hey,

The batch of cds are usually bought by small retailers who inturn sell the

The data from the small shops point of sale counts. I did ask the same question
to 3 such shops and they said the sales have picked up while it did vanish from
shelves for the first 2 days and dip.

Overall it stands as a hot cd

Re: [arr] VTV: My thoughts

2010-01-31 Thread Roshan
good review :)

i still haven't heard the rest of the songs except aromale.. gotta buy the
album

On Sat, Jan 30, 2010 at 10:39 PM, Jahanzeb jahanzebti...@yahoo.com wrote:

I held myself back from writing any review before I give it sometime and
result is that I have a much different opinion on it now. VTV is also of
particular significance to me because it's the first brand new non-Hindi ARR
album for me (I started to listen ARR's non-Hindi albums last year and got
all his collection at once). My initial impression was that it is below
expectations especially given the huge hype however it didn't take long
before I realized how innovative and classy album it is. Given it's
experimental nature, songs are structured in unconventional way and ARR
preferred to use simple and less heavily-layered music here. May be this is
why album as a whole sounds low on melody, at least initially. Songs are not
very hummable, at least in first hearings, but then grow on quickly.

Omana Penne: It has quickly become my most favorite of the album. Initially
it sounded a little lacking in terms of instruments and thinly structured
layers however it grew on me like magic. I absolutely loved Benny's
rendition. I would say it is his best compared to his early works with ARR.
What an awesome intro this song have got, and I think Benny deserves full
credit for it. The beats and the chorus are awesome. Though didn't like the
female vocals initially, at least the way they come in, it sounds to me like
some song has been played in background with low quality sound. Loved that
shahnai too, kind of Continuum fingerboard ending of Rehna Tu. 8/10

Anbil Avan: Very catchy tune and the only instantly-likable (or may be I
should say mass-appealing) song from the album, but at the same time the
only sub-standard song (as per ARR's standards) of the album. I completely
agree with Chord and others that Chinmayi ROCKS big time. It's hard to
believe how effortlessly she sounds different in different songs. And also
that it is the same Chinmayi who sung Tere Bina and I Miss You Da. Though
could not get why it sounds noisy when it starts, as if there is some
problem with the sound. I see this song becoming huge hit among masses. 7/10

Vinnathaandi Varuvaayaa: To me this is the weakest of the lot. Initially I
didn't even understand the rhythm, it was just like a free flowing song like
someone else has also mentioned here. ARR has given much better songs like
this with minimum instruments, e.g. Dheemi Dheemi from Earth 1947. Anyway I
liked Karthik's singing and has started to like this song now. 5.5/10

Hosanna: I have to admit I under-estimated it from the promos. I think that
was mainly because of Blaaze's rap, who I think is becoming repetitive (at
least compared to NaNa where he did an awesome job). Now I am completely in
love with this song. And I must say it belongs to Vijay Prakash who
impresses once again after his superb Fiqraana rendition. In fact sometimes
I think with such superb job by Vijay why did they even need Blaaze, it
would have been equally good without him, or may be better. The song is very
unconventionally structured (three stanzas/antras and no proper
opening/mukhda ??) but maybe that's its high point. In number of places it
just sounds sort of some instrumental because of limited vocals, especially
those long female background vocals/choir (Suzanne) could have been cut
 short. 7.5/10

Kannukkul Kannai: Didn't like it much initially but now is it growing on
me. Naresh's singing is very effective for these kind of songs and he proves
this again. It sounds like a guitar only song, there is very minimum use of
other instruments here. And again no rich, fancy interludes. But anyway
 quite a catchy song. 6/10

Mannipaaya: The song starts so beautifully however somehow later couldn't
maintain it. Shreya is awesome with honey sweet voice and perfect rendition,
her vocals are the absolute high point of the song. ARR sounded to me a
little lacking don't know why, (I hope it goes down well with ), his
voice sounded bit husky, compared to Rehna Tu there was some difference,
something lacking which I am not able to explain. From the initial hype I
expected it to be my number 1 or 2 most favorite on my list however it only
comes at number 4 or 5 (after Omana Panne, Aaromale, Hosanna and may be
 Anbil Avan). 6.5/10

Aaromale: Such beautiful guitar though I have to admit that I was kind of
taken aback by Alphons's voice when it appears the first time. However later
I realized how wonderfully it suited to the song. Though like many others I
also felt that there is too much Aaromale Aaromale going on that it sounds
irritating at some point, at least in first few hearings. Loved the rock
feel of it. I don't think ARR has compose something like this before, I
absolutely want more of this sort of gems in future. Really loved the way it
breaks into the chorus the first time

I think VTV is brilliant. A different album in tamil after a long time. Most
people who are disappointed by the album probably expected a conventional
score. But, thalaivar is different. Usually some of Rahman's songs are
appreciated only after you listen a few times. But, I got hooked to VTV songs
immediately.

Re: [arr] VTV review.

2010-01-24 Thread kishore parayath
Such a POSH review... The BEST so far.. Ofcourse, it requires a lot of
patience, to read lengthy old-fashioned descriptions of Baradwaj Rangan..
But, it certainly takes you to a level of depth, be it any subject!

His comparisons, with the score of Morricone, etc so classy.. And certainly,
he mentions about the unpredictable new format that Rahman has created in
each song!

The article was certainly a treat to read! He is very well aware of who
Rahman is, and who his predecessors like MSV and IR were! So he doesnt make
RIDICULOUS comparisons, as foolish fans of those veterans make today!

Rahman certainly took a different path.. If legends like MSV and IR
travelled east.. Rahman travelled far west ( i.e., in a TOTALLY different
direction)

While, the erstwile chartbusters of MSV and IR became cherishable melodies..
each song of Rahman, becomes a NEW CONCEPT.. which subsequently becomes
'textbooks' for other composers.

Routine means you have heard similar sounds before? Which song you

A company like Amazon should have been able to provide this info much

Hi,

I was at the launch yesterday, as I was lucky enough to get an invite!
loads of unforgettable memories.. jotting down a few here:

- The unplugged versions of all songs were performed, just like the London
Promo They all were in the same suits too :D
- Omana penne
was in a totally different flavour, devoid of all the malayalam
connection.. . Blaaze had come up with a RAP too for this song
- It was such a treat to listen to Aaromaley Live! The other songs were
great too in the unplugged format.. but Aaromaley was special!
-
Gautam said it was Rahman who told Gautam that they should have one
more song, in addition to the 6 they had planned... and that is
Aaromaley... Rahman called up Gautam and told him, why dont we add one
more song? lets do a Malayalam song with blues touch
- Gautam mentioned Rahman suggested that they should that Mannippaya
should be sung by a female, cos gos normally dont apologise, so they
should change that! :P
-
Rahman and Kamal came on stage for a few mins, each of them spoke just
a few lines ARR - s humble as usual! He even said he isn't sure
if this album will match up to the standards set by Gautam-Harris
combo! he said it is a very quirky album and it can succeed only with
our support!
- Clips from the London launch were shown...They were great! :D
- 3 songs (Omana, Hosanna and Kannukkul) videos were played The songs have
been picturised really well. amazing camera work!
-
Met all the singers, met Alphonse too. There's no relation between the way he
has sung and the way he speaks... He is so very soft spoken, so very down to
earth! His aaromalay yesterday was amaaazing!

Artistic unconventionality may haave a price in terms of difficult common
accessability and initial resistance, but the upside is to value a long term
tradition of artistic liberty, heavily influenced and in some ways born out
of the Rennaissance period of world history.

What is artistic liberty? It's a type of freedom of expression.. of
thoughts, ideas, concepts, emotions unbounded by dogma, static rules, and
artificial boundaries, both within and without the individual expressing such
a freedom. It's a gift of nature, an affirmation of our humanity, and a
vehicle of creative expression that serves to communicate the deepest part of
ourselves and to help interpret our world aesthetically through an unknown,
undiscovered canvas of free ideas and concepts that are out there, and yet
within us at the same time.

Music as an artform is a medium of this expression among a spectral array of
various nonverbal communication forms, yet, to me, embodies a holistic
attribute more than other art forms that helpes to synthesize the senses and
the spirit. The power of focused sound, positively intended vibrations on
the molecular level indeed serve many positive purposes through its
recreative invention and various sonic avatars. It it we, the receivers,
interpreters, and listeners, through the magic of our neural makeup, who are
divinely gifted and bestowed the ability to create, invent, and magnify from
this aural sea of sound consciousness that embodies our very existence from
 conception to death.

When I listen to a contextually unconventional music album like VTV, the
concept of artistic liberty superimposed on the idea of musical freedom
immediately strikes me as a divine gift, that only very few in this world are
able to communicate so movingly and convincingly. No doubt, Rahman's music
has always been about unbounded freedom from the confines of sound limitation
and conventional rules, aided by a myriad of technological tools. It is to
the fortune of Rahman that he arrived at musical time when his own creative
intentions met technological upswelling at a very important crossroad in a
momentous part of musical history. Yes, it was written, and yes, it was
 intended.

I celebrate VTV not only because it pleases me aesthetically and challenges
my intellect, stimulating both left and right hemispheres into a holistic
phenomenon, but also for what it represents; another fulcrum of artistic
liberty and musical freedom from a man, one of the greatest musicians ever,
whose creative intentions are only pure and loving.

The larger picture, the unbridled privilge of being a witness and recepient
to this special expression calls out loud and clear to me and I am
 listening... listening. ...listening .

I don't have an issue with Karthik downloading songs from the internet to write
the review. What I have a problem with is his writing the review even before
the actual release of the CD. It's unfair to the composer. It's unethical.
There are certain people who can be considered opinion leaders and their
opinion influences the purchasing decision of a large number of people, who are
usually fence sitters. Karthik is a opinion leader, whether he likes it or not
or whether he deserves it or not. By writing the review, people, who otherwise
would have bought the CD and maybe decided on their own if the music was good
or bad, could now ignore the product. Whether we like it or not, sales play a
big role in a song becoming a hit or not.
Also, by writing the review he has made more people aware that the songs are
available for illegal download. Not all would have the high moral values of
Karthik and buy the CD later on.

indivdualistic/idiosyncratic, but some general observations can apply:

 1) New musical ideas and directions are often met with resistance due to
auditory inertia and the brain having to accommodate rather than assimilate.

 2) Stronger than usual emotional reactions in both negative and positive
directions may be seen with higher divergence of opinion.

 3) Previous expectations play a bigger role in influencing judgment, esp.
 during initial exposure stages.

 4) Radical paradigm shifts come as a shock and evoke extreme reactions

 5) Such extreme reactions usually temper with time as the concepts become
more mainstream and accepted along with exposure therapy.

VTV, a path breaking album with new musical ideas, concepts, directions,
sounds, may be applicable to the above observations, hence the wide variety
of reactions I am seeing all over the internet in response to this music,
which is not at all unusual for a new ARR album.

One of the much-awaited music releases, Gautham Menon's *Vinnathaandi
Varuvaayaa (VTV)* is all set to rock the charts. The album has seven songs
composed by the Mozart of Madras, A.R. Rahman. Let's take a look at the
 album:

'Omanna Penne' is a beautiful blend of Western rhythms and the Carnatic
ragas. The stylistic Nadaswaram adds a cleansing feel to the song. The
ending Nadaswaram seems to be an extension of 'Rehna Tu' from *Delhi 6*.
The music has been wonderfully rendered by Benny Dayal and Kalyani Menon.

'Anbil Avan' by Devan Ekambaram and Chinmayi has some joyful melody feel.
The music has some very nice and quick chord progressions. 'Vinnathaandi
Varuvaayaa' is brilliant. The title song has some beautiful strings, amazing
vocals, chords, heartfelt emotions, delicate and subtle music. Great singing
 by Karthik.

'Hosana' -- the much-awaited song -- no one can do it better than Rahman.
The Scottish flavoured flute and the subtle mandolin rhythms makes the music
so crisp and clear. This is definitely a masterpiece and one of the best
songs from Rahman in recent times. Vijay Prakash, Suzzanne and Blaze have
rendered their voices for the song.

'Kannukkul Kannai' has a Western classical feel but seems to be a little
disappointing. 'Mannipaaya' is a romantic duet by Shreyal Ghosal and A.R.
Rahman. Get ready to experience some breathtaking melody, sophisticated
arrangements, subtle symphonic artistry. One of the album's highlights for
sure, and we hope it will be a visual treat too.

'Aaromale' is a brilliant masterpiece from the music genius. Sensual,
stylistic, clean acoustic guitar with mindblowing vocals by Alphonse. The
vocal fade at the ending is simply brilliant. Watch out for this at the top
 of the charts.

On the whole, *VTV* is well beyond expectations; it would definitely be a
distinct highlight in ARR's career. The album is one of the finest musical
packages with originality, sophistication, class and quality.

Re: [arr] vtv after so many hearings.

2010-01-12 Thread Madhavan Rajan
Forget common people dude...How do you feel? Don't you feel something new?
Aaromale? one of it's kind in Tamil music?

Instead of trying to compose a safe, tried and tested tune, AR goes an extra
mile to compose something new in every album! Some like me and many here
like it...Some may take some time to like it...Some may never like it...So
be it...It all depends on how open are the audience to new kind of music or
how comfortable they are with just one kind of music...

Once people were listening to great G.Ramanathan, C.Ramachandra etc during
the 50's where songs were purely carnatic and devotional...then there were
people listening to great composers like S.V.Venkataraman, Vishwanathan and
Ramamurthy where a bit of traditional folk were introduced by them...Then
came Isaignani Ilayaraja who ruled the charts... Ilayaraja, during 90's,
fused folk and western in his own style to suit the then youth probably when
synthesizers started becoming popular...Then came our AR who brought in a
new trend in composing altogether...He took so much efforts to raise the
standards of composing and took it to an international level where people
all over the world appreciated Indian music...When people started listening
and following MJ, Pink Floyd, Rick Astley, Queen, Abba, etc, AR brought in
exactly what was not explored in Indian cinema...His music now is being
listened by a wide group of people all over the world...Now that he has
tried successfully in almost all genres, he moved on to artistic
soundscaping...He introduced new sounds, experimented with self created
loops, introduced new instruments, and experimented with vocals just to make
his work more exciting...If you are thinking that still common people want
a Kadhalan or Thiruda Thiruda, then I'm sorry dude...Nobody here want AR to
be a run of the mill composer by rehashing the same style in every
album...He is always years ahead and the future generation will also
appreciate his music...

These are just my opinions and I'm not forcing my opinions on you... And
yes, VTV rocks!!! It will stand on it's own for years...

Artistic unconventionality may haave a price in terms of difficult common
accessability and initial resistance, but the upside is to value a long term
tradition of artistic liberty, heavily influenced and in some ways born out of
the Rennaissance period of world history.

What is artistic liberty? It's a type of freedom of expression.. of thoughts,
ideas, concepts, emotions unbounded by dogma, static rules, and artificial
boundaries, both within and without the individual expressing such a freedom.
It's a gift of nature, an affirmation of our humanity, and a vehicle of
creative expression that serves to communicate the deepest part of ourselves
and to help interpret our world aesthetically through an unknown, undiscovered
canvas of free ideas and concepts that are out there, and yet within us at
the same time.

Music as an artform is a medium of this expression among a spectral array of
various nonverbal communication forms, yet, to me, embodies a holistic
attribute more than other art forms that helpes to synthesize the senses and
the spirit. The power of focused sound, positively intended vibrations on the
molecular level indeed serve many positive purposes through its recreative
invention and various sonic avatars. It it we, the receivers, interpreters, and
listeners, through the magic of our neural makeup, who are divinely gifted and
bestowed the ability to create, invent, and magnify from this aural sea of
sound consciousness that embodies our very existence from conception to death.

When I listen to a contextually unconventional music album like VTV, the
concept of artistic liberty superimposed on the idea of musical freedom
immediately strikes me as a divine gift, that only very few in this world are
able to communicate so movingly and convincingly. No doubt, Rahman's music has
always been about unbounded freedom from the confines of sound limitation and
conventional rules, aided by a myriad of technological tools. It is to the
fortune of Rahman that he arrived at musical time when his own creative
intentions met technological upswelling at a very important crossroad in a
momentous part of musical history. Yes, it was written, and yes, it was
intended.

I celebrate VTV not only because it pleases me aesthetically and challenges my
intellect, stimulating both left and right hemispheres into a holistic
phenomenon, but also for what it represents; another fulcrum of artistic
liberty and musical freedom from a man, one of the greatest musicians ever,
whose creative intentions are only pure and loving.

The larger picture, the unbridled privilge of being a witness and recepient to
this special expression calls out loud and clear to me and I am listening...
listening. ...listening .

 Hi,

I was at the launch yesterday, as I was lucky enough to get an invite!
loads of unforgettable memories.. jotting down a few here:

 - The unplugged versions of all songs were performed, just like the London
Promo... They all were in the same suits too :D
 - Omana penne was in a totally different flavour, devoid of all the
malayalam connection... Blaaze had come up with a RAP too for this song
 - It was such a treat to listen to Aaromaley Live! The other songs were
great too in the unplugged format.. but Aaromaley was special!
 - Gautam said it was Rahman who told Gautam that they should have one more
song, in addition to the 6 they had planned... and that is Aaromaley...
Rahman called up Gautam and told him, why dont we add one more song? lets do
a Malayalam song with blues touch
 - Gautam mentioned Rahman suggested that they should that Mannippaya should
be sung by a female, cos gos normally dont apologise, so they should change
 that! :P
 - Rahman and Kamal came on stage for a few mins, each of them spoke just a
few lines ARR - s humble as usual! He even said he isn't sure if
this album will match up to the standards set by Gautam-Harris combo! he
said it is a very quirky album and it can succeed only with our support!
 - Clips from the London launch were shown...They were great! :D
 - 3 songs (Omana, Hosanna and Kannukkul) videos were played The songs
have been picturised really well. amazing camera work!
 - Met all the singers, met Alphonse too. There's no relation between the
way he has sung and the way he speaks... He is so very soft spoken, so very
down to earth! His aaromalay yesterday was amaaazing!

Too much pain, not worth it. Better buy CDs :)

  VTV CREATS HISTORY
Vinnai Thandi Varuvaaya audio creates history

Maestro AR Rahman and Gautham Vasudeva Menon have created audio history as
there has been a terrific advance booking for their Vinnai Thandi Varuvaaya
  (VTV) audio!

A spokesperson of Sony Music said: For the first time ever even before the
release of the album, Amazon.com has overwhelming pre-release response for
CD orders of VTV audio. The CD has already been marked as number 1 in the
category of 'Music World Music FarEast Asia.' It clearly means before
the release it is already the top seller in Far East and Asia category. No
other product has got such a response on Amazon.

VTV is ARR's first (Tamil) composition after the success of Oscar Winning
Slumdog Millionaire. The album features singers Karthik, Naresh Iyer, Benny
Dayal, , Blaaze, Devan Ekambaram,Vijayprakash, Shreya Ghoshal, Chinmayi,
Suzaane, Alphonse, Kalyani Menon and Rahman himself. The album's lyrics have
been penned by Thamarai. The album has six songs in Tamil, one in Malayalam
and a theme track by the academy award winner himself.

Meanwhile the first ever rocking song from VTV, Hosanna… sung by Blaaze,
Vijayaprakash and Suzaane will debut on all FM stations in Tamil Nadu today
(January 9). On Tuesday (January 12), AR Rahman, Gautham Vasudeva Menon and
Sony Music will officially launch the soundtrack.

(The Theme track - instrumental - addition is news to me!)

There is no instrumental theme track on the CD. It did come up as a last
minute inclusion but was kept out so not to delay the release any further.
May or may not make an appearance in a future batch, no certainty on that.

Please do not report/pass on the links to any one outside and instead report
these to some one like Gops privately so that we can have him take it with
Sony.

i just did the same and hoping to see couple of sources taken down.

Additionally, i think we are one of the very powerful and active community
around and am very sure if we follow this practice, it will be of great help
for the people in the music industry especially the musicians.

Personally i'd prefer to pin this piracy down before we land on to Endhiran and
Raavan - if not immediately !

Thanks to all the fans
