[AZORES-Genealogy] (da) Silva, George Faustino, Sao Jorge, Calheta and Luiz(s) from Terciera- California Silvas from Gustine, Merced, Manteca, San Rafael. .

2011-11-20 Thread PearlCat 500
I am looking for my family history on the Portuguese side. My
grandfather's side, who I never really got to meet, are from Sao
Jorge. I went to a funeral one time for one of my great aunts who had
passed and some of the family was there.
Here is what I have;
My Grandfather was George Faustine (da) Silva.
His mother was Arminda Aurora Luiz(s). She was born 8 Mar 1889 in Sao
Terceira, Azores. She died 6 Jan 1952 in Manteca, San Joaquin,
California. She was the daughter of Manual Sineiro Luiz(s) and Maria
D' Ascension Dias. She married George Faustino da Silva (my great
grandfather) 26 Jul 1906 in Calheta, Sao Jorge at St Catherine's. I
have the marriage papers (copy of from my Uncle Richard) and the
release of citizenship from the King.
The children are;
George (my grandfather)
Henry E
Frank E
Alma
William
Elsie
Mary
Maryann
Gordon
Jerry
Great Grandpa- Jorgee Faustino da Silva. His first name was changed
in spelling to George, they dropped the (da). The one married to
Arminda is who I am now giving info on. He was born 15 Aug 1880 in Sao
Jorge, Azores. He died 13 Jun 1950, Manteca, Ca.
His father was Jorge Faustino da Silva. He married a lady who had the
last name of Neves.
My Grandfather married a Catherine Cook. They had four children-
Richard, Evelyn, George and Mary.
Arminda told my mother how her family left Terciera in the middle of
the night. Her father either was a Captain of or worked on one of the
slave ships. They then went to Calheta, Sao Jorge.
If anyone can send any information it would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Robin W Lebo

2011-11-21 Thread Robin Lebo
Dear Adair,
My records are limited to what I have found on websites and what I was told
which is not much. I have been searching but there are so many with similar
names.

My great grandmother Arminda Aurora Luiz(s)went through Ellis Island. She
married Jorge Faustino da Silva in the Azores. Sao Jorge, Calheta, Santa
Catherines(?) in 1906, then she came to America. I have not found the records
for Jorge, just his citizenship in Calif. It is under George F Silva in San
Rafael, Ca
My Grandfather, George Faustine Silva was born on Feb 24, 1909 in San Rafael,
Ca. He was a logger above Sonora before becoming a janitor in the Valley. He
had a broken back from falling off the tank house as a kid.
Jorge (George) and Arminda eventually had a small dairy in the Merced area. If
I get that info correct according to my mom. She has talked about other
properties her Uncles had that are now gone. My mother, Evelyn, was baptized,
but the records burned, she had to find the 90 year old priest to confirm it.
That is on record in Chowchilla's Catholic Church. She was born in a barn on
the dairy.
My Great Uncle used to donate the beef for the Manteca Festa years ago. My mom
was raised in Manteca and Stockton and went to St. Mary's high school in
Stockton, Ca. I was born in Stockton, but I grew up in Porterville, Ca.
I was told there used to be a family gathering every year in Gustine. I have
old pictures of relatives but I don't know who they are. I never really talked
to Avo George about his family, never saw cousins. My mom has though. She says
we are related to Silva, Pimentel, Borba, Luis(z), Diaz. They are cousins she
says.
Now I have to put the puzzle together. Hopefully I can find some cousins I
don't know. I have been taking my Grandfather's siblings and trying to get that
info because it is all California. That is why I listed them.
I am starting to chip at the ancestral part that goes back to cousins in New
Bedford Mass and to the islands.
Thanks for the contact,
Robin Lebo

Manuel Borba(1851) and Jennie(Janet?)(1856)Solomon Silva are my great
grandparents.

They did not meet until they got to RI where they were married.

Below is a note given to me from the Historical Society for Sonoma
County. It was a quote from one of their sons.

I have yet to make the Silva connections, but it does make sense that
they migrated from RI to California to meet up with a Silva relative
(possibly her Dad). They settles in Sebastopol, Sonoma, had several
children that seem to have settled in the Northern and Central Coast
of California.

I have her father as Joseph Silva Salamina? Soloman B 1821
Azores...ut that is all I have on Jennie.

The Borba's came to the U.S./Providence RI in 1873-74. They were
Married there, Manuel and Jennie. They next went to Mendocino County
to Work in the sawmills there. Then to Alameda Co./Hayward. A
relative Joe Silva came to Sebastopol before them. So the Manuel and
Jennie Borba Family came to Sebastopol in 1892 via the Northwestern
Pacific Railroad. They rented a home on Main Street, then built their
own home on Florence Avenue, which still stands."

Dear Marcio,

The George (Jorge) b 1880 married to Arminda was born in the Azores, Sao Jorge.
He came to America in 1898. He had left the Azores with some cousins. Some of
those cousins got off in Brazil. Two stayed with him to America.

My mother remembers an Uncle Manuel and an Uncle John that were his brothers.
One of them had a wife named Rose.

George (Jorge) and Arminda's children were the ones to start the Calif line.

George married Catherine Cook b 1912, Concrete, Wa
Henry married Catherine's sister Nina Jane Cook. He had a son named Henry Jr.
William married (?) they had a daughter named Gertrude. She was one of the
Princesses for the Manteca Festa back in the 50s.
So I have some of the info on the 9 siblings also.

Arminda's birth mother Maria d'Asension Diaz died on the boat Manuel Luis(z)
was Capt. of. At that time the family lived on Terciera. I do not know where
Arminda was born.
Manuel took Arminda to Sao Jorge after her mother's death so relatives could
help raise her. I do not know if he ever remarried. I was told he did this
after dark because he was the capt of a slave ship.

Marcio,
Just talked with my mom who called her brother. He said those were the only
names they know of. So you are probably getting better information. Spelling
and language are an issue.
I have been watching the videos. They are great.
Thanks so much for looking the records up.
