Bug#1041253: pyside2: stop depending on qtwebengine5-dev on mipsel

Note, qtwebengine-opensource-src was successfully built on mipsel after
a rebuild was manually scheduled, so the problem seem to be solved
without dropping mipsel too.

Bug#1019398: XDG desktop files lack video/ogg in MIME-Type list

2022-09-08 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: qtav-players
Version: 1.13.0+ds-4

The .desktop files in this package fail to list video/ogg as one of
the supported video files:

  % grep video/ogg /usr/share/applications/Player.desktop \
/usr/share/applications/QMLPlayer.desktop
  %

As ffmpeg is used to decode video, I believe Ogg videos are supported.

A larger list of MIME types I suspect the programs support are listed on
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia/PlayerSupport >.

Bug#990637: Why do marble have several .desktop files?

[Sune Stolborg Vuorela]

Note, the script I use operate on the appstream data set, so the fix
need to be done in the input system for appstream, not in my script. Or
in marble. :)

Bug#990637: Why do marble have several .desktop files?

2021-07-03 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: marble
Version: 4:17.08.3-3.2

I just noticed the .desktop files in marble confuses the script used to
generate https://wiki.debian.org/MimeTypesSupport/PackageList >
because it contain 9 .desktop files:

% dpkg -L marble|grep desktop
/usr/share/applications/marble_geo.desktop
/usr/share/applications/marble_gpx.desktop
/usr/share/applications/marble_kml.desktop
/usr/share/applications/marble_kmz.desktop

/usr/share/applications/org.kde.marble.desktop
/usr/share/kservices5/marble_part.desktop
/usr/share/kservices5/marble_thumbnail_kmz.desktop
%

Is there a good reason for all these desktop files. At elast some of
them seem redundant:

Bug#911052: libkscreenlocker5: Missing psmisc dependency trigger 'killall: not found' in postinst

2018-10-15 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: libkscreenlocker5
Version: 4:5.13.5-1
Severity: important

The piuparts testing in
https://piuparts.debian.org/stretch2buster/pass/plasma-workspace_4:5.13.5-1.log
>
report the following problem:

  /var/lib/dpkg/info/libkscreenlocker5:amd64.postinst: 12:
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libkscreenlocker5:amd64.postinst: killall: not
found

The fix is probably to depend on psmisc, which contain the 'killall'
program.

Setting the severity to important, as this causes the postinst to not
behave as expected for any user without the psmisc package installed.

Bug#852054: dragonplayer: Add missing MIME types to desktop file?

2017-08-13 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Just to be sure I made no mistake here, I tested in dolphin with a ogg,
ogv, webm and mp3 file, and sure enough, dragonplayer do not show in the
GUI as an alternative for playing these files.

The lacking mime types in the dragonplayer desktop file is a usability
problem for anyone trying to use dragonplayer as their primary video
player on the Linux desktop.

At the very least, please add audio/ogg, video/ogg, video/webm and
audio/mpeg (the ones outputed by 'file --mime-type' for the files) to
the desktop file, to ensure these Linux wise commonly used audio and
video formats are recognized.

Bug#852054: dragonplayer: Add missing MIME types to desktop file?

2017-01-20 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Package: dragonplayer
Verison: 4:16.08.3-1

Hi.

I noticed dragonplayer do not list the same set of MIME types as
smplayer in its desktop file. The missing MIME types causes the
graphical file manager in the various desktops to not suggest
dragonplayer to play various audio and video formats when the user click
on a media file.

Here is the list of MIME types present in the smplayer desktop file but
missing in the dragonplayer one. I compare with the smplayer desktop
file because it is the player with the most supported MIME types
according to https://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia/PlayerSupport >.
The MIME types marked (x) are official MIME types registered with
the IANA MIME registry, and the ones marked (*) are MIME types returned
by file --mime-type.

Please consider adding these 136 MIME types to the

dent in my confidence in kaddressbook and korganizer.

Is there any hope that this issue will be fixed in Jessie?

Bug#753471: konqueror: Black picture when trying to play youtube videos using html5

2014-07-02 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
Package: konqueror
Version: 4:4.12.4-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Not sure if this problem is with a library or the konqueror
application as such, so I start by filing the bug against konqueror.
Did not find a similar bug already reported.

When I visit youtube on a freshly installed Jessie desktop and try to
watch a video, the video player seem to start as it should, show the
duration and playout position, and even play the sound sound, but
there is no image. Only a black video frame.

See for example URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6voAW_Go5Y ,
which is working fine in Iceweasel, but not in konqueror.

Could it be a problem with the canvas support in konqueror, incorrect
X settings or something else?

Bug#658716: dragonplayer: should disable the screen saver when playing a video in fullscreen

2013-09-22 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

According to URL: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259313 , this
issue was fixed 2012-06-02. I am not sure which version this would
represent in Debian, and lack the setup to test anything after wheezy at
the moment. Just mentioning it here, in case it can be closed in
unstable now.

Bug#718813: KDE migrates something on the first login of a freshly created user

2013-08-05 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: kdepim-runtime
Version: 4:4.4.11.1-6
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
UserTags: debian-edu

When logging in with a freshly created user on a freshly installed
machine, installed using the Debian Edu Roaming Workstation profile
based on the current Debian testing (Jessie), a popup show up at the end of the
login process with
this content:

  KResource Migration Tool

[i] Trying to migrate 'Default Address Book'...
V Migration of 'Default Address Book' succeeded.

  [Close]

The same happen with Debian Edu based on Wheezy/stable. As there is no
address book KDE setup in the user home directory when the user log in
for the first time, I expect there to be nothing to migrate, and thus
expect there to be no popup about some strange migration.

I tried to run 'ps -ef|grep mig' when the popup was shown, and after I
had closed it, and discovered that the process 'kres-migration
--interactive-on-change --type contact --omit-client-bridge' was running
when the popup was showing and no longer running when the popup was
gone. I thus suspect it was responsible for the popup and assign this
bug to the kdepim-runtime package. I might be mistaken. Please
reassign if some other package is the cause.

The user home directory created on a roaming workstation is fairly
standard, with these files present:

  .local/share/user-places.xbel
  .profile
  .bash_logout
  .bashrc
  .gtk-bookmarks

The user-places.xbel and .gtk-bookmarks files are created when the user
is created with a CIFS mount pointer to the central home directory.
Perhaps one of them is involved in this issue?

Bug#718020: rocs: Please add Math as category in its desktop file

2013-07-27 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: rocs
Version: 4:4.8.4-1
Tags: patch
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: debian-edu

I believe the rocs desktop file is missing the Math category in its
desktop file. I noticed that the program do not show up next to
graphthing and other graph related tools in the menu. The relevant
difference in the two packages .desktop file seem to be the Math
category.

Please add Math to the Categories line in the desktop file. Here is a
patch I believe should work.

Bug#711237: Logging into KDE turn off the screen (for laptops with i915.invert_brightness=1?)

2013-06-11 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
reassign 711237 kde-workspace-bin
found 711237 4:4.8.4-6
thanks

Sune (svuorela on IRC) suggested I talked to Alex Fiestas (afiestas on
#solid - irc.freenode.net), and I did. He suggested I ran
'kscreen-console bug' and said that the problem most likely is caused
by powerdevil, a kded module in the kde-workspace-bin package.

While trying to figure out what was causing the black scree, I also
got some ideas for debugging on #debian-kde, suggesting to use
kdebugdialog to enable debugging in ksmserver, ksplash and something
like that to get log messages to show up in .xsession-errors.

Luckily this did not prove neccessary, as powerdevil was the cause,
and editing /usr/share/kde4/services/kded/powerdevil.desktop, changing
X-KDE-Kded-autoload from true to false worked around the problem.

Reassigning this bug to the binary package most likely responsible.

The output from kscreen-console bug is attached.

Bug#711237: Logging into KDE turn off the screen (for laptops with i915.invert_brightness=1?)

2013-06-05 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: kde-full
Version: 5:77+deb7u1
Severity: important
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: debian-edu

When installing Debian Wheezy on a Packard Bell EasyNote LV, the
screen is turned off when the machine boot after installation. See
URL: http://bugs.debian.org/710938 for the details. When applying
the workaround (i915.invert_brightness=1), I get the gdm and kdm login
display, and can log in. And when I log into Gnome, I can use the
desktop.

But when I log into KDE, the splash screen show up, the first icon show
up, and then suddenly the screen is turned off. The login continue, and
the screen to not turn on again until quite a while later. I suspect
what happen is that the screen saver kick in and try to turn off the
screen while in reality it turn it on again. When I move the mouse, the
screen turn off again.

I have no idea what package could cause this, so I file it against
kde-full, hoping you can help me debug this and pinpoint the problem to
the correct package.

The same problem exist in Ubuntu Raring when logging into KDE there.

Bug#669878: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'phonon-backend-vlc'

2012-12-15 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Samuel Thibault]
See the previous upload. As the changelog says, the upload you mention
is just a typo-fixing upload, there's no bug there. The previous upload
was meant to fix #691160 by doing some renaming. I guess _that_ might
have introduced a dependency loop, but I fail to see how that could go
through phonon-backend-vlc. What is a way to determine the actual loop?

I have no idea how to determine the actual loop, but according to
URL: http://bugs.debian.org/655382 it is in libqt4-dbus.
Apparently a loop make the apt resolving unstable, and a little change
in input values can make it fail.

Bug#692730: kdm fail to update utmp when a user log in, causing shutdown-at-night to misbehave

2012-11-08 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: kdm
Version: 4:4.4.5-7+squeeze1
Severity: important

In Debian Edu, we have discovered a fatal problem with kdm, when used
together with shutdown-at-night (See BTS #692539). The problem is that
a client machine is automatically turned off at 16:00, even if a user is
logged in, because 'who' do not report any logged in user when using
kdm. This is turn is caused by kdm failing to update utmp when a user
log in.

To figure out what is going on, I tried to run strace on the child kdm
process when I log in with a user, and this is the only section where
utmp is touched:

utmp isn't updated at all.

Changing the setting to UseSessReg=true and no-use-sessreg solve the
problem. Perhaps it is a better default? Please fix it in Squeeze, and
ensure it isn't a problem in Wheezy (I have not tested in Wheezy).

Bug#659019: step: Can it be changed to use less memory?

2012-02-07 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: step
Version: 4:4.4.5-2
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: debian-edu

When testing the very nice step application in Debian Edu/Squeeze, the
process eats up all my memory and the machine start trashing.

I normally load the examples one by one, and very quickly the process
is eating up my machines memory and the computer grind to a halt while
paging and filling up swap. I've tested both in Squeeze and Wheezy,
and the processes quickly get several hundred megabytes in resident
size according to top.

Can the step program be changed to use less memory?

The memory usage make the program close to unusable for me.

Bug#658612: dragonplayer: should claim support for application/x-cd-image to work with DVD images

2012-02-04 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: dragonplayer
Version: 4:4.4.5-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

I discovered this issue in Squeeze. I'm unable to test in later
versions at the moment.

When using konqueror to browse through my collection of DVD ISOs, I
tried to click on one of them and expected dragonplayer to start or at
least for KDE to propose either to use dragonplayer or k3b. Instead
only k3b was started.

The reason for this is that /usr/share/applications/kde4/k3b.desktop
list application/x-cd-image as a supported MIME type, while
/usr/share/applications/kde4/dragonplayer.desktop do not. Please add
the MIME type.

When I start 'dragon /path/to/dvd.iso', the DVD plays just fine, so I
know dragonplayer support the DVD ISOs. :)

Here is a patch to implement the change:

Bug#655243: bluedevil: Unable to save user-places.xbel on first login (race?)

2012-01-09 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: libkdecore5
Version: 4:4.4.5-2
Severity: important
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: debian-edu

When logging into KDE for the first time with Debian/Squeeze on a
machine with Bluetooth hardware, KDE show a dialog reporting an error
saving the file ~/.local/share//user-places.xbel. It is claimed to be
caused by permissions problems. The disk is not full and the directory
exist and the user have access to write to the directory after login.

According to URL: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=112580
the problem is in kdelibs and a workaround is to create ~/.local/share
before the user log into KDE. According to
URL: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=109t=69921 the
underlying problem is fixed in kdelibs version 4:4.6.1 in Linux Mint.

I find the same problem reported to Ubuntu as
URL: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/627815 , and claimed to be fixed
in kde4libs version 4:4.5.1-0ubuntu7 and again fixed in kde4libs version
4:4.6.1-0ubuntu1.

I also find the same problem reported in
URL: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=750423 .

As this problem affect Debian Edu badly, it would be great if it could
be fixed in Debian/Squeeze. New users, especially teachers and pupils
in schools, are confused and scared by such strange message when they
first log into their user account.

Bug#582568: kdm: causes kaboom to show upgrade dialog on first root login

2010-08-10 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Petter Reinholdtsen]
We investigated this issue a bit on IRC, and two workarounds were
discovered. Either init.d/kdm can set KDEROOTDIR to some more
sensible location (like /var/lib/kdm/). This will make kdm stop
creating files in the root users home directory, and is a more proper
 fix.

Given that squeeze is frozen, I suggest this is done to kdm quickly to
get a fix into Squeeze before it release.

An alternative to avoid the config migration dialog when root log in
for the first time, is to change kaboom to look for ~/.kde/share/
instead of just ~/.kde/. The files would still be created by kdm in
~root/.kde/, but the dialog would no longer show up.

This should probably be done too.

For Debian Edu, we have implemented a workaround and touch
/root/.local/kaboom during installation to make sure kaboom do not
show up when the root user log in for the first time.

I suspect this bug should be release critical, but am not sure so I
have not raised the severity. Asked on #debian-release for their
view, but did not get a definite answer.

Would be nice to have some comment on this issue before Squeeze is
released.

Happy hacking,

Bug#582568: kdm: causes kaboom to show upgrade dialog on first root login

2010-08-10 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Modestas Vainius]
Secondly, I'm not denying that there is an issue about kdm creating
useless files, but there is nothing critical or RC about it given
 the former.

kaboom could be smarter in this case but again there is nothing RC
 about it.

If this is the stance of the KDE maintainence team, as in willing to
release Squeeze with kdm producing files in /root/.kde/ when started
after boot and the root user to get a misleading and confusing
migrate configuration dialog when logging in for the first time on a
freshly installed machine, I'll spend my time elsewhere. Unless told
otherwise, I will take it that your view is shared by the rest of the
KDE team, and thus leave this resolution of issue for a future upgrade
of KDE.

Bug#584434: krb5-kdc: Should it start before gdm/kdm/etc and after DNS servers?

2010-07-09 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: krb5-kdc
Version: 1.8.1+dfsg-5
user: debian-...@lists.debian.org
usertags: debian-edu
User: initscripts-ng-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org
Usertags: missing-depends

I ran into a problem in Debian Edu, where kdm refused to log in a user
with its password in Kerberos after boot. I believe it is caused by
krb5-kdc starting after kdm is started, as making sure krb5-kdc start
before kdm seem to solve the issue.

This make me suspect krb5-kdc should start before the display
managers, and thus its init.d script should include

  # X-Start-Before: $x-display-manager

The alternative is for each *dm script to list krb5-kdc in its
should-start header, as requested in #584434, and it seem like a
better idea to solve it once and for all in krb5-kdc.

Also, should krb5-kdc need a working DNS server, it should include
$named in its should-start header, to make sure it start after the DNS
server is operational also when the DNS server is on the local
machine.

Bug#569284: kmix: Fail to work on LTSP thin clients using PulseAudio

2010-05-30 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
retitle 569284 kmix: Fail to work on LTSP thin clients (provides
ALSA-PulseAudio, PuseAudio and ESD)
thanks

Sune put me in contact with Colin Guthrie, who is working on a kmix
patch for pulseaudio. Sune provided me with a kdemultimedia test
package with such patch included, and I tested running it via a thin
client, and it caused kmix to segfault. The thin client have ESD,
ALSA via pulseaudio and pulseaudio enabled. I've forgotten the URL to
Sunes test packages, but have asked him to submit the URL to BTS.

When running the same kmix version locally on the server, where ESD is
not enabled and the alsa devices are local, kmix only showed a dummy
output control instead of the local audio device.

I lack contact with the test setup right now, so I can't test any
more. Colin asked for this input:

  1. Get a backtrace for the crash - preferably with an updated patch
from the above if it fits.
  2. On the dummy machine, try and get some info as to what is hogging
the device nodes or if check if there is a permissions problem on
 the sound devices themselves.

Details about 2) can be found on URL: http://pulseaudio.org/wiki/KDE
(basically lsof/fuser/getfacl results).

The latest version of the pulseaudio patch is available using this
recipe:

  git clone git://colin.guthr.ie/kdemultimedia
  cd kdemultimedia;
  git checkout -t origin/pulse-4.4.4
  git diff master..pulse-4.4.4 mypatch.patch

Colin said it *should* apply cleanly on top of 4.4 branch of KDE and
hopefully the 4.4.4 source tarball.

Bug#582568: kdm: causes kaboom to show upgrade dialog on first root login

2010-05-21 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: libkdecore5
Version: 4:4.4.3-1
Severity: important
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
UserTags: debian-edu

When kdm is started, these files are created in ~root/.kde/:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 12 feb. 21:32 cache-tjener.intern -
/var/tmp/kdecache-root
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 12 feb. 21:33 tmp-tjener.intern - /tmp/kde-root

Their existence causes the first login with root to show an
configuration upgrade dialog, which is unwanted when logging in for
the first time. See #570784 and #570925 for more information.
Perhaps the kaboom bug should be merged with this one?

I believe it is a bad idea for kdm to create files in ~root/ as it is
not guaranteed to be writable. With LTSP, / is read-only, and only
selected directories in /var/ are made writable by bind-mounting to a
tmpfs directory.

I was going to report this against kdm, but Sune told me to report it
against libkdecore5 instead.

Happy hacking,

alsamixer is not really a good alternative to present.

thanks

Here is a draft patch based on the code in KDE 3
(/kdebase/kicker/kicker/core/containerarea.cpp). I would very much
like input on the code used to locate the config file. Is kickoff the
correct name for this system? Is the file name default-favorites
good? What about its location? I believe it will put it under
/usr/share/apps/kickoff/default-favorites or
/usr/share/kde4/apps/kickoff/default-favorites, but have not verified
this.

Re: Bug#570369: kdm in squeeze is unable to handle kdm themes which worked in lenny

2010-03-05 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Petter Reinholdtsen]
So either we had a bug in debian-edu-artwork which failed to trigger
a problem with kdm in lenny, or the sematic of the THEME setting in
kdm changed between lenny and squeeze. Only the kdm maintainer can
tell what the intended behavour for the THEME setting in
 /etc/default/kdm.d/ was.

I found a more accessable source for this information, in
URL:help:/kdm/kdm-files.html#kdmrc-greeter:

  Theme

The theme to use for the greeter. Can point to either a directory
or an XML file.

Empty by default.

As this was the definition for Lenny, it should be the same for
Squeeze, or init.d/kdm should be rewritten to handle the THEME
variable used in /etc/default/kdm.d the same way as in Lenny. A
simple test to see if the path is a directory or a file and rewrite it
to a xml file if it was a directory should work.

I suspect thought that the problem can be caused by something in our
XML file, and would welcome help with reviewing it from someone with
knowledge about the format. Check out the debian-edu-artwork package
in unstable and testing for the theme in question.

Re: Bug#570369: kdm in squeeze is unable to handle kdm themes which worked in lenny

2010-03-05 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
I came across another clue in
URL: http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdebase-workspace/kdm/kdm-themes.html ,

which state that the theme directory need to include a file
KdmGreeterTheme.desktop. Our kdm theme include a
GdmGreeterTheme.desktop file instead. Rename it to
KdmGreeterTheme.desktop and changing 'GdmGreeterTheme' to
'KdmGreeterTheme' in the file made kdm stop rejecting the theme. The
buttons are still broken, but I guess that can be fixed by changing
the xml file.

Next, I tried to do the same with the kdm theme using the Lenny kdm,
and the theme still work. I guess kdm became more picky about themese
between KDE 3 and 4.

Perhaps we can use the same theme for gdm and kdm if we provide both
KdmGreeterTheme.desktop and GdmGreeterTheme.desktop and a XML file
that both gdm and kdm understand? Would be nice to have the same
theme for kdm and gdm.

Re: Bug#570369: kdm in squeeze is unable to handle kdm themes which worked in lenny

2010-03-04 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Petter Reinholdtsen]
Perhaps. Actually, I believe the bug is in KDM, which provided a
way in lenny to set up ones own kdm theme, and is unable to write
 the specified theme in Squeeze.

Note, I ment 'read' when I used 'write' above.

I've investigated some more, and the problem seem to be that kdm
changed its understanding of the THEME setting. In
/etc/default/kdm.d/20_debian-edu, we use

  THEME=/usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/debian-edu

Changing this to

  THEME=/usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/debian-edu/debian-edu.xml

make kdm able to understand the theme. There are still visual
problems with it (the buttons are missing and the time stamp do not
show up), but kdm do not fail to start.

So either we had a bug in debian-edu-artwork which failed to trigger a
problem with kdm in lenny, or the sematic of the THEME setting in kdm
changed between lenny and squeeze. Only the kdm maintainer can tell
what the intended behavour for the THEME setting in
/etc/default/kdm.d/ was.

Anyway, I suggest we change /etc/default/kdm.d/20_debian-edu in
debian-edu-artwork for both Lenny and Squeeze to work around the
problem (by adding /debian-edu.xml to the THEME setting), and fix up
the theme to work in both Lenny and Squeeze as soon as possible.

In BTS report #230422, I outline the need for a hook into the Xreset
phase of the display manager. Please implement support for it in kdm,
to make it possible to run scripts when users log out from a kdm
session.

I tried to look at the kdebase-workspace source to figure out where to
add code to run the common Xreset script and provide a patch, but was
unable to find the kdm Xreset script. Adding some code like this
would solve this issue:

  # Use common Xreset framework if it exist

Bug#569284: kmix: Fail to work on LTSP thin clients using PulseAudio

2010-02-22 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
found 569284 4:4.34-1

[Modestas Vainius]
You can't expect us to fix KDE 3.5 to work with evil that is PA when
KDE 4.3 does not work sanely with it yet (in theory, KDE 4.4 should
 be better in this department).

I tested this with LTSP using kmix version 4:4.34-1, and it do not
work on the thin client there either. The kmix window show no mixer
at all, even thought sound work with KDE (the login sound is played).

What's more, I don't see how this bug qualifies as important. KDE
3.5 has never been designed to work with PA at all. Feel free to
 submit patches though.

Raising severity to important to reflect this new information and the
fact that it affect KDE 4 in Squeeze, and affect a lot of users
without making it unusable for everybody.

This bug affect Debian Edu, making it harder to document how users
should change the sound volume, as the same method (use kmix) do not
work everywhere.

Bug#570977: Please provide way to customize default favorites list for new users

2010-02-22 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: kdebase-workspace-bin
Version: 4:4.3.4-3
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
UserTags: debian-edu

In Debian Edu, we want to change the list of applications showing up
in the default favorites list for new users. One way to do this is to
create a file kickoffrc, but this only allow us to replace the current
list, not only append to the current list. Looking at the source, I
trace the default list to this function ion
plasma/applets/kickoff/core/favoritesmodel.cpp:

static QListQString defaultFavorites()
{
QListQString applications;
applications konqbrowser kmail systemsettings
dolphin;

QListQString desktopFiles;

foreach (const QString application, applications) {
KService::Ptr service = KService::serviceByStorageId(kde4- +
application +
.desktop);
if (service) {
desktopFiles  service-entryPath();
}
}

return desktopFiles;
}

The list of default entries are hardcoded in the source, as far as I
can see, to konqueror, kmail, system settings and the dolphin file
browser. Can this code be changed to allow us to add some entries to
a directory that will show in in the default favorites list?

With KDE 3, we could do something similar for the KDE panel list by
adding a replacement share/apps/kicker/default-apps. It would be
great if a similar or better feature is made available for KDE 4.

As written, it is a new *feature* in kde 4.4. Features are not

I did not understand what you wrote. Care to elaborate?

The issue at hand is that kmix is unable to control the sound volume
for the audio system used by KDE on a thin client. KDE audio work
just fine for (most) KDE applications in this setup, but kmix do not
present any controls to adjust the audio level.

select a working mixer and the user is thus unable to regulate the
sound level using the normal KDE tool.

Here is a tested patch to solve the issue. It also require a fix in
usplash (#492407) to work properly, but with those two fixes in
place, usplash stop as it should before kdm is started, and the boot
work as it should in Debian Edu.

It occured to me that it might be better to just move the
responsibility of shutting down the splash screen from individual
init.d scripts to /etc/init.d/rc, as it already have an idea of when
the splash screen should stop.

Because of this, I have implemented a change in sysv-rc to call the

will give it some more testing before uploading.

Bug#489734: I just tried in Virtualbox

2008-07-24 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Lisandro Damián Nicanor Pérez Meyer]
I just tried both usplash and splashy in virtualbox running Lenny up
to date. They both worked fine.

Good to hear. Note that the kdm/usplash issue I reported is a timing
issue that do not happen every boot, and I test using
insserv/dependency based boot sequencing.

Perhaps the use of dependency based boot sequencing is an vital
trigger?

Bug#489734: I just tried in Virtualbox

2008-07-24 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Lisandro Damián Nicanor Pérez Meyer]
I will install gdm now to see if the problem persists. If that
happens, I will reassign the bug to usplash

I believe it will have to be fixed in both gdm and kdm, and that no
clean solution exist to solve it in usplash. The existing solutions
from Ubuntu solve the problem in kdm and gdm. Why do you want to
reassign it to usplash? How do you propose it is solved there? Is
there something wrong with the proposed solution and the API provided
by initscripts?

Just to make sure it is clear. We in the Debian Edu need a solution
to this in Lenny. A package ping-pong seem likely to take a long
time, and thus will not make a solution show up in Lenny. The only
alternative seem to be for us to fork kdm and maintain our own version
in our own repository. We really would like to avoid this.

usplash in debian does not deviate from ubuntu part.

I asked on #debian-kde, and URL:http://paste.debian.net/12462/ was
mentioned, stopping usplash before starting kdm.

It might be a better idea to use the splash screen api provided by
initscripts, ie splash_stop() from /lib/init/splash-functions-base.
Something like this added just before starting kdm should work:

  . /lib/init/splash-functions-base
  splash_stop

Any hope of having this fixed very soon, and in time for Lenny? This
issue is very important for Debian Edu. We had to drop usplash as a
quickfix to get the system working at all.

Bug#449150: ktouch missing norwegian keyboard file

2008-06-16 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Ana Guerrero]
Sure, if you have tested it and you are sure it works. Then please
attach the path to this BR and mark is as +patch so i will see when
looking at what can be fixed/patched for Lenny and will apply it.

It is tested and found to be working. During testing, I started to
suspect that a better option might be to merge the nn and nb keyboards
into a no (Norwegian) keyboard. The keyboard layouts are fairly
similar. The difference is around the enter key, and is more a
question on how many keys the keyboard have than a question of
language.

Looking at the three keyboards I have available, all of them matches
the nb.keyboard layout, and none -f them matches the nn.keyboard
layout. All have ['] between [æ] and [enter].

In short, I recommend renaming nb.keyboard to no.keyboard, and remove
the nn.keyboard.

Bug#449150: ktouch missing norwegian keyboard file

2008-06-13 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Hi. Any hope of having the norwegian keyboard (nb) available in
Lenny? This is important for Debian Edu.

The issue is reported upstream already, but still not applied there.
See URL:http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=144341. The nn.keyboard
file in version 3.5.9 is not sufficient, and it applies to nynorsk
(nn) not bokmål (nb).

Bug#385849: Need policy compliant way to enable custom kdm theme for debian edu

2006-09-03 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: kdm
Version: 3.5.4-2
Severity: important

I need a mechanism to enable the Debian Edu KDM theme when the
debian-edu-artwork package is installed. As far as I can see, kdm
only reads configuration from /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc, so there is no way
to provide an override file with the Debian Edu configuration. So I
am only left with the policy breaking method of editing the conffile
/etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc:

kdmrc=/etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc
/usr/bin/update-ini-file $kdmrc 'X-*-Greeter' UseTheme true
/usr/bin/update-ini-file $kdmrc 'X-*-Greeter' Theme
/usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/debian-edu

Can you please provide some mechanism for my postinst script to use to
enable our custom KDM theme, or advice me on how to enable it at
install time in a policy compliant way?

Debian Edu is a Custom Debian Distribution providing a preconfigured
out of the box networked installation for schools. We are regularly
asked to provide customized artwork, and as we try to solve it we ran
into this problem.

Bug#385849: Need policy compliant way to enable custom kdm theme for debian edu

2006-09-03 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
I've discovered that I also need to update /etc/kde3/kdm/backgroundrc
to make sure the background image do not flicker back and forth when I
use the same background image in KDE an the KDM theme. It would be
nice if I could do this too in a policy compliant way.

  /usr/bin/update-ini-file /etc/kde3/kdm/backgroundrc 'Desktop0' Wallpaper
debian-edu-wallpaper.png

For this background I could use divert to replace
debian-kde_default.png, or perhaps the KDE packages should provide
/usr/share/wallpapers/debian-kde_default.png.desktop as an
alternative, to make it easier to replace it in artwork packages? For
the KDM theme, The UseTheme flag need to be changed to 'true' before
any divertion or alternative could do the job, so I am still searching
for a policy compliant way to do that.

Bug#275951: Please split kdmrc into multiple files for ease of maintenance

2006-09-03 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Teaching kdm to read configuration from more than one file would have
several advantages. Multilevel configuration, where kdm for example
reads /usr/share/apps/kdm/kdmrc first, then overrides in
/usr/share/apps/kdm/kdmrc.d/ and finally /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc, would
solve these problems:

 - It would reduce upgrade problems, as the sysadmin would edit the
file in /etc/, and the package maintainer would edit the file in
/usr/share/, and thus no upgrade conflict would happen. If a
config option change name, the old value would be ignored, but that
is best fixed by not changing name of config options. :)

 - It would make it easier to customize kdm automatically for custom
debian distros (see bug #385849), as the CDD could provide an kdmrc
override file with the values it want to override in
/usr/share/apps/kdm/kdmrc.d/, and it would be replace the package
defaults while allowing the sysadmin to override the values she
   wants using the kcontrol options.

Solving this would make it a lot easier for Debian Edu. Please try to
get this fixed before Etch releases.

Bug#306171: konsole: fail to regain focus when hovering window disappear

2005-04-24 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: konsole
Version: 4:3.3.2-1
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

The konsole program fail to regain focus when it should. I'm using
the 'focus over mouse' policy. I'll try to explain the problem.

I start a konsole, and use it as normal. Next, I for example start
xine (or some other program, using xine as an example), and places the
window over the konsole window. I place the mouse over both the xine
window and the konsole window, and then press 'q' to exit xine. At
this point, the focus is back in the konsole window, but it isn't
accepting keypresses. I have to move the mouse out of the konsole
window, and back in again, before konsole will accept keypresses.

This do not happen for every film I play using xine. And it does not
happen for all programs. I've been able to reproduce it using the
film available from
URL:http://www.nuug.no/pub/video/published/20040819-minipc-medium.mpeg.

Start a konsole, run
'xine http://www.nuug.no/pub/video/published/20040819-minipc-medium.mpeg'
and place the video window over the konsole. Next, press 'q' to exit
xine and try to use [enter] in the konsole. It does not work.

Re: Desktop task broken on !(i386/powerpc)

2005-01-02 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Sven Luther]
I think the real solution to this recuring problem is to split the
dekstop patch into a just X, gnome and KDE task. This is much
more friendlier to our non-broadband users, and it makes the task
stuff actually usable. As it stands, we could as well not show it.

Personally, I use both KDE, Gnome and just X programs. Why do you
believe a desktop user want to limit herself to only one of these
classes of programs?

I do not have a powerpc machine available to test this.

The constant is supposed to be in pbbtags.h from package
