Re: Why BBE pisses me off

2011-08-21 Thread Jon
Firstly, thanks to the people who are helpful and make this forum a
nice place to visit.

Since joining this group, I have been amazed at the overall negativity
and whining of this user base, but this thread takes the cake. I used
to be a TextMate user but finally accepted that its continued
development is essentially abandoned for the time being. Just look at
the list of updates for BBEdit 10 (http://www.barebones.com/support/
bbedit/arch_bbedit10.html) and even the updates for 10.0.1 (http://
www.barebones.com/support/bbedit/arch_bbedit1001.html). It takes a
team of developers committed to delivering a quality product to do
that. They even provide a phone number to contact them.

TextMate is pretty much abandoned (and TextMate 2 is vapourware) yet
they have a thriving community of people helping each other (through
threads exactly like this one) to solve their programming programs
(which is what programmers do, they solve problems) and here we have
constant complaining because a particular hotkey didn't bind properly
or the GUI you rely on to edit an image tag is slightly different.
Such beefs are fine, but send you email to support, that has been
repeated over and over and over.

Lash back however you want, but THIS IS A FORUM FOR BBEDIT USERS WHO
LIKE AND ENJOY USING BBEDIT and a place to discuss their common
programming problems, share clippings or even a humorous anecdote. If
that is not you, contact support and let the rest of us enjoy our text
editor of choice.

When you purchase a license you are entitled to certain rights for the
current version. Nobody owes you anything because something works
differently than how you think it should work. Thats what the trial is
for, not to mention its 378 page manual. Do you think they just made
things up to put in there? That alone is a testament to the power and
history of this product so if you don't like it go back to emacs or
Vim (let's see you get them to do what you want).

Possible bug in com.barebones.bbedit ProjectsOpenItemsOnSingleClick

2011-08-21 Thread Alex Popescu
As instructed in my first post to the group, I've spent some time
reading through the BBEdit help and manual. One setting that I was
interested in com.barebones.bbedit ProjectsOpenItemsOnSingleClick
doesn't seem to work correctly in BBEdit 10.0.1

What I did:

defaults write com.barebones.bbedit ProjectsOpenItemsOnSingleClick -
bool NO

Expected behavior:

- when navigating the project view using either arrow keys or the
mouse, file should not open in the editor

Real behavior:

- for both arrow keys and single mouse clicks files are still opened
in the editor

I think one problem has been the incessant trumpeting on arrival of BBEdit 10.
Has it raised unrealistic expectations? It's only a text editor for heavens
sake. I think we need to maintain a sense of proportion.

Clarifications about Sharing Application Support Preferences Data via Dropbox

2011-08-21 Thread Alex Popescu
Hi,

Could anyone clarify the second part of the Sharing Application
Support Preferences Data via Dropbox:

* Locate your BBEdit preference data folder (either ~/Library/BBEdit/
or ~/Library/Preferences/com.barebones.bbedit.PreferenceData/)

I do have a ~/Library/BBEdit/ folder

• Rename your BBEdit preference data folder from “BBEdit” (or
“com.barebones.bbedit.PreferenceData”) to “PreferenceData”.

I can do this

• Move the renamed preference data folder into ~/Dropbox/Application
Support/BBEdit/, and rename it

This last part is confusing. The way I read it is that ~/Library/
BBEdit/ folder previously renamed to ~/Library/PreferenceData should
be under ~/Dropbox/Application Support/BBEdit/. But what should it be
renamed to?

Hey Bill,

It would seem that Bare Bones has attempted to add some of this functionality
with 'File' -- 'Open File by Name', but it does not match the usability and
user-friendliness of something like PeepOpen.

There seems to be a bug with 'Open File by Name' in that it does not show up in

this I'd appreciate it.

Does anyone know if the BBEdit folks have considered or are considering this

I suggest you make your case to: Bare Bones Software supp...@barebones.com

The more people who jump on that bandwagon the more likely we'll see a feature.

FWIW I just bought PeepOpen and for $12.00 US consider it a bargain.

The BBEdit plugin does NOT work with BBEdit 10 and Lion, but it's just an
Applescript and will be easy to fix. (Working on it now.)

PeepOpen is useful, is in active development, and will provide a unified
interface for several editors I use.

I also get the functionality NOW.

My one gripe is that it's a bit of a memory hog.

Re: Clarifications about Sharing Application Support Preferences Data via Dropbox

2011-08-21 Thread Bucky Junior
Not something I've tried but I specifically recall reference to having to
create a Library named file in the Dropbox folder. So, the Dropbox path
should be something like:
~/Dropbox/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/

I've read the Read Me.txt file, but I couldn't find a clear reference
 to this question.

The documentation doesn't mention anywhere creating a Library folder
in Dropbox, but an Application Support. I've already made this change
and it seems to work OK (I don't see BBEdit recreating the original ~/
Library/Application Support/BBEdit)

That would not be correct. If your Dropbox is in your home
directory, then create an Application Support folder and drag
the BBEdit folder from ~/Library/Application Support/ INTO the
folder in your Dropbox, thus: ~/Dropbox/Application Support/BBEdit/.

Re: Epub Epub Epub

2011-08-21 Thread HarlyQuinn
No DRM applied.

Changed the Content.opf file -- one word in the contents
That broke it

So I tried changing a simple word in Chapter One.xhtml
same problem

I notice that on opf, ncx and css files line returns are Unix UTF-8
on all xhtml files code is classic mac UTF-8

All recognized as XML

I make this same change in Oxygen no problems
files are made from Adobe InDesign cs4 on a mac

Was the epub protected by DRM?

 What changes did you make?

FWIW I just bought PeepOpen and for $12.00 US consider it a bargain.

The BBEdit plugin does NOT work with BBEdit 10 and Lion, but it's just an
Applescript and will be easy to fix. (Working on it now.)

I don't want to sound picky but how can it be a bargain if it doesn't
even work?

Leaving it aside for a second, I'd say that such functionality should
exist in BBEdit by default and users ahouldn't have to spend money on
a 3rd party tool whose compatibility is not guaranteed.

I'm planning to take Open file by name for an extensive test and see
how it behaves compared with other similar functionality in other text
editors/IDEs.

PeepOpen is useful, is in active development, and will provide a unified
interface for several editors I use.

I also get the functionality NOW.

My one gripe is that it's a bit of a memory hog.

I didn't say PeepOpen didn't work. I said the plugin for BBEdit doesn't work
with BBEdit 10 on Lion. I also said it's a minor fix.

What functionality *should* be in an application is up to its developers, and
in my previous post I said:

I suggest you make your case to: Bare Bones Software supp...@barebones.com

The more people who jump on that bandwagon the more likely we'll see a
 feature.
