[arr] AR Rahman: The Rolling Stone Interview

2008-06-07 Thread vinod rajaram
A collectible item for sure :)

http://www.desipundit.com/baradwajrangan/2008/06/07/ar-rahman-
the-rolling-stone-interview/

Baradwaj's comment:

I met ARR last August, when Rolling Stone India approached me
for the story, for their inaugural issue. But apparently, the bosses
at New York said the first few covers *had* to be of international
rockers, and this story kept getting pushed back and got really old.
So another writer met ARR recently and added some updated information,
and our combined effort was formatted into a QA and published in the
current issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

The reason for this explanation is that this is the story that
*I* wrote, last August, and not the one that appears in the magazine.
Hence the reference to Om Shanti Om in the future, etc.

Cheers,
Vinod Rajaram

[arr] Re: Is Jane tu released?????????????

2008-05-28 Thread Vinod Raju

Today I went in search of JTYJN CD in Bangalore CMH Road/Indiranagar
area, and was shocked to see non availability in most shops.
Forget all small shops, even PlanetM didnt have a single copy of the
CD. I went into Music World, walked around and was shocked to see no
trace of the CD anywhere. Even Ada was there all over, and even in
their sales charts, but JTYJN was nowhere to be seen. Finally asked
the sales girl for the CD, and she showed me 2 (just two) CDs of JTYJN
placed in a corner of the store, where nobody would notice. :-(

[arr] Telugu MDs Blatantly copying Rahman's tunes

2008-03-02 Thread vinod sagar
Hi,

Today I was listening to the song Unnattaa Lenatta from the movie Vaana. The
music Director is Kamalakar..

This song is a direct rip off of Rahman' Rang Hai from Meenaxi

Listen to the song at the below link (Cudnt find a quick link on other sites)

http://www.raaga.com/channels/telugu/movie/A0001235.html

its the 5th song on the list (unnatta Lennatta)

Also listen to the 2nd the song on the list Yeduta nilichi choodu.. its a
copy of hte old song Woh toh hai albela from SRK's Kabhi ha kabhi na..

Of late there have been numerous occassions where in the telugu MDs have been
copying rahman's songs from movies which are lesser known in AP...

But brave was the music director Ghantadi Krishna who shamelessy ripped off
Rahman's Ultimate Chaiyya Chaiyya in the movie Sainikudu listen to this
song at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJyB9Zrni6sfeature=related

there is one particular director Chakri who tries to behave like rahman.. by
sporting his hairstyle... and doesnt fall back either on copying rahman's
music... but still claims its his original !!

There are many songs which are copied from rahman's movies... but I cudnt make
note of the movie names.. cos the radio stations like Radio mirchi.. do not
mention the name of the movie in their broadcast..

This trend in the telugu industry has to be stopped!!

Regards
Vinod

[arr] Taran Adarsh reviews JA - 4 stars out of 5

2008-02-12 Thread Vinod Raju
Jodhaa Akbar (February 15, 2008)

By Taran Adarsh, February 13, 2008 - 11:24 IST

Let's get one thing straight: You haven't watched anything so
opulent, so magnificent like this in a long, long time on the Hindi
screen. It's not just body beautiful, but there's soul as well.

It requires courage, prowess, patience, aptitude, knowledge, passion
and of course, loads of currency to attempt a movie like JODHAA
AKBAR. But more than anything else, it requires your firm belief in
the subject, the belief to attempt a historical when historicals are
considered an absolute no-no in the industry, the belief to spend
almost Rs. 40 crores in a film that could go either ways.

Write your own movie review of Jodhaa Akbar
Only when you're convinced yourself can you convince millions of
moviegoers. And convinced you are after watching JODHAA AKBAR, a film
of epic proportions.

Now let's clear a few misconceptions pertaining to the film…

It's blasphemous to compare MUGHAL-E-AZAM and JODHAA AKBAR. While
MUGHAL-E-AZAM was primarily about the legendary romance between Salim
and Anarkali, a subject that has been attempted quite a few times on
the Hindi screen before, JODHAA AKBAR is about the relationship that
the young Akbar shared with Jodhaa.

A lot has been said and written about its length [3.20 hours]. Does
the viewer of today have the patience to watch a really lengthy film
in today's times? But once into JODHAA AKBAR, the sequence of events,
the drama, the romance, the war… every aspect keeps you mesmerized.
Oh yes, the length does pinch you at one crucial point [second hour,
which is relatively shorter], when a song breaks out. Otherwise, the
3 + hours are very well spent.

When you watch historicals like MUGHAL-E-AZAM and RAZIA SULTAN, the
usage of chaste Urdu is difficult to comprehend at times. Not here!
The language is simplified - Akbar speaks in Urdu, Jodhaa in Hindi -
and it's easy to decipher.
As a cinematic experience, it would be wrong to compare JODHAA AKBAR
to any of Ashutosh Gowariker's previous endeavors. Why, it would be
erroneous to compare the film with any film ever made before in this
genre. This one stands out and stands out the tallest.

To sum up, JODHAA AKBAR leaves you spellbound, enthralled, entranced
and awestruck. Ashutosh Gowariker makes the legendary characters come
alive on screen. Take a bow, Ashu!

Set in the sixteenth century, JODHAA AKBAR is a love story about a
marriage of alliance that gave birth to true love between a great
Mughal emperor, Akbar, and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa. Little did
Akbar [Hrithik Roshan] know that when he married Jodhaa [Aishwarya
Rai Bachchan], he would be embarking upon a new journey -- the
journey of true love.

The daughter of King Bharmal of Amer [Kulbhushan Kharbanda], Jodhaa
resented being reduced to a mere political pawn in this marriage of
alliance, and Akbar's biggest challenge now did not merely lie in
winning battles, but in winning the love of this defiant princess.

One of the prime reasons why JODHAA AKBAR works is because the
present-day viewer is unaware of the romance between Akbar and
Jodhaa. Sure, we all know of Akbar as a great emperor, but the love
story makes for a refreshing subject. And the execution of a number
of sequences makes JODHAA AKBAR extremely special.

Some instances:
* The war sequence at the very outset. You realize the scale and
magnitude of the film at the very beginning.
* Hrithik taming an out-of-control elephant. It's hair-raising.
* The two pre-conditions set by Jodhaa, before her marriage to Akbar.
Very interesting.
* The confrontation between Ila Arun and Ash at the kitchen, when Ash
decides to make the meal herself.
* The immediate sequence, when Ash is asked to taste the food herself
by Ila before she's about to serve the food to the Emperor and his
associates. Once done, Hrithik demanding that he be served the meal
from the same platter that Jodhaa had used.
* The intermission point, which sows the seeds of a misunderstanding
between Hrithik and Ash.
* Post-interval, Hrithik returning to Amer to get Ash back to Agra
and the welcome ceremony by his mother-in-law [Suhasini Mulay].
* The sword fight the very next morning, between Hrithik and Ash.
* The 'Azeem-o-Shaan Shahenshah' track, when the entire kingdom hails
Hrithik.
* The fight in the climax [reminds you of the fight between Brad Pitt
and Eric Bana in TROY].
Amazing moments indeed…

Ashutosh Gowariker knows that historicals have to be simplified
while narrating on celluloid so that the moviegoer is able to grasp
and comprehend the plotline and the sequence of events. Thankfully,
JODHAA AKBAR is not in the least difficult to decipher. Gowariker's
handling of the subject deserves the highest praise, for it's not
everyday that you come across a film like JODHAA AKBAR.

A.R. Rahman's music is not the type that you take to instantly, but
yes, it gels beautifully with the mood of

2008-01-10 Thread Vinod Raju

National Awards are given for films officially censored during a
particular calendar year (1 Jan to 31 Dec).
That being the eligibilty criteria, the year of censoring is taken as
the year of award, and not the year of release. (because there are
lots of films that win awards, but never get released in theatres,
due to a variety of reasons)

FOr the national awards, it might be a better idea to consider year
of award rather than release because technically the national award
can be given to a film that hasn't even released. The list below uses
year of release and it turns out to be incorrect because Minsara
Kanavu only released in 2007 and it won the award the same year.

So, I would put it as

 2003 - Kannathil Muthamittal
 2002 - Lagaan
 1997 - Minsara Kanavu
 1993 - Roja

Whatever happened to your unruly locks? When I went for Haj, I
shaved off my long hair. Fortunately or unfortunately, my wife liked
my new look.. she insisted that I should keep it. (Laughs) I had no
other alternative but to listen to my wife. Does your style of
composing music change when you do an international project like
Elizabeth: The Golden Age? The music for Elizabeth.. has been
co-composed by me. When Shekhar started the project, he wanted to
make
it very artistic and dark. But then, he decided to make the film
more
entertaining.. and the music more pulsating.

As a composer, I'd say music stems from one's emotions. So,
there's
absolutely no difference in my approach, whether I'm composing for
Jodhaa Akbar or Elizabeth. When you look back, how do you assess
your
music? Roja set the standard for me as a composer. And frankly, I
can't guage where to go after Elizabeth. Let's see.. at this very
point of time, I'm very excited about my next international album -
The Lord of The Rings which will be released on December 10. It has
many as 15 tracks. As much as 2 pounds would be spent a day on
the
orchestration. I believe you have started your own music company.
Yes.
It's called K M Musiq. I'm really kicked about it. All these years,
I
was being commissioned by others.. now I can commission others. But
it
seems you now insist on royalty foreverymusicscore..whichiswhyyou
couldn't compose for Om Shanti Om. In life, you can't have your cake
and eat it too. You have to take certain risks to reach your goal.
 Which have
been your most vital steps ahead? Undoubtedly Vande Mataram and ,
the score for the stage musical Bombay Dreams. What do you find
wrong
with the Indian film music industry? There are several problems. The
saddest thing is that no one takes acoustic instruments seriously.
Most musicians just prefer to work on keyboards. But I've stopped
 getting angry One should .

be true to one's own self.. because one candle can light a
million.
Do you still work like an owl all night and sleep by day? That's
rubbish! If that was true, I wouldn't be sitting here with you doing
an inteview in the afternoon. I work at night, occasionally ,
whenever
I'm dealing with a jet lag situation, not otherwise. How busy are
you
as a music director right now? I'm into a somewhat more relaxed pace
now. There was a time when I'd be doing six Tamil and two to three
Hindi films a year. How many Tamil films are you working on at this
point of time? (Laughs) Ha! That's a good question. I wish I knew
the
answer. I'm doing two Tamil films †Sultan, the animation film
being
made by Rajnikant's daughter Soundarya and Prabhu's Sakkarakkatti.
And
Hindi films? Well, let me see. Gajini, Ada, Jaane Tu Naa Jaane Naa,
Delhi 6, the Hindi dubbed version of the Rajnikant movie Sivaji,
Subhash Ghai's Main Hoon Yuvraj and Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa
Akbar. You
were against the idea of composing for dubbed films. So, how did
you make an exception for Sivaji? You're right there.I don't
encourage
the dubbing of my songs in other languages. Yes, so Sivaji is an
exception. It has beaty foot-tap , ping music which should connect
on
an all-India level. You are often accused of working for big
production banners at the cost of small films. Sorry, that isn't
true
at all. Otherwise, I wouldn't be doing Sakkarakkatti which is a
small
film. Are you composing the music for an animation film called
Cockroach being planned by Shekhar Kapur? Yes. I'm excited about
that.
Animation films allow your imagination to take flight. What do you
like about your music? That's a tricky question. If I say I like my
music, I'll be blowing my own trumpet. And if I say I don't like my
music, I'll sound disgruntled. Some film producers in the South have
accused you of recruiting Hindi singers to do the playback for your
 Tamil films at their
cost. I will gladly plead guilty of that. Because I don't believe
in parochialism. On the other hand, if I feel that a Tamil singer

Guess the subject of Shekhar Kapur's next!

Shekhar Kapur has come down to India promote his new film Elizabeth --
The Golden Age, starring Cate Blanchett [Images] and Clive Owen
[Images]. The film, which opened in October overseas, will release on
November 23 in India.

Meanwhile, Kapur has already gotten busy with his next project -- an
animated film on, hold your breath, cockroaches!

Titled A Suitable Cockroach, the film will have music composed by A R
Rahman.

Speaking about the film, Shekhar says that the idea came to him when
he wondered what the most hated creature in Asia was. It turned out
to be cockroaches.

If people can hate a creature that lovable, then he has a character
in hand. We had a character called Gabbar Singh which you hated but
he ultimately he became the film, Shekhar says.

The film is in its pre-production phase. Besides this, Shekhar's long-
planned Time Machine will also go on the floors though this time the
maverick director will don the producer's hat.

[arr] JA song Sufi Kalam features Hyder Ali

Did you interact with the big stars? How was the experience?

Yes, a song by A R Raman Sufi Kalam has been picturised on me. It
was shot in Karjat for 10 nights and during the course of the
shooting, I interacted with Hrithik Roshan. He is a very dignified,
cultured, respectable and down-to-earth person. I didn't interact with
Aishwarya because the two of us didn't have any shots together. Our
shoots were mainly at Karjat and Jaipur.

[arr] Prasoon Joshi on Ghajini experience

2007-11-12 Thread Vinod Raju

You've been collaborating with Rahman once again (after RDB) on
Ghajini Remake. How different is the experience?

Very different, creatively and to be precise, even personally.
Creatively it is a very different film than Rang De Basanti. It is
much pacier film and hence the requirements are very different.
Personally, because in Rang De Basanti alongside working
professionally we were developing a personal relationship, which
matured by the time the project, peaked. Now when I am working with
him again our understanding has newer dimensions which I think gets
reflected in the work we do. I always respected him but now there is a
deep emotional connect. It would be premature for me to talk about
specifics of songs at this juncture but it's entirely a new flavour.

Mumbai: Music maestro A R Rahman's Roja has
featured on Time magazine's 10 best soundtracks of all times.

Reacting to the news, Rahman said that future is unpredictable and
you never know what it has in store for you.

You never know what the world has in store for you. Suddenly you
find Roja being selected as one of 10 best soundtracks in the world
by Time magazine,” Rahman said.

The long wait to see one of our popular musicians go West finally
seems
to be on the verge of ending. Rahman, who scored big points for his
Bollywood explosion in Andrew Lloyd Webber's staged musical Bombay
Dreams, is all set to make his full-fledged musical in Toronto.

I like it when what I do here (India) is recognised abroad. The
musical stage version of Lord of the Rings happened in Toronto. I
scored music for specific characters in the play, he said.

Why such a delayed international impact?

Actually, Shekhar Kapur got me a couple of Hollywood films three-
four
years ago. But I wasn't ready then. Now with the Andrew Lloyd
Webber's Bombay Dreams behind me, I'm more confident.”

It's the first time that a musician from the Orient is being
called to
score in the West regardless of colour and creed. It's not about
whether you're an Indian or a foreigner. I was apprehensive
whether I
could swing it. But it has gone well!

Rahman sees Lord of the Rings as his natural progression into the
West. Bombay Dreams did flash A R Rahman's name. But it was seen as
Indian music.
“And I'm proud of that. But Lord of the Rings
is very exciting because it's got nothing to do with my being
Indian.
Composing for a stage play requires 10 time more energy than a film
 score,” he said.

2007-11-06 Thread Vinod Raju

Yes, ARR won it for 1992, and award was presented in 1993.

Leaving that trivia apart, what makes this award extra special is
the mighty competition for Roja that year - Rudaali (Bhupen
Hazarika), Sargam (Ravi Bombay), Thevar Magan (Ilayaraja).

And for a debutant 26 yr old to win that year speaks volumes for the
path breaking and revolutionizing music of Roja.

[arr] Re: 5 SONGS IN JODHA AKBAR

2007-11-05 Thread Vinod Raju

Here's that mid-day new item below (which Rajeev mentioned).

Jodhaa Akbar well under three hours
   By: Tushar Joshi
   November 5, 2007

Ashutosh Gowariker denies reports that he has chopped songs to
tighten the length of the period film, hurries to complete shooting

Most period films have a running time of three hours or more. So, it
wasn't surprising when everyone one heard that Ashutosh Gowariker's
much- anticipated period film Jodhaa Akbar had crossed the three-
hour mark. Naturally, there was concern about the length of the
film, and the director decided to shorten the film by chopping some
songs.

There are rumours that Gowariker had chopped two songs — a romantic
duet and a qawwali featuring Hrithik and Ash. Sources also added
that Ash apparently loved the qawwali and requested Gowariker to let
her use Rahman's composition in another film.

Ashutosh, however, rubbishes these speculations, I haven't chopped
any song from the film. It was always supposed to have five songs
and that is how it is. When further questioned about the length of
Jodhaa Akbar he adds, I am not having any problems with the length.
This film does not have a cricket match!

Time constraints

Ending speculation about the length of the film, the director
states, Jodhaa Akbar is well under three hours.
Keeping in mind the time constraint and the film's release date in
January, Ashutosh has been rushing through to complete filming. He
recently shot the last song for the movie at ND Studios, Karjat.

Ash has been shuttling between her Pink Panther shoot and Jodhaa
Akbar. In fact, she's quite excited after seeing the rushes and
can't wait to complete the final schedule.

Ashutosh Gowarikar 's Jodhaa Akbar , that stars the gorgeous
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and the dashing Hrithik Roshan in the title
roles, went under the knife, again, because the movie is just too
long.At present, the new version has two songs edited out, one of
which was a qawwali sung by A R Rahman , the music director for the
movie.

According to a source, every scene in the movie is important, and
Gowarikar did not want the flow to suffer. Therefore, the lavishly
shot songs had to go. It was a very good idea to have a qawwali, as
it was a traditional aspect in the lives of kings. It was difficult
for Ashutosh, but he also asked for Rahman's take on the decision,
and chopped the songs off only when Rahman agreed, the source adds.
The songs will be added in the DVD of the movie. Apparently, Ash
wanted to use it in one of her upcoming movies, but Gowarikar may
not agree.Gowarikar has a reputation for making long movies. The
Aamir Khan starrer Lagaan was almost four hours long, and the Shah
Rukh Khan starrer Swades was three and a half hours long.In more
recent times, there is a lot of criticism for the way a movie is
presented, and the director did not want any of that. According to
the source, the final cut, so far, is three and a half hours. The
movie is slated for a January 25 release, and the promos are already
on air. -- regards,VithurA.R.RAHMAN - THE GOD OF MUSIC

Rahman does it again with 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan'
Email Print Download PDF Comments (0)
By Aparna Nath. Tamil Nadu, India, 09:30 AM IST

'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan' is veteran composer A.R. Rahman's second
Tamil album of the year after 'Sivaji', which broke all records.
Though not as good as the first one, it disappeared from the market
within moments of its arrival! That's the Rahman magic.

The top five Tamil albums are:

1. 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan' - Music Director: A.R. Rahman. The
excitement of a Rahman album for a Vijay starrer was so much that all
the copies were picked up within hours of its arrival.

2. 'Thamizh MA' - Music Director: Yuvan Shankar Raja. Though it is an
excellent album by Yuvan, 'Paravaiya ennai' sung by maestro Ilayaraja
for his son is the pick.

3. 'Pollathavan' - Music Director: G.V. Prakash. The remix by Yogi B
of the 1970s song 'Engeyum eppothum' sung by S.P. Balasubramaniam
in 'Ninaithale Inikkum' is being lapped up by the new generation.

4. 'Bheema' - Music Director: Harris Jayaraj. There is no news of the
film but the album by Harris Jayaraj is still at the top.

5. 'Satham Podaathay' - Music Director: Yuvan Shankar Raja. Though
Yuvan's music for 'Vel' is not up to the mark, his 'Sathum Podathey'
is still a rage.

[arr] ATM for Diwali ARR is doing BGM - CONFIRMATION

2007-10-27 Thread Vinod Raju
ATM gets ready to rock for Diwali!

By Moviebuzz | Saturday, 27 October , 2007, 16:30

Good news! All issues regarding Vijay's Azhagiya Tamil Magan, has
been sorted out. Now Pyramid Saimira and 'Swargachitra' Appachan
says that there were no issues between them and things have been
blown out of proposition.
Producer 'Swargachitra' Appachan told Sify.com: ATM is 100 percent
releasing for Diwali-2007. A.R Rahman is completing the re-recording
and mixing. The film will be censored by October 31, and it will
release for Diwali.

Added Appachan: The music of the film is rocking the charts. In
five days since the audio release, it created a new record sales and
everybody loves the songs. Once the songs and trailer are shown on
the channels (after censor), it will do even better.

Appachan says that ATM is going to be Vijay's best film, as it is
racy and edge-of-the-seat. Says Appachan: We are going to release
350 to 400 prints of the film worldwide, and I'm sure it is going to
be a super hit.

[arr] Re: My ATM review

Nice write-up Thulasi. Agree with you on each and every word there.

Thanks,
Vinod

--- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Thulasi Ram [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote:

I had to dedicate two hours for penning this review. I appreciate
those who
take time to go through this. Thanks.

First things first: ARR is doing re-recording/BGM for ATM. It's
confirmed
from reliable sources. Don't keep on spreading rumors. Rather,
start
 spreading this information.

Understand the reality: You cannot have ATM songs in a movie like
Boys and
the vice versa is also not possible. ARR has come up with
some working
numbers to suit the image of a hero who has the potential to hit
deep. So,
free your mind and enjoy the songs given by the musical genius.

A bit of history- The lesson learnt: Till 2001, if an ARR song
doesn't catch
me instantly, I used to keep rambling like many in this group (!).
I
remember how bad I felt about mudhalvan songs initally. Later I
realized how
those songs grew in me. Similar case happened with Alaipayuthey. I
never
liked yaaro yaarodi, evano oruvan. But later, I realized how ARRs
song
create a swinging shift thereby making someone to rethink what
he/she has
thought about it initially. Okay there you go! That's ARR for you.
I made
something firm in me. i.e. Not to take any quick decisions for ARR
albums.
This strategy has worked great for me. For example, I never liked
tu bin and
lukka chuppi from RDB initially but I believed that ARR's song
will grow in
me. Later I felt that lukka chuppi is a gem of a song and tu bin
bataye a
 golden gift from ARR.

Bottom line: Accept ARRs songs as it comes and it will definitely
strike
gold in you simply because, music from ARR is not a result of ARRs
work but
ARRs blood. A man who has dedicated his life to music and a man
who has the
courage to experiment new sounds and genre of music. A simple
example: When
did rap become famous in regional movies? Only after ARR bought
rap stuff in
 alai payuthe.

Okay, lets dive into the subject of this mail.

 ATM Review:

After Laggan, all songs in an ARR album have caught me instantly
only in ATM
i.e. m hearing all songs without skipping from day 1.

My pick of the album: Merlyn Monroe (just a shade sweeter than all
the other
 magnificent songs in the album)

 Album rating: 10/10.

Bottomline: A versatile Rahman in show. ARR makes music sound easy
but it is
not easy. ATM has a bunch of complex compositions. Kudos to all
lyricists.

   *Ellapugazhum*

 Brilliance of ARR

ARR's voice and rendition; Great and mesmerizing. ARR adds life to
the song

The use of electric guitar - that's ARR for you

Magnificent use of chords that pump the adrenalin (sample 4:02 -
4:10)

The way the song ends.. Scintillating!

Reverberating chiming section throughout the song - ARRs mind in
play

Constant energy-sprinkling percussion which sounds great in 5.1

 *Merlyn Monroe*

 Brilliance of ARR

 Stylish Stylish Stylish

The way the song begins is too sexy. LOVE IT!

Notice that there are *NO* percussion in this song. Just the
chiming sounds
with bass guitar does the trick for the song. That's ARR for you
again

Amazing additional programming. High-tech sounds embellish the song

Casual rendition by male singer and female voice getting quite
squeaky..
This balance has worked out great in the song

Mesmerizing male and female alaaps. A

 complex song to execute.

 *Valayapatti*

 Brilliance of ARR

Check out different layers in the song. All unique but very tough
to compose

Raaga and corresponding alaap. Just magnificient! Come on, could
anyone
merge both folk and carnatic genre?? Only ARR can handle it so
professionally. Result: A magnificient song like this

Use of nathaswaram.. ARR makes even that instrument sound so
pleasant to
 hear.

The connection between both charanam and pallavi is too good. Folk
+
carnatic + percussion alaap (dheem thanaku dheem)

Use of bass guitar and making it play all along when the raaga
alaap is
 rendered. This is vintage ARR.

Use of Naresh and madhumitha is commendable

 *Kelamal*

 Brilliance of ARR

Only ARR can handle melodies like munbae vaa, kaatril(from GF) and
a song
like this.. All are melodies but fall info different percussion
genre. Just
 awesome.

Ketu rasitha padal ondrai bit is amazing and mesmerizing. An
alternate
version of it in the middle of the song is just scintillating

Singer selection has again worked out beautifully for ARR.

The song decorated by various versions of chiming sounds

Kokilam Kokilam bit is very much hummable.

A simple percussion handled so professionally to suit a melody
like this

 *Maduraiku*

 Brilliance of ARR

Again, the instrument melam sounds professional when ARR uses
it. This
aspect as always been very unique for ARR. He does something to
make the
instruments and singers voice to suit the mood of the song. That's

[arr] ATM - Rocking !!!

2007-10-26 Thread Vinod Raju

ATM is simply amazing.

5 days after the release, the songs are still getting better and
better with every listen.

Normally for every release, there would be some songs which would go
off my playlist after 2-3 days, but not with ATM.
All 6 songs are still in my playlist and they all look equally
strong.

A true-blue mass album, but with all the classy touches we associate
with ARR - thats ATM.

Hats off to ARR for this incrediblly upbeat album.

After hearing for 5 days, I can confidently say that this is ARR's
best Tamil commercial album after Alaipayuthey (Yes, even better
than Sivaji and Boys for me).

Hats off to ARR.

[arr] All 6 songs thoroughly enjoyable - Galatta.com's ATM review

2007-10-24 Thread Vinod Raju
Azhagiya Tamil Magan: Music Review
October 22, 2007

Vijay sports a ravishing look in Azhagiya Tamil
Magan. 'Ilayathalapathi' is pairing with two top sensations in
Kollywood, Namitha and Shriya in the movie. Music for Azhagiya... is
by 'Isai Puyal' A.R. Rahman. Rahman, in addition to making all the
six songs thoroughly enjoyable, has also worked at glorifying the
yesteryear hit, 'Ponmagal Vandaal'. Azhagiya Tamil Magan, a Deepavali
release has already begun its smooth ascent to the top.

'Ellapugazhum' is a thematic song. The charming melody, set at a
uniformly pleasant tempo, sung by A.R. Rahman with apt lyrics, slides
smoothly like honey to produce the desired effect.

The enthusiasm in 'Maduraikku Pogathadee' makes the first impression
a strong and good impression. Sung by Benny Dayal, Dharshana and
Archith, it sparkles with a freshness along with a novelty due to its
occasional western beats.

'Ponmagal Vandaal', a remix, rekindles the same fondness and
fascination one experienced while hearing the original. The effect is
greatly enhanced by the trendy instrumentation and rap. The song
comes in a combination of Ember Rap and Aslam's voices.

'Nee Marilyn Monroe' is sprightly in Benny Dayal and Ujjaiyini's
voices with a fine balance in rhythm.

'Valayapatti' has an interesting application of classical music
accompanied by a traditional set of instruments. Madhumitha, Naresh
Iyer and Ujjayinee take equal credits in the rendition.

'Kelamal Kaiyile' progresses at a pace that attracts listeners. Why?
Because of the understated simplicity and gracefulness in it.

ATM songs rock!

By Moviebuzz | Monday, 22 October , 2007, 16:15

At last Vijay's Azhagiya Tamizh Magan (ATM) audio was released
today (October 22), through all music shops in India. The Indian
audio rights holder Star Music expects 25000 CD's of the film to
sell in the next three days.
Initial reports suggest that Vaali written Ellapughazum sung by AR
Rahman himself has been pumping the adrenalin of Vijay's fans and is
said to be the introductory song of the star. The glamorous song on
screen is going to be Marlyn Monroe , which has full of English
words and is peppy. The remix song Ponmagal Vandhal is also a
scream!

On the whole, the reaction from Vijay fans is that the album rocks,
and Rahman-Vijay combination will be a chartbuster, especially after
the songs are telecast on the channels after the release of the
film.

According to a spokesperson of Star Music: ATM audio released in to
the market today morning has opened very well. All stores in Chennai
are reporting brisk sales.

ATM shooting complete, Post-production in progress

Looks like the word Sivaji has quite a connection with Vijay's next
film Azhagiya Tamizh Magan. First Shriya who became popular with the
recent blockbuster film 'Sivaji' was signed to play the heroine of
Azhagiya Tamizh Magan opposite Vijay.

Now, a superhit song from Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan's hit
film Sorgam is being re-tuned for Vijay's Azhagiya Tamizh Magan.
The song Ponmagal Vandhal Porul Kodi Thandhal has been re-tuned by
AR Rahman and was picturized on Vijay and Shriya in a grand set
erected in Chennai. The shooting for the film was wrapped up after
the completion of this song, and post production work (dubbing, re-
recording) will be started in the coming days and will go on in full
flow.

The audio of the film is scheduled for release sometime early in
October although the official confirmation date is not yet available.
The audio of the film has tremendous expectations with Vijay and AR
Rahman coming together after a long long time, and also coupled with
the mega success of AR Rahman's Sivaji which created records this
year.

Official Website : http://www.atmthefilm.com

Stay tuned to VFN (Vijay Fans Network) for the announcement of the
official audio release date

Well said.

Please please please close this thread. This is a humble request.

And for heaven's sake, lets stick to ARR and his projects.

There may be numerous good albums releasing daily all over universe,

If they all start posting about their favorite albums, then that
would take this group elsewhere.

Please lets be diligent enough to stick our discussions to ARR or

[arr] ARR mentioned in Asianet Idea Star Singer

2007-09-13 Thread Vinod Raju
Asianet's talent hunt program - Idea Star Singer, today had all the
judges praising ARR and recollecting their experiences. The judges
were M.G.Sreekumar, Sharath (Malayalam MD), Usha Uthup and actress
Padmapriya.

There is a Favorite musician's round, where the singer will have
to sing a song of his favorite MD.
One participant chose ARR. Usually when a contestant tells his fav
MD's name, the judges will ask why you like this MD? etc.
But when ARR's name was mentioned, MG.Sreekumar said you dont need
to say why ARR is your favorite. He is everyone's favorite.
Then went on to tell his own experience with ARR's music. That
everytime he get a new ARR album, he wouldnt like it first time.
Then he would listen in his car 2-3 times, and then the songs get
stuck into his head, and would never seem to go out in his lifetime.
He called ARR's music a mesmerizing experience.

Then came the turn of Sharath, who recollected an interesting story.
Way back in 1995, one day, popular Malayalam singer Venugopal called
him and told very excited that he has finally managed to sing a song
for ARR. When asked which song, he replied Kuchi Kuchi Rakkamma.
Few days later another noted singer Krishnachandran called and said
he has sung a song for ARR, Kuchi Kuchi Rakkamma. Again after a
few days, singer Srinivas called and said the same thing - that he
has sung for ARR finally and song is kuchi Kuchi Rakkamma. Again
after a few days, a new singer Chandrasekhar called and said that he
has sung for ARR, and SHrath asked him back is it Kuchi Kuchi
Rakkamma?!!. And finally when the song came out, it was in
Hariharan's voice. SHarath told this story to higlight ARR's quest
for perfection.

Usha Uthup talked about her experience recording for Daud.
Sukhwinder Singh was the lyricist and she said she had a wonderful
time recording with ARR and Sukhwinder.

It was a really great to see the respect for ARR and his music among
other musicians. :-)

Thanks,

[arr] Re: ARR copied Telugu pop song for Ottagathai Kattikko?

2007-09-11 Thread Vinod Raju

Karthik/Sarathy and others,

I, as most Keralites, have lived with this allegation of Ottagathai-
Kuyiline connection, ever since Gentleman hit the stores. It does
sound similar in the opening lines from ottagathai to Pottukkaari,
but I really cant call this a copy like the enormous songs listed in
Karthik's site are (same applies to the Telugu song connection too).

And if you still call this a copy, then that opens a Pandora's box,
and 1000s of songs by every MD in India also would have to find a
place in itwofs. (A certain Tamil MD who came as a lightning should
find all his songs listed in itwofs against another ARR song, if thats
the case) ;-)

Anyway, What goes into itwofs or not is completely Karthik's
discretion, and I dont think anybody has any right to say anything or
question Karthik on that.

Also, Telugu version of Gentleman released long time back
and Kontegadni Kattuko was a smash hit in AP as in other parts of
India too. I just cant understand how nobody would miss this copy
all these years. (especially since the Telugu album is said to be a
super hit album of early 90s - it sold 8 lakh cassettes as per a
website. Probably more than Gentleman sold in AP. So, no obscure song
this!)

This also reminds me of another old allegation that Varayo Thozhi /
Kehne ko Dadi resembling O mere Sona Re.
ARR himself had answered this in his Filmfare interview in Aug 99.
(pasting it below)

Q: Have you ever lifted a tune?
ARR: Not intentionally. But there was some strings of melody in a
song of Jeans which I was told sounded much like Mere sona re (Teesri
Manzil). I don't know how it happened,it was inadvertent...maybe
R.D.Burman's tune was lingering somewhere at the back of my mind.

And to end this rather large mail, please allow me to quote what
Karthik himself posted in Dec 05 in this very same group.

And ultimately, its only your belief that, as a person, Rahman is
honest, that is being questioned.

And that should explain the reaction and angst of Sarathy and the
1000s of other silent members of this group.

Hope we can end this topic and move on to discuss better things in
this group.
Any idea when ATM is releasing? Anybody? :-)

Thanks and regards,
Vinod

[arr] Re: ARR copied Telugu pop song for Ottagathai Kattikko?

2007-09-09 Thread Vinod Raju

This telugu song is copied ditto from 1954 Malayalam song Kuyiline
Thedi from film Neelakkuyil.

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/malayalam/s/movie_name.3623/
(song no.5)

Ottagathai copied from Kuyiline is a very popular allegation in
Kerala since Gentleman release days. But not many people are really
convinced about the 'copy' allegation, though the first line of
Ottagathai does have some similarity to Kuyiline.

@ I'm fully aware of how much buzz a post of Rahman's inspirations
may generate, not adding the hate mail that I may eventually end up
getting. But, here goes! Malgadi Shuba's 1991 Telugu pop
song, 'Eddem Ante Teddam Antav', from the album 'Chik pak chik bam',
with music by Raj Koti, seems to be the source of inspiration for
Rahman's superhit Gentleman song, 'Ottakatha Kattikko'. The first 2
lines' flow, that is, nothing more. And, considerably spruced up in
Rahman style, of course! I recall reading Rahman's apprenticeship as
an arranger for other composers like Ilayaraja, Ousepachan and Raj
Koti, so a connection cannot be ruled out as a coincidence. Plus,
I'm not getting into a guessing game which points to Rahman
composing this tune originally for Raj Koti since that's merely a
conjecture! Thanks to Amith Chandran and Bhagavathi Mohan for the
info! The full Telugu song is available in CoolToad, here.

 Late-lateef Rahman!
 By: Tushar Joshi

Sources claim the music director (and not Aishwarya Rai) is
delaying
 Jodhaa Akbar

Director Ashutosh Gowariker has set October 12 as the release date
for
 his magnum opus, Jodhaa Akbar.

However, the Hrithik Roshan- Aishwarya Rai starrer has been marred
by
talk of the project getting delayed.

First there was buzz that Hrithik's constant injuries were
hampering
 the schedule.

Then the ball shifted to Ash's court, with talk of her not being
able
to give time and dates to the project.

However, a source reveals that neither Hrithik nor Ash are worrying
Gowariker. In fact, it is music director AR Rahman who could derail
 the film's scheduled release.

 Short of time

Says a source working on the film, Rahman has overshot his
deadline
and is yet to complete the background score for Jodhaa Akbar. Even
though the action scenes are the highlight of the film, Rahman's
score
 is equally important.

He has worked closely with Ashutosh to re-create the sound of the
Mughal era and has done a lot of research for it.

While Gowariker isn't available for comment, the source says Jodhaa
Akbar could well be pushed to early next year if Rahman fails to
 finish his work in time.

A few weeks ago, there were reports that Ash was concentrating
more on
her Hollywood film Pink Panther 2 than Jodhaa Akbar. However, this
is
 nothing but speculation.

Both Ash and Hrithik have begun dubbing for the film since a few
weeks. They're not wasting any time and are as keen to meet the
deadline as anybody else, adds the source.

In terms of shooting, the only work remaining is a song sequence,
to
be shot on September 15.The song is on a huge scale and very
important to the climax. It will have 1,000 junior artists and a
budget of nearly Rs 30 lakh.

 Hi all,
Here's a short piece that I wrote recently about my experiences with the
legend's music. Was a bit hesitant to post it here as there is nothing new
in it...it all has probably been already said and discussed sometime
somewhere.
But still wish to share it with you all. Please have a look and let me
know what you think.

So here it goes...

*There is hardly anything that has not been said about the universal
nature of music; of its magical powers to cut across all barriers-
linguistic, cultural and geographic.*
*Words such as these sounded flowery and cliched to me till I got to
experience it all myself.*
*Till I was held captivated by a series of songs sung in a language
unknown to me and the melody in its own way conveyed its meaning.*
*Till the music and the rhythm of the songs in Indhira, Sangamam and
many more brought into my room a whiff of fragrance from some village so
far and yet so near.*
*And made the distant lands and people that I had never even seen, in a
unique way, my own.*
**
*When Rahman's music plays suddenly all the demarcations and differences
in the world seem to **disappear, making it one single entity.*
*Where the strains of sound from far and wide gell together in perfect
harmony to create a new **essence altogether.*
*Where one can feel the breeze in a sea shore in India sitting miles away
in a different country.*
**
*When he sings vellai pookal the space all around is filled with peace
and tranquility.*
*And when he says the words thanimai thanimayo kodumai kodumayo one need
not even know their meanings to feel the loneliness.*
**
**
*I have often wondered what is it that makes his music so special, but of
course some questions are best left unanswered.*
*But one thing that makes it different from most other music is that you
cannot just enjoy his music, have a good time and forget about it.*
*It transforms you forever.*
*It makes you proud of your country and at the same time connects you to
all other places in the world.*
*It makes you want to be a good Indian and a good global citizen.*
*It binds you to the soil and makes you want to reach out to the world.*
*All at once.*
**
*I remember him saying in one of the interviews that he believes the soul
of every human being is connected. Nothing reflects it better than his
own masterpieces.*
*Where the music often imparts a meaning to the song that goes far deeper
than its words.*
*A meaning that transcends language itself.*
**
**
*It is also interesting that if I am asked to choose my favourite AR
Rahman songs I will have to list **down around 70 to 75 percent of his
compositions!*
*Well, each sounds better than the rest.*
*And they all keep sounding better with every passing day.*
*Each time you listen to them you discover something new about them- like
hidden treasures that never cease to unfold.*
*And each time they sound just as fresh as ever!*
**
**
*There is so much more to be said but I will rather keep it short and let
his music say the rest.*
*All I wish to say is I am proud to belong to the same country and same
time as this musical wonder.*
**
*Proud to be a Rahmaniac!!*
.

Hope this works! Considering the number of fans in our group, we can
generate a large number of requests. I will do anything on my part
to contribute to this. Let's all rally behind this release and hope
that blissful music will soon be in our hands!

[arr] Subhash K Jha speaks out on Guru

2007-01-15 Thread vinod rajaram
Source: http://www.indiafm.com/features/2007/01/15/2092/index.html

The songs (composed with dreamy disdain by A.R Rahman) are an
exasperating nuisance. The long narration opens with Mallika Sherawat
cavorting frantically in Kabul….and moves quickly to Aishwarya Rai in
the village frolicking songfully in the rain.

Subhash K Jha speaks out on Guru:

Polyester gets a silken treatment in the hands of one of India's most
accomplished technicians and raconteurs. Thanks in no small measure
to Abhishek Bachchan's career-defining performance Guru stands tall
among the the techno-savvy films where huge stars have played gizmo-
gorged title roles with cold clinical detachment.

Guru has a lived-in warm feeling to it. From the Gujarati village to
Istanbul to the murky machinations of the business world in
Mumbai….Mani Rathnam's wannabe tycoon travels the gamut of land and
emotions with an astonishing spectrum of characters and situations to
support the ambitions of both the protagonist and his creator.

Don't be a dreamer, warns the ambitious Gurukant Desai.
We can't really accept the cynical reading of human aspirations…not
in a film that comes from one of the greatest visionaries of Indian
cinema.
Mani Ratnam has made it a habit to create new lyrical modes of
expressing cinematic exuberance without going over-board. In Guru he
again refrains from toppling over in excitement as he recreates the
life and times of an industrialist who would go to any lengths to
achieve his means.

In weaving in and out of what looks like a quasi-biopic, Mani also
finds space to create a superb love story between Guru and his
eminently supportive wife Sujata (Aishwarya Rai) who shares not only
her husband's dreams but also some of his avarice for materialism.

When he buys her a much-missed swing in the city-home to give her a
whiff of their village life Sujata pouts, I thought you'd get saris
and jewellery. Ironically when she discovers he married her for her
money, she pouts sulks and goes into a nostalgic love song that seems
to owe its playful effervescence to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum…Dil
De Chuke Sanam.

The songs (composed with dreamy disdain by A.R Rahman) are an
exasperating nuisance. The long narration opens with Mallika Sherawat
cavorting frantically in Kabul….and moves quickly to Aishwarya Rai in
the village frolicking songfully in the rain.

Visually correct and compelling the two music-video images bring
together the two contrasting faces of seduction and do not occupy any
thoughtful spatial harmony. Blissfully, a great deal of thought has
gone into creating a dramatic conflict between the newspaper baron
Manik Dasgupta(Mithun Chakraborty), his excessively upright deputy
Shyam(Madhavan) and the acutely corruptible stalwart Guru who
actually has the gall to compare himself to Bapuji(Mahatma Gandhi) in
his rousing rhetorical finale. Forty years ago another man broke the
law. We call him Bapu, argues Gurukant at the inquiry commission
(visualized on the lines of Hollywood's A Few Good Men and other
courtroom dramas) as Roshan Seth (compelling as the head of the
commission) watches open-mouted.

Honestly!
Integrity isn't obtainable in the selfconscious dialogues. Nor does
the crusader-journalist's attempt to bring down the business tycoon
ring completely true. It's the Ash-Abhishek axis that gives a sublime
spin to Ratnam's rhetorical raga of rags to riches.

Whether it was the Tamil Moun Ragam or the Hindi Bombay, marital
moments have always been Mani's forte. This time too he infuses the
sometimes-over-stylized visuals with wonderfully warm moments between
husband and wife as they climb the slippery rungs of his dreams and
ambitions.

While Abhishek goes with age-defying fluency from wild child to
paralyzed orator, Aishwarya stands next to him with passionate grace.
Together the couple creates an arching yin and yang. Watch
Aishwarya's subtle play of defiant longing in the sequence where she
jumps into the train taking away her newly-married husband. In the
sequences where she communicates her paralyzed husband's ideas to
sundry aggressive forces, her face registers every bit of the wife's
determined devotion.

Abhishek moves with agile fury through every phase of his character's
transition from dreamer to schemer. But you wish there was more of
Mithun. Madhavan's earnest performance is marred by an excessively
idealistic characterization. Crusading journalism is all very fine.
But marrying a girl with multiple-sclerosis (Vidya Balan, wasted)
seems more a sign of emblematic idealism than the real thing.

The visuals are unnecessarily manipulative. The kiss between Madhavan
and Vidya Balan in the pouring rain makes you wonder which came first…
the rain or the pain. Finally though, you're looking at a film which
leaves your misgivings far behind and races towards a summit where
manipulation is often confused with morality. When Mithun as the

[arr] When Sunidhi Chauhan interviewed Kunal Ganjawala

2006-12-19 Thread vinod rajaram
Source: http://specials.rediff.com/movies/2006/dec/19sld7.htm

Here is an excerpt from the interview related to ARR

Sunidhi: Right, and the music director has to know how to use it.
Okay, Kunal now tell us about your first song with A R Rahman.
Kunal: It was for the film Lakeer. I always wanted to sing with
Rahmansaab. My dream to sing with Panchamda (the late RD Burman)
will never be fulfilled.

The day I got a call from his (Rahman's) office, I couldn't believe
it. I thought someone was playing a joke. I jumped at the
opportunity.

When I went to the studio, that angelic man was sitting at the piano
and asked me if I wanted to work that day! He said if you are tired,
go to the hotel and we can record tomorrow. I was like, I have been
waiting for this for so long, and said no, I want to work today and
tomorrow!

Rahmansaab said just listen to the tune today and live with it, I
will finish off some other work. We will record it tomorrow. There
were no words, just the tune. So that's how I learned.

Now Sunidhi, you tell us about your experience with Rahmansaab.

Sundhi: My first song was Saiyya pakad baiya for Nayak. What an
experience! I went to the studio and waited. Around 3 am, Rahmansaab
asked me to sing.

I was singing the lines one by one. I thought I was rehearsing and
we would record the song later. After about 20 minutes he said,
Sunidhi, thank you, good night.

I was like, but I haven't even recorded the song!

He speaks very less, and that is kind of scary whether he liked the
song or not. But actually, he was quite happy with it.

I had gone with my father. I went out and told him that I didn't
know if he liked the song because I didn't even sing it. I must have
sung about eight lines. It was to be a duet. I thought he mustn't
have liked it, and since he didn't want to hurt me, he just said it
is okay. But when the song was released, and I heard it, it was
unbelievable.

Kunal: Isn't it? Thank you for happening to us Rahmansaab. The
moment he says thank you to us, our hearts sink, and we look at him
and say, you sure, sir?

Sunidhi: Yes, exactly!

in Maa Tujhe Salam

Chanda Nahi Suraj Nahi
 Duniya ki Daulat Nahi
Bas lootunga tere pyar ka khazana
Ek nazar jab teri hoti hai pyaar ki
Duniya tab to meri chamke damke maheke re
Tera chehra sooraj jaisa chaand si thand hai pyaar mein

It was cool to listen to two different tunes of the same lines by Rahman.

[arr] Singer Chinmayi on Aahista Aahista and En Uyir Thozhiye

2006-04-15 Thread vinod rajaram
Chinmayi
It would have been something to listen to Rahman sir weave his magic
in the song. I had the chance to listen to him play for the first
time, when he played in En Uyir thozhiye in Kangalal Kaidhu Sei. It
was as if the Raag Durga just flowed through to his keyboard. Fluid.
Total bliss for about... how long I dont remember.. but it was one of
the best Durga-s I have ever heard. More than singing for him, I wish
I could be the fly on the wall and hear him play. I have heard it a
couple of times, but as a rasika, I really long to hear more of
that. if only words could translate music..

Hi anuj,

First up ,Thanks for the initiative ! ... Keeping
fingers crossed that this time atleast we get to wear
the T-Shirt. I tried to update the XL sheet in the
files section but it is not happening.I dont think it
is getting saved. Should nt it be a database record
where everyone can add their specifications ? I tried
creating the database table but I guess there is no
more space for that too. Someone has to delete the

Dear Friends
The wait is finally over.
Now each and every one of us can wear our amazing
music maestro, A R
Rahman, proudly on our T-Shirts.
I know it has been discussed for a long time on the
forum but nothing
actually materialized. But this time it's not going to
be so.
After a long time I think we finally will be able to
get our T-Shirts
done.
I have spoken to 3 friends of mine, from IIM Lucknow,
who have
started a Design and Marketing Communications firm
under the name of
Tangerine Marketing Communications.
They are into Graphic Designing, Corporate
Communications, Branding,
Advertising and Web Designing among other things:
essentially
anything creative. Plus they provide end-to-end
solutions, as in not
just the designing and the conception but also the
execution of the
various projects.
Well the best part is that they also design and supply
T-Shirts and
they are very interested and also willing to produce
our much-awaited
T-Shirts for us.
In fact they have designed quite a few IIM Lucknow
T-Shirts/Sweat
Shirts and also arranged for the delivery of them
which have been
highly appreciated by the student community. Besides
these they have
also designed a plethora of brochures, posters,
fliers, banners,
etc. Also, they have suggested few other A R Rahman
memorabilia which
they are wiling to provide for us as per our demands
once the T-
Shirts are taken care of.
And I can assure you that this time this initiative
will definitely
get us the long awaited T-Shirts. The design is
underway and will be
put up very soon on the group website. Regarding the
delivery and
payment we are putting up a foolproof system in place
but the details
of which can be divulged only after getting the EOI's
(Expression of
Interest).
So guys and girls what are you waiting for? Rush to
fill up the EOI's
in the Excel Sheet posted on the File section of the
group website
by the name of WeARRahman_T-Shirts as soon as
possible as this
might be the best opportunity to wear the Asian
Mozart's T-shirts
proudly. Do mention your choice of size, colour and
the number of T-
Shirts desired. In case of multiple T-shirts, please
indicate the
number according to the size and colour.
Also keep in mind that the cost will be decided by the
number of T-
Shirts ordered. The more the number of people taking
T-Shirts, the
lesser will be the cost.
There will be 6 sizes available viz: XS/S/M/L/XL/XXL
The T-Shirts will be available in 3 basic colours -
Black, White
Grey. However, in case there is a lot of demand for
some other colour
even that can be made available.

Their URL is http://www.tangerinecommunications.com.
The site is
under construction and will be up soon.
They can be contacted at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Any personal
queries can be mailed at this address.
Well friends, I am looking forward to a great and
enthusiastic
response from all of you.

N.B.: I will be in Bangalore and Chennai in the
beginning of April
till June for my Summer Internship. I would like to
meet Gopal

[arr] Similar messages from RDB and Yuva

2006-02-05 Thread vinod sagar

guyzi think tthe message conveyed by rang de basanti is similar to that of Yuva..both had the message to the youth that they have to join the main stream of today's happenings instead of turning a blind eye to it and curse the system.Yuva had the message for the youth to join politics and clean it..Rang de Basanti has a similar message by asking the youth to join IPS, Administration, Politics etc..But the only difference is that RDB is more Funky..but yuva had the mark of Mani Ratnam all over..And the music is both Yuva and RDB is awesome. What do you say..byesagar

 Must Watch Movie

As U all know we guys in dubai get the chance to
 watch
 the movie before anybody else.
I also had a chance to watch the movie. In Simple
words, its just a brilliant work.
RDB basically a patriotic movie which has a
 contemparory touch to it.

It has comedy, emotions, love and everything which u
need for a feel good movie.
But i should say that the director had successeeded
 in
 conveying the message what he
 wanted to.

All the songs in the movie except the title song, is
played in the background. but all
the Rahman fans don't worry. Even its in the
background it gels with the mood of the movie.
Watch out for the Peppy remix of yali li ya aali
 li
when the title rolls. its awesome.
again u can hear to the instrumentals of Tu bin
bataye and Lukka chuppi in the back ground.
 its simply great.

 to tell about the stars.
Aamir like always he did an excellent job. but my
 pick
of the movies is sidharth. he was looking
awesome. Madhavan did justice to his special
appearance(s). Soha perfectly fit for her role.

 so bottom line is

Dont waste time Just book the ticket great movie,
its the movie of the year.

Watched Zinda yesterday and was pleasantly surprised
and then pissed off when I heard the beginning of Lord
An's Empire from WoHaE. Just the beginning vocal was
used towards the end of the movie. No credit given of
course.

The movie itself was pretty neat and follows the story
of OldBoy till, of course, the twist. There is no way
that anyone would have the balls in India to make a
film like OldBoy, yet. I preferred Musafir to Zinda,
but it still is pretty entertaining and good.

[arr] ARR latest interview from ARAB NEWS

2006-01-12 Thread Vinod Raju
http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1section=0article=76202d=13m=1y=2006pix=kingdom.jpgcategory=Kingdom

Leaving Celebrity Status Behind
Syed Faisal Ali, Arab News

A.R. Rahman

MINA, 12 January 2006 — From a non-believer to a
worshipper; from polytheist to monotheist; from Dileep
Kumar to Allah Rakha Rahman, the famous music wizard
has come a long way. This journey, he says, has
completely changed his outlook toward life.

Rahman is well-known in India. He revolutionized
Bollywood music, giving it a new direction. But in
Mina, the man was spiritually charged, relaxing in his
camp after Isha prayers, remarkably very far from the
rhythm of success.

He said that in India’s film world, people change
Muslim names to Hindu ones to get success but, “in my
case it was just the opposite from Dileep Kumar to
Allah Rakha Rahman — and I’m very proud of it.”

Rahman’s music is everywhere: in discotheques, in
malls, at wedding parties, on satellite channels, in
taxis. He is a celebrity in his own right. His face
adorns the cover of every album he cuts. Autograph
hunters hound him wherever he goes. A couple of
companies have tried to lure him into product
endorsements, but he refused, preferring to distance
himself from the glare and the sometimes
self-indulgent afterglow of fame.

Such was his attitude when Arab News met him yesterday
in Mina after a hunt of five hours that had started
just after Maghreb prayers.

Once a practitioner of idolatry, Rahman now talks
about Islam like a scholar. He winced as he spoke
about the ignorance of some Muslims and the divisions
among them on trivial issues.

Rahman, who has come to perform his second Haj with
his mother, utilized every bit of his stay in Mina,
Arafat and Madinah in prayer and remembrance of God to
“cleanse the inner self.”

He said Islam is a religion of peace, love,
coexistence, tolerance and modernity. But due to the
behavior of a few of us, it’s labeled as an intolerant
orthodoxy. He says that the image of Islam is being
tarnished by a small group of people and that Muslims
must come forward to present before the world the
correct picture of their divine faith.

“The enormity of their ignorance of the Islamic
history and its code of conduct is mind-boggling. We
should be united in fighting these elements for the
cause of Islam,” he said.

“Muslims should go to lengths to follow the basics,
which say ‘be kind to your neighbors, keep smiling
when you meet others, pray and do charity.’ We should
serve humanity. We should not show hostility toward
others, even to the followers of other faiths. This is
what Islam stands for. We should present before the
world a model through our behavior, nature and
presentation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
never used his sword to spread Islam; rather he spread
the religion through his virtues, behavior, tolerance
and righteousness. And this is what is needed to
change today’s distorted image of Islam.”

Talking about his Haj, Rahman said, “Allah made it
very easy for us. And up until now, I have enjoyed
every bit of my stay in the holy land and I pray to
Allah to accept my pilgrimage.”

For him, the stoning ritual is a physical exercise
that symbolizes internal struggle: “It means the
defeat of temptation and killing the devil inside
ourselves.”

“I would like to tell you that this year I got the
most precious gift on my birthday, Jan. 6. Allah gave
me the opportunity to confine myself inside the
Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah and pray all through the
day. Nothing could match this experience and that too
on my birthday; I am extremely delighted and thankful
to Allah,” he said.

Rahman said that prayers release his tension and give
him a sense of containment. He performs prayers
despite heavy work pressure. “I am an artist, but
despite tremendous work pressure I never skip
prayers,” he said. “I am very punctual in offering the
day’s all five prayers on time. This releases me from
tension and gives me hope and confidence that the Lord
is with me, that this is not the only world. It
reminds me of the Day of Judgment.”

It was in the year 1989 that he and his family
embraced Islam.

Talking about his reversion, Rahman said, “The whole
process started with a sequence of dream. It was in
1988. I was in Malaysia and had a dream of an old man
who was asking me to embrace Islam. For the first
time, I did not take it seriously, but then I saw the
same dream several times and I discussed it with my
mother. She encouraged me to go ahead and to respond
to the call of the Almighty. Also, in 1988, one of my
sisters fell seriously ill and in spite of the
family’s effort to cure her, her health deteriorated
by the day. Then under the guidance of one Muslim
religious leader we prayed to Allah, which did wonder
for my sister and she made a miraculous comeback to
life. Thus, began my journey from Dileep Kumar to A.R.
Rahman.”

He said the decision to embrace Islam was a mutual one
with his mother. Not one to normally discuss this
