Re: CatOS or IOS?

2000-09-28 Thread Hari V.Krishnan

Hi,
As a Cisco TAC engineer, I agree that the best (safest option) is the
CatOS/IOS mixture.
The Native IOS is still new and has some bugs to be resolved. However, it is
improving fast

Well, be careful. RSM infers the 5000 series, in which
case you'd be correct; the Catalyst 5000 series Sups only
run the CatOS.

On the 6000 series, though, you can run "Native IOS" mode
on the whole box; both the Supervisors (the "switching"
side) and the MSFCs (the "routers"). There are pros and
cons to both approaches, I chose to stick with the
CatOS/IOS blend on my new 6509 in order to stick with
what's familiar, but one day I'm sure IOS will be the
only choice.

RE: CatOS or IOS?

2000-09-28 Thread Craig Johnson

In my opinion, IOS isn't all that great for configuring large numbers of
identical ports. You have to go into each interface and set the parameters.
Cat IOS is great for that, cause you can type something link 4/1-24 for your
port range and configure all of them simultaneously.

if you go with the ios you only need to learn one command set for all your
devices.
also eventually all cisco gear will be ios based.

Hi Folks,

I have recently purchased a Catalyst 6509 to replace
one of my Catalyst 5000's. I've noticed that you have
the choice to run CatOS 5.x as usual or convert the
whole switch over to IOS 12.x. I've also been buying
some of the new Catalyst 3548-XL's and they too
run the IOS 12.x image's. My question to the group
is: what would be the advantages/disadvantages of
either software?

Re: CatOS or IOS?

2000-09-27 Thread srclevenger

Ray,
I have also purchased 3500 equipment and have found that the current
12.5.2.XU vers of the IOS has worked well with clustering and command line
as well as web based commands and setups including 802.1q. We have even
setup a mock lab and have not seen any issues. We will be introducing the
6509 MSFC1 dual switch processors to the mix next with the IOS software.
On the 6509 we thought the CAT OS would be too hard to learn. Make sure
(via our Cisco se) to be using the 12.1.1.E2 code. I have on order the
MFSC2 's but will not get them till late Oct.
Let me know if you wish me to give you the results.

regards,

Steve Clevenger

RE: CatOS or IOS?

2000-09-27 Thread McMasters, Eric

When we started purchasing 6509's our Cisco NSA Engineer advised us not to
use the integrated IOS because there are some major bugs that are associated
with it that have not been addressed. Now this was a couple of months ago,
so maybe these issues have been addressed, but I would do some investigating
first. If you are familiar with the Cat OS then I would go in that
direction and wait for the integrated IOS to become more stable. Just my 2
cents.
