Re: [Bacula-users] File-based tag to skip a directory

2018-02-13 Thread C M Reinehr

Mike,

In researching this problem myself I discovered this option to tar:

*--exclude-caches*
  Exclude contents of directories containing file*CACHEDIR.TAG*,
  except for the tag file itself.

Details about the cache tagging standard can be found here:

http://www.brynosaurus.com/cachedir/spec.html

I think that this would be a good feature enhancement to Bacula but in
the interim I devised a workaround by using tar to archive the files and
directories, using cachedir.tag's & then using Bacula to back up the tar
archive.

HTH.

Cheers,

CMR

Hello, Mike,

With some other backup systems, a filename "tag" can be placed in
the directory to initiate a "skip".

For example, with BORG backup - placing the file ".nobackup" in a
directory, and configuring BORG backup with the switch...
--exclude-if-present ./nobackup

/...will tell Borg (on the fly) to skip that directory.

Does Bacula have this feature? I don't see anything in the
resource sections of the manual.

Please study the WildFile/Regex and Exclude directives from the
FileSet Options
sub-resource http://www.bacula.org/5.2.x-manuals/en/main/main/Configuring_Director.html.

Nightly backups are written to hard disk drives and then copied to a

Re: [Bacula-users] Recommended OS for VM?

2017-05-16 Thread C M Reinehr
DistroWatch.com has the most comprehensive list of Linux distro's that
I'm aware of. And, according to their home page, Mint is the most
popular of the distros & the most beginner friendly. I've never
personally used Mint but from what I understand it is pretty user
friendly. The second most popular distribution is Debian, which is what
I use, but definitely is less user friendly than Mint.

MySQL would be a good choice for your database.

Hope this helps!

My configuration, here, is to do daily backups at night to a disk array.
The backup files then are mirrored to an on-line cloud storage service
called SpiderOak. I keep several days worth of backups on the disk array
& then rely on the SpiderOak files for long term storage. In this way, I
completely have eliminated tape backups.

Re: [Bacula-users] [SOLVED] How To Change User or Group of Running Bacula-SD

2016-07-07 Thread C M Reinehr
Never mind! Sorry for the wasted bandwidth. I just figured it out.

After the line where I added my ARGS= statement is the section:

> if [ -r /etc/default/$NAME ]; then
>
> . /etc/default/$NAME
>
> fi

which, in my hurry, I overlooked. The file /etc/default/bacula-sd includes the
default parameter assignments for user & group. Since this followed my
assignment, my assignment was being overridden.

Cheers!

Re: [Bacula-users] How To Change User or Group of Running Bacula-SD

2016-07-07 Thread C M Reinehr
Heitor,

Thanks! That was my understanding. The file, /etc/init.d/bacula-sd, includes
the shell function:

> do_start()
> {
>
> start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --pidfile $PIDFILE \
> --oknodo --exec $DAEMON -- -c $CONFIG $ARGS
>
> }

So, along with the other parameter assignment statements I added:

> ARGS="-u root -g bacula"

thinking that this would do it after a restart. But, it didn't. after the
restart bacula-sd still was running as bacula/tape. Either those are not the
correct options or they are being overridden somehow -- or I just don't
understand shell programming. :-)

Cheers!

[Bacula-users] How To Change User or Group of Running Bacula-SD

2016-07-07 Thread C M Reinehr
This question is directed to those familiar with the packaging of Bacula for
Debian Linux systems. I am completing the installation of Bacula (v5.2.6) for
a Debian "Stable" ("Jessie", v8.5) system and have a question about the user &
group identity of the bacula-sd daemon.

>From running the command `ps -ef` I determined that the default identity is
user: bacula & group: tape. Since I'm doing backups only to disk, for
convenience I want to change the group to bacula, but I haven't been able to
figure out how.

Unless I've overlooked something the documentation states only that you CAN
change the user & group of the running daemons but doesn't explain how. By
examining the manual pages for the daemons I saw the options "-u " & "-g
" that could be added to the bacula-sd command so I attempted to add a
"$ARGS" argument to the bacula-sd SysV init file. It didn't work. I'm pretty
sure that I did this correctly but bacula-sd always runs as bacula/tape. (FYI,
this worked in previous versions of Bacula that I have used.)

What have I missed & where can this be changed?

Thanks!

Matt,

I've been using SQLite for as long as I have used Bacula, perhaps fourteen or
fifteen years and have had zero problems. I have a small operation with ten or
twelve PC's (running Debian stable) and a couple of servers. Disk backups are
run nightly and a tape backup weekly. I've read all the recommendations to run
Postgres or MySQL but my philosophy has been "if it ain't broke, don't fix
it!" and just keep running SQLite. It's easy to set up & manage, performance
has not been a problem and it doesn't tie up a lot of system resources.

Cheers!

Tim,

I run a small shop with a dozen systems (pc's & servers) and have been using
SQLite for years with no performance problems. Like you, I have no other use
for an industrial strength database server running constantly. FWIW, my
backups all run around 2:00am when no one is working, so even if it is a
little slower, the processing is complete before anyone arrives for work. My
restores, also, likely would be faster with a faster database, but those are
so infrequent as not to be a concern.

Sincerely,

Henry,

I did almost the same as you a couple of months ago except that I only have
one Bacula director, running sqlite3. All servers & clients were running
Lenny. The new director has no difficulty connecting/communicating with the
older FD's -- about half my clients still are running Lenny. I accomplished
the entire upgrade during a Saturday afternoon.

I don't remember the specifics but I do seem to remember having a problem with
rebuilding the catalog. As I remember, I had to rebuild it manually -- it
didn't get upgraded correctly during the dist-upgrade -- so be sure to have
good backups in case of any problems. I also seem to remember that I had to
rebuild the catalog in two steps -- first from 2.4.4 to 3.x and then to 5.0.2.

You will also have to edit your conf files to allow for some changes in the
way things work after the upgrade. The only real problem here, that I can
remember, had to do with support for IPv6. Even though I use entirely IPv4
addresses the director kept complaining about the format I was using. I
finally got around it some way, but will have to look at the conf files again
to refresh my memory.

The only other problem that I've had I discussed in a post just a day or two
ago: "Debian Packaging Questions -- SQL Queries". So far, I haven't had any
replies.

I'm afraid I'm being very general here. Wish I could give you more specific
information but since I only had one system to upgrade I didn't keep any
notes.

Hope this helps!

[Bacula-users] Debian Packaging Questions -- SQL Queries

2011-08-04 Thread C M Reinehr
Several months ago, as a part of upgrading my server from Lenny to Squeeze, I
upgraded Bacula from v2.4 to v5.0. After making a few configuration changes
all seemed to be operating within normal parameters. But, at some point I
noticed that my query.sql file was empty.

Before I copy over the sample-query.sql I would like to ask if this is normal
or did I experiance a hicup in my upgrade? There is a big warning at the top
of the sample-query.sql file that these queries may not work for all sql
engines. My sql skills are rudimentary so I'd rather not spend hours debugging
these scripts if there's an easier way to repair this. (I'm using SQLite3 and,
before you say anything, I'll just say that it works for me. :-)

A second question, which may be related to the above, is in regard to certain
bconsole commands. For example, when I try to use the update volume command,
eventually I'm offered the opportunity to enter either the MediaId or Volume
name. If I enter a MediaId I receive the following error: 'sql_get.c:1062
Media record for Volume "" not found.' If I enter the full Volume name the
command works as expected. This started happening after the upgrade, so, is
this another hicup and, if so, could you point me to a solution? (Add an
index? Populate the query.sql file?)

Thanks in advance!

I stick with Debian Stable and still am running Lenny. The Bacula version is
2.4.4 and the SQLite version is 3.5.9. In the near future I'll be upgrading
to Squeeze and it looks as if that will be Bacula v5.0.2 & SQLite v3.7.3.
(So, in any case, I guess I'm good for another two years or so, until the
next Debian Stable is released! ;-)

I'm sorry to hear that. I've been using SQLite for the entire time that I've
been using Bacula -- ten years or so -- with absolutely no difficulty.
Admitedly, my needs are limited -- three servers & eight pc's -- but it's

Stuart,

I don't have the experience with or knowledge of Bacula that many others on

The short answer is no. Short of resetting the time on your server
there is
no way of making Bacula think it was last night. Also, there is no way of
grouping jobs. The simplest solution just is to make sure that your Bacula
server is up and running at the necessary times. One of the design features
of Bacula is that, once configured, it requires very little user
interaction -- just change the tapes.

I've always been a little unclear about the benefits of the .bsr files
myself
but mine is a small business so I can't speak for those with much larger,
enterprise systems. They're small and are no trouble to back up, so I keep
them against the possibility that I might really need them one day.

Again, the short answer is no. The only way to relable a volumn is to
purge
the contents. Any data in/on the volumn is lost.

I seem to recall someone saying you just could delete these files & restart
the daemons if they contain stale information. I know I've deleted them a
time or two without causing any problems.

Would that be the bacula*.state files in /var/lib/bacula. I've not read it

The short answer is no, not from within Bacula. But, there are ways around
this and it has been discussed extensively. Please check the archives.

Peder,

I'm not knowledgeable on all of the new features as I still am using an older
version, but one thought comes immediately to mind: have you
set "UseVolumeOnce = yes" in your pool definition for the virtual tape
volumes?

Re: [Bacula-users] Purging Verify Jobs

Troy,

I can't find the thread now but I think I remember this question being asked a
couple of months ago. As I recall, there was no 'canned' way to delete these
jobs from the database (other than using bconsole to delete them one at a
time) and the suggestion was to delete them with an SQL query, either
manually or with an admin job.

Pruning a volumn, whether automatic or manual, will delete/purge from the
catalog job & file records which are beyond their retention periods. If all
job & file records for the volume are deleted/purged from the catalog, then
the status of the volume will be changed to Purged.

> purge volume, or

Purge will delete/purge all job & file records from the catalog irregardless
of their retention periods. The volume status will be changed to Purged.

> update volume Volume Status

Obviously, you could manually change the status of a volume to Purged without
the volume having first been prunned or manually purged. I'm not sure what
will happen but I'm afraid that your catalog would be left in an inconsistant
state,i.e., job & file records would still be in the catalog even though they
no longer are physically on the volume. (I suspect that you would have to run
dbcheck to repair the inconsistancy.)

If I understand your situation correctly, then manually purging a volume would
be the best course of action.

Re: [Bacula-users] Restore tape data after eof

2008-11-13 Thread C M Reinehr
Heitor,

The only thing that I can think to try is 'dd'. That might be able to read
beyond an EOF mark to copy the tape image to disk. Once you have it to disk
you might be able to use 'dd' or 'vi' to manipulate the data blocks in such a
way as to construct a new file that bscan or bacula can read.

The size of this file is no problem. I routinely back up a VMware virtual disk
file which, currently, is about 7.3GB.

I'm not familiar with Zope, but it's safe to say that Bacula does not have the
ability to access individual files within the Zope database. The SOP with
other databases (e.g., Sqlite, Mysql, PostgreSQL, etc.) is to stop the
database, perform a dump using the database support tools, and then back up
the dump. (WRT VMware, it's possible to run an instance of a Bacula Client
within the VMware virtual machine.)

Of the top of my head I would say that you need to define two pools, one for
the daily backups & one for the weekly backups, with appropriate retention
times (two days, more or less). Whether backing up to tape or hard drive, I
would suggest storing one full backup per volume & then rotating volumes as
appropriate.

I believe another ramification to consider is the package management system in
use on the server. I've run into serious problems when in the past I've
contravened the package management system and placed application files
manually. If Bacula is going to be packaged, the I feel that there is no
choice but to following set down by the package management system. To do
otherwise would cause chaos. The alternative is to provide no packages at all
and force everyone to install from source into /usr/local or /opt.

As for restoring after a crash, with Debian it's simple. I do a net install of
a minimally functioning system; install the Bacula Deb packages; and, then
restore the database & configuration files. (I think, by definition, a "smart
admin" will have backed up the critical Bacula components.) Then, proceed to
rebuild the system.

x86_64 Linux
Debian Etch
Bacula 1.38.11
Installed from the Debian binary packages.
~$ ldd /usr/sbin/bacula-console
libncurses.so.5 => /lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x2b0369cbc000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x2b0369e17000)

Backspace seems to work almost as expected. If I type "status" and then
backspace so that nothing is showing on the line except for the "*" prompt
bconsole still executes the status command. If I backspace fully & then type
over with something else, then the something else is executed. If I type
something and then backspace until only one or two letters are remaining, for
example "time" ==> "t" or "trace" ==> "t" then always, time is executed. That
is, if the remaining letters are ambiguous, then bconsole executes the first
command in the help list.

Ditto, here.

Debian Etch
Bacula 1.38.11

Installed from the Debian binary packages. In bconsole the backspace is
non-destructive. This might be a side affect of the "notorious" Linux
backspace/delete key problem.

Dan,

I found this documented on the tar website:

http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/tar.html#SEC88

"Incremental backup is a special form of GNU tar archive that stores
additional metadata so that exact state of the file system can be restored
when extracting the archive."

The online manual goes into much more detail than the "man" manual page.

Don't forget to restart the bacula director or issue the reload command from
bconsole after editing bacula-dir.conf.

In the Bacula help manual, Configuring the Director/The FileSet Resource
defines the files to be backed-up.

Here's a simple FileSet definition from my setup:

FileSet {
  Name = bilskirnir
  Include {
Options {
  Signature = MD5
}
File = /etc
File = /home
File = /root
  }
  Exclude {
File = /home/lost+found
File = /home/tmp
  }
}

which backs up three directories with some exclusions.

The only thing that comes to mind would be to use 'touch' to modify the times
of the link to those of the original file. If you are using a shell script to
create your hard links you could modify it to obtain the times and then
execute touch with the appropriate options.

Ingo,

While the modification time is that of the original file, the access time &

Please do not "hijack" an existing thread. If you wish to ask an unrelated
question start a new thread. That being said,

There are three possibilities:

1) The "BeforeJob: run command "/etc/bacula/make_catalog_backup bacula
bacula
a011127"" is failing. Try to run this command from the command line and see
what happens. Note any errors. You haven't said what operating system or
version or Bacula version you are using, so I'm going to assume *NIX (Linux,
Unix, etc.) and say that make_catalog_backup is simply a shell script. Take a
look at it and see if there are any problems.

2) The BeforeJob run command is running successfully but leaving the
resultant
file, bacula.sql, in some other directory than /var/lib/bacula.

3) There is a problem with the access permissions associated with the
file /var/lib/bacula/bacula.sql or the directory /var/lib/bacula which
prevents bacula-sd from accessing the file. Does the file exist? What are the
permissions of the file and directory?

Cheers!

Likewise, my system would hang without ever going to swap. Here's a link with
a better explanation than I can manage:
https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/LCG/ServiceChallengeTechnicalFAQ

Host Tuning
 Network hangs due to memory starvation (Mark van de Sanden,
[EMAIL PROTECTED]) During one of our first service challenges we suffered
from network hangs when transfering large amounts of data. We saw this
problem not during our ''iperf'' tests but during
our ''globus-url-copy-tests''. With ''top'' we could see that the memory free
was dropping to about 10MB from the about 3GB which is available on the
system. I assume that this memory used is for file buffer cache. After a
while (about 10 - 20 minutes) the network on the node is hang state. From the
dmesg command we could see that the kernel tries to swap but is not able.
After sometime of a reboot avery works again. The solution in our case was to
limit the file buffer cache and keep memory free for tcp buffers and user
space memory. Our rule of thumb was to leave at least 10% of physical memory
free. In the linux kernel 2.6 you have the ''vm.min_free_kbytes'' which
forces the kernel to keep a minimum number of kilobytes free. How this is
forced on a 2.4 kernel I do not know.
  Our current setting is:
  '''# sysctl vm.min_free_kbytes'''
  '''vm.min_free_kbytes = 409600'''

They are talking, here, about network problems. Here, I'm not sure if it was
related to the network or not, but I could see by following the vmstat report
that the longer bacula ran during my nightly backups the lower my free memory
became until, eventually, everything just stopped.

Interestingly, I recently upgraded to the current Debian Etch from Sarge and,
having forgotten all about this adjustment, didn't make it and haven't (yet)
had any problems. (Actually, I did a full install, not an upgrade.)

Cheers!

I'm rather late to the party, but I have an idea that this might be a RAM
problem or, to be specific, that you are running out of RAM. I encountered
something similar a year or two ago. The good news is that the solution is
simply a matter of adjusting a kernel parameter. The kernel parameter that I
had to adjust was vm.min_free_kbytes, setting it to 16224 instead of the
default 4060.

Take a look at your kernel logs while the backup job is running and/or run
vmstat. If this is the problem you will quickly see it. I'm afraid that I
don't remember the details of why this worked or how I chose that particular
value. I stumbled upon some emails discussing it after googling the
particular kernel error that I was receiving; made the change & then forgot
about it.

HTH!

Look in the directory /etc/bacula/scripts. You should find a file named
make_catalog_backup. That'll do it.

This makes a very good argument that it is _not_ a permission problem, but on
the other hand, it is very unlikely to be a bug in bacula. (Since I am not
running FreeBSD anything I say at this point is a guess.) This certainly
looks similar to the problem report that you indicated at the beginning of
this thread and could be some kind of weird problem owing to a combination of
FreeBSD, Sqlite3 & Bacula.

To the best of my knowledge there is no built-in database security in Sqlite.
If you have write permission on the file you have write permission on the
database.

Let's make one more test before we shout "bug". Please set the permissions on
bacula.db to 666 (read/write for all) and see what happens.

And, while we're at it. What version of Bacula and FreeBSD are you using? Is
Bacula from a package or did you roll your own?

Cheers!

No, it means that user/group bacula:bacula can not
access /var/db/bacula/bacula.db but user/group root:root can. So, as I said
earlier, you have a permissions problem somewhere along the path.

What are the permissions of /var/db and /var?

Also, just as an experiment, you might reconfigure bacula-director to run as
root:root. If it works then you know it's a permissions/ownerwhip problem
somewhere. If not, then we're on the wrong track and need to take a closer

What are the permissions & ownership of the directories along the path to
bacula.db (var, db, bacula)?

Almost certainly a user or permissions problem. How is bacula-director
configured to run with regard to user & group? I'll bet it is not the same as
the owner/group of bacula.db.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing, but a few months
ago I
was experiencing occasional system crashes. After reviewing the logs and
googling I finally came up with a solution (at least, so far). I've forgotten
the details, but in general it had to do with the size of the packets
arriving over the network on my 100Base-T connection. Even though the system
as a whole had plenty of memory, it was unable to allocate sufficient buffer
space quickly enough. The solution was an entry in /etc/sysctl.conf to
increase a memory parameter:

$ cat sysctl.conf
#
# /etc/sysctl.conf - Configuration file for setting system variables
# See sysctl.conf (5) for information.
#
#kernel.domainname = example.com
#net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts=1
vm.min_free_kbytes=16224

Dan,

Congratulations from me, as well. Get ready for a significant culture shock as
well as a weather shock. You'll find south Florida to be a much more laid
back, casual place to work. On a more negative note, be prepaired for higher
property taxes & insurance and hurricanes. (I don't know anything about
property taxes in Ottawa but property taxes in FL are high relative to most
of the USA, and, of course you don't get many hurricanes in Ottawa :-)

I second Kern's recommendation re airconditioning. Life couldn't exist, here
in the southern US, without A/C.

Feel free to make a stop in Montgomery AL on your drive down. My wife is from
Miami so we can give you some insight into FL, the southern USA as well as
provide you a free bed for a night!

Cheers!

I agree with everything said in both of these posts, but would like to add one

Yes, quite definitely. I have been using sqlite2 for over a year. I can't say
that I have had any problems directly attributable to sqlite. I have read,
though, reports that sqlite3 is considerably slower than sqlite2 owing to a
change in the way that it handles transactions.

I see no problem with what you describe. I would recommend, only,
performing
more than one backup, or duplicating your tape(s) after the backup, so that
you have more than one copy of your files, possibly stored in different
locations.

It would seem to me that the principle advantage of using Bacula for
your
backup would be that you had a history of your backup(s) in the database for
future reference. If you purge the database, why go to all the bother of
setting up Bacula and, instead, just use tar or cpio to create your backup
tapes.

This might just work, with one minor addition. Since I have bacula disk
volumes, too, I decided to give it a quick try. I used bcopy to copy one disk
volume to another, new one. Then, I used bls to do a quick test of the
integrity of the new volume. It didn't work -- it kept complaining about the
volume label.

So, as another test, using bconsole, I used the label command to create a new
disk volume in the archive, as well as in the catalog. Then, I used the bcopy
program to copy an existing archive into the new volume and it seemed to
work. Now, bls would list all of the same files that were in the original
volume and displayed the new volume name.

The next step would be to use the bscan program to enter this data into the
catalog, but I don't seem to have a copy of bscan on my system. :(
