international, this will facilitate him to work with his music teams in Los Angeles and London. He reportedly said recently that he was in the middle of getting loans sanctioned for the project. Welcoming Rahman’s move of opening studios in the West, acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed said that this would create more avenues to spread Indian music in the world and more opportunities for musicians of the West to indulge in the richness of musical traditions of India. Rahman, also known as Oscar winner John Williams (Schindler’s List) of Indian movie industry, launched his first studio for mixing-recording music attached to his backyard in Chennai in 1992. Starting piano training at age four, he began working at 11 as a keyboardist with a music troupe. His about 3,000 square-foot recording studio in Chennai named A. M. Studios and described as “tranquil oasis”, is developed by “Studio 440” of Hollywood (USA) and took about three years to finish, whose skillful design blends traditional materials with modern technology. Rahman, who has reportedly recorded sales of over 300 million, was called “Mozart of Madras” by Time magazine. Rahman sees music “as a way to connect to spirituality and embrace it” and for “creating harmony in troubled times”. Re: [arr] Oru Kanavin Isai (ARR's biography in Vikatan) - Week 16 - Scans and Translation
Sukhwinder. The song was played repeatedly in many FM radio stations in the UK, and it spread throughout Europe. Noted Romanian film critic, Mihail Cirilov, who is also the creative director of Transilvania International Film festival, says “When I first listened to *Chaiyya Chaiyya, *I felt very fresh! It was what one would call ‘Ear Candy’. I didn’t like it instantly. But on repeated listening, it created a fresh state of mind. It was a very modern music. It was a song which blended Indian music with modern world music”. Later, this same person listened to *Lagaan* songs and became a huge fan of Rahman. He talks passionately about Rahman - “I know a lot about bollywood music. But, one man took it to a new level single handedly, and that was Rahman”. Rahman’s style of developing a song layer by layer using computers baffled the Bollywood composers. Some purists in music industry criticized this style. Rahman responded – “We are in 21st Century. Some do not want to leave their 19th century practices. I don’t understand what’s wrong in infusing latest technology into music. The computer which I got about 6 months back, takes 3 minutes to make. The computer which I’ve got recently can be made in just 3 seconds. World is moving so fast, shouldn’t we too run at the same pace? I can carry my music on a small hard disk as I travel through out the world. I get a chance to blend world music during those tours. Technology is like a huge beast. We should understand how to tame it and bring it under our control. It took me two years to ‘tame’ the music software and bring it under my control!” True! Rahman doesn’t carry his studio alaong when he travels. He just carries a small hard disk which has various software and his music. Be it London, New York or Paris – wherever he goes, the hard disk travels along. He can plug it onto a computer and start composing, and can send the music as audio files to his Kodambakkam studio through email. IT magazine *Express Computing* says Rahman is the most knowledgeable Indian composer when it comes to latest in music and technology. Rahman was the first to bid farewell to tapes used for recording. He’s also the first composer to compose a song on his flight journey. He’s the one who turned a recording studio to a technology park! Apple Macs are his favourite. World over Apple computers are the most preferred systems for many musicians. In Rahman’s studio, there are 12 Power Macs in his studio, 2 Power Book Laptops, and iBooks. (Rahman upgrades his computers and music instruments frequently. So, these could be different now!). A musical recording can be edited lakhs of times in these systems. Rahman often says “This is not just a machine. It has an attitude of its own!” Rahman, who currently uses Apple 3G processors, is soon going to upgrade to the next generation. The systems in Rahman’s studio are not networked. Each system is a kingdom on its own. The music processing that is done on each system is then combined mixed in one system. Rahman himself has designed this system, like an expert computer engineer. Ok.. all this is technology. But, apart from this, Rahman believes there’s one more factor, which is the secret of his success… What could that be? Re: [arr] Ooh la la la… The Winner takes it all!
Thanks for this info bro. and very happy anniversary to BOSS, faculty and our friends(students). 2009/8/12 Vithur vith...@gmail.com Ooh la la la… The Winner takes it all! Ooh la la la… Do you have music in you– was an opportunity that both excited and challenged the ‘Best of the next’ Tamil and Telugu bands. It beckoned every musician who aimed to make it big and enthrall one and all… And out they came, performed and conquered. Championed by The Mozart of Madras himself, Oscar winner, A.R.Rahman, Ooh La La La, a nationwide band talent hunt, aimed at bringing out the hidden talent of musicians worldwide and gave them a platform to perform. Breaking free of the clutter, the bands were tested for ‘originality’, ‘ability to perform live’, ‘skills to develop and produce new sounds and melodies’ qualities that really distinguish the best from the rest. Ooh La La La soon caught the fancy of all Sun TV Prime time viewers having been implemented as ground event in fourteen cities. The budding Bands performed with soul and gusto while Rahman and other judges, all lead musicians were mesmerized. Conventions were challenged when all the six finalist bands, Zinx, Oxygen, V3, Agam, Madras Tunes and Shrishti were crowned the winners for Tamil and all three finalist bands, Catharsis, Band of Boys and Audio League were crowned the winners for Telugu. Thus, the show did what Saregama and Rahman do best, make History! Part of the spoils is an album by Saregama, which has tracks performed by all the winners! It’s been recorded at A.M. Studios (of Jai ho fame) and is all set to be launched on, 7th August 2009. This date is also the 1st anniversary of A.R. Rahman’s school of music, KM Conservatory, initiated with his vision to take Indian musicians and singers to a global level. Thus aptly on this date, A.R. Rahman and Saregama, (erstwhile HMV India), are initiating a project aimed at generating a ‘Need for Learning’ among Children. Across the world, Education has the emerged as the single biggest weapon to combat poverty. Our endeavor is to create a Love for Learning among Kids as young as toddlers. The project, titled “Sing Along Rhymes with A.R.Rahman, comprises of a volume of Nursery Rhymes, a special song on the them “Learning is Fun”. The music is composed by KM Conservatory, Music Supervised by A.R.Rahman, and Produced by Saregama India Limited. http://www.realbollywood.com/news/2009/08/ooh-la-la-la.html -- regards, Vithur -- Regards, Uday Kiran

Re: [arr] Oru Kanavin Isai (ARR's biography in Vikatan) - Week 14 - Scans and Translation
are not given due recognition in Bollywood, and are referred to as Madarasis. Many wonderfully talented South-Indian artistes couldn’t survive there for long, because of this bias. Two men broke this jinx – Mani Ratnam and A.R.Rahman. When *Rangela* album was released, the musicians in Bombay waited with bated breath to know how the album would fare. With in just a few hours, the result was there for everyone to see – HIT! After ages, movie theatres in Mumbai wore a festive look – it was for the release of Rangeela. Celebrations happened in theatres. Songs *like ‘Rangeela Re’, ‘Tanha Tanha’* and *‘Kya Karein’ *made the entire theatre danced for the songs. Ram Gopal Verma’s amazing film-making, Aamir Khan’s acting and Urmila’s skin-show welcomed Rahman’s music to Bollywood. The audio sales of *Rangeela *surpassed that of *Bombay. * Other bollywood composers were totally shaken by the scintillating applause in theatres when Rahman’s name appeared on the screen. Veteran Singer Asha Bhosle was away from limelight as she hadn’t got enough opportunities in movies in mid-90s. Then Rangeela happened. *Tanha Tanha* had the innocence of a child. At the same time, it also had a sultry, sexy feel to it. The song became a mega hit. The success of Rangeela made Rahman being pushed into the front in all bollywood functions and in media events. This was a new trend in bollywood. The success of *Rangeela* made distributors want to release the film in Tamil too. But, the Tamil audience can’t be pulled to theatres by projecting the names of Aamir Khan or Ram Gopal Verma in ads, and the distributors were left wondering how to advertise this movie in Tamil. Then came the posters with the caption – “A.R.Rahman’s first SUPER HIT hindi music”. Rangeela rocked even Tamil Nadu, and there’s no doubt that it was because of Rahman. Rangeela opened up great avenues for Rahman in Bollywood. Bollywood composers who were copying Rahman’s Tamil tunes till then, were shattered by Rahman’s entry into Hindi films. The only choice they had, was to accept Rahman as a part of bollywood and to compete with him. Accepting him was fine, but could they compete with him – this was their only doubt! Understanding that he had established himself at the national level, he announced that he would charge Rs. 1 Crore for his next project. That was an amount, which other Tamil composers couldn’t even dream of, in those days. But, bollywood producers lined up with their cash-suitcases in front of Rahman’s house! Others who couldn’t afford Rahman could do only one thing – sign up some other composer, and instruct him to “compose songs like Rahman’s”! Funnily enough, there were many composers who were willing to do that! Asha Bhosle fondly remembers how Rahman brought her back to limelight through Rangeela – “His music brought in freshness to films. He keeps experimenting with music. He is a reflection of the younger generation. He has created a new revolution in Hindi film music. Any singer is energized by his music. That’s what happened me to.” After Rangeela, many legends were waiting for Rahman! (to be continued)** Cheers, Aravind -- Rahmania show interviews: http://rahmania.4shared.com -- -- Love Cricket? our trips and start hunting for air tickets and accommodation.” Normally, the resident members of the city where Rahman is scheduled to perform are sounded out about the group’s plans. “These people then work to organise our trips, arrange for our stays, sometimes in their homes. And then we assemble at the concert venue, dress in a common uniform (black T-shirts) that we’ve designed for ourselves, sing along with Rahman and his team through the concert and generally have a blast,” Upadhye says. Of late, the group has even looked beyond Rahman’s concerts to do a bit of do-gooding. “Some of us in Bangalore get together on Sundays to do community service and we hand out food packets to the needy,” says Srinivasan. “On Rahman’s birthday, we sponsor lunches in old age and children’s homes,” he adds. Then there are occasional meetings in different cities when the group gets together to discuss music, or as Bangalore IT professional Arun K.B. puts it, to cheer Rahman on in his quest for glory. “When he won his Golden Globe, we met for coffee at a Café Coffee Day outlet to celebrate,” says Arun. “Then, on Oscar night, we hired an entire lounge bar in Bangalore, where 30 of us walked in at 6 am to watch the Oscar ceremony. When Rahman got the Oscars, it was like a madhouse inside. Everyone went crazy!” he exclaims. Some might say that’s going one notch too far in the name of fanfare. Re: [arr] Oru Kanavin Isai (ARR's biography in Vikatan) - Week 11 - Scans and Translation
What can I say abt u? Keep posting bro!! 2009/6/18 Aravind AM aravind...@yahoo.com Hi all, Here are this week's scans I just realised that Flickr no longer allows downloading of full size images! So, I've uploaded this week's scan in Photobucket too. Will upload the other ones too, in photobucket and post later. Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aravind_am/3636857523/ Photobucket: http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n260/aravind_am/W11P01.jpg Week 11 Technology in music is as important as the music itself. In those days, Indian music fans were longing to get crystal clear sound quality in Indian music, which could only be experienced in western songs. They’d got bored of listening to Indian music in mono-tones. Roja which released with superior recording quality, and the they were all thrilled. They wondered how Rahman brought about such a tremendous improvement in sound quality. Roja was dubbed into various languages, and was a huge success everywhere. After 18 years of the release, it has been dubbed into English for the international audience. One of the most important reasons for this is A.R.Rahman. “Singing with Rahman is always a new experience. Nothing is ready when we go to recording. He keeps composing the basic chords and feeding them. It will all be incomprehensible initially. But, within a few minutes, we can feel the magic as we get transported to another world when listening to it on headphones. His music inspires us to try new things. He gives complete freedom to all musicians and singers, and picks and chooses from the best of the recordings. I’ve not seen this technique being used by anyone else”, says singer Srinivas. Post the success of Roja, producers started queuing up in front of Rahman’s house, to sign him up for their next projects. This was a new experience for Rahman himself. He was overwhelmed by the reach of this medium. He understood the power of film industry as it took his music to millions of fans. He also realized whey Naushad kept advising him to enter the film industry. “I was happy that I could create a new sound pattern – a new stamp for myself, in my movie itself. I believe that it is all God’s grace and Mani sir’s guidance that have helped in introducing this style of music as ‘Rahman’s style’ to the music buffs”, says Rahman. Mani Ratnam was elated by the stupendous success of Roja. “When I signed up Rahman for *Roja, *my intention was not to uplift Rahman or his career. All my thoughts were focused on the music for my film. The sample music that he gave me was excellent. I didn’t think of the successes he would get in future. The only thing, which struck me then, was that he was the best person to compose music for Roja. I His new way of thinking, and his desire to break the traditions and try new things impressed me. I was looking for some one like that. He acted as a bridge between Indian music and the world technology. He didn’t accept the several offers that he got, after Roja. He didn’t want to get into that usual routine followed in the film industry – reach the studio by 8.30 am, and complete at least one *pallavi* by noon. He wanted to bring in a new style in composing and recording. In the west, most composers had a recording studio of their own. Similarly, Rahman also had set up his own studio in his house, and he started composing only from there. The musicians and singers who came there for recordings, got a sweet surprise as they were not used to the new style of recording. They were also astonished by Rahman’s simplicity and composure. The freedom that he gave for the singers and instrumentalists, and the innovations he brought about in composing and recording, were nothing short of a revolution. Moreover, singers were thrilled to be recording at about 3 am in the night. Harini talks about her experience – “I was just a school kid when I started singing, but he treated me with so much respect. He gave me so much freedom and room for improvisations. Recording for him at midnight is an unforgettable experience. I get a bit nervous when singing for other composers, but with Rahman sir that has never been the case. I really enjoyed my music” Rahman, who had captured the hearts of the youth, next joined hands with another man who also captured the attention of the youth – Director Shankar. The sequence reportedly features the protagonist - a scientist played by Rajinikanth, fighting with 300 robots, his look-alikes. The shooting has been on for nearly a fortnight and is expected to be completed within 10 days. Earlier, a song featuring the actor dancing in 100 different styles was shot at the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. Re: [arr] The man who did the first ever interview of ARR!
not be close to him?. He hasn't yet lost that closeness to me. 8 years later, I'd moved from the press and started working for TV and movies. I wanted to produce a special program for Sun TV for Tamil New Years day, in association with my friend Balakrishnan. That program was - Special interview with Isai Puyal A.R.Rahman. Rahman had started rocking both the Hindi and Tamil film industry by then, and was very busy! It took me one week to just meet him. Since I was producing the program, I personally met Rahman, and asked for an appointment for the interview. He said, Re-recording of Kandukondain will be over in a couple of days. After that, we can have the interview in my studio itself. But, on one condition... You should be the interviewer, lets not have any other anchor! I agreed. In the next few days, Rahman allotted five hours of his time for us, and also arranged for Biriyani for us, for lunch. The interview was aired on 14th Jan, 2004. In that interview, Rahman had listed down his favourite tamil songs, and had also explained why he liked these songs. - Kaatril Endhan Geetham composed by Ilayaraja (from the film Johnny) - Unnai onru ketpen by MSV - Thora guna by KV Mahadevan (Sankarabharanam) - Kaalangalil Aval Vasantham sung by PB Sreenivas This was the day Alaipayuthey had hit the screens. He'd got Mani Sir's consent to show clips of songs from the movie, during the interview. He didnt stop with just that. That night, he invited me home and thanked me for the good interview. Re: [arr] Oru Kanavin Isai (ARR's biography in Vikatan) - Week 9 - Scans and Translation
for this project. I could have earned that amount within few hours, composing for ad jingles. But, the prospect of working under Mani sir, attracted me. He is not a director who considers songs as fillers. I knew that he puts in lots of effort for each song in his films. I’ve noticed how he elevates a song which is 100%, to 400% with breath taking visuals. So, I accepted the offer” “I knew that there would be sky high expectations on a composer instrocued by Mani Sir, and hence, there was pressure on me! But, Mani was extremely friendly, and he brought out music from me. I’d have composed hundreds of tunes. We selected the best out of those, improvised on them…. He’s great!” ‘Roja’ album became a super hit through out the country. For Dileep who was rocking the ad film music world silently as an unknown composer, this was a pleasant shock. He was overwhelmed that not just fans, but even co-musicians and co-composers came forward and appreciated him. Though he had done so much of brilliant work for ad jingles and many of his tunes were popular, public wasn’t aware who the composer was. But all that changed, with Roja. If he had contemplated on whether to compose for just twenty five thousand rupees, he wouldn’t have got such a grand opening. When Rahman joined Mani’s camp, the whole world welcomed him with love! The super hit song from Roja – Chinna Chinna Aasai – can be considered as the first Reggae song in tamil. After the recording of this song, Dileep had recorded it on a cassette and played it to his mom. How did she feel then? Kareema Begum talks about it – “I didn’t know much about musica. I knew only one thing – he was rising higher and higher in the music industry, due to God’s grace. One day, he came up to me and said ‘Ma, I’m going to compose for a tamil film. It’s a Mani Ratnam movie. Listen to this song which I’ve composed.’ He then played *Chinna Chinna Aasai. * It was a happy song, but I don’t know why tears started welling up in my eyes. Rahman was concerned, and asked me what happened. I replied ‘Nothing…. The song is very good…. It moved me… It did something!” The song I liked was later loved by the whole world! I felt that he had started fulfilling his dad’s dreams, and this song was a start!” *Chinna Chinna Aasai* became the ‘family song’ in many households, and Rahman won the Rajat Kamal Award – the national award for best music – on debut! That was the beginning of a new era in Indian film music. [arr] A new venture, Asin and Salman Khan music by BOSS!
Amazing, isn’t it, the way Asin Thottumkal came to Bollywood and easily conquered the film industry? She’s the flavour of the season, everyone wants to sign her, and co-stars Aamir Khan and Salman Khan apparently cannot stop praising the southern beauty. But, it’s hard to believe, Asin actually had rejected films like Bachchana Ae Hasino, Delhi 6, Karthik Calling Karthik and the very recent De Dana Dan with Akshay Kumar before Ghajini made her! “It’s not as if I’ve come out of oblivion and suddenly made it big here,” said the actress who’s currently busy with London Dreams. Another film she’s thrilled about is the trilingual international project titled 19th Step that’s in English, Japanese and Tamil and in which she co-stars with the popular Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano. Asin plays an Indian princess who falls in love with a Japanese warrior come down to learn the ancient Dravidian martial art Kalaripayattu. The music for this film is scored by A R Rahman. And, Asin has to return to her home state Kerala to brush up her own Kalaripayattu skills for the film. BT spoke to her before she left… You’ve just stepped into Bollywood and are all set to take off internationally… http://www.bollywood91.com/salman-khan-very-supportive-asin-6060-091.html So far, I do not knew this movie, if any body knows that music by ARR and all details. [arr] 'Sultan The Warrior' delayed??
Has the release of Soundarya Rajinikanth’s Sultan the Warrior been posptoned to the end of the year. Last month, it was reported that the film would be releasing in July but in a recent interview with the Indian press, Soundarya said that only 70% of the film had been completed. There were also problems associated with A.R.Rahman’s available dates for the film’s re-recording. Some scenes contain actual footage filmed with Rajinikanth and converted to digital animation. This is the first time in the world that this technique was used in a full-length feature. Soundarya Rajinikanth has also roped in Hollywood-based the Image Matrix for the digital facial animation. This company worked on Brad Pitt’s Academy Award-winning The Curious case of Benjamin Button. Sultan the Warrior will be India’s most expensive animated film and will have Rajinikanth dub for the lead character. http://udhayam.blat.co.za/2009/05/12/sultan-the-warrior-delayed/ Regards, Uday Cricket on your mind? [arr] 'BOSS' will rock the city tonight!!!
Kozhikode, Sunday 03 May 2009: The wait is finally over. The maestro is here. A.R. Rahman, who won two Oscars a couple of months ago, will lead a group of leading playback singers in what promises to be an unforgettable show of live music and more at the Corporation Stadium here on Sunday. The show, “The Live In Concert — Jai Ho,” is Rahman’s first after his triumph at the Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood in February and kicks off his world tour. The film Slumdog Millionaire swept the awards and Rahman was nominated thrice; he won both the awards possible (for the best original score and the best original song) and underlined his stature as one of the finest composers in the world. Jai Ho had won the Oscar for the best song, beating Rahman’s own O Saya. The songs to be performed here are not known. But Jai Ho will receive the loudest of cheers. No other song in recent time has caught the people’s imagination as much as this song has, the world over. Rahman is one composer who has, during the last 17 years, scored scores of chart-topping songs of every kind, be it melodious, semi-classical or fast numbers. Whatever he chooses on Sunday night, will delight the ear. Would he play a Malayalam song? He very well could, for he had composed music for one Malayalam film, Yodha, and one of its songs, Padakali…, was pretty popular. Among the singers who will perform are Hariharan, Chithra, Sadhana Sargam, Rashid Ali, Javed Ali, Benny Dayal, Mohammed Aslam and Sayanora. The show is being organised by Global Kerala Initiative – Keraleeyam to raise funds for the rehabilitation of HIV-positive children. This is the first ever show by Rahman in Kerala. [arr] [Semi-ARR]Someone need an opportunity to succeed - Mr. Pookutty
After all you need just an opportunity to be successful, was the message Oscar winner Resul Pookutty conveyed on Wednesday to all aspiring artistes in film industry. Resul Pookutty, Oscar winner for best sound mixing of ‘SlumdogMillionaire’ said if someone is given the right opportunity, success in the film industry could follow on its own. “We have great potential. If right opportunity is being given to(right) people they will come up like the way me and Rahman (A.R Rahman) had come up. We knew Rahman is a great guy and he is someone who deserves as Oscar. But someone has to give an opportunity,” Pokutty said during the audio release function of a Malayalam film ‘Pajhassi Raja’. Pookutty, who hails from Kollam district of Kerala, shared the Sound Mixing Oscar with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke for his work in the Danny Boyle’s film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Together A.R Rahman and Resul Pookutty won three Oscars for India as the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ swept the annual Hollywood awards this year. ‘Pajhassi Raja’ is Pookutty’s first Malayalam film since winning the goldentrophy. [arr] [Semi-ARR] Prabhudeva's choreography in Endhiran
Once again Prabhu Deva is choreographing exclusive dancing movements for Superstar Rajinikanth in Endhiran. For Endhiran, Oscar fame A R Rahman had already composed 5 songs and all the songs will be recorded at a Mumbai studio soon. Three out of 5 songs have heavy dance movements and Prabhu Deva, Raju Sundaram and Raghava Lawrence are the choreographers who have been assigned 3 songs. According to Rajini, only these Three choreographers can understood his body movements and capabilities better than anybody else. Upon the request of Rajinikanth, Prabhu Deva has been assigned the introductory song for Rajini in Endhiran. The latest we hear is that Prabhu is in Hyderabad Ramoji Rao studio doing a very difficult song for Shankar’s Endhiran. The grapevine goes that Rajini is playing a dual role in the film as a scientist and a Robot. The buzz is that there is a song where two Rajinikanths will come together for a brief period. According to the sources, Prabhu Deva had designed two different dance movements for Rajinikanth in the same song. Nellore, March 20: Oscar winner and popular music composer A R Rahman allegedly squabbled with a media person at Venadu dargah in Tada mandal on Thursday while the latter was taking his photographs. Rahman is a regular visitor to the dargah and reached there at about 1 pm on Thursday from Chennai. When a vernacular reporter who belongs to the village tried to take photographs of Rahman, he reportedly instructed his followers to take away the camera from the reporter. There was a heated discussion between the scribe and supporters of Rahman for sometime and finally the camera was given back. Rahman immediately left the place after offering prayers. [arr] Editorial Reviews on SDM
A high quality video of SDM , awesome BGM by Boss. http://www.amazon.com/Slumdog-Millionaire-Novel-Vikas-Swarup/dp/1439136653/ref=pd_bxgy_m_text_b Editorial Reviews in amazon.com on SDM Kurt Loder, MTV.COM The propulsive score, by Bollywood soundtrack auteurA. R. Rahman, is hip-hop fusion of a very up-to-date kind Peter Travers, Rolling Stone The film is a visual wonder, propelled by A.R. Rahman's hip-hopping score and Chris Dickens' kinetic editing. Kenny Turan, Los Angeles Times Danny Boyle has upped the ante by hiring the great A.R. Rahman, the king of Bollywood music, to contribute one of his unmistakable propulsive scores. Product Description In composing the music for acclaimed director Danny Boyle's intoxicating new film Slumdog Millionaire, A.R. Rahman has conjured the sound of a city, fusing the frenetic scramble of daily life in Mumbai, India into beautiful fugues that ride upon the dust clouds kicked up by its everyday people. From the movie's first frames --- with children racing through alleyways, knocking over merchants and pottery, police kicking loose clay roof tiles, disrupted birds fluttering from gutters -- we hear the sound of their commotion made manifest in O... Saya. It's a rumbling hybrid of Bollywood and hip-hop, a brand new collaboration betweenRahman and M.I.A. It's the kind of cinematic moment where image and sound coexist. And that's only the first five minutes. Filmed in the streets and slums of Mumbai, India, Boyle needed just the right music to compliment the film's cinema verité urban realism. He turned to internationally renowned composer A.R. Rahman (a huge star in South Asia--selling more than 100 million albums worldwide and 200 million cassettes--Rahman is one of the world's top 25 all-time top selling recording artists.) The film's score is central to the propulsive modern grit that pervades the story, but is also a nod to classic Bollywood productions where the music is front and center. And loud. SaysRahman, We wanted it edgy, upfront. Danny wanted it loud. M.I.A.'s appreciation for Bollywood music led her to record much of last year's Kala inside A.R. Rahman's studio in India, although the two had never worked together until now. Referring to him in URB magazine as the Indian Timbaland, M.I.A. obviously jumped at the chance to work on O... Saya with the famed composer. Rahman says, She's a real powerhouse. Somebody played me her CD and I thought, `Who is this girl? She came here and knew all my work, had followed my work for ages. I said, `Cut the crap, this my idol crap. You have to teach me.' M.I.A. crops up again, later in the film, with the remix of her worldwide hit Paper Planes seemingly made for Slumdog, as the lyrics pronounce, Sometimes I feel like sitting on trains... while a light blue locomotive chugs and hurls its way through India, young boys perched up top in the sepia sunlight scoping out for a scrap of food. Other songs on the soundtrack include Gangsta Blues, featuring hip-hop artist BlaaZe, which flutters with the rhythms of a film projector, capturing a bit of the madness of crowds as they disperse in a thousand directions to escape the claustrophobia of back alleys. And nothing quite prepares you for the triumphant climax, the overarching ode to joy that is Jai Ho, closing out the film in a rousing sing-a-long that's had film audiences burst into spontaneous applause. As Rahman told Variety, The energy of the film takes you through a roller coaster, and that's one of the main inspirations for the whole music. A chicagoian review . The best movie I have seen in the year 2008 ... Rating : 5.0/ 5.0 Although I've seen some really good movies this year, I can say with confidence that SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is the one that I've enjoyed most. It has already generated perhaps the best critical reviews of any film released in 2008 and has won audience awards at notable film festivals. The film completely lives up to the hype that has surrounded it. In the first couple of minutes of the film we learn several things. First, Jamal, a Muslim who is a product of the slums, is a participant on the Indian version of WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? Second, he is suspected of cheating and is subjected to horrific torture at the hands of the police. Gradually, after having failed to elicit confessions of how he had cheated, Jamal related, while they all watch a video of his television appearance, how he knew the answers of each of the questions. The result is a series of flashbacks that essentially tell the story of Jamal's life and his relations with the two most important relationships in his life, that of his street smart but sometimes amoral brother Salim, and Latika. These scenes are set in some of the most horrific squalor that one can imagine. It may seem unrealistic that someone could come out of such wretched life experiences as relatively unscarred as Jamal
