random on the right edge of the primary screen. The secondary screen is
right of the primary and rotated. I suspect it is specific to this
hardware because the lines are quite easily noticed with light web page
background and dark scrollbar in Firefox - it seems the web page is
bleeding into the scrollbar. I was unable to reproduce this in a terminal
or on the smaller screen so it might be also specific to the way Firefox
redraws its window. Yes, there is no reason to redraw but like it would
stop Mozilla products from redrawing. I did not notice this issue with
Radeon X550 card and slightly older X server - had to restart it when
 replacing the card.

Sorry, I did not install all the packages that were built out of the new source.

I re-checked because I saw that the radeon module version is still
6.12.2 in X log.

Installing the new radeon package resolved the problem.

It is true that I technically do not need that large virtual but this
is the smallest that is going to work with a 1280x1024 and a 1024x768
display for sure. The resolution I use when the screen is set up
properly is 2048x1024 but I must get there somehow, and smaller
virtual might make that harder.

Thanks

Bug#541403: linux-image-2.6.26-2-686: Local Privilege Escalation

2009-08-13 Thread Stefano
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-2-686
Version: 2.6.26-17
Justification: root security hole
Severity: critical
Tags: security

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Hi,

today a serious bug in the Linux Kernel has been discovered and
disclosed. It affects all 2.4 and 2.6 kernels since 2001 on all
architectures.

See here for more details:
http://blog.cr0.org/2009/08/linux-null-pointer-dereference-due-to.html

Hopefully this bug has already been patched:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=e694958388c50148389b0e9b9e9e8945cf0f1b98

I'm pretty sure that you guys already know that, but it is really urgent
to apply the patch and release an update for the linux-image packages.

Thank you for your fantastic job.

Stefano

Does
Option "DisplayPriority" "HIGH"
in the device section of your config help? Also, if you have a large
virtual setting in your config:
Virtual 2304 2304
reducing that might as help as well if you don't need all of it.
And finally, you might try disabling tiling:
Option "ColorTiling" "FALSE"

Winbind does not log to syslog by default on Debian. Do you think it's
necessary to add this dependency on the basis that a user /might/
reconfigure winbind to log to syslog?

2009-08-13 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Vincent Lefevre wrote:

> Sorry, I mixed up xz-lzma (which I didn't know) and xz-utils.

That's okay. xz-lzma contains programs and compatibility symlinks
providing the interface of the legacy LZMA Utils package. Those who
don't need the old command names can just install xz-utils, those who
want to use the old lzma implementation for some reason can install
xz-utils and lzma, and those who need the old command names for
scripts or muscle memory but would like to save some space can install
xz-utils and xz-lzma.

The version currently in Debian doesn't include xz-lzma yet, so there
was no way to know. I should have made that clearer.

As it got tested successfully by piuparts this is not a common issue. Please
run the maintainer script through bash -x (e.g. by adding a set -x to its top)
and provide a listing of /etc/ssl/certs. TIA.

The problem is that the exact changes fixing the problem are yet
unknown. If you can pinpoint the root cause we can consider a backport,
but since the crashes cannot be reproduced reliably bisecting or similar
methods are arguably hard.

After some discussion with Julien Cristau on the mailing list, I am now
convinced that the keymap setting should not done in this file, but in
debian-x11-keymap.fdi (see bug#535291).

I am therefore attaching the final (I hope) fdi file needed to make
this package working with hal on GNU/kFreeBSD.

Bug#533620: Re-assign 533620 to linux-2.6

2009-08-13 Thread Rainer Typke
Hi Moritz,

I am surprised that the Debian bug submitting program did not automatically
attach such a vital bit of information!

I do believe to have upgraded the kernel in the meantime, simply by installing
security upgrades, so I am probably no longer running that exact version. Right
now, I am running:

2.6.26-2-openvz-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jul 26 21:18:21 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

So - it probably was the version that was available on the Debian repositories
before this one.
Is there a reliable way of making sure?

The contents of my /boot directory are:
ll /boot/

Hope this helps!

Bug#541402: alpha: plasma segfault on kde4 startup

2009-08-13 Thread Bob Tracy
Package: kdebase-workspace-bin
Version: 4:4.2.4-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Since the upgrade from KDE3 to KDE4 on the Alpha platform, KDE has been
unusable. "/usr/bin/plasma" consistently segfaults on startup. This may
or may not be related to #519518: the reporter was using an i686 platform.
The following diagnostic output was captured (was not given the opportunity
to save it directly -- "save" button grayed-out):

This backtrace appears to be of no use.
This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents
creation of proper backtraces, or the stack frame was seriously corrupted in
the crash.

Same results with yesterday's git master.

The flashing lines occurs on the (physical) right of both screens
while Firefox is redrawing, especially while loading a web page. On
the smaller screen the right side is the logical top which typically
contains some menus or toolbars so the effect is not so easily
noticed.

It happens even when Firefox is not mapped (ie if I restart Firefox
which causes page loading and switch to a different desktop the lines
appear on the visible desktop.

Thanks

Sorry, I mixed up xz-lzma (which I didn't know) and xz-utils.
What's xz-lzma? (I can't find any reference to it on debian.org.)

I do not know. While I am clueless enough to forget to install the ssh server,
I am not *that* clueless, so I don't know what the RHEL, SLES, Ubuntu, HP-UX or
Solaris installers do in the face of such a clueless password.

And the question seems to presume that said clueless administrator would have an
epiphany between the time he did the initial install and when he had to install
the ssh server. Otherwise, I am not sure I see a difference in the two cases.

Denyhosts ignores IPv6 login failures completely.
Since Debian is IPv6-enabled by default, this problem

Bug#541400: gnunet-server: Hangs during purge

2009-08-13 Thread Kurt Roeckx
Package: gnunet-server
Version: 0.8.0c-3
Severity: serious

Hi,

About half of the buildds got stuck building gnunet-fuse during
the purge state of the package gnunet-server.

The process list at that point contains:
root 2971 0.0 0.8 49520 8544 ? SAug11 0:00 /usr/bin/perl -w
/usr/share/debconf/frontend /var/lib/dpkg/info/gnunet-server.postrm purge
root 2973 0.0 0.1 8956 1320 ? SAug11 0:00 /bin/sh
/var/lib/dpkg/info/gnunet-server.postrm purge

Killing one of those makes the process continue.

Note that this is running noninteractivly, so it shouldn't prompt
for anything.

Hi Kees,

LZMA Utils and XZ Utils were both developed by Lasse Collin in
collaboration with Igor Pavlov. Lasse Collin is the maintainer of both
XZ Utils and LZMA Utils, and he only released that code into the
public domain on April 13, 2009 (i.e., recently). Igor Pavlov's code
in the LZMA SDK was released into the public domain in December, 2008.

See xz-utils/AUTHORS, , and XZ Utils
git commit 02ddf09b ("Put the interesting parts of XZ Utils into the
public domain.", 2009-04-13).

Hope that helps,

Out of interest, how do those other OSs mitigate the possibility of a
clueless admin choosing "password" as the root password, and so getting
their box rooted within moments of it going on the net?

While having a task that one needs to opt into seems fair enough, I'm a
little concerned that if we lower the bar too much we'll be adding to
the number of badly secured Debian systems out there.

Any suggestions for ways to protect the clueless from themselves?

Perhaps a variation on the Ubuntu approach of enabling sudo for the
first user, and making PermitRootLogin without-password to at least make
the attacker have to guess the username as well as the password.

That could be made a debconf question, so that people that know what
they're doing can say "I really want to be able to log in as root with
a password" (although I'd question why such a person would think that's
a good idea, since they should be using keys, but at least the debconf
question would shut them up ;-) )

Cheers, Phil.

Bug#540232: xz-utils: undeclared conflict with lzip

Could you clarify why? People who want to deal with both file formats
can install xz-utils at the same time as lzip (they won't conflict);
it's just the compatibility commands in xz-lzma that are in question.
And until lzip 1.8 rc2 is packaged for Debian and this whole problem
disappears, users can install the xz-utils, lzma, and lzip packages
together if they want to have "xz", "lzma" and "lzip" commands
available.

> BTW, there's a problem with the lzdiff man page at least:

Thanks for the heads up --- this was fixed already in the next version
of the packaging. xz-utils in experimental has some problems, since
the packaging files assume a more recent upstream version than was
used. If you have a chance, could you try the latest version from
collab-maint ()?
Or if .dsc/.diff.gz/.deb files would be more convenient, please let me
know and I'll set up a Debian repository.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Thank you very much for this report.

I am fixing the code in my (upstream) repository, will release a new
version of the program (with some extra changes) and will upload a new
package soon.

Bug#541160: #541160 xterm: heap corruption when changing window size

2009-08-13 Thread Thomas Dickey
hmm. It's supposed to work. However, for background: most of the changes
from 244 are restructuring changes (actually, making structs for the index
of line-data). So before, I had something like

unsigned char *a;
unsigned char *b;
unsigned char *c;
unsigned char *d;

and now it's a struct which can have different pointer types than unsigned
char *.

The enable-fifo-lines option turns on/off a modification which lets the
saved-line area be a separate memory buffer from the visible-lines. In turn,
that saved-line area is accessed as a circular buffer.

Because of the way saved-lines and visible-lines were all one array, the new
scheme has several special cases - and up to this point, I've been assuming the
problems lie just in that chunk - particularly since more than half of the code
related to just enable-fifo-lines is in the resizing logic.

However - in that "most of the changes" chunk, it may address memory
differently, and we may be looking for a subscripting error, etc.

If I were able to reproduce this, I'd build xterm using the --enable-trace
option, to see if that gave me more information. Besides writing to
Trace-parent.out the display information, it turns on several assert's
(which may catch the problem a little earlier). There's a little more
trace that could be turned on by #define'ing OPT_TRACE to 2, though I'm
not sure if that's needed. But that's where I'd start - to find
xterm's sizes for the buffer.

Bug#541390: open-iscsi: Incorrect init.d dependency information

2009-08-13 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: open-iscsi
Version: 1.0.485-2
Severity: important
Tags: patch
User: initscripts-ng-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org
Usertags: incorrect-dependency incorrect-provides

With dependency based boot sequencing, I discovered what I believe is
a bug in the init.d script. The dependencies are not correct. The
daemon need /usr/ to be mounted, and thus need to depend on $remote_fs
both during boot and shutdown. Also, the stop-open-iscsi script
depend on open-iscsi, while the open-iscsi script provide iscsi. The
provide need to match the depend, and I suggest renaming the provide
to handle this.

I suspect the stop dependencies on sendsigs and networking for both
init.d scripts are redundant, but failed to understand why they were
listed in the first place and thus left them there.

This patch should solve the issue. Without it, the init.d will start
to early in the boot sequence.

any changes

the changes were mostly about compatibility to other platforms.

Bug#541391: LZMA license inaccuracy

2009-08-13 Thread Kees Cook
Package: xz-utils
Version: 4.999.8beta-1
Severity: serious
User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu karmic

Hello!

It seems that the license of the package needs further examination. It
cannot be Public Domain, since it is derived from the "lzma" package. This
is supported by both http://tukaani.org/lzma/history and the file headers
for things like src/liblzma/lzma/lzma_encoder.c.

So this is not correct:

Files: src/liblzma/*
License: PD
liblzma is in the public domain.

It does appear to be LGPL, so it's not a giant issue, but this package
should be more carefully reviewed for copyright issues.

Thanks,

-Kees

Hi Carl,

developers-reference is currently not very well maintained (and I'm one
of the maintainers ;). That is: patches get applied, but bugs that
require spending a lot of time writing stuff are not usually fixed.

It would be great if you wanted to get involved into
developers-reference maintainance. And yes, the easiest way to do that
is to start providing patches for open bugs. If you need help with
something, just tell me.

Bug#541389: linux-2.6: please enable CONFIG_NUMA_EMU

2009-08-13 Thread Lucas Nussbaum
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.30-5

Hi,

Please enable CONFIG_NUMA_EMU.

CONFIG_NUMA_EMU allows to emulate more memory banks than available on
the system, by splitting the existing memory banks, using the
numa=fake=DESCR command line option. It is very useful together with
cpusets.

Take a machine with 8 CPUs, but only 2 memory banks. It would not be
possible to create 8 cpusets, with an equal amount of memory each,
because memory can only be allocated to cpusets by full memory banks.
Using numa=fake=8*1024, it would be possible to split the 8 GB of RAM
into 8 shares of 1 GB. There's documentation in
Documentation/x86/x86_64/fake-numa-for-cpusets

Thank you,

A strong point in favor of removing it is that we should not mislead
users to software when a better alternative exists. Are there
reasons/use cases where would be better than libgfshare-bin?

However, for this particular package, it might make sense to keep
providing it for a while, since removing it might cause users to lose
the tool to recover their data. Unless -"encrypted" data is
"decryptable" with libgfshare-bin?

Bug#541387: electric-fence: Fix pthread support

2009-08-13 Thread Samuel Thibault
Package: electric-fence
Version: 2.1.14.1

Hello,

The pthread support is currently completely bogus (using getpid() to
identify threads has been bogus since Linux 2.6...). I don't know why
patch 365382 has still not been included, I guess that's because it's
quite intrusive. The attached patch is much less intrusive and should
thus be fine to be applied ASAP.

Thanks,
Samuel

Bug#541386: gnome-power-manager: suspend and hibernate fail without any explanation

2009-08-13 Thread Stefan Monnier
Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 2.24.4-3
Severity: normal

On this machine (an old Macbook Pro), both commands
"hibernate" and "hibernate-ram" can be used successfully (as root)
to hibernate/suspend the machine, but when I try to select either
"Suspend" or "Hibernate" from the power manager applet, all I get is the
screen-lock together with a little sound. No message of any kind that
might help figure out what's going on.

I had the same problem when using gpsbabel 1.3.6. Downgrading gpsbabel
and delete the /tmp/*gtrnctr files makes the plugin working again for me
(after a hint from upstream).

Maybe I should conflict pytrainer with gpsbabel 1.3.6 but then it might
get removed from squeeze because its not installable anymore (no
gpsbabel 1.3.5 available anymore).:(

I had a closer look, and the dependencies should also list $syslog, as

It's libSDL fault. I submited a bug (#541365) with a patch.

That's good to know. Could you please add that information to
setupcon(1)? Even if the kernel doesn't permit a non-privileged user to
change the keymap, he can do it at least with sudo/su.

I don't blame you. Writing documentation is always a PITA.

for such usage, it's better to use the MAILTO environnement variable

Regarding this bug, unless upstream developer decides to add local
delivery, i think i will tag it 'wontfix'.

I'm going to include it in the next upload but this should really have
been discussed with upstream first... but Martin Quinson did not manage to
work on the new upstream version in a timely fashion and the relation with
upstream needs more love than what I can afford to put into this package.

@lxde-settings-daemon

BTW, you can check packages I used on this PPA :
https://edge.launchpad.net/~gilir/+archive/backports?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=karmic

It didn't include the workaround for the config file issue, so
installing them should generate the bug.

python-multiprocessing is a separate package from python 2.6, that's a
backport for python 2.5 and 2.4 of 'multiprocessing' module available
in python 2.6. It's already in sid/squeeze, and you can use it right
away.

And this may be too complex for a short term (lzip won't ship lzdiff

The lzma format is obsolete anyway. And the future is zutils.

Solution 3 is OK, IMHO.

BTW, there's a problem with the lzdiff man page at least:

The change needed is rather trivial and should be easily backported.
The commit is 8bc3477690728ec2c61e8240b63df15b06de933a.

It replaces the two occurences of the string '=*=PROVIDED=*=' in
lib/Sbuild/Build.pm with '~*=PROVIDED=*=' (The first '=' is replaced
with '~').

I hope this increases the chances for fixing it sooner.

Thanks!

No, this won't work; what we're considering to do is force python-gtk2
and python-vte to be present to make Gtk+ gui working.

Ddrescue already shows the name of the pass being performed (each pass

Ok, so they should have done proper fix to support this. I'll wait for
next upstream release and report a bug if there is still the problem.

Bug#532757: Stripped debug info breaks erlang-dialyzer

I know that dialyzer and debugger don't work when the debug info is
stripped from beam files.

The idea of removing debug info was to reduce the size of the packages
making them more usable in embedded environment and fit small-size
media (needed for UbuntuOne project).

So, now I'm a bit unsure which way to prefer - restore debug info in
beams or leave dialyzer and debugger broken. Building set of -dbg
packages (installable simultaneously) seem to be too complicated
(technically it's possible to point erlang root to an alternative
directory, but it'd be hard to make other packages installed to
/usr/lib/erlang/lib work with that setup).

Cheers!

Bug#541296: migrationtools: migrate_services.pl generates invalid entry for tcp/udp echo

On Wed, Aug 12, 2009 at 10:18:30PM -0700, Mike Castle wrote:

Incorrect: No data was actually *lost*, right?

I think it's correct. After all the definition is:

'causes non-serious data loss', """causes the loss of data on the system
that is unimportant, or restorable without resorting to backup media"""

Granted, I ran migrationtools once, two years ago. And now, trying to
upgrade slapd caused there to be no ldap server running, because the
data is invalid. As a result, I ended up with an ldap server with no
data in it. Seemed lost to me. Sure, it was there in /var/backups.
But it did involve a restore process that seems to imply the final
clause there.

migrationtools did not hide your data, slapd did!

If package A contains "test -e /arrrgh && rm -rf /home" and package B
contains "touch arrrgh" then package B does not have a grave bug.

What you describe above is slapd upgrade script dropping (or hiding)
your data when containing syntactic errors. If you find that behaviour
a grave bug, then file a bugreort against that package.

migrationtools generating bogus ldif data is *not* a grave bug.
Tolerating bogus ldif data and then later being more strict might be
(but as you said the data was not exactly lost - and I suspect that
slapd kindly asked you if you wanted to do the upgrade).

Please do not discuss slapd behaviour any further here - only
migrationtools behaviour.

The fix for bug#307618 actually introduced another issue.  Any
system that used migrationtools to load services will be unable to
upgrade to slapd 2.4.17-1 (actually, anything newer than 2.4.15).
Reference bug#541292 for details.  But essentially,
`cn=echo+ipServiceProtocol=tcp+ipServiceProtocol=udp' is an illegal
value.

At first glance, it seems that replacing the + with _ allows the
file to load, but I'm not sure if that's sufficient for everything
to work properly.  I don't know if this dn: is used or just needs to
be unique.

In principle they are unique, but I suspect that most users of
migrationtools won't actually use that data.

I will simply disable that patch for now, and leave it to the user to
decide if they want to a) use only some of the scripts og b)
force-load with the result that tcp and udp entries are merged.

A force load that results in the same string will never work in the
long run. Better to give them the ability to have a valid string.

You are free to have that opinion. You would then choose a) above :-)

Maybe instead of `+' use `_and_' ?

I dislike inventing pseudo-separators. I thought I was clever
discovering that "+" separator but learned a lesson here.

Kind regards,

 - Jonas
