Check the list archives. This problem has been discussed a lot
recently. The short answer is you can not use the label command with
dvd media because it does not work. You must have the dvd autolabeled
for bacula to be able to use it.

Have you set up label format for the pool that you are using your dvd
disks with?

Here is what I have for my dvd pool:

Pool {
  Name = DVD-Pool
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = no # Bacula can automatically recycle Volumes
  AutoPrune = no# Prune expired volumes
  Accept Any Volume = yes # write on any volume in the pool
  Label Format = "DVD-"
}

I think a simple mount (in your bacula console) will work but I am not sure.

I have tested dvd writing several times in the past year or so but in
all cases I found it not working well enough for everyday use so I
gave up...

I have seen this recently. In my case the clientid that the database
listed for the job did not exist in the database so no jobs were found
for the client. To fix I manually added the correct clientid for all
jobs that I knew were for that client.

Re: [Bacula-users] Cleaning up bacula-dir.conf using includes

2006-08-02 Thread John Drescher
I do the same but seperate things a lot more I have the following:

bacula-dir-clients-linux.conf
bacula-dir-filesets-linux.conf
bacula-dir-jobdefs.conf
bacula-dir-schedules.conf
bacula-dir-clients-win.conf
bacula-dir-filesets-win.conf
bacula-dir-jobs.conf
bacula-dir-storage.conf
bacula-dir-clients.conf
bacula-dir-filesets.conf
bacula-dir-pools.conf
bacula-dir.conf

I too thought this may cause some probems when I started organizing
things but I have not had a single problem with it and I have
basically had this config for 3 to 6 months.

Re: [Bacula-users] [Bacula-devel] Bacula bets 1.39.18-20060804 released

2006-08-05 Thread John Drescher

On 8/5/06, Kern Sibbald <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hello,

We have released the first beta 1.39 beta code to Source Forge as a tar.gz
file as well as the Win32 binary installer.

I have attached two files bacula-1.39.18_beta20060804.ebuild which is
a bumped gentoo ebuild  and
bacula-1.39.18_beta20060804-default-configs.patch is a patch file for
the ebuild. The ebuild successfully installed and built the beta on
gentoo x86 with gcc-3.4.6.

Anyone who tries this ebuild you should backup your database and then
run /usr/libexec/bacula/update_bacula_tables possibly passing params
to specify the user that is permitted to update the database.

The source has already been released. Since this is a odd number I
believe all 1.39 releases will be beta only and you will have to wait
for 1.40 for an official release.

[Bacula-users] Fwd: can not write to DVD

2006-08-15 Thread John Drescher
-- Forwarded message --
From: John Drescher <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Aug 15, 2006 3:12 AM
Subject: Re: [Bacula-users] can not write to DVD
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What does your Storage section in your bacula-dir.conf file look like?

Here is mine:

# Definiton of dvd storage device
Storage {
  Name = JMD0-DVD
  Address = jmd0# N.B. Use a fully qualified name here
  SDPort = 9103
  Password = "DELETED#"
  Device = "DVD-WRITER"
  Media Type = DVD
}

Storage {
  Name = JMD1-DVD
  Address = jmd1# N.B. Use a fully qualified name here
  SDPort = 9103
  Password = "DELETED"
  Device = "JMD1-DVD-WRITER"
  Media Type = DVD
}

And then my jobs use JMD1-DVD to write to the dvd writer on jmd1 or
JMD0-DVD to write to the dvd on jmd0.

Niether mount or label work in the release version. This is being
fixed in the current cvs. To use dvd media with the current release
version 1.38.11 you must get autolabel to work and that will
automatically mount dvds during the labeling,

You have the latest version. There are several bugs with this version
listed on the bug page

I have made several patches to get it running but now I am using

Is this an LTO2 drive (with 200GB native) as you can not count on an
LTO1 drive giving you 200GB of space? LTO1 drives are really a 100GB
drive that with compression sometimes fits 200GB on a tape. For me I
rarely get 2:1 as I have uncompressible data on my disks (image files
that are already compressed).

I see. Running it this way would at least reduce the overhead of
running compression on the client which will take a lot of cpu cycles.

Please explain fully the problem you are having. Post an error message
if you have one. Saying that backing up to tape does not work is not
very helpful for us to understand the problem. Also please tell us
what version of bacula you are using and possibly how you have
configured your network.

After understanding the problem and need I think it is possible to use
a normal user as long as that user has full control set on every file
that will ever need backed up or restored. Personally, I would avoid
this solution (unless the files were generated by an automatic
process) as it almost certainly will lead to problems as files with
the wrong permissions will not be backed up.

Are you sure that the new database is indexed properly? Does it take
an unreasonably long time to generate the file list for a restore? If
so this is a sign that the database needs indexed.

Did you try mounting the filesystem on the lvm after this command? I am assuming that there was some type of error in the recording of the filesize (during the backup) as I know you did not backup a 0 byte file and then try to restore it!

Initially I used label barcodes command to label all 23 tapes in the autochanger a few weeks back and I have not written to this tape since. I had already soved this problem by using the delete volume command then unmount. Then the mtx command to physically mount the media in the first drive and finally a mount and bacula labeled  the tape. I guess I should have waited at least few minutes before implementing workarounds as I would have probably been able to figure out the cause of the problem.

The backup-server is also a Debian etch amd64 but with a 2.6.15.6kernel and an Athlon 64 3200+ CPU with 512 Mb mem. Both bacula-sd andbacula-dir is running on the backup-server, as well as a

compression making the backup much slower, even with unloaded CPU's?I've studied the network traffic pattern with ethereal during abackup, and the backup-server is responding directly at all time. Itis waiting for data from the fileserver. I've seen up to 400 ms
without a single packet from the fileserver and most of the packetssent from the fileserver to the backup-server is small.What can explain this? How can I debug/analyze this further. Whatshould I try?

this case. BUT we are not CPU-limited either (one CPU 100% idle duringbackup, the other mostly >90% in IO-wait). We should *only* be discIO-limited, and even the fastest case, local tar, is very slow. At
only 1162 kbyte/s (bacula-fd without SW-compression), theSW-compression should not slow down the backup more than a fewpercent. As a comparison, 'gzip -6' (as should be used according tothe manual) on this machine sustain ~18 Mbyte/s.
Also, why is bacula-fd without SW-compression much slower than tar?But, as you suggested, I should try the bacula-user mailinglist as this probably isn't debian-specific./ Anders

Peeking through the air holes in the front I saw that the tape was indeed in the drive but the robot was not attempting to unload it at all. After a power cycle of the autoloader the tape came out on the first try. To me this is an unacceptable behavior but at least there was a fix...

I believe I found the source for this problem. At one point during testing (trying to get as much performance as I could) I had the Maximum Block Size  and  Minimum Block Size set to 256K. And now this setting has been removed. Now because bacula uses a variable blocks instead of fixed blocks every tape that was labeled with this setting must be deleted and relabeled otherwise I get the same error.

Hi, I seem to be having problems with posting mail to the list with gmail recently as none of my messages I have recently sent are getting to the archives and I seem only to get only get a reply if I email someone directly. This is a little frustrating because I do respond to around 5 to 10 bacula threads a day.

Re: [Bacula-users] Way to label a range of tapes with barcodes

2006-10-20 Thread John Drescher
I know this is not what you asked for but I have found it best to create a Scratch pool and use label barcodes to put all tapes in the Scratch pool and then when needed bacula will grab the next tape from this pool and move them to the pool that needs a new volume. This way I do not have to worry at all about labeling tapes for each pool.

Is there a way in bacula to label a range of tapes with

I know you can issue a "label  barcodes" but
that will label all the tapes to one Pool.

2006-10-26 Thread John Drescher
I have seen this discussed in this list before and I believe there are several problems on top of the small chance that a file will have the same size and same md5sum but different contents. One is do we only search (for dups) in the current backup job or volume or do we include other backups and other volumes.  If  we inclulde other  backups  how do we handle  the case where  a file from job X is on a volume from job Y because of a duplicate and now some user has purged that volume that contains job Y.

On top of this there are many factors that make archiving this rate very difficult. It is very difficult for a gigabit network to sustain  60 to 80MB/s unless you are using jumbo frames or 2 computers directly connected to each other by a single cable. Then there is the filesystem performance.  The problem  here is that it is very difficult to archive  sustained transfers in this range even with raid because of fragmentation of the data. Even single drives do have STR rates in this range (60 to 80MB/s) but this is only if the operation is sequential and once the drive has to seek performance drops considerably.  Then there is the performance of the database.

Yes the icon is now gone because of a change in how microsoft handles

Did you create the bacula database? Did you verify from the shell that
bacula-dir started and was running. I would skip trying to get Webmin
working with bacula until you get bacula working from the shell /
bconsole.

I am not talking about installing MySql. I am talking about running
the bacula scripts to create the catalog database. I do not use your
distribution but for me I had to create the database using the
create_bacula_database script.

If you get no results start bacula from the shell with

bacula-dir -d 100 -c /etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf

That happens when bacula-dir is not running.

Not from a backup volume if that is what you are asking. Remember that
in bacula purging is all or none. You can either purge the entire
volume removing all jobs from that or use the copy jobs feature to
copy all jobs but the one with the sensitive data to a new volume.

5 is wrong in both cases. The tape does not get rewound after the
operation unless you have bacula ofline it or you are wrongly using
the rewinding device /dev/st0 instead of /dev/nst0.

I would expect bacula to do the first one always since that may be
needed for double reel tapes. For single reel tapes (DLT, LTO) the
tape is always at the beginning when you insert however no harm will
be done to rewind then.

Do you have a barcode reader on your archive? If you do make sure that
you used label barcodes to label your volumes and update slots after
every tape change so there is no tape searching. If you do not have a
barcode reader things are tougher and I can not help with that since
my changer experience is with a barcode reader..

Remember for these tapes (LTO,DLT) the drive itself contains the
second reel. So like Jeremy said to be able to eject the tape the
drive must rewind the tape.

If you want to put more than 1 catalog on a tape use a different pool
for each of the tapes and use the schedule resource to schedule both
pools every other day.

Please read the manual. All of this is in there including examples.

For you to backup more than the director machine you need to use an
external ip address instead of localhost or 127.0.0.1 for the SD
resource.

Remember that a job will not despool when it spools so that this will
not be as efficient as possible unless you run more than 1 job at a
time or have a spool size larger than your largest job. Since I use
concurrency I use a 5 or 10GB spool file like I have been doing for
over 5 years out of the 8+ years I have used bacula. On my LTO2
archive I regularly see despool rates of 20 to 60 MB/s to a single
LTO2 tape drive all the time however backup rates are highly dependent
of what type of backup and the percentage of small files. Incrementals
will show low rates because a large percentage of the time of the
backup is spent searching for the few files to backup instead of
actually doing the backup. A full will generally have a way higher
backup rate because all files are selected instead of spending time
searching. However with this said Incrementals are generally much
faster than fulls even though they show a much lower rate.

On top of this source filesystem performance and database performance
are very important. Also make sure you are not using software
compression if you have a tape drive. Software compression even on the
fastest i7 with an SSD will most likely be less than 10MB/s while tape
drive HW compression can easily achieve 10 times that rate.

I am not sure why you had these ridiculous file and job retentions however
neither of them will stop a volume from being recycled. These two are more
about how long to keep the records in the database.

Get rid of the Maximum Volume Bytes. 800 GB is not the limit for LTO3.
Remember 800GB is just the inflated manufacturer expected capacity
when in reality you may fit 400GB on a single tape or 3TB depending on
how compressible your data set is.

> But no matter which tape we use, after 240 - 250 GB of data Bacula want's us

First of all bacula does not understand or care about how much data a
tape technology is supposed to hold. It makes no difference to bacula
if you are using DLT, DDS, LTO ... they are all handled the same. If
you do not impose a limit on how many bytes that bacula can write to a
tape bacula will write as many bytes as it can up until it hits the
first tape write error. At this point bacula assumes the tape is full.
Check your dmesg to see if there are any problems. Also try a brand
new LTO3 tape.

Yes the jobs fail after a few minutes (30 minutes?). Other jobs run
concurrently so it really does not slow down the process that much.

What exactly is the problem? I have way more than 20 clients but I
instead use a 10GB spool file and allow 5+ clients to backup at the
same time. Individual rates are not great but with spooling the tape
drives are usually busy.

Would it be too inconvenient to run the database backup as a separate job?

I let the database grow. My postgresql db is around 30GB but it sits
on its own filesystem on a raid that has 300 GB so there is lots of
space to grow..

Do you have "Maximum Concurrent Jobs" set in the Director and storage
sections in bacula-dir.conf?

Only 1 volume and thus pool can be loaded in a storage device at a
time so if you have several pools that you want to run backups on you
need more than 1 storage device. For disk based backups, I highly
recommend using the bacula virtual autochanger.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vchanger/

This will greatly simplify the setup of multiple pools, devices and
concurrency. Just send all jobs to the virtual autochanger resource
and let bacula handle the devices.

Software compression is a very heavy CPU usage process on the FD and
will certainly slow down your backups.

Yes it has a small configuration file. And probably 10 to 20
additional configuration lines in your bacula-sd.conf
For me it was like 30 minutes to read the vchanger documentation and
to implement then just let it do its work. This in my opinion is much
easier than creating a separate storage device for each pool or
juggling storage devices to obtain concurrency.

Then you need do some debugging to track down the bottleneck. It can
also be the database or a number of other reasons. Also are you
talking about Full backups? I ask that because usually Incrementals
and Differentials spend more time looking for files then actually
backing up data so these tend to have low rates however since they
only backup a fraction of the Full backup they still finish much
faster.

Yes but you need 4GB disk volumes.

When bacula does not find a volume it will ask you to mount it. At
that time you will have to copy the volume to the disk.

Reinstalling will put back the base configuration files which may be a
start but you would still have to reconstruct your settings yourself.

If you know you have backups of your /etc/bacula folder you should be
able to use the bls and bextract programs to get your files back.
