Yes, you are correct. Plus the form factor, no upgrades, no keyboard,
etc. If one wants is just a simple router with plug-and-go
functionality, a consumer SOHO router is the way to do.

I know you would rather not hear this, but I think, ultimately, a
compact USB modem will end up being your best bet.

Another option might be a wireless aircard, running in NDIS mode, if you
can find one with a Linux driver. You might get around that with a
router, there are a few that can use an aircard or USB wireless
broadband card or 3G phone with a USB port. I use the Kyocera KR2, it
works pretty well, as long as you don't go over the 5GB cap, and get
throttled. (If you let that happen, it's a bit of a nightmare to connect.)

Yup, going this way is going to be cheaper, no doubt. However, if the OP
goes the way he is thinking about (adding a multiport NIC and a wireless
bridge or an additional wireless card), that will be an excellent
learning experience. I have an old machine running as a router this way.
It has two NICs and a wireless PCI card working as an access point
(D-Link, can look up the model if anyone wants, but it is supported by
madwifi driver). One of the NICs is connected to my ADSL modem, the
other to a LAN switch. My wired LAN is 192.168.0.x, my wireless LAN is
192.168.5.0 and I have iptables running with my custom rules controlling
both the network with access the internet via the ppp0 connection made
through the ADSL modem.

Now, I also have the WRT-54GL which has been flashed with the open
source firmware.

I would say the consumer router choice (e.g. WRT-54G(L)) is the easiest
to implement. The other choice, making a computer as a router, is quite
involved but interesting (could be made very streamlined using a
firewall machine oriented Linux Distro) and serves as an excellent
learning project (networking and iptables). Moreover, with the latter
choice, one has very fine grained control over the routing and filtering
of network packets.

My 2 cents,
either way, Good luck to the OP!

Yes, this is a known bug. It also affects support of ICQ, AIM, Yahoo,
Gadu-Gadu, MySpaceIM, QQ, and all other centrally-organized,
proprietary, private IM systems. Most of them prohibit you from using
any client other than their own in the first place, and enforce this by
changing the protocol on a regular basis.

The workaround? Don't use proprietary IM protocols: Cut them off
instead. Use XMPP instead.

Ogg is what you want. It's probably currently best known for it's audio
layer, Vorbis, though it also has a video component called Theora. From
my experience, Vorbis stacks up very nicely against MPEG, the latter
suffers from compression artifacts horribly at 128kbps when compared to
a similarly encoded Vorbis file, and the Vorbis file comes in smaller.

Hey,

Again sidestepping the actual question:

I had this same issue when they started phasing out RS232 ports from
laptops, the solution for me was to use a usb adapter. I believe the
same solution may apply here. Staying with the google theme there are
results such as these:
http://www.google.com/products?&q=usb+56K+modem+linux

Though it then becomes yet another dongle to carry around...

cheers,
Owen.

By searching for a laptop with a real modem, before even taking Linux
into account, you have eliminated 100% of all available options: It
doesn't exist. Carry a real modem with you if you need a modem.

Besides, do you really trust the phone company to provide proper voltage
and polarity? Any idea what a line surge directly to your motherboard
does? :o)

xscreensaver and XDM login window

2008-06-28 Thread David Witbrodt
Has anyone on this list who runs XDM tried to get the 'xscreensaver'
to run on the login screen? The 'man' page gives some instructions,
but those do not work for me. In fact, the suggestion to place

xhost +localhost

in /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config does not work. On my system, the way to
run GUI apps as root under XOrg is more like this:

xhost +local:root

Using this in 'xdm-config' prevents the startup breakage, but still
does not allow 'xscreensaver' to run.

This is a matter of curiosity, just to see if anyone has been able
to get it working. The 'xscreensaver' runs fine once my regular
user logs in, and I have the XOrg DPMS settings adjusted so that
the monitor blanks if no one logs in to the XDM login within 5
minutes.

Aside from ideological purity, it makes little difference. Using MP4 makes
the file something like 1% smaller, and with several players harder to seek
in. I'm sure there's a way to tweak the MP4 to be more open to seeking, but

AVI is only a container for audio and video content. It can contain
video encoded in many formats (MPEG2, MPEG4, H.264 etc). Just because a
player knows the container format doesn't mean it can decode the
content.

BTW, AVI is obsolete. MP4 (a container format defined in the MPEG4
standard) appears to become the new standard.

So what you're aiming for is to find the right combination of container,
video codec and audio codec. My suggestion would be to use H.264 video
and AAC audio in an MP4 container. If you choose the right settings,
these files should be playable on video iPods and PS3s (and any computer
with current software).

This converts to MPEG4 (ffmpeg's default choice, at least on my system)
in an AVI container which is a bad combination:

Maybe not the answer that you were looking for. But seeing what your
requirements are, I'd simply add a two or four port ethernet card to the
case and plug a wireless bridge into one of the ports. This would be a
hassle free setup and give you all the options you need without having
to hunt down that probably rare or non existent card with both wireless
and wired. This would also give you the future proof posibility to add
another wireless bridge when a new and better standard is hitting the
market. (I love to have both 802.11b and 802.11n bridges on my network,
so I can have the 802.11n bridge running at its fastest setting).

I had done something similar with my monowall firewall running on a PC
Engines WRAP board. Adding a mini-PCI wireless card, with its associated
cables and antennas, would have been a big expense. It was much cheaper
to pick up a used Linksys WRT54G ($20 from Craigslist) and use it as a
dedicated wireless AP. You can also use the the remaining 3 ethernet
ports as you would a regular switch for the wired devices on your LAN.

But only because you choose to use a bitrate larger than the original
file. :)

Not at all. It is even quite uncommon in non-geek environments.

Probably not. But by default you can't play many formats on most Windows
machines anyway. I advise Windows users to install VLC every time they
have trouble playing videos.

Debian 4.0r3 for s/390, network install problem

2008-06-28 Thread Ventura
I am trying to do a network install of Debian 4.0r3 and unfortunately
I am receiving a message about modules unavailable.

This the part of installation dialog with the messages.
//
No kernel modules were found. This probably is due to a mismatch
between the kernel used by this version of the installer and the
kernel version available in the archive.
If you're installing from a mirror, you can work around this problem
by choosing to install a different version of Debian.
The install will probably fail to work if you continue without
kernel modules. Continue the install without loading kernel modules?

//-

The web log I have:

Jun 28 13:57:00 anna[936]: WARNING **: no packages for kernel in
archive

Have anybody ever had this problem or have any idea ???

Thanks in advance,

As requested I have attached my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files. I'm
attaching the conf and log files which occurred using the nv driver,
although I get the same results (near as I can tell) when using the vga
driver.
You can also see that I've disabled glx output and restricted screen
resolution to 1024x768 or lower (non-widescreen resolutions) in the hope
that this might help, but no luck so far.

To keep the message length down I have attached these files instead of
copied the text. Hope this doesn't violate any mailing list etiquette
rules.

Haven't gotten the box to recognize the monitor yet, although I did manage
to get the mouse configured correctly thanks to mdetect. Is it unusual to
have to require root privileges to open /dev/psaux ? I couldn't cat that
device file on my usual login, and mdetect could not discover it without
being run as root.

Maybe not the answer that you were looking for. But seeing what your
requirements are, I'd simply add a two or four port ethernet card to
the case and plug a wireless bridge into one of the ports. This would
be a hassle free setup and give you all the options you need without
having to hunt down that probably rare or non existent card with both
wireless and wired. This would also give you the future proof
posibility to add another wireless bridge when a new and better
standard is hitting the market. (I love to have both 802.11b and

Good input.

There's a Debian packaged mencoder at debian-multimedia.org. Just add that
repository to your sources.list.

thanks.

It's going to be. The AVI container format isn't suitable for the very
smallest file size, and you're setting a high bit rate.

Ogg Theora springs to mind. It's totally free (no patents, no nothing).
Quality is good, but ...

Not the right codec for Mac and Windows users (software not available)?

AVI works, actually. Windows Media Video (WMV) is not open, but it's
playable on all three with the right software. MP4 can be played on all
with the right software and will give you excellent compression. Actually,
FLV is a good choice for web streaming. You can play them locally, if you
can convince your users to install VLC or something.

I don't wish to use FLV because its a proprietary format developed and
maintained by one company. I don't wish to support closed formats.
Streaming is not a requirement for me.

It means AVI is the best choice for out-of-the-box playing on all
platforms and devices?

BTW, I convert FLV to AVI with this command line:

ffmpeg -i filename.flv -sameq filename.avi

You can automate this with:

for i in *.flv ; do ffmpeg -i {} -sameq `basename {} flv`.avi ; done

Using "-sameq" gives you the same bit rates as the original file. If
desired, you can specify codecs as well, but the default MPEG4 ASP and MP2
works for me. (If size is an issue, force MP3 compression.)

With your command line options the size problem still exists:

$ du -sk test*
10072 test.avi
2464test.flv
10104 test_mp3.avi

AFAIK the only "real open source format" is Ogg Theora. Which codec

try: ffmpeg -i file.flv to view the code

thank you. Really good input!

Most clips even have much lower bitrate

$ ffmpeg -i example.flv
[...]
Seems stream 0 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate:
1000.00 (1000/1) -> 29.92 (359/12)
Input #0, flv, from 'example.flv':
  Duration: 00:01:03.5, start: 0.00, bitrate: 56 kb/s
  Stream #0.0: Video: flv, yuv420p, 320x240, 29.92 fps(r)
  Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 22050 Hz, mono, 56 kb/s
Must supply at least one output file

and try something like: ffmpeg -i source.flv -b 500k -vcodec mpeg4 -vtag
divx -acodec mp3 -ar 8000k -ab 64k destination.avi

and check size/quality

$ ffmpeg -i example.flv -b 500k -vcodec mpeg4 -vtag divx -acodec mp3 -ar
8000k -ab 64k example.avi

$ du -sh example.*
4.4Mexample.avi
2.5Mexample.flv

With the size I am happy. But the quality is much worse (often it is
jumping to the next frame)

Consider: are your file done for internet stream or local stream? and choose
what you prefer :-)

Not for streaming. Just let other users downloading and archiving.

sorry I cannot really help you, but aMSN (in etch) doesn't work, either
since some days. In the aMSN forum I read that it's not a server issue
but an issue of aMSN itself. Anyhow, something must have changed because
some days ago it did work. The latest SVN version of aMSN should work,
but I didn't try it. So installing aMSN from debian might not fix your
problem. Hope this will be fixed in the etch-package soon. Maybe someone

add

project: wired/wireless router

2008-06-28 Thread Gregory Seidman
I have a mini case with a VIA motherboard and CPU. It has an on-board
ethernet port. I'd like to use it as a Linux firewall/NAT router to replace
the (wired only) LinkSys I have now. It only has one PCI slot, but I want
to be able to provide both wired and wireless LAN access. I'm looking for
both hardware suggestions (i.e. a PCI card with both wired and wireless
ethernet that is supported by the kernel in stable) and configuration help.

My requirements are:

1) Wireless is an independent subnet from the wired, and is firewalled from
the wired LAN in the same way as the outside world.

2) Several open ports forwarded to not necessarily the same port on a
machine on the wired LAN (e.g. ports 80, 22, 443).

3) WPA encryption on wireless.

4) UPNP support (wired and wireless).

5) NAT/DHCP support (wired and wireless).

6) Prioritize all wired traffic over wireless.

7) Prioritize all SIP (VoIP) traffic (via wired) over everything else.

Basically, I want my VoIP line to get the best bandwidth available on the
external connection, wired to get priority over wireless, and wireless to
be firewalled from the external interface (no forwarded ports at all,
except UPNP), but wired firewalled from both wireless and external
interfaces (with some forwarded ports). I don't feel the need to run my own
DNS, though, just routing.

Did you also purge its dependencies and reinstalled from official repos?
I think the relevant dependencies are:
ffmpeg libavcodec51 libavdevice52 libavformat52 libavutil49
libpostproc51 libswscale0

but I would go for every dependency just to be sure. AFAIK, many users
are having the same problem and I think the recommendation from debian
is to use only official packages.

Of course you could also downgrade to last debian-multimedia compatible
version if you have other packages that depend on ffmpeg, libavcodec51
and friends.

There's a Debian packaged mencoder at debian-multimedia.org. Just add that
repository to your sources.list.

It's going to be. The AVI container format isn't suitable for the very
smallest file size, and you're setting a high bit rate.

Ogg Theora springs to mind. It's totally free (no patents, no nothing).
Quality is good, but ...

I'll bet you're using files from debian-multimedia.org. Their libraries are
no longer compatible with the VLC distributed with Debian. See the newsbox

What is the version of VLC? What distribution are you using?

I would try some other player like mplayer first.

This seems to be a problem between the official and debian-multimedia
packages. Try reinstalling all vlc dependencies from the official
repository and clearing the plugin cache with 'vlc
--reset-plugins-cache.

Google searching is (still?) primitive.

I would like to know the answer to a simple question:

What are the most recent laptops that run Linux *and* have a working

Listed by highest price first.

PS All the searching I have done lead me to believe that they don't

Help with VLC - no longer plays video files

Hi

I cannot seem to get VLC to display the video when I am playing it.
Instead, it only seems to play it as an audio file. The progress bar
moves, but there is no video display. The settings seem to be fine, at
least to my untutored eye. This is the same regardless of the format I
am playing *.flv, *.mpg, *.avi, *.wmv etc.

Any ideas what has happened here?

2.6.25 kernel on D820

2008-06-28 Thread Bart Schelstraete
Hello,

I've upgraded a Dell D820 (laptop) to 2.6.24 & 2.6.25 kernel with Debian (so
standard kernel).
But with that kernel, the machine doesn't boot anymore. He can't find the
disks (/dev/sda* in my case) anymore.
With the older 2.6.23, this still works.
Somebody who has the same problem?

In KDE Control Centre, look and see if the tick box in "Appearance &

Beyond, that, I'm not sure what it might be.

Sure! U do the coding at 1000kb/s
I remember that flv files (from youtube) are about 550Kb/s

try: ffmpeg -i file.flv to view the code

and try something like: ffmpeg -i source.flv -b 500k -vcodec mpeg4 -vtag
divx -acodec mp3 -ar 8000k -ab 64k destination.avi

and check size/quality

Funny issue here: when I launch gtk apps like Gimp, Sonata, gThumb from KMenu,

When I run from a terminal, all fine.
Created a new user account, fired up a kde session - all fine there, too.

I use mencoder RPM from Dag Wieers

Try the package (and app) DeVeDe. It only makes simple DVDs, but
does work, and will convert any video type into the correct format.

Good news: there's a check box to indicate if the input format is
VOB/MPEG-PS. That tells DeVeDe not to waste time converting to MPEG.

ripping a dvd I use dvdrip, it rips the dvd then uses transcode to create
a file, mpeg, avi, ogg. I store them on a hard drive, mythtv box, to
view so I haven't burned to dvd any of them. xine is my current favorite

Yes, genisoimage in debian will create dvd-video iso images which can

You need to create the dvd-video structure. dvdauthor is the tool from

Yes, it can. That said, whether or not it plays in a DVD player is more a
function of the file creation software than the burning software. So, if you
have files/filesystem images that play in DVD player, the burned DVD will
