Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] DLNA Problem - Getting Flac files converted and sent as PCM /WAV files for DLNA item

LMS should already transcode FLAC to PCM for DLNA clients, no extra work
required... I know it works for my PS3.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Implement SPDY into LMS?

2012-04-29 Thread andyg

We are big fans of SPDY and have thought about upgrading some of our
protocols to use it in the future. We see it more from the perspective
of helping MySB handle an increasing number of persistent connections,
but it would also be useful for LMS too.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] DLNA and transcoding

2012-04-19 Thread andyg

To transcode files via download, you just construct a URL like
/music/$id/download.mp3?bitrate=320

The extension provided after "download" determines the desired format,
and the bitrate param is valid for MP3 (a quality param is also
supported). Obviously you will need LAME installed.

I can assure you that Logitech is supporting Squeezebox more than ever,
and we are working on several things behind the scenes. For example, we
have some large projects in the works to scale up MySB that will not be
visible to users (unless we screw it up :)

Hmm, can you do some additional tests with AIFF files? Convert a WAV to
AIFF (should be fairly easy) and see if that works. Also test FLAC and
ALAC if you can.

You can also set the network.http logging option to DEBUG mode which
will log the transcoding command being used (along with a ton of other
stuff).

I tend to throw out the "patches welcome" response especially when

Well, there is absolutely no Squeezebox integration with Revue and none
was ever really planned once we found out Android can't really support
decent audio playback. The plan to turn SBS into LMS came about for a
couple of reasons: I figured we could get the time to provide a decent
DLNA server (a long-requested feature), and part of the reason was also
the hope that it could help keep the server alive & supported if
necessary by working with another higher-profile Logitech product.
Ironically, now the Squeezebox seems more popular within Logitech than
the Revue, but it sure didn't look this way a year ago.

Anyway, yes, video and image support kinda sucks but we tried hard not
to break the Squeezebox or music experience. I have a lot of ideas to
make it better but like everything there just isn't enough time or
resources.

Yes there are bugs but I would disagree that it's being "rushed" out
the door. We've gone through 6 release candidates and had an extra
month due to Revue update delays, this is a lot better than our typical
releases.

It's supported for Ogg and MPC (these were already supported, the only
addition was FLAC). I believe the other decoders such as faad and
wvunpack don't have support for outputting big-endian raw data.

I would guess that AIFF is given precedence because the ip3k CPU is
natively big-endian, and so it results in some smaller amount of
processing needed during playback.

It's been fixed. AIFF (big-endian) transcoding is needed for DLNA. SBs

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] LMS video/picture scanning performance ?

2011-09-27 Thread andyg

If you guys want to do some experimenting, you can comment out the
various thumbnail options that are created for every image/video. This
is probably the source of most of the slowdown. I think I mentioned
this before, but right now each thumbnail is generated from the
full-res source. Music thumbnails are optimized and are generated from
the next-highest thumbnail size. This will be coming to image/video
thumbs too but I ran out of time.

is not always available
* Bug 17594 - Web settings typo fix

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] LMS video/picture scanning performance ?

2011-09-25 Thread andyg

Yeah, scanning performance has a lot of room for improvement. Images are
slow because the current way thumbnails are being generated is not the
fastest (always resizing from the original instead of the previous
thumbnail). Same issue with video, although the original is usually
much smaller than a multi-MP JPEG. Also for video we are limited by
ffmpeg performance.

Yeah, so SP firmware will be upgraded. There is no new ip3k firmware.

Changed file detection uses the modification time as well as the file
size to detect changes. A lot of the time, minor tag changes will not
alter the file size, so in this case there is no way to know that the
file has changed.

I certainly hope our QA gets their act together too, but I'm going
under the assumption we will not have any additional Logitech QA.

Unfortunately the Oct 3 date is tied to a certain other Logitech
software release, maybe you can guess which one... if it gets delayed
we can also delay.

Thanks. It would be good to try to find out if that's a Samsung issue or
our issue. If you can, you could try another server like Windows Media,
Twonky, etc and see if it works better with those.

I spent almost all last week in the DLNA specs and official test suite
and I think it's pretty "conformant" now, although like anything, we'll
probably have to put in loads of client-specific workarounds.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] LMS 7.7: Does it transcode?

2011-09-12 Thread andyg

I fixed the PCM issue, it was streaming in little-endian instead of
big.

DLNA will probably never officially support FLAC because it's
open-source, although they have recently added Matroska support, so who
knows. It will depend if any big players get behind it I think. But this
is mostly not a big deal, you can still stream FLAC to something like
the Oppo since it will recognize the content-type.

And yes Revue will eventually support FLAC.

The DLNA specs completely ignore all open codecs like FLAC and Vorbis,
so no surprise there. If you want support for these in a DLNA client
you will have to try something more geeky like an Oppo Blu-ray player.
MP3 is required for all clients though.

Yeah, don't worry about Revue testing, that's being handled by Logitech
QA. I would suggest you guys focus on other things, especially Xbox/PS3
which I don't have.

I'm going to work on these issues next week, such as adding some of the
missing DLNA stuff, and testing with various other clients.

I should say that yes, 7.6/trunk will still get bug fixes and they will
roll up to 7.7 as usual. I just wanted to update everyone on the status
of 7.7 with this post.

not aware of any really serious bug fixes in 7.6.2 yet.

[SlimDevices: Beta] 7.7 build updates & schedule news

2011-08-26 Thread andyg

7.7 builds are now available for all the standard platforms.

The Windows builds are now built using ActivePerl 5.14.1.

http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.7

Various modules have been updated to newer versions on all platforms so
that we could use the core 5.14 module versions on Windows. If you
provide a 3rd-party distribution you will need to look at updating the
following modules. The below list is likely to be stable through 7.7
release. Media::Scan 0.01 is still in development but will need to be
included with any 7.7 3rd-party package as well. Be aware that it can
be tricky to build and has a lot of dependencies. As always please
refer to the buildme.sh script for details.

7.7 release is currently tentatively scheduled for late September/early
October with RC1 planned for mid-September.

Code:

  Compress::Raw::Zlib 2.033
  Digest::SHA1 2.13
  HTML::Parser 3.68
  Image::Scale 0.08
  Sub::Name 0.05
  XML::Parser 2.41
  YAML::LibYAML 0.35 (this replaces YAML::Syck)

It's a specific trunk revision, not a branch. You can test on trunk if
you want, you can also use "svn up -r33094" to get the same rev.

[SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6.1 RC in the morning

2011-08-14 Thread andyg

I just fixed my last targeted 7.6.1 bug. I will put out another
announcement for the official RC build tomorrow morning, but if you
want to get a head start, please give 33079 a try. Michael may have
some other minor fixes to make so the RC may be a newer version than
this.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] SQLite WAL in 7.6.1 - please test

The shm/wal files don't stay around unless you've force-killed the
server or it crashed. You can just delete them.

3rd party plugins should never care what the database filenames are.
