[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese Naming Traditions question
Repost for Pat McCoy: Thanks, Joao! >From what I've learned, Ermelinda CARREIRO MEDEIROS NUNES was born about 1882 in Arrifes, Sao Miguel, Azores. On her marriage record of September 24, 1904, her parents are listed as: Jose C. and Rosa De Jesus. That's why I'm curious where MEDEIROS came from. Thanks, again. Adding to John V's comments, I stay at residencials in Ponta Delgada (São Miguel), Angra do Heroísmo (Terceira) and Horta (Faial). Plus, I can request recommendations for others from friends who live in the Azores, if you need. Contact me privately for more details. Also, our last trip to the Azores was in late October - early November, and the weather was still fine (only one really rainy day out of 10). Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: RootsMagic 5 (genealogy software) on sale through Dec. 22nd
Celeste, There's a User Group just north of you in Oakland. They meet the 3rd Thursday of the month: http://www.rootsmagic.com/User-Groups/ I'd email Bruce Buzbee and tell him your version 4 is still sealed and see if he lets you exchange it. Luckily for me, Wholly Genes, who produces "The Master Genealogist" gives a really good discount if the software was purchased x months before the new one was released. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: MA Naturalization Records
Hi Elaine, Thank you for your very kind offer. I do not have a subscription to Footnote, but do for Ancestry. On Ancestry, I found the Naturalization index card for my grandfather. In 1906 he was spelling his name as Joseph Vera and the address on the card (correct for that time) is 140 Allen Street, New Bedford, MA.There is so little I know about this man and am hoping the Footnote records may have some clues that I can use to research him and his line prior to 1906.Thanks again. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: RootsMagic 5 (genealogy software) on sale through Dec. 22nd
With my computer crash and the holidays upon us, I have not installed the version 4. It is still sealed in the case. My thought is that by the time I get to it, I will have a compatability issue very soon. I find myself fearing another change and, at my age, the learning curve gets steeper! Thanks for the thoughts. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] transferring genealogy programs
Thanks, Cheri. I tend to think you are correct. The gedcoms I have received did not have all the information I have in my "notes" section of my files. I have not had time to read the book on Roots Magic 4 I purchased when I bought the program. I probably will not get to it until after the holidays. It carries over only certain codes (b, m, d, notes, bapt, christening, etc). It doesn't carry over multimedia of any time. I haven't monkeyed around with RootsMagic in a while, but if it can directly read from FTM, that would better than doing a Gedcom. In RootsMagic, look under File, then Import. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] transferring genealogy programs
Thanks Robin. I am still researching to see if I can find a solution that works for me. Since I have all my information in FTM 16, the only way I can use a memory stick is if the computer has FTM 16, I think. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese Naming Traditions question
It depends on the epoch. Before XIXth Century there's no standard in surnaming. People got their surnames from parents (any combination, paterna+maternal, maternal+paterna, only paternal, only maternal), from grandparents (any of them), from uncles/aunts, and, and from godparents (not common). Sometimes they add alcunhas ("tall", "fat", "white", "blond", "thin", etc), toponyms (Manuel Fernandes from Lisboa turned adopting Manuel Fernands Lisboa as name) and professions (mariante, sapateiro, ferreiro, etc). Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: What time of the year is best to go to the Azores
Hi Vivian, If you can possibly fit it into your schedule, I would recommend that you go for two or three weeks minimum. Transatlantic Airfare is such a major expense that it doesn't make sense to stay only a week (unless that's all the vacation you get). Another recommendation I would make is to stay at Residentials instead of hotels. They are less expensive and an interesting cultural experience. I know of Residentials in Lisbon, Pico, and Faial where they speak English and are conveniently located. Contact me privately and I can give you more details. Getting to your original request, The last trip to the Azores, we went in September and it was great . You may miss the flowers but it was more relaxed.
