Re: Stus-List C 26' or 27'?

2018-10-10 Thread Ronald B. Frerker via CnC-List
We had both on Carlyle.  As I recall the 26 was a more tender boat, and with
the larger beam needed more attention in the puffs.  However, it did better in
light air.  Our average wind is 10kts with a std deviation of 7, so we have a
number of days in the 3-5 and 5-7 range. The 27-3 was a great sailing boat, but
needed a bit more air to fully perform; closer to 10-12.  It did have speed
with a Pearson 30, which says something for a 27ft boat. All three folks (2 with
26s & 1 with 27) enjoyed their boats. Can't go wrong with either, but sounds
like the 27 needs a lot more work.  Fine if the price reflects that.OTOH, the
30-1 is a great boat.RonWild CheriC 30-1STL

Stus-List Anyone racing C 30 MKII?

2018-10-10 Thread Doug Ellmore via CnC-List
I am thinking of moving up from racing my C 24. The 30 MKII has many
features I am wanting in the next racer cruiser.

I wonder how the wing keel performs. Chesapeake PHRF rating is 180 vs 150
for standard keel.

I have won a few ragattas the last year with the 24, but ready for a boat
to also cruise some with the wife.

Stus-List 2018 Mid-Atlantic C Rendezvous Facebook page

2018-10-10 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Since someone here on the list requested live streams of this event I've
come up with a way to provide just that. I made a Facebook page for this
event. I don't plan to have a general area live feed but I do plan to have
introductions, boat tours, engine demos, rigging demos, knots and ropes
demos, and cooking demos. If you want to follow along or chime in please
head over and like/subscribe. This will also be a place where attendees
can share their own pictures, videos, and live streams. It might be a
little rough for the next few days but bear with me.

Re: Stus-List Hurricane Michael - afterwards

2018-10-10 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Spent day on Touche' watching Hurricane Michael. It was almost a non event
here in Pensacola.

I really feel for those less fortunate. Nasty, nasty storm. Going to be
lots of suffering.

The worst I saw was 30 knots during a gust or two. Not even much rain.
Storm surge on Bayou Chico was about 2.5 feet. Right now the sun is out
and it's blowing mid-teens with gusts to 22 knots.

Used the day to do a thorough cleaning below.

Re: Stus-List Holding tanks

2018-10-10 Thread Dave. via CnC-List
I still marvel that Rod knew the dimensions, manufacturer and model number of
the original holding tank on the C 33 mark 1. Thanks again Rod.
As this tank is no longer available and to manufacture a custom replacement
would be pretty expensive I’m now considering an AirHead composting toilet. All
reports are positive. My two concerns are, where to exit the vent hose and how
to power that vent without shore power. Have any of our listers made the
switch? Is so, how did you solve the venting problem?
Thanks again for your input.

Edd,
I have FX cruising weigth sails on my 37.
I had never heard of them but they came with boat and were very new 2014 and
minimal use. Guessing Main Maybe out 10 times over last 2-3 years ?? I know
real shame
I brought them to local sail loft for good cleaning and some minor repairs
since i had them off for Florence
His comments on the main were “ very nice sail”
Genoa 130- 135% dacron sail, with foam luff just needs new small strip of UV
and some light re- stitching
i am happy with the shape and way they perform. And would love some more info
as well :) so far so good
May add draft strip if its not to much $...

Re: Stus-List C 26' or 27'?

2018-10-10 Thread T Sutton via CnC-List
FWIW I wouldn’t lean toward a 26 or 27 with out looking into the 30 that was
offered first. If the 30 has been maintained and is any where close to sail
away condition it will be cheaper in the long run and a better boat from the
get go. If you like having a boat you are also less likely to want to move up
as soon as soon.

  Subject: Stus-List C 26' or 27'?

  Good morning all!

I know this is such a general and subjective question but it is one that I am
currently faced with. Imagine two boats, the 26' and the 27' both in the same
ball park in terms of price, the 26' is a bit newer, the 27' is a 1974.

Looking for a nice coastal cruiser and overnighter on the Maine coast as my
blue water days are probably over. I have two teenaged daughters so I so need a
bit of space aboard. The 26' has a 10.5 beam and good headroom, the 27' I
believe is 8.5? Good headroom and dinette set up.

I wont get into too many details but the 27 needs a bit more TLC but for sake
of argument, let's say they are of similar quality. Majot different is that the
26' has a Yanmar SB8 and the 27 an A4 with a bit of a cooling issue (perhaps
stemming form the water jacket?).

As a potential investment, which model would you recommend and why? I have
had several friends steer me toward the 27 as they felt that there is no market
for a fat 26'er?!!?! Really? IS the 27' a safer bet? Better choice for what I
am looking for or better when it comes to resale (possibly)?

Any specifics on sailing characteristics and how the two might match up? The
27' needs a rudder rebuild which I have done once and am comfortable doing so
Im not too scared about that, but it is a major repair that should be fixed
sooner than later. winches were stiff and would need attention...also had a
hank on Jib where the 26 has roller furling headsail. No MSD tank in the 27',
the 26' is ready to go.

Curious what the consensus might be in the group and any comments or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated and helpful.

  Thanks so much

  Chris

Speaking of 30-1s, I saw hull #493 (built 1976), named Katherine Patricia,
moored at Emerald Bay, Santa Catalina Island, California, on Saturday. She was
beautiful and her owner is not on this list. Pics at
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ivBtQ1bvQb0VoIqZ3LX6WVXPTA-27PbM.

I’d chartered (a pig of a) Catalina 390 over there for a 4-day weekend, and
imagine my delight seeing one of Grenadine’s sister ships at my first mooring
site.

That’s the third SoCal C I saw in two consecutive weekends sailing there.

Re: Stus-List New Genoa?

2018-10-10 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
Last offseason I sent two headsails to SailCare and was very pleased with their
customer service and the results of their work. I will use them again and I
recommend them. If I remember correctly, they give a 15% discount if you send
in your sail in the fall (avoid the spring rush).

Cheers,
Randy

I have had
several friends steer me toward the 27 as they felt that there is no market for
a fat 26'er?!!?! Really? IS the 27' a safer bet? Better choice for what I am
looking for or better when it comes to resale (possibly)?

Any specifics on sailing characteristics and how the two might match up? The
27' needs a rudder rebuild which I have done once and am comfortable doing so
Im not too scared about that, but it is a major repair that should be fixed
sooner than later. winches were stiff and would need attention...also had a
hank on Jib where the 26 has roller furling headsail. No MSD tank in the 27',
the 26' is ready to go.

Curious what the consensus might be in the group and any comments or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated and helpful.

Thanks so much

So I am refinishing the table and have removed the aluminum corner

Stus-List padwheel issues

2018-10-10 Thread robert via CnC-List

Dan:

If I understand you correctly, your speed instrument (digital) is not
showing even a "0.00" when your turn it on.  If that is the case, your
issue is probably not the padwheel.    My old Signet knot meter (34
years) reads 0.00 when the padwheel is not spinningit reads 0.00 as
soon as I turn on the instrument.

You should have a plug which allows you to remove the transducer with the
boat in the water. Simple process of pulling the transducer and inserting
the plug. If done quickly, you might let 2 cups of water in. Will need a
person spinning the paddle and one looking at the instrument.

Stus-List C 26' or 27'?

2018-10-10 Thread Chris Graham via CnC-List
I have had
several friends steer me toward the 27 as they felt that there is no market for
a fat 26'er?!!?!

Re: Stus-List New Genoa?

That would be a bad idea. A 170 would be made out of light cloth and would be
ruined in heavy air. Also you can only roll in so far and have a decent sail.
IMHO for cruising most of our boats, a furling jib in the 130%-140% range and
an asym chute are a good combo.
Besides for that, between paying for a recut and the sacrificial sun cover, you
will be in for a lot of money for a very suboptimal sail.

My 73 C 30 mk1 came with a 170 also. I thought it might be possible to have
it cut when I get the furling hardware. It is a handful to fold on the deck and
get back into the bag.
