If you need some for actual use, please let me know the exact model you want

A treasure trove in Dallas

2017-04-21 Thread Electronics Plus via cctalk
If you live in the DFW area, and have a truck and a strong back, there are
some VERY interesting items.

A DEC cabinet taller than I am, with a front panel of switches. I asked him
if the panel was rust or orange, but he said he thought it was dark, like
brown. The cabinet was backwards, and there was too much stuff in the way to
turn it around.

3 Sun cabinets full of stuff, and a SparcStation 20.

Several (at least 4) IBM server cabinets. Not the blue 6 foot kind; these
are abt waist high.

A cabinet about waist high the said Computer Control (I think) with switches
and LEDs. Too heavy to move into the light to take pics.

A complete Data Products B300 line printer.

If you are interested in these, send me an email, and I will give you the
contact info.

The warehouse is very dirty, and the aisles are very small. A large person
will not fit.

the trouble is, there are from security classes that were taught by private

RE: AIX documentation

2017-03-13 Thread Electronics Plus via cctalk
Well, I look at it this way. I have old copies of OS that have been opened
and prob registered somewhere, like old Sun and Solaris. Even Microsoft
stuff was never a problem, although I would not go so far as to pull license
stickers off recycled computers. Never got in trouble for selling those. So
I doubt there will be a problem over these, since they do not deal
specifically with security or anything. A 26 year old manual is not going to
excite anyone too much.

and a lot of the older stuff they no longer support got culled, but they are
willing to look for boards, drives, or whatever would help the collectors
get their machines up and running again. I described the documentation set
to them, and they will look for it. Any parts you want, send me a list, and
they will hunt for me.

I have the keyboard for a UTS-40 here.
If you get a terminal that has been shipped, BEFORE you plug it in, take off
the back cover and examine the connectors.
These are not screwed together in the back; the circuit boards just press
together and will come apart at the back corner if the monitor flexes at
all.

Do you want complete terminals and keyboards? The reason they like the
keyboards is because of the feel of the typing. Sometimes they come with the
monitors, and they have no use for them, so they get dumpstered. If you look on

I had a similar problem with an old VCR remote control. The problem seemed
to be that the bumps on the back of the keys lost their conductivity (and
cleaning them made them worse).

My solution was to glue pieces of aluminium foil to the back of the keys.
It was tedious but it seemed to sort it out.

Ugh. Don't get me started. I collect terminals. Missing keyboards is a
perennial problem, but it's gotten WAY worse in recent years. I have two
terminals here that are missing the keyboards because some "enthusiast" bought
them out from under me during an eBay transaction.

So, now I have an Infoton and an IBM 3101 here that are completely worthless
because the keyboards are missing.

And I have no hope of ever finding replacements - especially for the IBM 3101,
because that's one of the ones the keyboard jerks really seem to love because
it's the older beam spring kind.

Grr.

I went a little crazy and started doing the same in 2017 to dump the firmware
for MAME. There are now several working there because of that.

I ended up scrapping most of them in the fall because they were taking up too
much space, and there was no chance of ever finding keyboards for them (esp the
Qume ones).

I bought some Wyse kbs thinking I'd make a converter box, but then just decided
what's the point.

Televideo keyboards

I am clearing these out of my stock:

4 are beige, with no PN on the back. They have a small RJ9 type connector. 3
are missing one or more caps.

4 are dark on top, and beige on the back. There is no PN. These have the

These have not been tested or cleaned. I would love ro send all 8 of these

Using M122 keyboards on a PC

2018-08-23 Thread Electronics Plus via cctalk
Orihalcon sells nifty Soarers converter cables that let you use most
terminal keyboards on a PC. But please be aware that ONLY the keys found on
a normal PC keyboard will work! You can do some remapping, but F13-F24 will
not be available, and some keys will not operate the same as they did on the
original keyboard. I have used these to test Wyse (with removable cables),
IBM, and a bunch of AT and XT keyboards. They do not work for ADDS
keyboards.

Just talked to Lidan at Continental Computers. They did not realize the website

You can call him directly at 310-906-3553, or email li...@conticomp.com

They killed the pallet of Sun pizza boxes, but the other machines they parted
out and put the parts in stock.

They do have some old DEC stuff; he will check for anything PDP related.

They do not have any VT100 stuff left, nor any terminals below a VT320.

He will also look for HP 1000 type boxes, and hdd and tape drives to match.

RE: Sperry Univac UTS-40 Terminal doc anyone?

2018-03-17 Thread Electronics Plus via cctalk
I had a number of these. The construction seemed to be surprisingly flimsy.
If you removed the top cover, check the back corner where all the cards
interface together. These often work loose, making the terminal useless.
Gently but firmly re-align everything and push it all back together. Then
plug it in and turn it on. Without the keyboard, you will get errors.

I am the temporary caretaker of a Sperry UTS-40 "intelligent" terminal (very
green screen, Z-80 based terminal from the late 70's or early 80's) which I
grabbed on eBait for sending parts to Dominique Carlier over in Belgium. The
CRT, power supply and character generator seem to work (gives a very sharp
semi-random geometric display on power-on, sometimes with a few nicely drawn
characters interspersed), but the darn thing does not seem to boot on reset.
The picture goes away and weird sound is emitted from the speaker after a
long beep-of-death. I was wondering if anyone had service documentation. Or
a dump of the firmware. Al, anything that crossed your desk?

There are activation codes for SOME of the software on the CDs, but not most of

Memory
User-installable RAM boards provide the 425 with RAM in increments of 8, 16
and 32 Mbyte blocks. They have an Error Checking and Correcting (ECC)
ability. Standard RAM is 8 Mbytes, expandable to 64 Mbytes for the 425t and
16 Mbytes expandable to 128 Mbytes for the 425s.
RAM boards are used in pairs. There are eight sockets on the system board for
four board pairs. RAM Upgrades are available as follows:
two 4 Mbyte boards that add an 8 Mbyte block of memory.
two 8 Mbyte boards that add a 16 Mbyte block of memory.
two 16 Mbyte RAM boards that add a 32 Mbyte block of memory (for 425s
only)
For example, to obtain the maximum 64 Mbyte of RAM for the 425t would
require four 16 Mbyte RAM Board pairs ( i.e. eight 8 Mbyte boards) inserted
in the eight sockets.

I think changing the bus would alter things enough to be a problem. Can
games expecting an 8 / 16 bit ISA SoundBlaster work with a PCI

--

In my experience, games written for CGA and 80286 do not do well on modern
equipment. You CAN play them, but they are really slow. The video and sound
still work on a Pentium III with PCI audio and PCI or AGP video, as long as you
still load DOS and/or Win 3.1. Anything higher than a PIII seems to be
difficult to find drivers to make the basics of the motherboard work under the
old OS. World of Warcraft in our household went from a 386 to a PIII, and then
got set aside as we kept upgrading computers.

Subject: looking for out-of-print computer book

Hi folks,

I am trying to find an out-of-print tech book for a research project I'm
doing. The book is called Porting Macintosh Applications to Windows 95 and
NT by Greg Stone, dated December 1996, ISBN 0471118516, published by Wiley.

It's listed on Amazon but not available; I've searched on
usedbooksearch.net and even WorldCat, with no
luck. Wondering if anyone has any ideas how I could find a copy?

Figure someone on this list could point me in the right direction. Would
love any help.

Thanks,

*   Bill.

2019-01-22 Thread Electronics Plus via cctalk

I agree that the general introductory blast post was a bit over the top. But I
don't think it's been posted here regularly, and vendors that obviously
contribute here get a little leeway (Cindy). I figure some may not be familiar
with Cypress/Dougherty systems so one intro email per six months or year
doesn't bug me. More often will draw some ire ;) If Dougherty Systems wants to
participate in this mailing list, there needs to be some 'collector friendly'
value, it's a two way street. I suggest that Jeff @ Cypress scan maybe a year
of past postings by Cindy @ Electronics Plus, and emulate.

J

Wow! I feel honored! Jesse at Cypress is actually not a bad guy. Been around a
long time, but you are right, they ARE high dollar.

I am SO sorry that I could not help more at the Houston haul. I have severe
asthma, and it got out of control, so I had to leave. The guy has a TON
(literally) of vintage stuff, but he is an ebay guy, and is not willing to part
with stuff cheap. One guy drove 15 hours to get there, and did not take home
what he wanted, because the guy would not budge on prices.

If you want the seller's cell phone to try and make decent offers for some of
the stuff in pictures, send me an email. He charged me $400 for 1 Mac 512K, 4
TI/99, and a few old TRS 80 CoCo type systems. I am not going back again, sorry.

I may be odd, but I'd be interested in Cindy / Electronics Plus
leveraging their existing mailing list.

Assuming that it's Mailman (I don't remember) I'd be curious to see
categories that are brand names, and possibly sub-categories that are
model lines.

That way people could subscribe to the list and pick the categories they
are interested in receiving announcements to.

I think it would also give Cindy / Electronics Plus some indication of
what brand / model like people are interested in.

Just a thought. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Public buy/sell/trade

2018-12-21 Thread Electronics Plus via cctalk
For months I have been trying to implement a "multi-vendor marketplace".
Without a budget, it is almost impossible. There is a free software,
Sellacious, which runs off Joomla. Out of the box, it does not work. It has
MAJOR security holes. However, it was the ONLY one I could find where more than
one seller could sell the same product. Suppose 5 people have 1391401
keyboards. In almost every other system, you would have 5 separate listings. I
wanted something more like Amazon, where the item is listed ONCE, and then each
seller can set his price and a description of the condition, etc.

I am most familiar with Magento, which is what I use. There is a multi-vendor
add-on available, but the base package is $399, and then you go up from there
with features, like each seller being able to input his own shipping
methods/rates and payment methods.

Deskthority donated the space for such a market, and offered to host it, but no
one has the time to update/maintain it. If it were Magento, I would do it, but
I don't have $400+ to invest in the extra software (basic Magento CE is free).

If someone wants to donate the funds, or write a good working module for
Magento multi-vendor, I will be happy to set it up an maintain it.

The advantages to Magento are many, but it has a few drawbacks too. You can do
almost anything with it, but it can be a little slow. The community is very
active.

There are numerous tiny sites for buying and selling that are not very active
anymore, and most use a PHP BB type system, which will not let you list and buy
like a true ecommerce does. It also does not tell you when something is out of
stock, or allow you to add it to a wishlist.

Is there really a dearth of satisfactory locations for people to swap /
trade / buy / sell computer equipment?

I've not seriously looked. But I feel like this should have been solved
already. Maybe it has an the typical places are running people off or
otherwise unappealing.

What would people want in such a swap-n-shop?

In some ways it's a basic inventory management system, with the ability
for people to add their own listings.

I feel like the community could likely benefit from an associated forum
to discuss things without bogging down the business transactions.

I would want it easy to search and find things, or possibly even
register as being interested in being notified when someone lists
something for sale in the future.

I am somewhat surprised to learn that any commercially available general
purpose computer had an 8186 CPU. I've only seen it in purpose built
equipment. The last one I saw was in a mobile X-Ray or CT machine in
the late '90s.

I would love some confirmation on the CPU. (I'll look it up in a bit.)

That would mean that IBM PS/2s had every major class of x86 CPU between
the 8086 (or was it 8088, which is still in the 8x86 family) and the
Pentium.

IMHO that's impressive.

Jesse and the ebay mess

2019-01-24 Thread Electronics Plus via cctalk
I just got off the phone with Jesse at Cypress. He said he did not post the
gold and tantalum items on ebay. It is someone else, trying to cast a bad
name on him.

I explained to him that the list would really like to work with him, and
that old HP stuff is wanted. He explained that each item is put into a
system, fully tested, and has warranty and follow up support if needed, so
prices are not low. I explained to him that many list members can do board
level repairs.

I suggested a "garage sale" type scenario, where he offers as-is equip, to
save the costs of paying a tech to test everything. He is open to that idea.
He has pallets of old terminals and keyboards that he does not work on
anymore, so no warranty. I told him that if he would test the monitor to
make sure it turns on, and include a complete matching keyboard, members
would prob pay about $85 plus shipping for a set. He does have a 150, and a
lot of 1970s and 80s terminals and keyboards. He said he will gather them
together and do a basic test and offer some out, on an as-is basis.

Please understand that he is a business (for the past 30 years), and he does
have to cover costs of storage, technicians, etc. No, he won't sell stuff
for $5. It costs him more than that to pay someone to find the stuff and
pack it. Please bear his needs in mind too.

The 2 sheds will be sorted next Saturday morning, early, in Katy, TX. If you
want the address, pls email me.

If you are in the Austin, TX area, there might be room in a carpool.

Same for the Minneapolis and Michigan areas.

If you are coming, please wear sturdy boots, gloves, bring bottled water,
and dress in layers, as it might be either 35F or 75F that day. Bring your
own food. Bring cash, no checks or cc. Not sure about restroom facilities.

Sorry, but this doesn't really check out. Jesse sent an email to the list,
original subject 'Hewlett-Packard 3000, 9000, Itanium (HP-UX & MPE/iX)
Servers, Storage Arrays, Replacement Parts, Maintenance, & Disaster
back-ups' and put his email and website in the message. Going to that
website, cypress-tech.com, we can go to the 'ebay store' page where the
apparently official ebay store of Cypress Tech is linked to. Following the
link, http://stores.ebay.com/Cypress-Technology-Inc we see that this is the
same seller as the original gold scrap ebay link,
https://www.ebay.com/itm/382505855460

Here is the list of reasonable possibilities that I can think of:

- Somebody sent a fake email, from a fake Cypress-Tech.com, and made a fake
ebay page with the sole purpose of defaming this person (I'll admit, not
entirely out of the realm of possibility if there were someone with a
grudge against him)

- Jesse does not maintain full exclusive control over the ebay store, and
one of his coworkers/employees have posted the gold scrap auctions without
his knowledge (I suppose this is possible)

- You've been lied to, or otherwise you made a mistake

Please correct me if I've made an error somewhere, and please don't take
this as a personal attack of any kind. I don't have any interest in this
matter really, but my BS detector was showing a reading, so I checked it
out a little deeper and that's what I found.

Best Regards,
Joe Zatarski

Subject: DECserver 700 PSU fix, H7881-AA

Hi folks,

My trusty DECserver has bitten the dust in a silent and non-violent way
with the fuse still intact so has anyone got tips on troubleshooting? I
know it's the PSU because I 'borrowed' another PSU from work and the unit
is running again. It's an ASTEC unit under the hood, and in my experience
of fixing the older types like the AC8151 (Memotech, TRS80 II/III, Osborne
etc) the chief culprits on an utterly dead PSU are the input caps and/or
the small 220uF or 330uF startup cap in the feedback circuit.

I haven't checked bitsavers etc for a schematic yet, does such a thing
exist?
Hopefully the ASTEC board has a model number on it.

Cheers
