The way to the next dpkg release
Hi. I've now committed the current release 1.13.11.1 to svn+ssh://svn.debian.org/svn/dpkg/trunk which we will use as a preparation ground for the next upload. Guillem, Christian, Brendan and I have been added to the Alioth project and should have commit access. I like to point the commit messages somewhere, either the existing [EMAIL PROTECTED] or a list set up via the Alioth project. Currently I send them to [EMAIL PROTECTED] but I've yet to see a mail arriving from there in my inbox so I'm not sure it is indeed working... I propose the following timeline for the next release: Commit patches until Sunday January, 22th (5 days from now). This should give plenty of time to at least work through the backlog some of us have aquired (My own one can be seen at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/[EMAIL PROTECTED];tag=fixed-in-my-arch-branch). Give a few days of testing at the beginning of next week. Upload around Thursday January, 26th. Comments, objections? P.S. It might be good to read http://www.dpkg.org/ArchRepository/CommittingChanges as a reminder about changelog formats before commiting. I'm not entirely sure that I'm going to have time, so I'm a little hesitant to be volunteering, but since the details may help someone else even if I turn out not to have the time One of the difficulties that I see with dpkg at the moment is that it has a very large bug list. Many of those bugs are very old, the use of tags is sometimes different from bug to bug, and the database could probably use either a good set of usertags or some bug title massaging (or possibly both). I've been looking a little for a package to do bug triage on when I have the time, and this always looked like an excellent target if I had some guidelines as to what the maintainers wanted. Now seems like a great opportunity to come up with some guidelines so that some of the rest of us can pitch in and start getting the bug list down to something more reasonable. So, any general thoughts on a bug policy? Use of confirmed / patch / etc? Categories of bugs that we should create with usertags? -- Russ Allbery ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Many of those bugs are very old, the use of tags is sometimes different from bug to bug, and the database could probably use either a good set of usertags or some bug title massaging (or possibly both). This is not exactly true. Scott did a huge amount fo bug triaging. He had his own ways to do so and I even imagine he documented them. Something may be lying around on www.dpkg.org...otherwise we'll ask him whether he has something written. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? As I suppose the purpose of dh_perl is not to have the maintainer check the output of dh_perl to decide what to put in the changelog, I suppose something is missing. - maybe it should still add perl-base ? Bug#317082: Not just a dpkg bug
On Thu, Jan 19, 2006 at 12:14:35AM +0100, Frank Lichtenheld wrote: If we don't use the path information from ldd there are several ways to go: 1) use dpkg --search but only with the library name from objdump, not with the full path. Questions: - Are there cases where the library name from objdump isn't actually the filename of the library? - How do we decide wether a found file is really a usable library? (parse /etc/ld.so.conf?) Note that this method is used in the patch for #285857 which I'm currently evaluating for inclusion. So it seems the answer to question 1 is no (or else the patch in #285857 is useless) and the answer to question 2 is most likely it is listed in the shlibs file of the corresponding package which might have been the sense of Nikita's explanation of buggy packages that don't list their libs in their shlibs will need to be fixed that I just don't got. But now I definetly need some sleep before I can wind my head around more of that dpkg-shlibdeps code... Bug#317082: Not just a dpkg bug
Frank Lichtenheld [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: This isn't quite true I think. The current dpkg-shlibdeps code works like this: 1) use ldd binary to find the paths to the linked libraries 2) use objdump -p binary to actually check which of this libraries are listed as NEEDED (Are there cases where ldd lists libraries that are not NEEDED?) Yes. ldd will list all shared libraries pulled in by a binary, regardless of whether they're NEEDED by the binary itself or just NEEDED by one of the shared libraries it uses. For example: windlord:~ ldd /usr/bin/remctl linux-gate.so.1 = (0xe000) libgssapi_krb5.so.2 = /usr/lib/libgssapi_krb5.so.2 (0xb7f8e000) libc.so.6 = /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0xb7e57000) libkrb5.so.3 = /usr/lib/libkrb5.so.3 (0xb7ddf000) libk5crypto.so.3 = /usr/lib/libk5crypto.so.3 (0xb7dbb000) libcom_err.so.2 = /lib/libcom_err.so.2 (0xb7db8000) libkrb5support.so.0 = /usr/lib/libkrb5support.so.0 (0xb7db3000) libresolv.so.2 = /lib/tls/libresolv.so.2 (0xb7da) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7fb3000) windlord:~ objdump -p /usr/bin/remctl | grep NEEDED NEEDED libgssapi_krb5.so.2 NEEDED libc.so.6 windlord:~ objdump -p /usr/lib/libgssapi_krb5.so.2 | grep NEEDED NEEDED libkrb5.so.3 NEEDED libk5crypto.so.3 NEEDED libcom_err.so.2 NEEDED libkrb5support.so.0 NEEDED libresolv.so.2 NEEDED libc.so.6 -- Russ Allbery ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#345475: dpkg-shlibdeps: Please add support for udeb: lines in shlibs files
Quoting Frans Pop ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Package: dpkg-dev Severity: wishlist Tags: d-i This BR is the formal request to implement the support for parsing an extra line in shlibs files when determining dependencies for udebs. Frank Lichetenheld commited the fix for this in the brand new dpkg SVN on svn.debian.org (/svn/dpkg). So, we can expect the next dpkg release to include this. Frank proposed to upload a new dpkg just after next week-end. If you (or Joey) want to check this as I know you're currently busy working on g-i, I suggest you build a test dpkg package from the SVN. I'll trye building one anyway and make it available. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
