Ok folks, we are 1 week from voting beginning on the ARSList awards. For
nomination, thus far we have had 23 participants nominating 9 MVP's and 6
BMC Above and Beyond. I personally consider this awesome to have so many
people to choose from for a nomination perspective, but am disappointed in
the number of participants.

Please remember that your effort as a participant is in recognition of
another person's effort to help you.

All nominations must go to arslistawa...@wwrug.com, and should include a
sentence or two describing why they deserve the nomination.

This will likely be my last email on this subject, with the next one
listing your nominees for voting. Thank you to those of you that have
already participated.

Daniel has chosen to do things a bit differently this year. He has decided to
let the incumbent MVP, that's me this year, run the Awards.

This is the 18th Annual ARSlist Awards, Call For Nominations.

These awards were created by Daniel in 1995 to recognize the efforts of
posters asking questions, those providing answers, and sometimes even of those
providing what is titled as Friday Humor, and even sometimes gets a laugh.

It was also to provide posters an incentive to keep providing those excellent
technical replies and perhaps improve the quality of the jokes (but that
doesn't seem to ever happen).

The Rules for Nominations and some General Rules:

* An individual wishing to submit a nomination for MVP must also provide a
short description of WHY they deserve to be MVP for the nomination to be
considered (this is a change from previous years requiring two independent
nominations)

* The years postings are somewhat reviewed to ensure that this is someone who
posts quality answers. ( Not that anyone has ever been rejected on this basis)

* Only those that have registered on the ARSlist before July 3rd 2013 will be
eligible to vote. It is assumed you won't vote if you haven't been around
long enough to know the posters in question. In the unlikely event of another
tie, the person or product with the greatest number of sources of votes will
be declared winner. If it is still a tie, a panel of past winners will
convene to break the tie.

* Voting and nominating is by the Individual REAL person, so redistribution
lists don't vote, your identity must be known, and those that have multiple
subscriptions still get only one vote

* BMC Software employees on the ARSlist are eligible to vote

* All decisions of Daniel or the oversight panel are final (if a controversial
decision is needed, 3 past MVP winners will be asked for their opinion)

* Nominations posted to the list are not accepted, they must be to
arslistawa...@wwrug.com mailto:arslistawa...@wwrug.com

* Votes posted to the list are not accepted, they must be to
arslistawa...@wwrug.com mailto:arslistawa...@wwrug.com

* Any MVP from the last 5 years and anyone from the WWRUG committee are not
eligible for nomination

In my opinion, that person should have left BMC Software during the same period
that a new subscriber is eligible to vote, so since its 3rd of July 2013 for a
new ARS Lister to be eligible to vote this year, then a candidate previously in

There is 1 Nomination, and one Vote per person. Each nomination from each
independent person, this year needs to come with a paragraph of sorts
describing WHY they feel the person in question deserves to be the 2013 MVP.

All nominations need to go to the aforementioned email address

Ok folksI remember an outcry last year, after the awards when people
were saying that they would vote, how important this list was to them, just
give you one more chancewhere is that passion? To date, we have a
total of 9 people that even sent an email...that's not much

We have 3 valid MVP nominees, and 2 BMC Above and Beyond

I know that I see more than 3 non bmc and 2 bmcers posting to the list in
the last year. There have been ALLOT of questions asked, and MANY people
that have helped out.

If you have been helped by someone on this list, and you feel they deserve
to be recognized, lets do this and recognize them. There can be only one
winner (in each category), but as a twice nominated person, I can tell you
that it was an honor to even be nominated the first time...so lets get to
this and nominate some of your favorite people on the list this year.

Remember, nominations need to be accompanied by a paragraph (or a sentence
even) saying WHY they deserve the honor of MVP.

Re: WWRUG/ARSlist Awards 2013: Nominations for MVP etc. and New Categories now open

2013-07-07 Thread arslist
Nominations have always been restricted to one per category. If the other
person\people is\are worthy of nomination, others will nominate them. Seemed
strange to me when someone nominated a person and then didn't vote for them
too, but it is the persons choice.

For the BMC Employee: Sure, to be eligible they need to be employed by BMC
as of 3rd of July to be nominated for BMC Beyond the Call of Duty.

They have to still be employed by BMC when they are nominated. They don't
have to still be an employee to receive the Award.

I have never placed a restriction on how long ago you left BMC to be
nominated for MVP, that is new ground. There was a round of BMC layoffs a
couple of months ago. May I believe. So someone may have done most
contributions for 8 months as an employee, and 4 as not. I will leave it to
the good judgement of the court of ARSlist nominators and voters, by
nominating or not, voting for or not, for those that were and aren't BMC
Employees that fall into that category (I can think of one person in
particular I expect this to apply to). Personally I think a contribution of
someone that was clearly to the benefit of the ARSlist, i.e. the BMC Remedy
community, should be recognized one way or another so I am not inclined to
get very technical on the rules around it. Those rules that do exist were
created after a few years when a company did try to stack the deck in it's
favour, and I did not consider that in the spirit of the ARSlist, so I added
rules to avoid what they did. It is also the only year I voted.

Daniel

p.s. and don't forget, we accept suggestions for other categories of Awards
as well, keep them positive. Not greatest number of silly questions in one
year (the record was 25+ in two days; I tried to help the person by phoning
her to say she is welcome to continue asking the list but suggested reading
the manual that would answer them all and she screamed at me how dare I call
and suggest she read the manual, I have phoned no one since, but I digress)

There is 1 Nomination, and one Vote per person. Each nomination from each
independent person, this year needs to come with a paragraph of sorts
describing WHY they feel the person in question deserves to be the 2013 MVP.

All nominations need to go to the aforementioned email address

And the rule has always been that you cannot work for BMC and be
nominated...and I assume the person in question is no longer an
employee...I'm not entirely sure about the rules regarding this...not sure
we have come across a rule regarding this in the past...I'll let Daniel

Daniel has chosen to do things a bit differently this year. He has decided
to let the incumbent MVP, that's me this year, run the Awards.

This is the 18th Annual ARSlist Awards, Call For Nominations.

These awards were created by Daniel in 1995 to recognize the efforts of
posters asking questions, those providing answers, and sometimes even of
those providing what is titled as Friday Humor, and even sometimes gets a
laugh.

It was also to provide posters an incentive to keep providing those
excellent technical replies and perhaps improve the quality of the jokes
(but that doesn't seem to ever happen).

The Rules for Nominations and some General Rules:

* An individual wishing to submit a nomination for MVP must also provide a
short description of WHY they deserve to be MVP for the nomination to be
considered (this is a change from previous years requiring two independent
nominations)

* The years postings are somewhat reviewed to ensure that this is someone
who posts quality answers. ( Not that anyone has ever been rejected on this
basis)

* Only those that have registered on the ARSlist before July 3rd 2013 will
be eligible to vote. It is assumed you won't vote if you haven't been
around long enough to know the posters in question. In the unlikely event
of another tie, the person or product with the greatest number of sources of
votes will be declared winner. If it is still a tie, a panel of past
winners will convene to break the tie.

* Voting and nominating is by the Individual REAL person, so redistribution
lists don't vote, your identity must be known, and those that have multiple
subscriptions still get only one vote

* BMC Software employees on the ARSlist are eligible to vote

* All decisions of Daniel or the oversight panel are final (if a
controversial decision is needed, 3 past MVP winners will be asked for their
opinion)

* Nominations posted to the list are not accepted, they must be to
arslistawa...@wwrug.com

* Votes posted to the list are not accepted, they must be to
arslistawa...@wwrug.com

* Any MVP from the last 5 years and anyone from the WWRUG committee are not
eligible for nomination

Past MVP [Most Valuable Poster Award] recipients are:

-

2012 LJ LongWing

2011 Misi Mladoniczky

2010 Joe D'Souza

2009 Dr. Christopher Strauss

2007 Rick Cook

2006 Axton Grams

2000 Jarl Groneng, Tommy Nijem

1999 Rick Cook

1998 Raymond Leach

1997 Vicky Bayol

1996 Joel D. Sender

1995 Martin Nystrom

So, the two open categories are

-

*MVP - Most Valuable Poster.

This is the person you feel has contributed the most to the list in a
combination of quality and quantity. Anyone who has won the award in the
last 5 years, current BMC or BMC Remedy employees are not eligible. An
individual must be nominated by at least two independent sources.

BMC Software Employee: Beyond the Call of Duty Award (Note, they must be a
current employee to qualify)

Again, an individual must be nominated by at least two independent sources.

Nominations for other Categories are also open until July 21st

Nominate a potential winner for another Category while you suggest the
category if you wish

[no Nominations, no Award will be conferred in that category there must be
more than one Nomination for a category etc.]

Please send nominations to arslistawa...@wwrug.com

Software categories are currently being handled by on-site Awards at WWRUG
with the vendors in the Showcase being eligible. The ARSlist Awards are not
currently contemplating software categories.

Time Lines:

July 3rd : This message is posting opening Nominations

July 21st : Nominations for MVP and other categories close

July 22nd: Voting begins for 4 weeks for MVP and other categories

August 18th: The voting closes at 5 p.m. EST

In my opinion, that person should have left BMC Software during the same
period that a new subscriber is eligible to vote, so since its 3rd of July
2013 for a new ARS Lister to be eligible to vote this year, then a candidate
previously in employment with BMC Software should have left BMC before 3rd
July 2013 as well to be eligible. IF not that date then some reasonable date
that is in some way related to the voting eligibility date to keep the rule
consistent every year.

 Yes, that's a bug.
No, we fixed it this way.
 Here's another approach.

Of course, there's another way to do it!

If any of these happened to you (except for that last one) because of

2012-08-03 Thread Longwing, LJ CTR MDA/IC
ARSList,
I beg you all to go out and nominate. Every year Daniel goes through the
effort to get people to participate, I was shocked last year when I tried to
nominate two people and Dan said I could only nominate one, and that if two
sources nominated each of the people I wanted to be on the ballot, they would
be. There are a lot of people on this list that have benefited from others
time and effort. If you have been helped by ANYONE this year, please take the
time out of YOUR day and nominate them. I would personally love to see a list
of at least 6 people to be able to vote from this year.

**

**

Sorry for the long post, it is needed for this:

As Founder of the ARSlist in November 1993,

it is my privilege to announce the 17th Annual ARSlist Awards, Call For
Nominations.

These awards were created by me in 1995

to recognize the effort that other people were putting into the list by

providing the questions, the excellent technical replies and frequently
mediocre humour.

It was also to provide posters an incentive to keep providing those excellent
technical replies

and perhaps improve the humour.

The Rules for Nominations and some General Rules:

* An individual must be nominated by at least two independent sources

* The years postings are somewhat reviewed to ensure that this is someone who
posts quality answers.

( Not that anyone has ever been rejected on this basis)

* Only those that have registered on the ARSlist before August 1st. 2012 will
be eligible to vote.

It is assumed you won't vote if you haven't been around long enough to know the
posters in question.

In the unlikely event of another tie, the person or product with the greatest
number of sources of votes will be declared winner.

If it is still a tie, a panel of past winners will convene to break the tie.

* Voting and nominating is by the Individual REAL person,

so redistribution lists don't vote, your identity must be known,

and those that have multiple subscriptions still get only one vote

* BMCSoftware employees on the ARSlist are eligible to vote

* All decisions of myself or the oversight panel are final

(if I have to make a controversial decision, I confer with 3 past MVP winners
for their opinion)

* Nominations posted to the list are not accepted, they must be to
d...@wwrug.com

* Votes posted to the list are not accepted, they must be to d...@wwrug.com

Past MVP [Most Valuable Poster Award] recipients are:

2011 Misi Mladoniczky

2010 Joe D'Souza

2009 Dr. Christopher Strauss

2007 Rick Cook

2006 Axton Grams

---

2005 Tim Widowfield

2004 Matt Reinfeldt

2003 Carey Matthew Black

2002 Chris Woyton

2001 Gidd Calden

2000 Jarl Groneng, Tommy Nijem

1999 Rick Cook

1998 Raymond Leach

1997 Vicky Bayol

1996 Joel D. Sender

1995 Martin Nystrom

In the MVP list above, anyone after 2005 is not eligible,

and neither am I or the Advisory Board of the Conference

So, the two open categories are

-

*MVP - Most Valuable Poster.

This is the person you feel has contributed the most to the list in a
combination of quality and quantity.

Anyone who has won the award in the last 5 years, current BMC or BMC Remedy
employees are not eligible.

An individual must be nominated by at least two independent sources.

BMC Software Employee: Beyond the Call of Duty Award

Again, an individual must be nominated by at least two independent sources.

Nominations for other Categories are also open until August 17th

Nominate a potential winner for another Category while you suggest the category
if you wish

[no Nominations, no Award will be conferred in that category

there must be more than one Nomination for a category etc.]

Please send nominations to d...@wwrug.com

Software categories are currently being handled by on-site Awards at WWRUG with
the vendors in the Showcase being

eligible. The ARSlist Awards are not currently contemplating software
categories.

Time Lines:

August 1st : This message is posting opening Nominations

August 17th: Nominations for MVP closes, other category nominations close
August 22nd: Voting begins for 2 weeks for MVP and other categories

September 5th: The voting closes at 5 p.m. EST

Thursday October 18th at WWRUG12: Award Ceremony during the WWRUG Awards
keynote.

[no one knows the winner(s) until then, well okay, except me and the plaque
company]

Please send nominations to d...@wwrug.com

Thanks ... Daniel

Hello from the conference in Las Vegas

For the first time this year, the ARSLIST award winners were announced
in near-real time on Twitter :-) But for the rest of us, here's what
I remember (Dan et all, please add the ones I missed!)

There were, a number of varied, goofy, unusual and amusing awards...
you'll just have to come to the next conference to enjoy these. There
were also pictures and songs from previous RUG's and Userworld
conferences, music and an impassioned speech from Phil Bautista about
organizing Remedy User Groups. At several times the presentations were
interrupted by spontaneous tossing of the official WWRUG food item:
Twinkies! Doug Mueller was kind enough to explain the significance of
the fond association between RUG attendees and Twinkies.

 Most posts: LJ Longwing (350)
Longest Thread: (most posts on a single topic) History of the AR
System (90) Jet Lag Award - Australia (fellow from New Zealand wasn't
 in the room!)

BMC Employee Beyond The Call of Duty award: Kelly Deaver (who is no
longer a BMC employee but was during the nomination and voting period)

Most Valuable ARSLIST Poster: Dr. Christopher Strauss

 Congratulations!

Now, I've got to attend some of the sessions and learn some more stuff!

Normally, I loathe me too's, especially to a list server, but on this
occasion I'll add my Me too! Congratualations Dr. Christopher Strauss, your
countless, detailed and thoughtful posts have helped many of us that gather
perls of knowledge from this ARList oyster bed, often without posting
ourselves. You've not only earned a congratulations, but also the best
compliment I can give to a fellow lister, I always read your posts.

Michael,

You're right, of course. Dan looked for the NZ person first. There
were a few small technical glitches in the ARSLIST Awards event, and
the potential for distraction (and catastrophic sugar rush) was great.

The Jet Lag Award might depend on which direction you flew

We'll just have to ask Dan!
