Re: [Chevelle-list] 1968 SS El Camino
I saw the but became a little disappointed, then a little confused, was that a < than less than grin or a < greater than grin..RLMAO...Just the fact so many people responded positively and with the back and forth made me laugh and smile...what more can you ask for. Yes, its a 138 car with simple options - 396, buckets, 4 speed, posi and oh yeah speed minder warning... now that's funny. Thanks again to everyone who commented. - Original Message - From: Clint Hooper To: The Chevelle Mailing List Sent: Wednesday, October 05, 2005 11:43 AM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] 1968 SS El Camino Hope you know I was only ribbing you about your car's ride height,Randy. A little more on the car to answer a few of the list questions. I built the car to basically keep it's stock appearance and to qualify for collector plates. The paint is the original factory color Tripoli Turquoise, but in base and clear. The rear is a factory 12 bolt posi, with when I bought them long ago what were called cargo coils and basic h/d shocks. The factory control arms are boxed with polyurethane bushings. No-hop bars help with wheel hop. Thanks again Randy

Randy, It isn't that expensive to have yours restored. Is it in good condition and complete? What all are you wanting done? If they are reproduced by someone please let me know, otherwise a used one would have to be NOS condition. I have checked into having mine restored, but I fear I will have to give up a ton of cash and my first born son to have it done. Thanks. Randy. Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: [Chevelle-list] 1968 SS El Camino
You know it's scary when I actually figure the length of time I have owned this car and what I/we have gone through. First it's a SS, BB, four speed, posi, buckets, the colour is Tripoli turquoise with black trim. I first saw the car at about 16 or 17, a girl from my home town used to cruise it with another girl that drove a black 63 vette. Guess I fell in love or lust with the car or the girl first..not quite sure. A few years later I saw the car up on blocks in an apt. complex, inquired about it and bought it. Paid about $3000 can for it which for me at the time was a lot. That was 24 years ago The condition of the car was pretty good other that the drive train. She had replaced the 396 with a brand new 427 425 horse short block and used the 396 heads. When I got it had a very noticeable knock, no wonder. I later found a set of brand new still in the box 427 open chamber cast heads for 50 bucks, bored it 30over changed the pistons and drove the crap out of it. Got banned from two municipalities more tickets than I care to remember and had the fastest mattress in town. Since then there are two kids a divorce, white picket fences etc etc, you get the picture. The car sat idle stored in a garage for many years until the chance meeting of a mechanic who is one of a kind. He's turned out to be a very good friend, no wonder, I gave him about $7000 on the drive train and that was just to cover the beer and Crown Royal (that's a Can.thing) He's the one that talked me into restoring back to stock. In British Colombia, Can we have a insurance rate that is called collector status, that is what I am trying to achieve. So get this; he interviewed me to be a potential customer not the other way around. The car today oddly enough is just about to be sprayed. New drive train, full inner and outer 1/4 panels new bed (30 hours in the box alone). I could go on for a long time and have some pretty funny stories but I fear this email is getting rather lengthy. If you want to hear more drop me a line and I will continue. The 69's (all three versions) just became available this year. Now that the 69's are done, I suspect that the '68's will follow. I haven't received any official word on them yet, but I suspect they will be available next year. Re: [Chevelle-list] 1968 SS El Camino
Hi, there is a company here called CV Vacuum platers www.specialtychromedplastics.com They quoted me $ 450 can ( $300 us??). Mine, and I didn't do it, has 3 - 1/2 inch holes drilled in the little panel just above where the heater controls are. Other than that it's pretty good. I want it to be like new. Just feel that it's a little steep, cause there's no where to go. Repo stuff and all.
