Where has my Windows partition gone?

2010-11-14 Thread John O Laoi
Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions.

The issue is now solved.

I resolved it as follows:

# aptitude install os-prober (It was not installed)
# os-prober
# update-grub

"First, was windows menu there before? "
It was, and I don't know when or how it was deleted.
I assume that it happened during an update.
I can't say exactly when, as I haven't looked to use the windows
partition for a while.

Again, Thanks everyone.

John

Where has my Windows partition gone?

2010-11-13 Thread John O Laoi
Hello,
I have a dual boot laptop running squeeze.

I update regularly.

I rarely use the Windows partition – I have not used it for several months.

However, it now appears to be gone, according to grub.
At least, when I boot up, and get the blue screen with the list of
options, the Windows one is not there.
Instead I get a list of kernels

But “fdisk -l” says it is still there.

curious gnome desktop behaviour after upgrade

2010-05-26 Thread John O Laoi
> Then my vote goes to "sit and wait" :-)

I sat and waited and nothing happened.

Today, I did more Googleing and found a sledgehammer solution.

Go to runlevel 3 and login.
Then issue the command

$ rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd

Reboot.

Your gnome-panel settings will be reset to the defaults, but at least
things work again.

curious gnome desktop behaviour after upgrade

2010-05-05 Thread John O Laoi
Hello,

I am using squeeze on a dell laptop, and am using Gnome, as came with
the standard installation.

Yesterday, after a big “safe-upgrade” my desktop started to behave curiously.

When I open a console on the GUI and minimize it, it appears to go to
the bottom right corner, and then disappears completely.
Then the Panel on the top panel no longer functions.
Icons on the desktop continue to function.

If I open another app, all of the buttons on the top panel disappear,
except for the volume button.
Then the bottom panel becomes completely bank.

Any ideas what has happened?

downloaded .jnlp won't open

2010-04-27 Thread John O Laoi
I am using squeeze.

To join a webcast, I download a .jnlp file. ( I am using Iceweasel)

When it is finished downloading, a pop-up box offers me to open it
with "Sun Java 6 Web Start (default)".

I accept, and then I get a number of errors, with the heading
"Application error - unable to launch the application"

When I enquired with the supplier, I was told that I need
to have the Java Runtime Environment from www.java.com installed.

I am probably trying to open the .jnlp with the wrong Java.

Questions:
How do install the java from www.java.com using aptitude?

How do I ensure that this is the Java that is automatically chosen
from within Iceweasel to open .jnlp file?

Try
tcpdump host and port 4957

This will grab all packets to and from the server, which are to or
from port 4957

If you want traffic in one direction only, you can use "src host" or
"dst host" instead of "host", and/or
"src port" or "dst port" instaed of "port".

You could add -s 0 to ensure you grab entire packets regardless of
size, and -v, -vv or -vvv if you need more details on packets.

iceweasel broken after update

2009-12-08 Thread John O Laoi
Hello,

I am using squeeze on kernel 2.6.30-2-686 on a dell precision laptop

After running aptitude safe-upgrade yesterday, and accepting all of
the suggestions,
iceweasel appears broken today.

When I start it I get a screen with the message

“Well, this is embarrassing.
Iceweasel is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is
usually caused by a recently opened web page.
You can try:
Removing one or more tabs that you think may be causing the problem
Starting an entirely new browsing session”

On opening a new session, when I browse to a new page, other than the
home page, iceweasel dies.

Should I just do the following?

aptitude remove iceweasel
aptitude install iceweasel

vmware after kernel upgrade on lenny

2009-11-04 Thread John O Laoi
Hello

I am using lenny.
I tried to use vmware workstation, and I got an error to the effect
that it could not find kernel headers.

So a little Googling told me that I had to do

aptitude install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

and
/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl
But the above file did not exist.

So, I ran vmware again, and it told me that several modules need to be
compiled and installed, to which I pressed INSTALL. It asked me for
the root password, which I supplied, and a box with the heading
“vmware kernel module updater” appeared, which had 6 categories:
Virtual Machine Monitor
Virtual Network Device
Vmware blocking filesystem etc.

On compileing the first, it stepped immediately with an error.
The error said to look in the file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-6425.log.
This file contains the following:

overhead projector unclear under lenny

2009-09-24 Thread John O Laoi
Hello,
I moved my laptop to lenny last May. Before that, it had been using etch.
It is a DELL Precision M65. It has a 15.4" WUXGA (1920 x 1200) LCD Screen.

On moving, I noticed that it had very few screen resolutions,
so I editedxorg.conf to add a few.
Everything worked fine, until I connected an overhead projector
yesterday, for the first time under lenny.
The picture produced by the overhead is very unclear.

With WINDOWS on the same laptop, the picture on the overhead projector is clear.
The picture used to be clear under etch.
I tried another overhead projector, and saw the same unclear picture.

I have tried reducing the resolution on the Display, and it has not helped.

The following is the relevant section of xorg.conf:

Section "Screen"

Identifier "Default Screen"

Monitor "Configured Monitor"

Thanks Frank.
Indeed there was DHCP processes running:

# ps aux | grep dhc
root 3650 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?Z08:31 0:00
[dhclient]
root 4044 0.0 0.0 2204 608 ?S

static ip address is being reset constantly

2009-09-04 Thread John O Laoi
Hello,
A question for networking gurus:
My ip address keeps on being set to null at my workplace.

I use my laptop at home and work.
At home, I use DHCP to get an ip address from my ISP. No problems.
At work, when I use
#dhclient eth0
it looks for DHCP leases but finds none.

So, I have a little script which I use to set a static address (I have
been given one to use):

ifconfig eth0 XXX.YYY.ZZZ.WWW netmask 255.255.255.0 up

route add default gw XXX.YYY.ZZZ.1

echo "nameserver XXX.YYY.AAA.BBB" >> /etc/resolv.conf

I run this script, but after approx 20 seconds the connection is gone
and when I run

# ifconfig eth0

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:15:ZZ:AA:BB:CC

  inet6 addr: fe71::205:c5ff:fecc:9284/64 Scope:Link

UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

  RX packets:5729 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

  TX packets:9435 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

  collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

  RX bytes:4332002 (4.1 MiB) TX bytes:1830420 (1.7 MiB)

  Interrupt:18

Some daemon is resetting the NIC address to null.

I tried editing /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/init.d/networking restart.

I also ensured that my wireless was turn off.

What could be causing this?

how to start paros?

2009-06-11 Thread John O Laoi
Solved now.
This was dealt with in bug Bug#532194.
To start paros in squeeze, use

can't get printer to work after dist upgrade

2009-06-06 Thread John O Laoi
I solved this one.

The following were the steps:

 $ wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz  http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz
$ tar zxf foo2zjs.tar.gz
cd foo2zjz
make
make install
make install install-hotplug
make install cups

RESTART CUPS:/etc/init.d/cups restart

In CUPS, I has to do the following:
Add printer
Device: HP Laserjet 1005 USB #1 (HP Laserjet M1005)
On the next screen, I added a PPD file, from the location

foo2zjs/PPD/HP-LaserJet_M1005_MFP.ppd

This worked!

how to start paros?

2009-06-05 Thread John O Laoi
Hi
I am using squeezef.
I installed paros proxy with aptitude install paros.
After some googleing, I found that to start Paros, I needed to use

sh /usr/share/paros/startserver.sh

This told me that it could not find the file paros.jar,
so I edited to the file to point to its location,
ie I changed the line
java -jar paros.jar
 TO
java -jar /usr/share/java/paros.jar

Now, I am getting the following error:

$ sh   /usr/share/paros/startserver.sh

can't get printer to work after dist upgrade

2009-06-05 Thread John O Laoi
Hello,

Yesterday, I did a dist upgrade from lenny to squeeze.
I edited sources.list, changes lenny to squeeze everywhere, and then did
aptitude update
aptitude install apt dpkg aptitude
aptitude full-upgrade

I also installed a lot of upgrades to packages, as suggested by synaptic.

Everything seems OK, except that I can't get my printer to work.

The printer is a HP Laserjet 1005 MFP, which can print, copy and scan,
and is connected to the computer via USB.

To get the printer to work in lenny, I did the following:

wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz
tar zxf foo2zjs.tar.gz
cd foo2zjz
make
make install
make install install-hotplug
make install cups
/etc/init.d/cups restart

When I noticed that the printer was not working in squeeze, I tried
cd foo2zjz
make uninstall
and then doing the above steps again.
I also tried removing the printer in CUPS and adding it again.

I notice one difference between lenny and squeeze:
In squeeze, when I attach the printer's USB cable xsane automatically
starts up – this did not happen in lenny.

Any ideas?

recursive grep and openoffice

2009-03-18 Thread John O Laoi
Thanks for all of your replies.
I didn't know that tools such as tracker would search with openoffice
document.

With respect to the command line, I have fixed on

 find . -name *.odt -exec sh -c 'unzip -c "{}" content.xml | grep
"string-being sought" > /dev/null' \; -print

but it returns immediately, and seems to do no searching.

To my amateur eyes, it looks like it should work. I've done some searching,
but to no avail.

Anybody got ideas?

recursive grep and openoffice

2009-03-16 Thread John O Laoi
Hello,

I sometimes need to find a file, and I only know of some text contained
therein.

So I launch a search as follows:

 $ grep -r "text i am looking for" /home/john

 OR

 $ find /home/john -type f -exec grep -i * **"text i am looking for" * '{}'
\; -print

where /home/john is my home directory.

The problem is that this does not search within .odt openoffice files.

It will located any .doc files that contain the string, but not openoffice
files.

This is a big nuisance, as most of my files are now .odt files.

Some research has let me know that openoffice files are zip files that
contain other files.

I am using etch (soon to upgrade).

Has anybody got a solution that will recursively search a directory looking
for a file that contains some specified text, and will search within
openoffice file?

automounting in xfce

2008-08-23 Thread John O Laoi
Thanks to everyone.

Problem solved.

Yes, I misunderstood "fdisk -l". I assumed that it would list

the CD partition also.

I never even tried to mount the CD, as I thought that when

it was not being seen by fdisk, it was not there, and there was nothing to
mount.

Also I've learned how to install from another version of debian,

although it appears that this is not recommended.

 So, mount /media/cdrom0 worked perfectly,

and after installing hal, I could see the CD icon on the desktop.

Thanks again.

automounting in xfce

2008-08-20 Thread John O Laoi
Hi,

I want to set up automounting on my etch system, which is using XFCE4.

Basically, I want my CDs and flash devices to automount when I insert them.

I have done some googeling, and it seems that I need to use Thunar's volume
manager, and do the following in Thunar:

Edit | Preferences, Click on Advanced Tab, Select 'Enable Volume Manager',
Configure

 However, when I go

Edit | Preferences | Advanced

I see nothing except "Folder Permissions"

 Any hints?

How to proceed?

vmware questions

2008-05-09 Thread John O Laoi
Hi,

I am running debian etch on a dell laptop which is dual boot with XP.

I rarely, if ever, use XP.

However, I now need to use an application, as part of a course I am doing,

which only runs on Windows.

So, I've decided to put vmware on etch and run XP from that.

(I know about WINE, but I'd prefer to go the vmware route, as I want to get
familiar with vmware.)

I've googled and seen some articles on installing vmware-server and
vmware-tools.

My work has a vmware image of XP which I can use.

(We also have a vmware licence.)

However, I think that it might be better if I proceed by

(1) creating a vmware image of my existing XP, (as it has all of the drivers
etc. for my hardware.)

(2) putting that vmware image on etch

(3) install vmware on etch

(4) reformat the XP partitions, and use them for etch.

 Some questions:

   1.

anybody got any links on how to achieve (1) above
   2.

What vmware software should I install? I see that there is
   vmware-desktop, wmware-player, vmware-server etc. and I'm confused. Any good
links on how to install this?
   3.

How will I get that vmware to open the XP image – is it just a matter of
   File|Open?
   4.

I see that there is no debian package for vmware. Will installing it
   interfere with aptitude?

 Thanks in advance

 John

networking: fixed ip address and dhcp

2007-11-26 Thread John O Laoi
I have a dell laptop on which I have just performed a basic install of
etch using netinstall, on which I installed xfce.
(I did have gnome, but I needed to repartition, so i decided to try xfce.)

The problem is now with my networking
At home, I use dhcp - no problem.
When I bring the laptop to work, I use fixed ip addressing.

I used to have a file which contained

ifconfig eth1 XXX.YYY.ZZZ.WWW netmask 255.255.255.0
route add default gw XXX.YYY.ZZZ.1
cat "seach " >> /etc/resolv.conf
cat "nameserver AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD" >> resolv.conf

which I would simply sudo when I get to work and I got my static ip
address networking to work.

This does not work now - I can't ping out.
When I run ifconfig at the command line, it gives me the correct ip
address, and tells me that it is up.

The /etc/network/interfaces file is

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
allow-hotplug eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp

I did a very basic install – maybe something is missing.
any ideas?

~$ rsync -avh AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD:/home/john/Documents/ ./Documents/
Password:

But the file ~/Documents/X/Y/ZZZ.ods on the machine I am issuing the

What am I doing wrong?

sound recording on dell laptop

2007-10-16 Thread John O Laoi
I am using etch on a Dell Precision M65 laptop, which has an internal
microphone.
How do I get the sound recording function to work?

I have run alsaconf.
When I try to record, I use the graphical sound recorder
with "record from input" set to "capture" and "record as" set to WAV.
I have turned up the recording volume in the capture tab in "volume
control".

When I click on "record", it says that it is recording, but when I try to
"play" the
interface indicates that it is playing, but there is no sound.
The sound card is working well for other apps.

Then, I brought the file to SUSE, and did the same thing there, using vi,
saved it as text
and brought it back to Etch, and it opened in less than a second.
All very mysterious.
Anyway, problem solved in the end.
Thanks for your help.

How do I do that?

That is what has me baffled - there are no images or anything else in the
file.
It has some email addresses - maybe openoffice is trying to open an email
application for each of these.

It is a file that is frequently used. I don't know how to check if it is in
zlib.

The desktop is 2.8Ghz and has 1MB memory. The laptop is 1.8GHz and has the
same memory.
There is no difference between these two machines in opening any other file.

It is, but only on opening this file.

Openoffice file takes a long time to open

2007-09-26 Thread John O Laoi
Hello,
I am running Etch on a Dell Precision laptop.
I have one openoffice file, say XYZ.odt, which takes a long time to open
(maybe 25 minutes).
While it is opening, Openoffice is stalled.
It is not big. ls-l reports its size as 18,000.
I have many much bigger files which open immediately.

I copied the file to SUSE linux that I have on a desktop, and the file
opened quickly.
I tried changing its name.
I tried copying its contents to a new file.
I made a copy of the file (using cp).
I had some URLs in the file, which I changed to text (removed the blue and
underline)
I ran fsck on the filesystem on which it resides, and it reported no bad
blocks.

Any ideas where I look?

CUPS is working again, and ifconfig reports lo as well as eth1.
Thanks everyone for your help.

No, when I run ifconfig, it only gives details for eth1.
There is nothing much in /var/log/syslog

can't access localhost

2007-09-20 Thread John O Laoi
I am new to Debian. I installed Etch on a Dell precision laptop. I use DHCP.

I have lots of questions, but I will start with this one:

I created an iptables script that I downloaded, and set it up using

# update-rc.d firewall.script defaults

However, after doing this, I noticed that CUPS would not work. (It had been
working well.)

The firefox browser returned the message "The server at localhost is taking
too long to respond." when I tried to connect to http://localhost:631.

I also tried http://127.0.0.1:631, and it gave the same responce.

I also could not ping localhost or 127.0.0.1.

So I removed the firewall using

# update-rc.d -f firewall.script remove

and rebooted.

Now, when I run

# iptables -L

I get

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)

target prot opt source destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)

target prot opt source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)

target prot opt source destination

*However, I still can't access CUPS or ping localhost.*

 What might be wrong?

Where do I start to look?

 John
