Bug#387984: [INTL:ku] Kurdish translations for debian-installer

The translator answered me privately that he doesnt and *doesn't want to* ("we cannot learn about each VCS used by every free software project"). I'm currently insisting as I don't want to enter a "special case" loop where, for some languages, the coordinator is allowed to not use the SVN and, thus, add load on us. Kurdish began before we established the formal new language process which means we never went throught the step where it becomes highly clear that our work method is the SVN. That's too bad and I don't want this mistake to repeathowever, I still think that having a small checkout of packages/po is definitely not a big hassle for translators and we shouldn't make exceptions to tour policy. For that reason, I ask other team members to not commit this translation yet. The discussion will probably continue in private with Erdal. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Sorry, this made it miss the dinstall run even though I had it ready much before that. Peter prepared the new packages very quickly and we could indeed have had the new font in Debian the very same day of the upstream announcement (actually less then 3-4 hours after it). Bug#387767: Installation Failure
Let me preface my information below by saying that while I was trying different things, I found that if I don't set the framebuffer to false, I never see the kernel panic. The system locks up tight with a gray bar (row) at the bottom of a blue screen. If I do set the frame buffer to false, I can switch consoles when the system appears to hang (black row at the bottom of a blue screen) before I get the kernel panic message. I booted the CD using the following at the boot prompt: expert noapci nolapci apcpi=off I choose language, country, en_US.UTF-8, no additional locales, PC-style keyboard, and American English keymap. I then get the "Detect and mount CD-ROM", the next screen shows 28 kernel modules that were detected, then the "Detecting hardware..." progress bar completes and a window pops up asking "Start PC Card services?". I tab to 'No' and hit Enter. At this point the machine locks up. I can't switch to another console. I don't get a kernel panic this time. The system just totally locks up. I tried both CD#1 and the NETINST CD and got the same results with both. On the 28 kernel modules that were detected, there was floppy, USB, isofs, and the rest all have to do with IDE. They are: via82cxxx trm290 triflex sic90e66 sis5513 ssimage serverworks sc1200 rz1000 pdc202xx_old pdc202xx_new opti621 ns87415 it821x npt34x cy82c693 cs5535 cs5530 cs5520 cmd64x atiixp amd74xx alim15x3 aec62xx ide-generic I tried de-selecting all modules except ide-generic and isofs and still got the lockup/kernel panic. I don't know which module would be appropriate for the Intel AL440LX mobo. I will supply most of the text of the kernel panic message tomorrow. It's very late here and I need to get some sleep before work tomorrow. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I can reproduce this issue as follows: - in expert mode - run user-setup answering No at "login as root" (sudo setup) - complete other questions until menu is shown - run user-setup again and change "login as root" to Yes At that point you would expect the system to ask for a root password, but it does not. Effectively this means the system will still be set up for sudo (and probably not fully correct), even though the user changed his mind. Cheers, FJP pgpMY75HqEz8m.pgp Description: PGP signature

So the modules are loaded correctly but the panic seems to happen when the CD is accessed. Can you try to run the installation in expert mode so we can see at exactly which step the failure occurs. We can try more debugging once we know this. Another thing to try in expert mode is to load only those modules relevant for your hardware in the "Detecting hardware to find CD-ROMs" step. I understand that the issue has also been raised on the debian-alpha list, hopefully people there can help. Another option is to contact the upstream kernel maintainers for alpha. Bug#387897: Installation report
Hi, At the first time I used Loop-aes. I think I used the random key in that time as I wasn't going to use any keyfiles. After I noticed I couldn't create LVM-partitions with it I decided to change to dm-crypt. I rebooted and retried to create the partitions and used the dm-crypt on this time. Because the wiping takes a lot of time, I skipped it. I used the passphrase this time but this time the problem occured. When I encrypted one partition, I tried to create lvm-partition on it. I think this somehow removed the encryption as it vanished from the menu and the lvm stayed in there. Again, I removed the partitions and exited the installer to begin a new to find a some solution. After this I tested all kind of configurations but after it has asked the passphrase and would have started to write these encrypted partitions on disk it always gave the same error. I'm not 100% sure but it might have given a error about partition already being in use or something. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact error messages anymore. The problem is probably something in the installer itself as I installed a minimal setup with no problems and then booted into it and created the encrypted partition and lvm2-partitions over it without any problems. Hope this information is helpful Timo "Zmyrgel" Myyrä Max Vozeler kirjoitti: Hi Timo, On Sun, Sep 17, 2006 at 12:44:04PM +0300, Timo Myyrä wrote: I had troubles with the crypting my harddrive. It just said that error happened. I could choose the encryption and all but when I was supposed to write them to disk it started complaing about error. This happened after it asked the passphrase. Also, I couldn't create LVM-partitions on the encrypted partition. I tried both, dm-crypt and the loop-AES. Unfortunately I don't have the logs anymore. I checked the partman log when trying encryption and it said something like following: "/lib/partman/choose_partitions/35crypto/do_option: cryptsetup failed" Encryption seemed to work the first time when I wiped the partition and tested it but I couldn't make the partitioning I wanted so I exited the installer and booted to retry but it wouldn't work anymore. Do you remember if one or more of the partitions were configured to use a random key ? I'm asking because there is a known problem with using random key encryption in the GUI installer. This affects both normal loop-AES partitions with "keyfile" key and dm-crypt partitions with "random" key. Those cannot be setup using the GUI installer because a component required for those configurations is not available for the gtk frontend. On the other hand, you said it showed a normal error dialog, so maybe this was actually caused by something different. If the problem was indeed the missing component, it should have shown an error dialog saying "tools missing for encryption", instead of simple "an error occured". I will try to reproduce this problem. David, maybe you have an idea what might have gone wrong? cheers, Max -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#348712: #348712: suggested root partition size too small - additional info
Hi, there is a problem with this recommendation: how big the root partition has to be, depends on which underlying directories are on a separate partition or not: what if you have a "everything on one partition" partitioning scheme... So, there should be something like this: The root partition / must always physically contain /etc, /bin, /sbin, /lib and /dev, otherwise you won't be - able to boot. Typically 150–250MB is needed for the root - partition. + able to boot. If you have such partitioning scheme, where / + only contains the mentioned data, 150-250MB should fit. But if + you have for example no separate /usr partition and therefore + /usr is also contained in the root partition, you need additional + space there. Bug#387940: [etch-beta3] Option to use cryptsetup's -i argument
Package: partman-crypto Severity: minor Hi, it would be nice if you were able to tweak the -i option of cryptsetup in the installer (as of etch-beta3 you can't). The default (if you don't supply -i) is to use '-i 1000'. There should be an option to use another value here, even though it is debatable as to how much you gain from a higher value. At least if you boot with 'expert' you should IMHO be able to tweak that value. Re: Bladr GTK theme for g-i ready for packaging
There is starting a discussion on debian-desktop for artwork for debian, regarding etch and etch+1 [0]. It would be nice if the debian installer come with the same "theme" (layout, colour scheme). [D-I] mass kernel udeb update and preparations for RC1
(Reply-to set to debian-boot; please only add relevant port if needed.) Dear (d-i) porters, First mass upload of kernel udebs = Today I have uploaded kernel udeb updates to 2.6.17-9 _for all arches_. This is the first time using the 'massbuild' [1] script I wrote recently. Effectively this means that d-i porters won't really have to worry anymore about updating kernel udebs after uploads by the kernel team. Only if the kernel major/minor changes will I request porters to do the upload themselves. For stable releases (including ABI changes) I intend to do these mass builds and do the uploads myself. Hopefully this will help the speed with which kernel udebs are updated and allow you all to spend more time testing d-i ;-) Of course porters are still responsible for maintaining which modules will be included for each arch/flavor. If you have changes between kernel major/minor releases you can either commit them and upload, or commit them as UNRELEASED and they will be automatically included in the next mass build. The massbuild script can be used for single-arch builds too. Its main advantage is that kernel images don't need to be installed and the certainty that the correct kernel version will be used. Feel free to contact me to help you get started. Some comments on today's upload: - I have used the last released version of kernel-wedge and will normally do that in the future too - I have not really checked or tested the udebs [2], so there could be some surprises; please be alert for them - m68k: I had to update the dependencies from kernel-image to linux-image The road to RC1 === We are slowly moving towards RC1. I plan to post an initial planning later this week. As we get closer to Etch, testing the installer for all arches gets to be more important. Any time you can spend on that is very much appreciated. There are some issues that need attention: * type of initrd used Some arches have already switched to using initramfs for d-i initrds, other arches are still using cramfs or ext2. Please check if a change could/should be made for your architecture. * 2.4 support now officially dropped Starting with RC1 d-i will no longer support 2.4 based installations. All arches have been switched now and some cleanup has been started; more cleanup is expected and this may cause unexpected breakage. * support for non-devfs device names Colin Watson has committed a series of changes to make d-i support non-devfs device names. We will be slowly moving away from using devfs names, but the most intrusive work will be postponed until after Etch. Please check for unexpected breakage though. * partman-auto using LVM and crypto partman-auto-lvm now has been available for some time, but is still not available for all arches. LVM support is a prerequisite for partman-auto-crypto support which will be uploaded soon. Note: swap on LVM should be possible now and is even required for partman-auto-crypto. If you would like to add support for it, please see [3]. Feel free to contact me or David Härdeman (Alphix) for help. * mips: keyboard issues We've had a report about a dead keyboard on installation (#382983). This needs to be investigated. * powerpc: oldworld boot problems with recent kernels If there are other architecture specific issues that we should be aware of, please let me know. Cheers, FJP [1] http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/d-i/people/fjp/massbuild?op=file&rev=0&sc=0 [2] The script does have a number of sanity checks though. David, maybe you have an idea what might have gone wrong? cheers, Max

We don't want to provide a broken build do we? :) Well, as it will be uploaded ASAP, and the only problem will be NEW, it should be no major problem, please don't remove it just now yet. It is not the default, so breakage will only come to those who know what they do. Also, it will be an error at grub2 install time, not run time, and you should maybe do like yaboot-installer, check an absence of ofpathname, and then either try to use yaboot's ofpath, and if this one returns empty, abort and inform the user. Notice that the grub2/powerpc port was done over a year ago on a pegasos machine donated for that purpose, and that the guys porting opensolaris on powerpc use it as their main bootloader, and i have seen it turn a year or so back on both a dual power3 IBM pseries/rs6k, as well as on a powermac, and on a pegasos. This is Bug#386675 (ITP: powerpc-ibm-utils -- Utilities for maintenance of IBM PowerPC platforms) which blocks Bug#377097 (yaboot: ofpath fails on IBM JS21 blades). The powerpc-ibm-utils package will have the same Priority & Section the legacy powerpc-utils package have, i.e. important & utils, and Yaboot will depend on it to use ofpathname. While ofpathname uses sysfs, and supports a wider range of devices, it doesn't support partitions on devices (needed by yaboot), and also has a different output format than yaboot. yaboot would need updating to support it. Or do you want to just fall back on the default (or no) icons? I have no idea, it is usable without any PNGs, I will add them to see if they appear on screen. IIRC, HighContrastLargeInverse provides its own PNGs. Symlinking is possible, of course, but result would be poor, if not counterproductive, as we would add Reddish PNGs to a B&W theme. Could you provide some screenshots? IMO the look of the theme should be approved first, at least by the team. Here is a screenshot [1] of what Bladr looks like (very nice, IMHO :) and there is also a *very* old ISO [2] i made that includes Bladr theme. How is the theme copyrighted? Luca built Bladr taking inspiration from already GPL'ed GTK themes, and the Bladr itself is reeased as GPL (as stated into the gtkrc configuration file) A tarball can be found here [1] and i suggest (at least for the short period) to package Bladr in the rootskel-gtk theme like it was proposed to do for the GTK accessibility theme by Denis. I suppose: s/rootskel-gtk theme/rootskel-gtk udeb/ Of course! I see that the total size of the theme is ~500 kB. I guess that is acceptable, though it is very much not negligible. Are all included files really needed? The biggest file provided by the tarball is the gtkrc file (~32 KB), and PNGs for widget surfaces do the rest. PNGs are indeed big, but maybe they could be compressed some more to save up a little extra space. An issue arises: to make GTKDFB able to load PNGs for themes, the pixmap loading library must be provided, like the package gtk2-engines-pixmap does on a regular debian system by providing "libpixmap.so" on a X GTK target. I suppose: s/gtk2-engines-pixmap/gtk-engines-pixmap/ Again right :) Have you checked the dependencies of that lib (i.e. does it depend on other libs we currently do not have)? I'm not a kernel hacker in any way, but it seems quite weird that even a self compiled kernel hangs on boot. Could it be that aboot is broken somehow, or the kernel is missing some patches that are required for ES45 support? Bladr is instead much bigger, it's about 215 KB big, so total space required on installation ISO by both the gtk theme and the engine library wil be roughly 250KB. I also tried Woody & Sarge CD-images, but it seems that their kernels are compiled with CONFIG_ALPHA_LEGACY_START_ADDRESS=y and thus don't work with ES45. In desperation, I compiled the latest 2.6 kernel git snapshot (as of yesterday) on my XP1000 which had Etch installed, moved the disk to the ES45 and tried booting it, but still got the same hang! The last thing I tried, was CentOS 4.3 CD and it seemed to work just fine, so I do believe that there is something broken on Etch/Alpha with the Titan systems (ES45, DS25). I'm not a kernel hacker in any way, but it seems quite weird that even a self compiled kernel hangs on boot. Could it be that aboot is broken somehow, or the kernel is missing some patches that are required for ES45 support? Re: grub2 on powerpc
Robert Millan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > As you might know, experimental grub2 support has been added to d-i > when using the expert mode, but it is only yet available on > i386/amd64. I think powerpc support might be a bit premature. The powerpc code upstream is a bit lagging compared with i386/amd64, and depends on tools not in Debian. For example, changed to the i386 shell scripts have not been made to the corresponding powerpc scripts; this really needs to be made into common code, to avoid this needless effort. The same also applies to some of the C source. It's not a great deal of work to fix these issues, but I am currently lacking sufficient time to do it myself. This may be outdated though--I haven't checked out grub2 for a couple of months, so it may have already been rectified. Regards, Roger -- .''`.
