RE: where exactly is the equipment replicated ? [7:26243]
memory is hazy. in the original radio broadcast, there is much to do made about "the answer". those seeking learn that the answer to "life, the universe, and everything" is 42 and they realize it makes no sense. they are told that the answer makes perfect sense if they ask the right question. they commission the mice to run another computer study to derive the question. the program is terminated prematurely when the Volgons (?) destroy Earth 5 minutes too soon, which was the impetus that began Ford Prefect's adventures, and his discoveries of the true purpose of the earth and all it contains. My recollection is that we never do learn the question, and therefore are left with an answer that is totally meaningless, even if it is "the answer". I've always enjoyed the delicious irony of hearing people throw out "42" as the answer, wondering if said speaker understands that without knowing the proper question, the "answer" indeed is meaningless. in my student days there was an apocryphal story making the rounds about the philosophy professor whose final consisted of one question: "why?" the only A was given to the student who answered "because!" if only router configurations were so open ended Chuck -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, November 15, 2001 8:37 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: where exactly is the equipment replicated ? Re: where exactly is the equipment replicated ? [7:26243]
My point, (other than a feeble attempt at humor related to the Guide), was that we couldn't decode a paragraph that he grabbed from the Internet anymore than we can answer what does 42 mean. I don't expect everyone to research every question. We wouldn't exist as a group if that were possible. But I do expect people to apply some logic. If you want help, you have to give us enough information to help you. In this case he could have told us where he got the paragraph, what was the previous paragraph, what's the title of the page, etc. Maybe he wasn't a native English speaker and thought that we could help because we didn't have to translate. That's a fair excuse. But I didn't want to say that because some people would be sensitive about such assumptions, (plus his English was fine.) Well, back to your regularly scheduled program. I apologize for wasting bandwidth on meta-topics, but this is called proactive bandwidth management. Maybe if we can advise people on how best to use this group, then less bandwidth will be wasted in the future. Or maybe not... Cheers. Don't yell at me! Thanks. ;-) Priscilla At 11:13 PM 11/14/01, Wojtek Zlobicki wrote: >Lets try that again , being a little trigger happy :) > > > And I have a question for you. What does 42 mean? You'll have to tell us the context. Where did you get the wording below and what is it in reference too? It sounds like a bunch of "hand waving" that might make more sense with some context, but might not. Very few companies would implement multiple, parallel networks to meet availability goals, but some might. The sentence at the end doesn't fit. Did it come from somewhere else? Or maybe it fits if you read this as advertising material from a service provider. Are they trying to justify why a customer should use them for redundancy or something? It's impossible to tell. Re: where exactly is the equipment replicated ? [7:26243]
One thing that really has to be examined in scenarios like this is when to build your redundant data center and network yourself, or if better economies of scale come from putting the backup facilities into a well-connected hosting center. Such centers often, but not always, have lots of experience setting up the redundancy mechanisms. It even can be different with different parts of the same company -- I've had much better support from AT&T in Nashville then in Washington DC (hi Michelle!)
