Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Researching Capelas on São Miguel?
Thank you so much for your help Judi. I have Francisca do Rego's parents as Mauel Martins Velho and Maria Ledo. Sounds like the same couple. Thank you for looking up that record for me. Perhaps it will shine a light on Filipe Borges' parents as well as letting me know more on her parents names as well. Hi Altino, The old family search has 2 listings for Phelipe Borges born abt. 1659 and Francisca do Rego b. abt. 1663, married 15 Aug 1682 and 27 Aug 1682. Francisca's parents are Manoel de Mello Martins and Maria Leda. Phelipe and Francisca were both born in Acores, no listing for Capelas. No other information is listed. My paternal line is from Capelas, going back to 1632. I do not have Felipe and Francisca, but I do have a Manoel de Melo married to Isabel de Benevides abt. 1700. Their children are Antonia de Melo Cabral b. abt 1712 married to Estevao Travassos, and Antonio de Melo married to Maria de Jesus. I will look for Felipe and Francisca when I go to the FHC on Saturday, but chances are Felipe's parents will not be listed. Let me know if anything sounds familiar. Luisa Mota-Vieira Genetics and Molecular Pathology Unit, Hospital of Divino Espírito Santo, 9500-370 Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal; and Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Oeiras, Portugal. *Abstract* Geographic isolation is a significant factor to consider when characterizing human populations. The knowledge of the genetic structure of isolated populations has been of great importance to disease-locus positioning and gene identification. To investigate the genetic structure of the Azorean population, we conducted a survey based on the frequencies of surnames listed in the 2001 telephone book. We calculated the following parameters: isonymy (*I*), the random component of inbreeding (*FST*), genetic diversity according to Fisher (α), Karlin-McGregor's migration rate (ν), and Nei's distance. For the 1,271 subscribers and 163 different surnames, Graciosa island presented the lowest value of abundance of surnames (α = 15.75), suggesting great genetic isolation compared to the other eight islands. Migration, calculated on the basis of the diversity of surnames within islands, ranged from 0.2747 (Corvo island) to 0.0026 (São Miguel island), indicating that people migrated preferentially toward the economically more developed islands. The value of the random component of inbreeding obtained for the whole population (*FST* = 0.0039) indicates little genetic differentiation (Wright's *FST*0.05). Moreover, isonymy similarity revealed using the UPGMA method shows three subclusters corresponding to the geographic distribution of the islands. *Keywords* Azore Islands, surnames, isonymy, inbreeding, diversity, isolated population. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] clarify record please
Mike, Madeiros sounds like it should be a corruption of the surname Medeiros. Madeira is a different archipelago. It's not part of the Azores. Maybe someone else has another idea for that place name. You'll need a different record. Try for the marriage at St. John the Baptist as we discussed before or you can try the city records as Elaine suggested in a previous post. An immigrant of that time period is more likely to give his freguesia to another Portuguese entity. What I mean by that, is he more likely to be more general with the U.S. government (WWI Draft, censuses) than he is where they are speaking Portuguese and have some knowledge of the Azores (like the first Portuguese church in America - St. John the Baptist) or if he belonged to a Portuguese Society or if his family stated it in his U.S. obituary. Example: When I'm traveling, people ask where I'm from. I say Los Angeles. I don't live in Los Angeles itself. I do live in Los Angeles County. But if I'm out of state, I say Los Angeles because most people know where that is. Now, when I'm with the Portuguese band, I say I'm from Artesia (it's part of Los Angeles county too). I don't live there either, but when I'm with them, just say that. So think about the circumstances your immigrant ancestor was in. It helps explain some of their vague answers. Hi, If I may, I would like the point out the surname is TEIXEIRA. Rosemarie Hi Gayle, Thank you for the insights. I was at such a loss to comprehend this record. This priest's handwriting is just awful. Your confirmation of the date opens up further mystery since I was looking for the marriage of my 4th ggrandmother, Marianna Clara's parents. On Mariana's marriage record in June 9, 1800 her age is given as 26 years old and I spent a whole day looking at all the baptisms in Velas for 1770s and never could find herso I thought maybe if I could find her parents marriage and look for other siblings I could find her along the way or perhaps other clues. I started with 1750 on a whim thinking that I'd be too far back but at least I wouldn't miss it by not going far enough back. I was very surprised to find them in 1753 but I'm sure it's them. On Marianna's marriage to Antonio Pereira her parents are given as Joam de Sousa Cardoso/a? and Isabel do Rosario and since men sometimes take their mother's name as well as their father's I think that's what he did. That puts their marriage 21 years before Marianna's presumed birth date but I've seen that with my Pereira family so I know it's possible. With your information I'm wondering if I should look in Santo Amaro for Marianna's birth instead of Velasmaybe they moved there and that's why I couldn't find her anywhere in Velas in the 1770's. Thanks for your helpnow I know Isabel's parents names. I wish the records from these times gave the ages of the couple since it's a valuable clue when looking for birth records! Also, I couldn't tell if Joam was the son Of Joam Teixeira or Pereira and now Peixeiro? is in the mix. Perhaps someone else will give insight into that surname. I have Peixodo's in my record but I've never seen Peixeiro before. I'll spend tomorrow looking for Marianna in Santo Amaro baptisms for 1770's and hope I have more luck! On another note, I remember we're cousins from Candelaria and while at the conference in SLC I discovered 2 more cousins...sister who were there, also with Candelaria ancestors...perhaps they match with you as well.
