[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Active 2.1 speaker system suggestions, anyone?
My kitchen is a bit smaller than yours (about 25sqm), but I would think they would be fine. I've no idea how well they would perform in a 65sqm area - that might be pushing it a bit too far... -- mick_w http://freespace.virgin.net/mick.webb/ mick_w's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6526 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32026 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I'm using a set of Acoustic Energy Aego M's in my kitchen and the sound really good. http://www.acoustic-energy.co.uk/Product_range/Aego_series/Aego_M.asp You really can't go wrong with these - search the forum and you'll find many people here using them. In the UK they normally sell for £99 and if you buy them direct from the AE website you should be able to order the wall mounting kit (which is an accessory) at the same time. -- mick_w http://freespace.virgin.net/mick.webb/ mick_w's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6526 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32026 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: A Cut-Rate Audio philes Experience With a Linear Power Supply
Yes I did test the voltage (spot on 5V), yes I did wire the unit correctly, and yes I did have it running for over 4 weeks constantly before I tried the A/B test. (I don't want to start a flame either, but running in a power supply shouldn't really make any difference if its working correctly to start with...) Like I've said above, I couldn't tell the difference even though I really wanted to believe the linear PS was better. My initial impressions that the new PS was better was a pure placebo effect. Is everyone else on this thread using linear power supplies? and are you claiming yours doesn't get hot or hum ? (find a really quiet room and put your ear next to it) To reiterate, I wouldn't dare claim the linear power supply mod is just snake oil, but it my system it didn't make a blind bit of difference; other (more expensive?) systems might resolve the improvements. -- mick_w http://freespace.virgin.net/mick.webb/ mick_w's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6526 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31758 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: A Cut-Rate Audio philes Experience With a Linear Power Supply
The lower efficiency of linear power supplies results in them getting hotter than a switching power supply, thats just physics - (the conservation of energy) The hum I referred to is being emitted from the PS (not as signal through the amp) google "transformer hum", it appears they all do it to some extent or another - as I say, its very quiet, but it annoyed me... For reference, the power supply I tried was a brand new Power One 5V/3A unit. I'm sort of glad my system can't resolve the differences other people can hear with power supplies; messing about with batteries and tin foil seems like a poor work around to get non-degraded performance from a SB3. -- mick_w http://freespace.virgin.net/mick.webb/ mick_w's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6526 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31758 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: A Cut-Rate Audio philes Experience With a Linear Power Supply
At last a thread about power supplies where I feel I might not get shot on site for sharing my findings! Last year I put together a DIY linear power supply (Power 1 5V/3A unit as recommended on various other threads) to try this out... After running it for over a month and totally believing the sound had seriously improved, I tried the A/B test (not blind) between the existing switcher and the new linear. For reference I completely removed the switcher from the supply when it wasn't in use. As the other poster pointed out having to wait for the SB3 to boot makes it difficult to quickly switch, but after lots of switches I couldn't tell any difference (and I really wanted to hear one - I was certain before the test the linear was best). Either the power supply made such a small difference I couldn't hear it, or my system is to poor to resolve it. My system comprises of: Speakers - Kef iQ5 Amplifier - Arcam A65 plus Interconnects - QED Qunex 3 Speaker Cable - QED Silver Anniversary Bi-Wire The final nail in the coffin for the linear supply is the fact it gets quite hot (even outside any enclosure) and makes an audible humming sound all the time (very quite but it bugged me). I'm now back to the standard switcher and I'm very happy. Just a thought, there has been lots of comments about the bad quality of mains power supply in various areas of the US (New York has been mentioned as being rather bad in another post), could this influence the difference between linear and switching units? -- mick_w http://freespace.virgin.net/mick.webb/ mick_w's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6526 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31758 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
