kicker came back...
then i launched kopete... same error... same solution... now it's the
same with openoffice... think i will do the same... but... anyone else
got into this kinda weirdness?

Yes, please identify the faultive font. There is either a bug in OOo or in
freetype library. In the mean time, please try the following library:
libvcl641li.so from
http://people.mandrakesoft.com/~gbeauchesne/openoffice/libs/

Faulty fonts i could identify were beachtyp.ttf and palascr.ttf

As is, it should still crash. Please verify that.
Yes it still crashed!

Then, before starting
OOo again, do SAL_EMBEDDED_BITMAP_PRIORITY=0 ooffice whatever options
and check whether it still crashes.

this time works fine, i tried to reproduce the bug but it works fine
now! I can even open the documents that hung it up before...

Thanks,
Gwenole.

Re: [Cooker] Terrible Mistake: KDEArtwork / OpenOffice.org Documentation / mod_perl Exclusion

2003-02-20 Thread Simone Riccio
well... i agree...

Timothy R. Butler wrote:

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi,
I just noticed that the KDE artwork package has been rejected for 9.1. IMO
this is a very very poor judgement. As my associate editor noted in his
review of 9.0, a distribution aimed at the desktop should have a selection of
screensavers. Now, the last I checked, if the user clicks next all the way
through Mandrake FirstTime without answering any questions, the system will
default to KDE. Likewise, you prefer the KDE dm (or the modified version
there of), so why is it that MDK is including screensavers for other
environments (xscreensaver) but not for KDE? I don't mean to sound harsh, but
I think this is a really bad mistake.

Personally, I'd get rid of some of the fancy xmms plugins, and provide the
more basic stuff first.

Likewise, why is something as *critically* important as OpenOffice.org
documentation being left out? Normal users need documentation, and normal
users using Mandrake will probably be using OO.o more consistantly than most
other applications. This is the kind of mistake that could hurt MDK's
reputation, I think.

Just a quick glance yields many included packages that seem somewhat
frivilous compared to OO.o documentation:

MandrakeLinux9.1-download-1 xmms-mesa-1.2.7-16mdk.i586
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-2 xfishtank-2.1tp-6mdk.i586
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 xearth-1.1-12mdk.i586
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 xine-plugins-1-0.beta4.1mdk.i586
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 xine-ui-aa-0.9.18-1mdk.i586
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 xine-ui-fb-0.9.18-1mdk.i586
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 xmms-diskwriter-1.2.7-16mdk.i586
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 xmms-more-vis-plugins-unsafe-1.6.0-2mdk.i586
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 mplayer-skins-1.3-4mdk.noarch

Still other things make sense, but in a distribution primarily used on
desktops, makes less sense than OO.o documentation:

MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 php-manual-de-4.3.0-2mdk.noarch
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 php-manual-en-4.3.0-2mdk.noarch
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 php-manual-es-4.3.0-2mdk.noarch
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 php-manual-fr-4.3.0-2mdk.noarch
MandrakeLinux9.1-download-3 php-manual-it-4.3.0-2mdk.noarch

And if Mandrake is server focused now, why is mod_perl-common being
excluded?

Another option would be to move certain -devel packages only onto the FTP
site. Knowledgable users, those who might deal with those packages, will know
where to get them. For example:

MandrakeLinux9.1-download-2 koffice-devel-1.2.1-6mdk.i586

How many people actually ever even need koffice-devel versus KDE
screensavers or OpenOffice.org documentation? Very few.

In summary, I think MandrakeSoft needs to reconsider some of the ommissions.
Things like Screen Savers and Wallpaper (kdeartwork) are things that are
being HYPED as *FEATURES* by other desktop distributions, whereas very few
people coming in to Mandrake Linux (relatively speaking) are going to use the
XMMS diskwriter plugin or the xearth background.

Likewise, if MandrakeSoft wants to be taken seriously on the business
desktop, things like OO.o documentation are FAR more important than MPlayer
skins. Telling a CIO that Sorry, we don't include OO.o documentation 'cuz
MPlayer skins rulez isn't going to work (sorry for the over dramatization,
but I think it shows the irony).

In summary, considering that 9.1 is probably the most critical release in
MandrakeSoft's history (IMO), I think it is necessary not to go and make the
same mistakes that happened last time around. Stuff like kdeartwork was
complained about all over the place after last release, and OO.o
documentation could very well become a very sore point that tarnish's 9.1's
reputation. Is xearth and some XMMS visualisations worth this?

work fine some months ago, but for the last 2-3 months, all time zones
show the exact same time. Is it possible that one of the cooker updates
to timezone, timeconfig or whatever doesn't like some old setting that I
still have around?

In fact the icons directory is missing! What is the deal?

Here are the versions of XFree86:

I noticed the same thing. A temporary work-around is to create a
.Xdefaults file in your home directory. Mine contains:

# default user settings for X

Xcursor.size: 16
Xcursor.theme: whiteglass
---
# eof

How do you mean, temporary workaround? This isn't a bug, it's a design
choice. The reversion to old cursors is mentioned in the changelog of
the latest X as something MDK have decided to do.

. i don't like the choice much... white and redglass looked muh more

Re: [Cooker] system slowness using cdrecord

2002-10-23 Thread Simone Riccio
Well, that happens me too! i have a 24x LG cd-rw and when i'm burning or
reading cds i can't do anything else! My hw is a bit different (that's
my office pc, I'D NEVER BUY iNTEL) hp vectra vl420 with p4 1.6GHz and
800MB SDRAM, so i suppose it dowsn't much depend on that...

On Wed, 2002-10-23 at 05:28, Stephen Pickering wrote:
I have the same problem, I also use a 24x lite-on cd burner.

It worked fine with 8.2, but using 9.0 (kernel 2.4.19-16mdk) it seems to
take an age,
30minutes for a 20mb cd :-(

I have noticed that during burn the red light of the cd only comes of
for short pulses
then it goes green, so it's not writing very often. When I first used it
I aborted it after
a while as I didn't think it was working only to see that it had burned
some of the cd,
but VERY VERY slowly.

I'm using an XP1500 with an ASUS A7V133 m/b with a clean install of 9.0 !

It's nice to see it's not just me :-(

Gregory K. Meyer wrote:

I am reporting this here because the cooker kernel has not been updated since
the release of 9.0, and I think this problem is kernel related.

In 8.2, I could burn a CDR at max speed (24x) on my Lite-On burner while doing
lots of other stuff, never burned a coaster. CPU utilization was always
minimal.

In 9.0, doing the same thing causes cpu cycles to go to almost 100%, cd burner
never achieves top speed and I get lots of buffer underruns.

I have recompiled the cooker src.rpm for the latest cdrecord and the 8.2
src.rpm for cdrecord, so I don't think it is cdrecord. I get this same
behavior no matter which version of cdrecord I use in 9.0. I experience the
problem no matter how I invoke cdrecord.

If I run top while burning, lot's of stuff is using 5-6% of my cpu, but
cdrecord tops out at 6% or so.

I have the ide-scsi modules loaded under 8.2 and 9.0 the same way. Under both
versions, the burner is properly detected as /dev/scd0.

This seems to be kernel related. When I boot the vanilla linus 2.4.19 kernel,
I don't expereince this problem. When I boot the 8.2 kernel, I don't
experience this problem. If I boot the 2.4.19-16mdk kernel, as well as my
2.4.19-win4lin patched kernel, I experience the problem.

[Cooker] Other stuff to be fixed

2002-09-06 Thread Simone Riccio

Phpgroupware doesn't work at all, the only way to make it work i figured
out was downloading the tar.gz and overwrite the folder... so that you can
setup it again... since mdk version has not 'header.inc.template.php'
there is no way to setup headers from scratch.

There still seem to be trouble with x on my laptop (omnibook xe3)... the
login screen appears, seems to work, but after about 40 secs exits and
goes back to shell login... no error msgs appear and if i login and call
startx there's no problem! This doesn't happen on my desktop... might be
because of the I830 on the laptop?

When using the shortcut for file manager super user mode it also appears
a konsole which actually loads kdesu an konqueror... weird...

btw, this all happens on today's cooker mirror sync...

all the best,
Simon

I think this should be a QT not KDE as qt apps look good under kde (especially
qt3) and users of any window manager except kde will probably not want ti
have to install kdelibs as well as QT, much like MCC not requiring gnome
rpms, just the gtk ones. I believe this then also makes it relatively simply
to integrate MCC into the kdecontrol center for KDE users, and still have it

how about setting up

not a bad idea I think, perhaps with a timidity-server package

Thank-you. I think this would really makes things easier.

Definately a very good idea.

10.) What about including the Mandrake documentation in docbook xml
like KHelpCenter uses (IIRC, I think Gnome Help Center may use it too)

Yes, for gnome 2 the help system (Yelp) will use docbook XML (gnome 1
used docbook SGML and made HTML on install or packaging).

Even better then. This would take care of both Gnome and KDE.

Again, a very sound idea.

I also think it would be a good idea to include more kde (and no reason not
for other wms as well) themes and icons (liquid, crystal icons etc) as
optional packages. Currently these have to be fetched manually, which is
nowhere near as pleaent as a 'urpmi package'. Obviously some of the great
themes might have liscence problems, but the ones that dont would be great
additions.

Just a few thoughts
