[Asterisk-Users] Re: 5, 000 concurrent calls system rollout question

2006-02-02 Thread Mike Hammett
Why is using ulaw or alaw an unlikely scenario? I wouldn't use anything but
ulaw\alaw. The Bells can compete on price and will if they have to. Where
they CAN'T compete is quality. If there were something better than 711, I'd
offer that. Well, there is 722, but not many things support it.

Hi, Joash,

thank you for your email. I was very relieved to hear that someone was
already doing this.

Can you please tell me more about your test? Why did you test it in a
first place?

For me, we need to come up with a system that needs to:

1. Handle 5,000 inbound SIP calls

2. offer IVR capability

3. Billing

You'd probably have to do some of your own work on this. * makes 'CDR'
records but...well...you have to be careful how you do your scripts if you
want legible/useable CDRs. There are some apps out there though that will
process and do some sort of billing for CDRs not sure of what where.

I thought that Asterisk would be up to the task, but, I am not sure as
to:

1. How many servers should I consider? 4? 10? Obviously, we will be
talking about probably core Xeon servers if this is what we need.

I'd say atleast 10maybe more...depending wholly on codec/transcoding
and amount of IVR scripting.

2. How hard would it be to implement?

Well...since your not well versed with *, and you're having trouble
understanding the difference between a protocol and a codec, it might be
really difficult for you. You might want to farm it out. There are a LOT
of * consultancies out there now. If you can get up to speed on asterisk
pretty quickly and the various protocols and codecs then it's not
impossible. The kicker is all the management/maintenance UI's and such.
But you might be able to use something like Signates sigMAN (never used it
or their products).

3. How bad is g729 quality?

4. IVR : if the call is SIP, can we do prompts without transcoding?

You're confusing protocols with codec's here again. SIP is not a codec.
That said if your SIP client is using GSM and there are GSM prompts
available then the asterisk playback functions will use the GSM encoded
prompts.

Earlier you'd mentioned using POTS lines coming in/out. If you're
gatewaying 5k POTS lines you'll need a lot of machines. Because you'll be
doing a lot of transcoding POTS is ulaw or alaw (depending on where in
the

world you are) and unless you use (uncompressed) ulaw or alaw on your SIP
clients (very unlikely scenario) you'll be transcoding to/from GSM. G.729

[Asterisk-Users] Re: ztdummy

2006-01-31 Thread Mike Hammett
So since the ztdummy driver is running on the host OS, and Asterisk is
running in a VPS, what driver files do I need to pass through to the VPS for
Asterisk to properly see ztdummy?

How do I test to see if Asterisk knows ztdummy is present or not on that
particular VPS?

The /dev/zap directory has the files channel, ctl, pseudo, and timer. Which
of those do I need to pass through? Are there more elsewhere?

The ztdummy is actually running on the host OS, which is not affected (IIRC)
by any virtualization controls, so the interrupts/second shouldn't be an
issue.

ztdummy (of kernel 2.6) should not require anything from the host.
However are you sure you can use different kernels for the host and the
guest with your VPS?

It does generate a load of 1000 interrupts per second. This means tha
tyou always need CPU time. And a timely response of it.

It can be done, are those 3000 calls sip to sip ? If so it could easily
be done, if they are not sip to sip you will need a bunch of servers.

It does use the same kernel for everything. It's a specially modified

Hi Mike,

You must continue - for zaptel only - to make linux26, as it is
described

in the companion file README.Linux26 in the Zaptel folder
(/usr/src/zaptel).
Read the text from this file, as suggested in its title :

To build for Linux 2.6, first you must be sure that you have a
symlink to your linux-2.6 sources in /usr/src/linux-2.6. The 2.6
kernel no longer needs the full sourcecode to build against it. You
can create the symlink to /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/ and then
you can type:

# make linux26
# make install

Note that you will also need CRC-CCITT functions compiled
with your kernel or as a kernel module. These can be
selected from the Library Routines submenu during kernel
configuration via make menuconfig

It is a good habit to read all this README... files before to do
something, as it is important to read any user manual for any sofisticated
equipment ;-)

Good luck !

Best Regards,
Francois BERGERET,
France.

I thought I read somewhere that you no longer have to do a special make
command for the 2.6 kernel. Is this true, or should I still make linux26?
I'm having problems getting anything zaptel to load properly.

[Asterisk-Users] Re: Zaptel issues

2006-01-23 Thread Mike Hammett
Yeah, recompiling the kernel is a bit over my head, but I don't want to
install an older gcc, so I'll just have to await some hand-holding from the
people that put my kernel together (OpenVZ).

I think you have comiled your kernel with a version of gcc and zaptel
with another one, Compile zaptel drivers with gcc-3.3 and you will
solve it, otherwise, you cas recompile your kernel with the new
version of gcc.

i also had that problem.

It looks like my gcc versions are different from the one that made the

If the RTP is redirected, does this put the system
under a smaller load? Obviously less network usage, but what about

After talking with Mike Hammett on #asterisk, it seems that the variable
MODCONF in his makefie managed to get undefined. He has kernel 2.6. He
uses some sort of virtual host settings and this is probably why none of
the standard locations apply.

Though I figure that he won't be easily able to load modules anyway.

Still, the makefile should not fail as badly there when MODCONF is not
detected. Not to mention the fact that the content of that file is
practically useless.

In this instance I think you're asking the wrong question. Asterisk
will scale better on a processor that handles branching better, so the
AMDs with the shorter pipelines will help here a lot.

I see Asterisk can be compiled for x64 systems. Does it run any
better\worse on x64 versus i386?

I have heard good reports from x64 systems. Especially the AMD variety
that isn't drain bamaged.

Dual-core CPU performance isn't as good as dual CPU's, but is more
often than not a better deal as it's close, but a lot cheaper.
Dual-core vs. Dual CPU performance depends on the application. How
does Asterisk respond?

Looking to build out a system capable of 100 concurrent calls (IP
pass-through, so in effect 200). Looking at the dimensioning, I can
get some ideas, but few of them state the call quality. I'm hoping to
be able to use a single CPU that is dual core as the price to go to a
dual CPU that is single core puts me at least 60% to a redundant server.

Asuming no AGI, a single p4 will handle 200 calls.

there's your problem right there. what codecs are the SIP peer set to use
?

apparently, asterisk cant translate between ulaw and the unknown codec.

I don't know where I read it, apparently it is needed for timing or

could be in the old handbook or hitchikers guide to asterisk as I havn't

IAX trunking works even without digium cards as long as the ztdummy pseudo

[Asterisk-Users] IAXy echo?

2005-11-14 Thread Mike Hammett

I've got two customers on the same broadband
provider. Same Asterisk box on my end. Same CLEC.

One has an IAXy and the other has an Asterisk box
with an array of devices (Grandstream, Cisco, ATCOM, xten, etc.).

The people behind the Asterisk box have had no
audio quality issues. The person with the IAXy often encounters an
echo. The echo is only heard on the remote side and it only contains the
remote caller's voice. This echo has been heard with the remote side being
varying LECs. The echo is not always there. I'd almost say that the
echo is not there more than it is.

Troubleshooting next step?

I haven't changed out the IAXy because I don't have
any other ATAs to put in place.

Therefore, the code was quickly moved to C# on the
.net platform. This gives Asterisk a lot of new features,
including being fully integrated with Microsoft Exchange
 and Microsoft Active Directory.
With all the user data stored in Active Directory, we
finally have the user under full control. Users can
dial in to the PBX to change their Windows password. We
can also implement single-sign-on based on DTMF from a
cell phone or WiFi phone. says Kelvin Reming. The C#
language gives us much more modern code. And I'm so
happy to get rid of the stupid-looking arctic bird,
an ugly animal that that couldn't even fly.

Shame this is just an april fool, I like the sound of this! Though it
would be going head to head with Live Communications Server...

I guess you missed the real joke there (the stability and secureness
of .net)

Ya, I mean do you really think an open source community is gonna
acknowledge that MS can do anything right? of course not. THEY'RE THE
DEVIL!
(note, I will not respond to anything posted in reply to this, so don't
even try)

I don't know following has debated here or not, but is there in this
world following stuff:

A small, physically small box, like cable/DSL router, which comes with:
1) Ethernet port, 2) Console port, 3) CompactFlash or USB port, 4)
memory module port, like SODIMM

Box has built-in flash (256MB or 512MB) with or without Linux and
feature to upgrade built-in RAM (128/256M) by adding memory module and
storage via CompactFlash/USB.

Box should have inexpensive x86 CPU in 500Mhz-1Ghz range without
active cooling and should not have VGA port. It also should not have
price tag more then $200.

Anybody have seen stuff like this? Linksys NSLU2 and MacMini are not
an option.

That sucks. Perhaps someone ought to make note of that on the FTP server.
