Criag, in my opinion you should be able to get a decent one for $100-150 although most stuf is generally overpriced at Carlisle. I dunno about others here, but I've found trying to double-flare steel brake lines a real BEAR! I never can seem to get the clamp to hold the line tight to do the second flare. [Chevelle-List] how safe is it to flare your own brake lines
Hello, Thanks to all who have helped me in my quest to rebuild my rear end. I am now wanting to replace the brake lines, and have borrowed a double flare tool, but am concerned about how safe this is. Would it be better to just buy some line that is close in length to the originals, and put a couple extra bends in it to take up any excess length? This way I wouldn't have to flare the line because it comes already done. I prefer to cut it to exact length, but I want the car to be safe. I'm not Jeff, but The pass side can be put in with the engine in place. Jack up the car, put in from the bottom. It's tight, but it'll go. I just did it yesterday. Um Craig. If this is the part I THINK you are talking about ……If you find one, please let me know! I don’t think ANYONE is making them …..yet. If I knew how to make them I could make a fortune! I think you can get them for almost every year Chevelle BUT a 69! Of course, I wouldn’t make them out of the cheap plastic they were originally made of. Not sure what would work though. You plan on putting in a stock radio? Maybe a CD Player molding plate would cover it? I have the same situation ….would love to ring the guy’s neck that cut it for a cheap stereo that was taken out long ago. But, who knew it would be a classic? [Chevelle-List] Big Fun
I finally finished the Chevelle Hotel: well not really, but have doors and locks in place and most of the wiring done. The "Hotel" is a 28' X 36' Pole barn with 12' ceilings and 3 10' X 10' doors. Moved my '69 over a couple of weeks ago and she was running rough. Friday nite I fed her a whole can of carb cleaner and let her stall out and sit overnight. Sat, I decided to change spark plugs and BOY what a difference it made! Now, I don't want to speak ill of anyone, so all I can say about the woman across the street is that she can catch a Frisbee in her mouth with all her paws on the ground! Anyways, last night I noticed that she was gone, and since I had a six-pack or 3 in me, I decided to fire up the Chevelle and take her for a spin. Backed up to the end of the street and let her rip. BIG FUN. Now, I don't have any exhaust pipes and the 20 year old headers are rotted out, so you can imagine the sound of an open 396 cutting lose. Loud and, like I said BIG FUN. We live on a cul-da-sac and last fall, the Commonwealth laid down some tar and pea gravel. I didn't do any measuring, but you could sure see where I shifted gears and where the posi kicked in with second gear. It started getting a little squirrelly about half way through second and I was running out of road quick so I backed off, but, like I said before, BIG FUN. I'm motivated to finish what I can afford so I can tool around a little bit on Sat nite.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Bumpers
I put a repro back bumper on my '66. I assume it was from Goodmark, altho the cardboard wrapping was not labeled. All the other metal - fenders, hoods, etc - that this vendor hawks at the shows is Goodmark. I am very happy with the fit & finish & quality of this bumper. But as I have said several times before, I got to look at it before buying. I bought a front bumper from the same vendor late this past Fall. Once again, it looks great, but it is not on yet (it snowed a little again last nite - will Spring ever get here?). I will comment on the fit once I get it installed. I bopught them both from D & R Classic Automotive, Warrenville, IL 800-472-6952. A phone call might reveal whether these are Goodmarks or something else. Re: [Chevelle-List] Bel Air
I must say I dont like the car either. Its like Chevrolet is trying to do what Ford did with the ThunderBird. Great idea, but there just isnt enough of a smiliarity in body design to say a new BelAir. The headlights and tailights resemble the 55-57 BelAir a bit, but as for the rest of the car, thats a no. Easiest way to identify a 55-57 would probably have to be the side moldings, so Chevrolet should of done a redesigned design of those side moldings. And the blinkers should of been just like one of the tri-5's to really give it that BelAir look Just my opinion. Tim King 1966 Chevelle 454 Big Block

How many toys can you afford to keep? Is storage a problem? How much restoration will the malibu need? Would you be happy using it as a driver? No creature comforts, etc. If it is original drive train, i wouldn't do much. Unmolested cars of any type are getting harder to find and will get a premium over modified. Whatever you do, keep the original parts in case you want to restore to original. I'll withhold a judgement til i see it in person. I like some of the shoebox styling cues, but overall it doesn't come together for me. Hopefully it will appeal if I see it in person. I feel the same way about the SSR. It has some appeal but I need to see it. Hopefully both are slated for mass production, rather than being limited production traffic builders for the dealers. RE: [Chevelle-List] Spring Clean ups and 67 Malibu=sell or not ?
I agree that if the car is in relatively good shape, keep it if at all possible for a daily driver. I'd opt for a GM crate motor (350/330) and the TH350 for a driver. Values go up and down over time. I bought my first '67 SS when it was 6 months old for payments. Originally it cost around $3300 and less $600 or so already paid, about $2700 was my cost. Sold it a few years later for $1500. My current '67 I tried selling about 8 years ago and couldn't get $7500 for it. Going through a divorce at the time and needed the money. Now you're lucky to find a drivable SS car for that amount. Luckily I didn't sell the car and got back on my feet and redid it. RE: [Chevelle-List] Spring Clean ups and 67 Malibu=sell or not ?
Sounds like a good daily driver to me if the body is in good shape! If it was also to be a highway cruiser I might consider putting some variety of Overdrive transmission in it. You could also just put a tall gear in the rear end to keep the revs down at 70+MPH (both for fuel economy and for your ears). In terms of value I think it depends on what kind of time period we’re talking about. I don’t think the car will appreciate in the near future very much. Any classic car kept in good shape (little rust) **SHOULD** appreciate say in the next 50 years. That’s my opinion but I obviously have no facts to back this up. I also think that by putting a 383 (or any small block for that matter) and a good slushbox in it will certainly not reduce the cars value.
