It doesn't render them at all, unless you have a suitable plugin

was due to removal (in many distros) of a package required by the Fancy

Hi Philipp,

I don't have a very long and intense experience with Ansible.

It doesn't seem complex to me, you have to use the same logic as if you were
doing it manually.
The biggest problem I have encountered is modifying a configuration file whose
different cases are complex. Even with another method, it would be.

Hi folks,

is ansible a easy way to configure customized hosts?
First try, its super complicated for me.

Trying to create multiple files with content. It takes more time to create the
playbook then creating this file by hand (this damn syntax acomplicates
everything more)
Then formatting is destroyed or need more time on creating the playbook...

It is so hard or im so bad?

Re: Switching from Kubuntu to Debian(latest version)

2020-05-16 Thread thierry . leurent
You have 2 solutions :

- Install Debian as a third os, and copy all you need from Ubuntu.
- Change your Ubuntu to Debian. To do this you must :

   - Choose the version of Debian, you need to use.

   - Choose your new graphical environment.
   - Adapt your repositories, clean and update your packages database.
   - Update Apt application.
   - Upgrade your app.

Yes. Copy all of your Data files to an external device... such as a USB
drive.**

for your Kubuntu they are Probably all in the /home directory

for Windows I am not familiar on where they are kept.

When you have them ALL safely copied off machine then proceed with
whatever method you like to install Debian.

After your install, form a Backup Plan for your Data (all of your
personal files), and Use that Backup routine Frequently.**
Best of luck!.

PS: installing Windows again may be a challenge. Figure out how to do
that First.
**system install is trivial, your Data is not replaceable. Backup!

I've been using apt (and friends) to maintain my systems, including
python. Today I discovered the Debian version of the more-itertools
module is on version 4.2.0 and is three years old. Meanwhile, the
version documented on pypi.org is at version 8.2.0, and has at least one
recipe whose arguments are in a different order from the Debian

6.0.0). This causes problems, as you might imagine, with other modules!

So... do people generally use pip to maintain their python libraries,

ltrace -tt -n4 -S /usr/bin/gimp outputs a lot lines and the last one is
like:

10:01:04.820439 SYS_futex(0x7f8d0648a9d0, 0, 6356, 0

strace -f /usr/bin/gimp also outputs a lot lines and the last ones are
like:

[pid 6789] futex(0x7f1d25b6b9d0, FUTEX_WAIT, 6791, NULL
[pid 6791] futex(0x7f1d3d401968, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NULL

'ps aux' tells me that one of the pid is gimp, and the other one is not
existing. So it could be that Gimp is just waiting for a dead process.
I don't know how to identify this dead process.

I looked for a way to force Gimp to run on a single thread and Google
pointed me to this URL:

https://superuser.com/questions/692138/how-to-force-a-process-to-run-on-a-single-thread-only-with-numactl

So I tried:

numactl --physcpubind=+1 /usr/bin/gimp

and Gimp works :-)

Of course I still don't know what the root cause of the problem is...

Many many thanks for your help and suggestions :-)

I've done this purge / autoremove / install sequence again, adding a
purge of the configuration files of absolutely all uninstalled packages
on my system after the autoremove, without success.

I've done a fresh install of Debian stable + dist-upgrade to Sid on my

Even after killing the instance or after rebooting, Gimp still doesn't

I've tried purging Gimp and some dependencies, and then reinstalling
Gimp but it still doesn't work:

apt-get purge ufraw gimp gimp-data gimp-ufraw libgimp2.0 \
libgimp2.0-dev libgimp2.0-doc

apt-get autoremove

apt-get install gimp

I have two Debian sid installations: One main installation (on my
internal hard drive) and a secondary installation (on an external USB
hard drive). I dist-upgrade those two installations almost
simultaneously, approximately once a week. So they're like twins. I
don't use Gimp regularly on the secondary installation but I've
verified: it's also affected by the problem.

I will probably end up doing a system reinstall on the external
hard drive and see what happens.

Thank you all anyway for your help!

Yes, I noticed that the toolbox has changed with 2.10 two months ago.
There was also a new issue with the gimp-ufraw plugin, forcing the user
to use the standalone ufraw application instead. But Gimp was usable.

Now it is totally unusable for me. A 'ps -ef' shows a gimp process
running but I don't see any windows in any workspace. A 'xwininfo -tree
-root' does not list any Gimp windows. Launching Gimp from a terminal
does not give any error message.

It was even simpler than that: slightly enlarging the window makes the
message visible.

For a reason I don't understand (related to the font ?), the xmessage
window now opens with a dimension which is slightly too small and this
makes the text totally invisible and unselectable.

I can work around that by using the -geometry option in the xmessage
command line and requiring a sufficient dimension:

xmessage -geometry 700x68+300+600 "My message"

Thank to all for your help.

Unreadable xmessage (sid)

2016-01-16 Thread Thierry Rascle
Hi list,

xmessage does not work properly any more on my sid system. The window
is displayed as expected, it has a working okay button, but the actual
message is not readable. It could be that the message is displayed in
the background color, making it invisible.

I have a custom .Xresources file. Removing it does not solve the issue.

I have made a capture of the window:
http://thierr26.free.fr/img/broken_xmessage.png

Does anyone experience the same issue or have any clue about what is
happening ?

I guess a very recent package upgrade caused the problem but I am
unable to tell which one. xmessage is provided by package x11-utils
which has not been upgraded recently.

I'm using xmonad as my only window manager and desktop environment. My
other applications are working properly.

Anyone having troubles with autofs and NTFS formatted drives on Jessie/sid ?

2014-11-16 Thread Thierry Rascle
Hi list,

I'm using sid, with wmii as my only window manager and desktop
environment.

I'm using autofs for automounting my external devices:
- CD/DVD drives,
- USB sticks formatted as FAT or NTFS,
- external hard disk drives formatted has EXT4 or NTFS. or NTFS),
CD-ROM drives, external hard disk drives).

I dist-upgrade my system very regularly.

The automounting used to work perfectly for all my external devices,
but since a few weeks (or perhaps a few months), it does not work any
more with my NTFS formatted devices. I have to manually mount them
instead.

Does any one have the same issue ? I can't find any post or bug report
about that. I can't tell which package upgrade caused the issue. I
believe it is not an upgrade of the autofs package that caused the
issue because the autofs package has not been upgraded since March
2014.

I have not changed my autofs configuration files recently, so I don't
believe they're the cause of the issue.

My /etc/auto.master file contains one line:
/var/autofs/removable /etc/auto.removable
--timeout=2,sync,nodev,nosuid

The /etc/auto.removable has the following entries:
chikai -fstype=iso9660,ro,sync,nodev,nosuid:/dev/chikai
chil-fstype=ntfs,gid=46,dmask=002,fmask=113 :/dev/chil
eos_digital
-fstype=vfat,gid=46,dmask=002,fmask=113 :/dev/eos_digital
nikon_d200
-fstype=vfat,gid=46,dmask=002,fmask=113 :/dev/nikon_d200 fao
-fstype=vfat,gid=46,dmask=002,fmask=113 :/dev/fao ikki
-fstype=ntfs,gid=46,dmask=002,fmask=113 :/dev/ikki jacala
-fstype=iso9660,ro,sync,nodev,nosuid:/dev/jacala buldeo
-fstype=iso9660,ro,sync,nodev,nosuid:/dev/buldeo kaa
-fstype=vfat,gid=46,dmask=002,fmask=113 :/dev/kaa mao
-fstype=vfat,gid=46,dmask=002,fmask=113 :/dev/mao nag
-fstype=ntfs,gid=46,dmask=002,fmask=113 :/dev/nag medianavmp3
-fstype=vfat,gid=46,dmask=002,fmask=113 :/dev/medianavmp3
akela2_root -fstype=ext4:/dev/akela2_root
akela2_home -fstype=ext4:/dev/akela2_home
akela2_tmp -fstype=ext4:/dev/akela2_tmp
akela2_usr -fstype=ext4:/dev/akela2_usr
akela2_var -fstype=ext4:/dev/akela2_var

The automounting used to work for all of the entries, but now does not
for the three entries with "-fstype=ntfs".

Note that the associated devices in /dev are still created properly
when the devices are plugged in, so I don't suspect a udev related
issue.

In PPD there is:

It will depend on the device.

My Android phone works very simply: connect it, it asks you if you want to
turn on USB storage. then you can access the phone as a USB stick.

My tablet, unfortunately, is setup to work as an MTP device, I know I had
found instructions to access it from Linux (I don't use Gnome, and the device
has an SD card, so what I do is transfer with the SD card).

I would not call a 256 BG SSd "small" - the biggest I own is 60GB, and all the
system runs on it (on a laptop).

Anyway, my systems never had /boot + /usr bigger than 50GB, so I could happily
save money there :)

It's been a long time since I felt my computer was slow, I'm not after winning

I don't know how many partitions I can create without UEFI/GPT, but the only
limitation I ran into was that of *primary* partitions

Well, that's anything but a standard situation. I've only used GPT for
Hackintoshes, I stopped using Windows in 1992 (yep, windows 3.0) and I can't
figure out why I would install another *nix-like system (except for fun and
discovery, but I have enough older computers around to dedicate one to this
sort of trial. Any OS that *requires* a primary partition to install is badly
coded, or old (or both...).

So this for me sums up the question: if your computer is to run linux only (as
was the OP's), there is no reason to use UEFI/GPT but for the need for
partitions over 2 TB.

For complex setups, it may be of interrest.

AFAIK it could be usefull for *very* big disks (but I can't see their use on a
laptop).

Other than that, I can see only multiboot systems (Hackintoshes need it). I
don't really know about Win8 - that I don't have or use. My undestanding is
that *pre-installed* Windows 8 require UEFI & secure boot. But I once
downloaded a test version of Win 8 Enterprise (free from M$) and it installed
perfectly (well... as perfectly as Windows can) on the IDE harddisk of an
older dual-core machine, with, as far as I know, no UEFI (at least none I
could turn on/off).

That's not true. For some reason M$ makes it very complicated, but I have a

Look on the web and you should find how. I find it's a lot better than to run

Yes, this is one problem. There are others:

- what documentation is existent is not easy to undestand, syntax is
complicated. Trial and error is not good when you're playing with your boot
manager.

- Grub ('s developpers) is patronizing: why make it so difficult to install on
a partition? To tell you it's not reliable is one thing, to try and forbid it
is another.

- Assuming that UUIDs are "better" is just one way to look at it. That's right
for people who add disks to a computer. Clone a disk and you'll be happy
you used labels

While I do see the power of Grub 2, I too wish we could go back to the
efficience and simplicity of Grub 1.

And I don't know if this is Grub or the distribution, but I've regularely
experienced "MS-like" behaviour: you tell the installer to put Grub on the
root partition, but it does install on your MBR.

Hi Andrei,

Maybe I was not clear. I have several machines, all running either the same
version of Linux, with (seems) the same fonts, or sometime a slightly
different (e.g. upgraded) version of Linux. Or simply I update Libre Office.

And every time, I have to reformat the whole document, because the same font
does not take the same space. This is frustrating an time consuming. Pictures
move, end of page moves, page numbers change...

For example I don't update Libre Office before July because I have lots of
documents that I probably need to reformat if I update, and I'll do that
during the hollyday, for the next school year.

I would expect a document to remain the same as long as I stay on the same
platform. Of course, changing to Mac or Windows I do expect to reformat (and
I use PDF as far as I can).

Regards,

Thierry

Never had this one. Reading the thread you give, it look as:

- it happens with the Windows version
- it happens when you use the *.docx format

Now, as far as I am concerned, I can't see the point of using the *.docx
format for work, as it is a non-native, non-free format.

As to using Windows...

My main concern with LibreOffice is that formatting is not consistent if you
copen your document on another machine, but th'sts another story.

Further, there does seem to be any fix for your bug (in LibreOffice), so how
could it be applied on stable?

WIth apt-get you must know what to type, this is not easy if you don't use it
frequently.

Having looked nearer at aptitude, I will sure "play" with it on some
seconcondary machine before typing "g" "g" on my main machine because if it
removes over 700 packages and I overlooked something, I'd better have a
backup (which I do have, actually :).

Synaptic is easy to use and it does usually a good job at adding/removing
stuff provided with the distribution, but it easily creates broken or
problematic situation.

My problem, as far as I can track it down, comes from a mix of (personnal)
problems:

- this was a clean wheezy install
- I upgraded my machine to a haswell board, so I had to istall a backport
kernel
- I also wanted to try different database solutions that required newer libc6
versions, that I had to get from testing

I guess no Debian package manager likes this mix of origins. I took a look at
pinning, but there is no simple solution there either.

Upgrading to a full Jessie might be a solution, but I use (and love, and am
not about to change) Trinity Desktop as my DE, and there is no jessie support
yet (I could not get the nightly builds to install compeletly).

So the problem ultimately comes from a typical Debian problem, which is also
one of Debian's plus points (I'm not ranting, it's a fact): Wheezy is a
little more than one year old, but developpers didn't stop in 2013. Stable
kernel is at 3.12 (longterm), new hardware is being build in our computers.
Wether software requires the lastest libraries or the developper just used
them I don't know (sometimes just linking the new libname to an an older lib
works...).

So what I discovered is: don't believe those that say "just add this
repository and pull that stuff from testing/unstable". While it *may* work,
it ends up putting your system in a dead end.

This being said, "pure" wheezy simply can't work on my machine (no graphics,
no network, not even a hard disc...) so the only other choice is another
distribution until Jessie becomes stable.

I can't stand Ubuntu(s), but openSuSE ssems OK (even if i had a hell of a time
getting gscan2pdf to work). Zypper and Yast have their problems too,
anyway...

Life would be boring if there where not the computers :))

Package system totaly a complete mess

2014-06-07 Thread Thierry de Coulon
Hello all,

I've lived for years using synaptic and I am no so used to aptitude - and I
don't want to make mistakes...

Possibly my installation is now in such a state that I should reinstall, but
everything *is* working. Anyway:

- searching for broken packages gives 0 packages in synatiptic but 6 packages
in aptitude.

- marking upgradable packages causes both to want to remove lots of things
(including parts of cups, Gimp, and of cours all my DE).

- If I try to update with aptitude it gives me a liste of packages that should
be "removed because they are no more used", which is nonsense because most of
them ARE in current use.

I am thinking all this comes from the fact that I installed Wheezy with Gnome,
installed another DE, then removed *parts* of gnome, and the system is
thinking because part of Gnome is missing, it should clean up and remove
anything that needs it (the list of removal is long, but does include gftp
and so). Whats more, the system seems not logical, as it wants to remove Gimp
but complains that gimp-data (not to be removed) needs Gimp

Any way to bring this mess in order?

Thierry

That's like Frank's symphony that was "not a symphony" because he gave the
theme to the "wrong" instrument in the second movement.

Who cares if "it's a DE" or not if it does all one expects from one?

Pitivi or Openshot require removing cups !?

2014-05-24 Thread Thierry de Coulon
I wanted to take a look at Pitivi and Openshot, but both installation require
removing *lots* of important things like cups and gimp ?!?

I run wheezy, with some backports (required by my motherboard) and a newer
version of glibc (to run Master PDF Editor). I can live without these two
programs, but I don't understand why installing them needs removing cups, for
example.

Is this a bug against ledgersmb? (was: getting started with ledgersmb)

 Hi list
Trying to install ledgersmb from sid I got error 404: no such file..., when

I read the Debian doc a bit more and I found in file:

About installation
The easiest is to use the setup.pl script as root. You don't need to
know very much about

So I did and got the following error:

perl setup.pl
Error: No workflow script specified
Compilation failed in require at setup.pl line 8.

Setup.pl :

#!/usr/bin/perl

use FindBin;
BEGIN {
  lib->import($FindBin::Bin) unless $ENV{mod_perl}

require 'lsmb-request.pl';

So it's calling lsmb-request.pl at line 8

Here it is:

getting started with ledgersmb

2014-05-02 Thread Thierry Chatelet
Hi list
I installed ledgersmb from sid package. I tried to connect to it using
localhost:ledgersmb/setup.pl as stated in many tutorial.I got 'not found'.
All tutorials I found are for ubuntu, none for debian. Anyway, I tried
changing the ownership of /usr/share/ledgersmb as stated in those
tutorials. I still got the same error.
Now those tuto ask to copy some files from the /usr/share/ledgersmb
folder into /etc/apache2/ folder. But I cannot find the files!!
Any one succeed at getting access to it?

No, I guess most of the people writing in their native language on this
list do it because they have subscribed to this list and the one in their
language, and they make an error. it happen to me both ways, french
on the english list and vice-versa. It even happen that I answered a
question in french on the french list, in english. When one is switching
language very often (many time in a hour) well, sometimes things dont
come out the way they should!!!

Yes, but if you go there:http://lists.debian.org/users.html the title for say
debian-user-french is: debian-user in French
so one should write in french.
If you look at debian-user, the title is: Help and discussion among users
of Debian,
so there is no mention of which language to use on this list. I guess this
is a bug, but strickly speaking, one could use any language here and
not breaking the code of conduct.

Did not notice your question before!!

Well my 2 cents:
I had the same cellphone. Never manage to connect it under wheezy. Use to work
fine under squeeze. Then, I don't remember the bug, but I read it long ago, and
there is not much hope to have it fix has the maintener stop maintening the
faulty package. As I had a squeeze machine, I used it for my cellphone, until I
changed it.

I dont understand what you are saiing. From wikipedia here is the definition of
mbr:
A master boot record (MBR) is a type of boot sector popularized by the IBM
Personal Computer.[1] It consists of a sequence of 512 bytes located at the
first sector of a data storage device such as a hard disk. MBRs are usually
placed on storage devices intended for use with IBM PC-compatible systems

So no wonder you can't put grub on 512 bytes. I would try, usind an install
iso,
to chroot into your system and reinstall grub.

Wake on lan is not OS dependant, it is hardware dependant. See:

Use to be a problem if you have and network-manager. maybe it is solved now, I
don't know. In any case you can purge purge network-manager, it will purge sone
20 something packages with it, but it's ok. Don't forget to go to preferences
in
wicd and indicate wlan0 as a wireless interface.
