Bug#440274:

2008-03-03 Thread Tim Richardson
On my ADSL connection, the bandwidth control works as expected.
Possibly, this bug is only present on very high bandwidth connections
I challenge the severity grave since the package is not rendered
unusable for people on normal domestic broadband connections, who are
the target of this simple traffic shaping script.

Tagging grave makes it an RC bug which is stopping a newer version
from entering testing.

Bug#469359: file-roller fails to add .jar to tar archive

2008-03-04 Thread tim richardson
Package: file-roller
Version: 2.20.3-1
Severity: important

When adding a jar file to a tar archive, file-roller stops adding files
with the error message

tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

The bug also manifests for tar derivatives such as .tar.gz

this bug is probably a dup of other bugs, but this report is more
specific.
I have reported the bug upstream and will set forwarded

To reproduce:

1. Open file-roller
2. Make a new tar archive
3. Add to the archive a .jar file

2008-03-05 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: gnome-power-manager

the power-manager applet has a power history graph.
It reports power usage values that appear to be 50% of what
powertop reports.
So if powertop says I am using 10W, the graph shows 5W.

Bug#430599:

2008-02-19 Thread Tim Richardson
Version: 1:2.4.0~rc1-2

I was able to reproduce this bug yesterday in sid in the 2.4.0 RC1
version.
Thanks for looking at this, I think since it affects assistive
technologies, it should be prioritised. It is an old bug.

I tried to use the Version pseudo-header to indicate this, but
apparently I didn't make it work.

Bug#466679: hal: D420 laptop does not power off backlight on AC+docked with default BIOS settings

2008-02-20 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: hal
Version: 0.5.10-5
Severity: normal

My Dell D420 does not turn off the screen when it is on AC AND docked to
the media base AND the BIOS settings regarding priority of video card
are default.

docked and on battery: it works.
undocked and on AC, it works.
There is an easy fix.
To fix it, change the BIOS setting to use onboard video.
The media-base is a mini-docking station and does not have a video card,
but it does enable an external monitor using DVI to be attached.

I guess this is linked to HAL.

I wanted to document it somewhere
because other Dell D420 users may come across it.

Bug#467224: dbus reinstall gets rc2.d priority wrong, stops hal

2008-02-23 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: dbus

Severity: important

I reinstalled dbus. It set up /etc/rc2.d/S50dbus

and hal does not start unless dbus is running
A default lenny install makes
/etc/rc2.d/S20dbus

Bug#467633: gnome-power-manager: dim screen on idle does not work Dell D420

2008-02-26 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 2.20.2-3
Severity: normal

The screen dims correctly when going to and from battery power.
However, the dim screen on idle does not work.
I have idle time = 1 minute on Gnome screensaver, and no screensaver active
Then for AC and battery settings in GPM, I have dim screen when idle checked.
I expect that the screen will dim after one minute of idleness.
But the screen brightness does not change.

large deletions from Trash and rescane the filesystem.

Refresh didn't work either. I had to restart baobab.

Bug#470452: closed by Sven Arvidsson [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Fixed in 2.22)

2008-03-26 Thread Tim Richardson
Sven,
I prefer to close my reports when I can confirm that the bug is fixed,
which I have not yet been able to do. I reported the bug upstream
myself, so I am aware of the claim that it is fixed. You have closed the
Debian bug without confirming yourself that it is fixed; I don't think
this is a sound way to proceed. I am not sure that the packages have
actually migrated to unstable yet (I have a machine that runs unstable
but because I am moving countries it is packed away for a couple more
weeks; a few days ago I checked the status of gnome 2.22: the packages
where in experimental still). If this is true, it means you have closed
a bug that is still actually present in the main Debian repositories,
and it's hard for me to see how this is correct. I'm a fairly new Debian
user, so perhaps I have something to learn here, but imagine if you did
this to a Release Candidate bug!

I do from time to time close other people's bugs, but only after I have
verified that the problem is fixed and it is clear that the original
reporter is not going to close it. To be honest, I don't think it is
good practice to close someone else's report without even verifying a
rumoured upstream fix :-)

It is my intention to reopen the bug because I run reports on my open
bugs to keep on top of them, and a closed bug will not be picked up by
my review process. But I will wait for your feedback, since I am new
here.

regards

Tim

2008-03-26 Thread Tim Richardson
Sven,
thanks for the explanation. It's clear and thanks for your patience. I
should have checked the version against package.debian.org to see that
the new upstream has migrated to unstable.
Thanks for verifying it as well, rather than just trusting upstream.
It's a matter of judgement. I swapped to Debian from Ubuntu because the
quality control of Debian is high, so I'm a verifier.

Bug#610671: jedit crashes on startup

2011-01-21 Thread Tim Richardson

Install openjdk-6-jre, probably you just installed
openjdk-6-jre-headless which doesn't include libraries for graphic
applications.

Otherwise, given you set sun-java you might want to try java-wrappers
0.1.17 from experimental which also considers jvm set by
java-alternatives.

installing

openjdk-6-jre

fixed the problem, thanks. I'll leave the report open, maybe you want
to take some further action? Let me know if I can help.

Libreoffice crashes when opening the contextual menu over a wrongly spelled
word in impress. I attach the report generated by bug buddy.

Try upgrading libhunspell-1.2.0 to the version in experimental. For me,
it hasn't crashed since (a few hours of use).

Bug#616510: kdm or xserver crashes intermittently but often when interacting with screen saver unlock dialog

2011-03-04 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: kdm
Version: 4:4.4.5-8
Severity: important

Sorry about the broad subject. I'll describe what happens, maybe someone can
help me work out where it should be reported.

I got frequent crashes when the screen saver is running and I interact with the
unlock dialog.
This can happen in a resume from suspend or hibernate, but just now I clicked
cancel on the unlock dialog and the xsession crashed. Because this causes data
loss in open applications, I mark this important.
The bug has been happening for two weeks, more or less.

The kdm log reports segmentation faults so I report it against kdm first.

It's a laptop with intel graphics.
The kernel is sidux.

Bug#558038: (no subject)

2011-03-07 Thread Tim Richardson
In Libreoffice 3.3.1, the wizard to create a new table recognises the
column as a date if the recognise button is used, which is a good
enough workaround.

However, the lack of type recognition means append data still fails.

my upstream report (submitted by bugbuddy; I have gnome-dbg installed) is

Bug#505270: splashy fails at boot: Couldn't splashy_start_splash error -10

2008-11-29 Thread tim richardson

  Connection refused.
  Couldn't splashy_start_splash. Error -10

Reading the code a -10 error seems to indicate a problem with fonts. Are you
 using the default theme/font?

On all machines, only the default theme is used. The package with extra
themes is not installed.

After booting what do you see if you launch splashy test? (hit esc to quit)

sudo splashy test works well.

Some more info:
On the laptop I am writing this on, the boot image very briefly appears,
and then disappears with the error message. At each change of run level,
the Connection Refused message is generated.

On my desktop, I get the -10 error message and connection refused only
once. The next run level change starts splashy successfully.

I think the error 10 is not really a font issue.
Earlier in the bug report I posted a workaround I stumbled upon while
looking in the directfb code: the creation of /etc/directfbrc and adding
a path to the debug file. As soon as I follow those steps, splashy works
normally at boot.

I tested Lenny RC1 installer by making a new virtual machine. Splashy in
this perfectly new installation works fine. So I wonder if something is
not upgrading properly in the startup scripts despite purging and
resinstalling.

Bug#558240: openoffice.org-base: use of mysql native client crashes Base

2009-11-27 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: openoffice.org-base
Version: 1:3.1.1-8
Severity: normal

Attempting to do a native MySQl connection to localhost crashes base.
Mysql v 5.1.41

To replicate:
Create a new Base document. Connect to existing database. Choose MySQl and then
choose native driver. Enter username and database name details, and proceed to
test connection. Testing the connection crashes Base

I reported this upstream but they suggested to report it in Debian .

Bug#558240: followup

2009-11-27 Thread Tim Richardson
Hi Rene.
Yes, the server is reachable. I successfully fall back to a jdbc connection.
I get this on two servers; one local and therefore using the latest sid
packages, but one on my webhoster which is a slightly older version of mysql.
So it's not mysql dependant.

I've had my experiences with upstream before, but in this case the feedback
was not reproducible (on XP).

I can reproduce it every time connecting to either server.
In more detail, here's what I do

First, verification of reachability:
1. start Base, connect to an existing server.
2. Choose Mysql, and then from the next step, choose JDBC
3. Enter the username name, require password, and test connection.
This works.

Repeat but this time choose native driver in step 2.
After the password dialog is completed, crash.

Same for my localhost server.

 Thanks,
s2ram doesn't work. s2ram --force also doesn't work. It's not a
permission problem. The error is machine not found.

However, the laptop happily suspends either with the hotkey, or when
invoked from gnome (ie by power settings, or from system-shutdown and
then choosing suspend).

I have the same situation on a sid desktop. It suspends great via gnome,
but once again, not via s2ram (it never suspended when I was using
Ubuntu 8.04, so I am delighted about this).

I have tried hard but I've never understood how gnome does suspend.
If I could work that out, could I configure gdm to call an alternate
script?

When I look at /usr/share/pm-utils/defaults
I see that everything is commented out; the comments in file indicate
that this means the kernel is managing suspend.

 Thanks,
The answer is
/usr/sbin/pm-suspend

which I found in my own contribution to the wiki.debian.org entry for
suspend

Perhaps this should be the default? It solved the problem on the two
computers I've tested it on so far.

Bug#503085:

2008-10-22 Thread Tim Richardson
To be clear, I fixed this problem by
1) logout so you see the login screen
2) click options (the button which lets you configure the login
screen; but on some themes, you go to Actions and find Configure the
login manager
3) enter root password
4) on the General tab, there is a button edit commands (bottom right)
5) edit the Command Suspend command to be /usr/sbin/pm-suspend

optional: Edit one of the custom commands to implement hibernate. The
path is /usr/sbin/pm-hibernate

6) Apply command changes

Bug#503141: Cannot change custom_0 label when adding command to gdm actions list

2008-10-22 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: gdm
Version: 2.20.7-3
Severity: minor

used the Custom command 0 to add a hibernate option to the gdm login window.
My changes to the Label, LRLabel and Tooltip are ignored, although I can change
the Path.

To reproduce

1) from the login prompt, choose configure login manager and edit commands
2) chage Command type Custom command 0
3) edit a path to activate the option (eg /usr/sbin/pm-hibernate)
4) Change the label text away from the default Custom_0
5) Apply command changes

Now observe the a new command is added to the action menu, but it is called
Custom_0

Severity: normal

1) add a custom command to gdm login that calls hibernate
path: /usr/sbin/pm-hibernate
give it the label Hibernate
2) restart gdm or reboot to make the label change take effect

3) from the login screen, execute the new Hibernate command

gdm stops.
Messages like this appear on the console
gdm[3927] Glib-critical: g_hash_table_lookup_extended: assertion 'hash_table !=

Bug#503143: A clue

2008-10-23 Thread Tim Richardson
I hope this helps:

If I modify the builtin suspend command to be /usr/sbin/pm-hibernate
then hibernation works perfectly.

But when I put that into a custom command, the crash occurs.
So customs commands somehow work differently to the built in Suspend
command.

in the Edit Command dialog.

You can verify this in the file
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf

At the end of the file, you should see something like

Bug#503723: hplip: python /usr/bin/hp-systray at 100% CPU for ever

2008-10-27 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: hplip
Version: 2.8.6.b-3
Severity: important

ome minutes after logging in to gnome, I see 100% CPU for
python /usr/bin/hp-systray

I've been using hplip for a long time; this is a recent problem.

It stays at 100% until I kill it.

I have an HP printer connected via USB which is shared by caps.
It is reproducible every time I log in.

I don't know how to provide more useful information, but will gladly
investigate if I get some hints.

I can't reproduce this anymore.
I went back to the testing version, couldn't reproduce (as I expected),
reinstalled the sid version, and can't reproduce it anymore, which I did
not expect. So it's a useless bug report.

Upstream says it won't be fixed until the next major release after
2.0.4.

Here is a hack fix I've made to at least protect from data loss.

create /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00virtualBox and make it executable

put this in the script. I have hardcoded for the only VM I care about,
and you need to run it as the user who runs the virtual machine.

Obviously very ugly, but does the job.

Bug#570570: openoffice.org-calc: zoom slider control not rendering in KDE 4.3.4

2010-02-19 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: openoffice.org-calc
Version: 1:3.2.0-1
Severity: normal

The zoom slider (bottom right) is not rendering properly for me. That is, the
control is not visible when a spreadsheet is initially open. Grabbing with the
mouse in this area of the screen reveals the control.
The control remains visible until various actions cause a redraw.
For example, sometimes switching worksheets makes the control disappear.
Or saving the document (this always makes the control disappear).

Bug#504354: Can't recreate default /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

2008-11-02 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: gdm
Version: 2.20.7-4
Severity: normal

Because of the recent gdm chagnes, I want to revert to the packages latest
default gdm.conf
I moved my customised /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
and ran
dpkg-reconfigure gdm
but this did not create /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
-phigh also did not work.
Reinstalling the package via synaptic also failed to create the file.

gdmsetup also doesn't make a gdm.conf. It give assertion failed errors when
starting, such as
GLib-CRITICAL: g_key_file_set_string: assertion `key_file != NULL' failed

I don't know if /etc/gdm/gdm.conf is needed since life goes on without it.
However, it's provided by the package and it seems odd to me that I can't
recreate it.

To reproduce:
1. move /etc/gdm/gdm.conf to /etc/gdm/gdm.conf_bak
2. dpkg-reconfigure gdm does not recreate the file
3. synatpic reinstall does not create the file
4. gdmsetup and make changes: does not recreate the file.

Bug#504389: splashy stops the shutdown process; ALT-F8 lets it resume

2008-11-03 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: splashy
Version: 0.3.10-2.1
Severity: important

Sorry, but I think 0.3.10-2.1 introduces a bug
Shutdown stops after gdm terminates.
You can not log in even to virtual terminals.
ALT-F8 shows a screen with splashy. After pressing ALT-F8, splashy starts and
the shutdown proceeds.

I have one machine still with 0.3.10-2 and this problem does not exist.

Bug#504389: gdm

2008-11-03 Thread Tim Richardson
By forcing gdm back to 2.20.7-3
splashy works as expected.
So splashy doesn't work with gdm 2.20.7-4 at least on my two Intel-based
laptops.

However, on a desktop, with gdm 2.20.7-4, splashy works well.

Bug#504428: /usr/sbin/gdmsetup: gdmsetup is not useful if /etc/gdm/gdm.conf does not exist

2008-11-03 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: gdm
Version: 2.20.7-4
Severity: normal
File: /usr/sbin/gdmsetup

if /etc/gdm/gdm.conf does not exist then gdmsetup reports a lot of errors to
console and can't save any settings.

That is, changes made in gdmsetup are not preserved, if you exit and restart it.
gdmsetup saves its changes in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf as far as I can tell

I think correct behaviour should be to restore a default /etc/gdm/gdm.conf if
one does not exist.

It's surprisingly difficult to restore the default gdm with package management
tools since dpkg-reconfigure gdm doesn't work, and reinstalling the package
from synaptic doesn't help either.

Bug#504389:

2008-11-03 Thread Tim Richardson
Restoring patch 52 to pre-2.20-7-3 version works.

With the 2.20-7-4 patch ( splashy) gdm doesn't seem to stop properly.
Something else in the shutdown process kills it and the machine will
reboot/shutdown without user intervention if splashy is not used, but if
splashy is used the vt8 is never activated until the user manually does
it via a keyboard action.

Could you revert the changes to patch 52?

I of course have no idea why I only see this bug only on my two
intel-based laptops and not on a Sid virtual machine or on a AMD/nvidia
desktop; I just mention that in case there are problems reproducing this
report.

Bug#504389:

2008-11-04 Thread Tim Richardson
Notes:
1) from the login window, rebooting and shutdown works as expected.
Splashy is invoked.

2) after doing /etc/init.d/gdm stop, this process remains gconfd-2
I've ignored this. bt didn't look interesting.

3) after logging in and rebooting via the gdm System menu, the reboot
stops. Here is a one of those annoying non-developer guesses: It appears
that gdm is waiting for splashy (?), and patch 52 perhaps stops
terminations of gdm that used to happen from the reboot process? For
some reason on intel graphics, splashy is waiting for vt8 to be
activated, but this block doesn't happen on non-intel video hardware
such as virtual machines or nvidia.

Virtual terminal 1 shows nothing at all, just a blank screen with a
flashing cursor.

One of the virtual terminals shows output from the shutdown.
INIT: Switching to runlevel: 6
INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal [ok]
* Stopping GNOME Display manger gdm [ok]

and no more activity.

(switching to vt8 wakes up splashy and the reboot continues. )

3a) However, after logging in, starting a gnome terminal and doing
sudo reboot
the reboot works correctly

4) I attached gdb to gdm after logging in. From gdm I restarted via the
System menu, as usual.
Control comes back to gdm at various points; I kept doing continue
because I don't know what I am looking for.
And the restart worked; that is, the terminal was auto switched to vt8
and splashy ran. Twice it happened, so while using gdb, I can't
reproduce it.

This is actually interesting. I also have an intel-based laptop, and
during the shutdown process it does not switch to the VT where the
shutdown messages are displayed, while this works on my ATI machine.
Maybe there’s something else going on with the X server.

 Thanks,

Do you see that behaviour in the previous version of gdm?

Bug#504604:

2008-11-06 Thread Tim Richardson
In the launchpad bug report (the link above) there is a discussion about
why OOo now behaves like this. I understood from this discussion that
upstream deliberate made this change for improved Excel compatibility.
I'm an experienced Excel user, and I certainly expect Excel to behave
the way OOo now does. OOo 3 (the release version) behaves the same way
as the Lenny OOo package as far as I can tell (I'm using the Debian
packages in experimental, which work great). So your request to move
Lenny to v3 won't change the functionality.

If the above doesn't make sense or is incorrect, then please help by
clarifying the differences between your report and the launchpad
discussion.

Also, I don't see what the data loss is. This functionality change
doesn't actually change anything in your document, as I understand it.
Are you sure that it qualifies as a grave bug?

regards

Tim

Bug#504604:

2008-11-09 Thread Tim Richardson
I'm still trying to understand the report:

My suggestion woyld be to have an option where the user can choose that
string values when present in an arithmetic formula are
   a. evaluated as real ( so 1.2+3 equals 4.2)
   b. evaluated as integer ( so 1.2+3 equals 4 )
   c. evaluated as zero so ( so 1.2+3 equals 3 )
   d. evaluated as an error
Since excel has one of these behaviour

Excel gives #VALUE errors for cell C1 when
A1 contains 1.2 (that is if the literal contents is 5 characters 1.2)
B1 contains 1
C1 contains =A1+B1

So does OpenOffice 3 in Debian (Debian packages) (Error 529)
So does OpenOffice 2.4 in Debian (Sid) (Error 529)

But OpenOffice 3 in Windows (the OpenOffice.org build) gives a value of 1
(Option C above)

Personally, I am alarmed that OpenOffice 3 in Windows behaves like this.

Bug#504803: workaround: use sudo mode

2008-11-09 Thread Tim Richardson
The bug only occurs when gksu uses su to launch apps.
Using sudo doesn't show the bug.

Therefore, a workaround:

1) enable sudo for your user (as root, do visudo and copy the existing
privilege for the root user (near the end of the file), substituting
your userid)

2) as your user, run gconf-editor, go to apps- gksu and turn on
sudo-mode

Now, launched apps will have the focus.

Bug#505270: Bug occurs on my desktop as well

2008-11-11 Thread Tim Richardson
I was wrong when I said this bug doesn't occur on my non-intel desktop.
It uses a local repository and was slower to upgrade to the 0.3.12-1

Since splashy fails to start on all three machines on which I run sid, I
I will mark this as grave.

Bug#505270: a workaround .

2008-11-13 Thread Tim Richardson
In the process of trying to debug this, I discovered that I can make it
boot properly if I create the file
/etc/directfbrc

and include this one line in the file

log-file=/tmp/directfb.log

I had no directfbrc file on my system.
An empty file doesn't help.

My attempt to make the log file was to capture output of the
macroDFBCHECK

but it doesn't seem to work.

I hope this is helpful to someone who knows directfb well.

Bug#487414: Better patch; no change to theme.xml

2009-02-02 Thread Tim Richardson
At request of the maintainers, I resubmit the patch.
No change to theme.xml
The existing tag
textbox/enable
now has a new meaning (or a restored meaning).
If it is yes, then the textbox starts at boot.
If it is no, the text box is not started automatically.

Key F2 toggles the text box in both cases.

Reuse of the existing tag forced me to include in this patch a better
fix for the crash-on-F2 bug #473230
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=473230

Note: F2 stops working about 25% of the way during the boot. After this
point (mounting of the real root filesystem) splashy gets disconnected
from the keyboard so the textbox state can not be changed.

This problem is not related to the patch.

Bug#541814: openoffice.org: Go-OO for Windows allows 2^20 rows in calc (approx 1 million), why not the Debian build?

2009-08-16 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: openoffice.org
Version: 1:3.1.0-5
Severity: wishlist

The Go-OO website says that the Debian build of openoffice.org is based on the
Go-OO code.
On Windows, Go-OO allows 1 million rows in Calc.
(I haven't put this to the test much, I have to admit). Is there a reason why
Debian doesn't follow the Windows build?

Bug#529593: scribus-ng: with metacity compositing_manager on, bad screen artifacts at startup make scribus unusable

2009-05-20 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: scribus-ng
Version: 1.3.5.dfsg~svn20090208-2
Severity: normal

to reproduce:
1) use gconf-editor to turn on the metacity option composting_manager
2) start scribus-ng

observed:
the top left corner of the startup splash logo does not fully disappear,
but kind of captures the top left of my screen, when then stays in front of all
other windows.

I am using testing's nvidia drivers on this computer.
This might be an nvidia problem. My other computers use intel, but they
also have newer X versions.

I don't have problems with other applications.

Bug#530744: network-manager: connecting to mobile broadband with Huawei E220 kills keyboard and mouse

2009-05-27 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: network-manager
Version: 0.7.1-1
Severity: important

I have a mobile broadband connection configured with the network-manager
applet.
Connecting from the applet kills my keyboard and mouse completely (I have to
force a power off and reboot)

This happens every time, on two laptops. On one laptop I get kerneloops
messages sometimes.

Connecting with the old gnome-ppp causes no problems.
It happens both when there is a roaming wireless connection, and when there is
nno wireless connection

steps to replicate:
boot laptop.
click on the applet icon, choose the broadband connection and connect
About five seconds later, as the connection tries to establish, mouse and
keyboad die. The connection icon continue to animate as if it is trying to
establish a connection. A connection is never established.

When did this start happening? I can't be very specfic, sorry. It was working a
couple of weeks ago.

It happens with kernel 2.6.29-2 and 2.6.29-1

Bug#505270:

2008-12-30 Thread Tim Richardson
v 03.13 shows the same behaviour as 0.3.12. That is, splashy doesn't
work with the same error messages.

Also, the /tmp/directfbrc hack fixes it just the same.

I wonder why there was so much confidence that a fix was found. Have the
developers managed to reproduce the bug yet on their own systems?
Unfortunately, I can't get a virtual machine to show this bug, only my
three real machines.

I'd be more than happy to test any proposed fixes before they are
packaged. I'm trying to follow development via the mailing list, now I
will try to learn IRC.

If the Lenny deep freeze is just around the corner, I suggest using my
mysterious fix (the /tmp/directfbfc fix documented earlier in this bug
report) while we work out what is really happening because at least then
this bug could be closed.

see that such a directory does exist.

Point 1: On the laptop I am using, this is 100% reproducible

Point 2: As soon as I introduce the /etc/directfbrc file with the
contents as described above, the second call to CreateFont succeeds.
The message is loaded default implementation of IDirectFBFont

Bug#505270:

2009-01-04 Thread Tim Richardson
Neil,
hi. I'm the original reporter, although by now I think it is clear that
many people see this bug. For me, it is 100% reproducible.

I only use stock Lenny i386 kernels, and I don't have /usr on a separate
partition. I certainly use initramfs, since I'm using a stock kernel.

I reproduce this on a laptop with a completely reinstalled lenny/sid
(separate /home partition). I repeat that I in fact see this problem on
all three of my machines, all of which are using standard lenny i386
installs, none of them with a separate /usr partition.

Agree that it is not reproducible on virtual machines.

I've put some more info about the bug at comment 161, the result of some
hours of work on my part. I have narrowed down where the bug is
happening quite specifically. directfb complains that it can't find one
of its standard directories.

Clearly this is do with changes after splashy 0.3.10, when this bug did
not occur. I suppose the significant change is the move of the script to
local-premount. Some people report intermittent problems. The workaround
may work simply because of timing changes (according to directfb
developers).

I suppose there is no chance that the initramfs is unmounted while the
splashy script is running?

Bug#505270: A solution

2009-01-05 Thread Tim Richardson
Thanks to #splashy and Mattkijs Kooijman, we have a solution.

It's not a very good solution, but it proves we know what the problem
is:

The solution is to delay the init process for one or two seconds after
splashy boot

ie change /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-premount/splashy
and add
sleep 2 #smaller values probably work

so that the code looks like

grep -q '\(VESA\|VGA\)' /proc/fb || exit

/sbin/splashy boot
sleep 2 #smaller values probably work

The problem (my theory)

the splashy scripts forks and exits quickly, while its child process
does the work of initialising directfb.
This fast exit of splashy lets the init process continue. (thanks
Matthijs)

On my computers, and other computers, this sets up a race condition.
It seems that initramfs is being unmounted while the splashy children
are working to setup directfb.
directfb finds that the file system has gone by the time the call to
CreatFont happens.

This is probably only a matter of milliseconds. In v 3.10, the earlier
start of splashy boot avoided this problem.

The workaround hack to set up a directfb log file also probably causes
enough of a delay to avoid the problem (as guessed by directfb
developers)

A sleep in local-premount at the end of the splashy script is a crude
mechanism to buy enough time for the child process to finish its
initialisation of directfb

Bug#510564: this should not be grave

2009-01-05 Thread Tim Richardson
The original launchpad report doesn't mention data loss, but it does
indicate a bug in Nautilus which causes 'inconvenience'. However,
Windows users probably have similar but not identical problems.

According to that report
1. NTFS is case-sensitive, so the underlying file system is case
sensitive.
2. below, an interesting part of the launchpad entry:

 1) Mount a remote NTFS Windows share (I am using CIFS at /etc/fstab).
 2) Create a file named 123.abc in this volume (touch, gedit,
 whatever).
 3) Open Nautilus and select the mounted volume in the left panel.
 4) In the right panel, locate the file you have just created in Step
 2.
 5) Right click over the file and select rename. Try to rename it to
 123.ABC.

Nautilus will tell you there already is a file with that name, which
is not true because the mounted volume is not FAT but NTFS (case
 sensitive).

Alternatively, use Nautilus to access the NTFS share using a smb://
address and try to perform Steps 4 and 5: It will work.

 Regards,
 Effenberg

The Nautilus bug is shared by Windows apps, apparently:

From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/100625

In NTFS, you can create unique file names, stored in the same
directory, that differ only in case. For example, the following
filenames can coexist in one directory on an NTFS volume:
 CASE.TXT
 case.txt
 case.TXT
However, if you attempt to open one of these files in a Win32
application, such as Notepad, you would only have access to one of the
files, regardless of the case of the filename you type in the Open
 File dialog box.

Other inconsistencies also exist. The Windows NT Command Prompt and
File Manager correctly display the names of the files. However, normal
commands, such as COPY, fail when you attempt to access one or more
filenames that differ only in case.

This is not a grave bug, I think. I use remotedly mounted Windows drives
frequently at work, and haven't noticed this (I never expect NTFS drives
to be case sensitive).

Bug#505270: a better solution

2009-01-05 Thread Tim Richardson
I've made a version of splashy which uses a signal to exit rather than
wait a whole second in the local-premount script. I'll test it more
thoroughly tonight my time and then send patches.

Bug#510564: Easy fix: modify the case-sensitive setting of the samba share

2009-01-05 Thread Tim Richardson
I just noticed that this Debian bug refers to ext3 shares mounted via
Samba, whereas the Ubuntu launchpad discussion is about NTFS shares.

The debian report (above) is correct with the default settings for a
samba share.

However, the correct behaviour is easily reached: modify the samba share
so that the case-senstive parameter is set to true. This allows file.txt
and file.TXT to be two separate files.

I tested this with two Debian machines: a Lenny server and a Lenny
client. I administer samba with swat. Using swat, the case-senstive
setting is under advanced options for the share.

The default setting is auto which causes the potential data-loss bug.

Bug#505270: my patch (a fast way to deal with this bug)

2009-01-05 Thread Tim Richardson
As indicated already, please consider this patch for the next version of
splashy. It replaces the sleep in the script, and only holds up init for
the time necessary (certainly less than 0.5 s and perhaps only 0.1 s)

Bug#505270: Delay

2009-01-06 Thread Tim Richardson
I think a delay of 1 second is probably five times too long even in
worst cases, but if I didn't make mistakes in the code, it won't matter
because a signal will arrive quickly.

Slower machines don't necessarily make the race condition more likely to
occur.

The window of error is only the execution of a few lines of code.
This bug was triggered simply by moving from inittop to premount.
Milliseconds of difference.
