http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4690 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-04-10 18:11 --- I talked with 3 Dell people on the phone and browsed Dell's and Creative's web sites. The problem with Dell's Sound Blaster Live is that their new computers ship with sound cards that have the DSP chip crippled so that all sound processing functions take place in software rather than hardware (like a WinModem). Creative and Dell have no solution to this, but I got Dell to send me a replacement Sound Blaster Audigy 2. Because this is a driver issue, there is probably nothing Mandrake can or should do at this time. Mandrake did successfully detect and configure my Audigy 2 without *any* input from me, so I was very impressed. Anyone with this problem should contact Dell and get them to provide a replacement. Thanks for the help. -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: UNCONFIRMED creation_date: description: in 9.2 beta 2 the sound blaster live driver does not take properly. i have opened mandrake control center and went to the sound card and enter emu on several occasions and it does not accept the change. audigy is still present. i have had to enter it and reboot and enter it again and reboot over and over and then finally it works.

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4690 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-25-09 01:42 --- When I mute or unmute the Analog/Digital Output Jack (there is no analog output jack), nothing changes. I have also tried pretty much every other possible combination of muting/unmuting between the many sliders. My modules.conf is as follows: above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss alias eth0 e100 probeall usb-interface usb-uhci ehci-hcd alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1 probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi alias sound-slot-1 snd-emu10k1 above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss I have integrated sound, but it is disabled in the BIOS (it was enabled when I first installed, and probably why it is listed). I would just use the integrated sound, but Dell didn't put any external output jacks for it because the Sound Blaster Live is present. There is a slider called Sigmatel Surround that makes static increase or decrease when I slide it, but it does not affect actual music or anything else. gnome-alsamixer identifies the card as SigmaTel STAC9708/11 if that helps, rather than Sound Blaster or anything like that. Thanks a lot if you can help me! -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: UNCONFIRMED creation_date: description: in 9.2 beta 2 the sound blaster live driver does not take properly. i have opened mandrake control center and went to the sound card and enter emu on several occasions and it does not accept the change. audigy is still present. i have had to enter it and reboot and enter it again and reboot over and over and then finally it works.

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4690 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-21-09 22:18 --- Well, I found out what the problem was with my sound card. Apparently Dell deviates from the standard OEM spec for Sound Blaster Live! 5.1. The EMU10K1 drivers just don't work on it (yet). The problem has been around since the Spring, and no one from Dell seems to care (though it's acknowledged on their support page). There are commercial EMU10K1X drivers available from a third party, but they cost $35 and the demo only works for 3 hours. Mandrake detects the card as EMU10K1X, so I was hoping they had drivers for it, but apparently it's just detection. They don't have the drivers or any equivalent. If there is an open source equivalent someone can point me to, I'd be really happy. Otherwise, I'm just going to try to swap the card with my old SB Live card and that should hopefully work. Thanks everybody for all the help. I guess the moral is that I should have listened to my conscience and not bought from a major OEM. -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: NEEDINFO creation_date: description: in 9.2 beta 2 the sound blaster live driver does not take properly. i have opened mandrake control center and went to the sound card and enter emu on several occasions and it does not accept the change. audigy is still present. i have had to enter it and reboot and enter it again and reboot over and over and then finally it works.

Value. I have upgraded to the latest Cooker packages as of 17 Sept 2003 but it still does not work. I get no error messages whatsoever, and with aumix and Kmix I can verify sound isn't muted. Increasing the volume does increase the static coming out of the speakers. However, no sound plays, in WAV, MP3, MPG, AVI, MOV, etc. I have tried both emu10k1 and snd-emu10k1. I got some help from the guys at PCLinuxOnline (http://www.pclinuxonline.com/modules.php?name=Forumsfile=viewtopictopic=2116forum=19) but the problem is still unresolved. Any suggestions? Thanks. I do not think (also from what I read in that link) that you have the same problem as in that bug. a couple of things: - are you using analog or digital speakers? - if analog: in what channel are they plugged (there is a 1 and a 2 on your card, try to use 1, 2 colors as well, but too lazy to check;). - do you use alsa (type lsmod, do you see snd-emu10k1 there, or just emu10k1)? - IF you use alsa and have your speakers in second channel, you need to mute the analog output jack and increase the volume with wave surround, use kmix or alsamixergui to do this. NOT aumix - if you use alsa and have your speakers in first channel, check if all is unmuted in kmix/alsmixergui, if still doesn't work, post output of amixer - if you want to switch cards, use the soundcard config in harddrake. the KDE settings have no effect at all on the driver you are using, just on what kde uses as output. To exclude arts problems, test your sound with xmms or some other non-kde program. d.

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4690 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-29-08 04:10 --- I have same problem. I intentionally select emu10k1 instead of audigy during 9.2RC1 installation. When it boots up, dunno y both drivers are trying to load at the same time -- emu10k1 failed to load. The info you requested is below. The tricky part is, I think, if one uses Gnome, the volumn control will start when desktop launches. If one tries to switch sound drivers under harddrake, it will fail cuz it can't shut down alsa since it's being used by volumn control.
