you neither run kde desktop nor run any kde apps under any other
 desktop/wm ?

I run KDE, no sound when I run Kscd, Xmms (from menu and command line with
soundwrapper) or just system sounds
I also tried Gnome, just the same non system sound, Xmms idem, Kscd idem...

Re: [Cooker] [Bug 509] [kernel] Intel ICH4 based Motherboards-- sound and IDE DMA do not work

2003-03-06 Thread mailinglist
kde sound daemon (artsd) is using your sound card.
you should hear sound in kde applications.
if you run apps through their menu entries, most multimedia apps
should use soundwrapper to disable artds while you use a sound app
 (game, sound editor, ...)

you can try it by runnin eg soundwrapper xmms on the cli

I tried both menu entries and command line ie soundwrapper xmms and still
have no sound. I don't even have KDE sounds system. Any idea ?

killall artsd will stop artsf from using your sound card, but that is
not the proper fix

b) trying to start up dma does not work.

 using_dma=  0 (off)

The disks are very slow.

c) Sound does not work. The standare oss drivers do not load at all. -- error
that the codec cannot be intialised. The alsa drivers load fine, but again
no sound. (again using the onboard sound ICH4 sound card)

/sbin/fuser -v /dev/dsp will tell which program uses the sound card.

 /dev/dsp fab2170 f artsd

so what's wrong with it ?

kde sound daemon (artsd) is using your sound card.
you should hear sound in kde applications.
if you run apps through their menu entries, most multimedia apps
should use soundwrapper to disable artds while you use a sound app
(game, sound editor, ...)

you can try it by runnin eg soundwrapper xmms on the cli

soundwrapper doesn't disable artsd (or esd) before starting the program, it launches
the program using artsd (or esddsp) so that it can use artsd (or esd) for sound output.

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-02-21 19:50 ---
These bugs were already fixed in the 2.4.20 kernel, and I assume remain
fixed in 2.4.21, but have not tested that and will not until it is
finally released.
