Kernel 2.6.3 i810fb console crash after X logout

2004-08-05 Thread Arunprakash S
Hi,

The console is good while booting.
After logging in the X server and
logging out and switching to console,
the console display gets corrupted.

Also while booting I am getting a white
patch near the penguin logo. But disappears
after a while.

I am using grub for booting with the following
options for i810fb

video=i810fb:xres=800:yres=600:bpp=16:vram=2:
hsync1=30:hsync2=55:vsync1=50:vsync2=120:mtrr

But If I change to 1024x768 with the other
options as the same, there is no such problem.

Please help me out.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Arunprakash.

I wrote this document.
It documents how to convert to software raid, not how to install directly
to software raid.
While it's possible to install directly to software raid, I have not
documented it.
The biggest recurring problem is:
Kernel does not have software raid loaded as module or compiled into kernel.

Trust me the directions on the document are correct as i've had hundreds
of people use it.
Try installing to a normal non-raid, then covert to software raid, this
will help you understand the process.
Then once you understand the process, determine how to install directly to
software raid in the installer.
Then send me the directions on what you did to install direct from the
installer, and I will include them in the document.
Contact me with any further questiosn concerning this, thanks.

Howto install Debian Sarge kernel 2.6.3 on Software RAID1?

2004-05-19 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

Is there someone that has Debian Sarge with kernel 2.6.3 (from the installer
beta 4) installed on a software RAID1 and is willing to hare his/her
knowledge with me how to do that?

I have followed the procedures as described in:

1. Software-RAID-HOWTO
2.
http://groups.google.nl/groups?hl=nl&lr=&ie=UTF-8&frame=right&th=b3f10d4e0d28cf21&seekm=1DRsb-4hi-5%40gated-at.bofh.it#link1
3. http://alioth.debian.org/projects/rootraiddoc/

But nothing seems to work. Is it possible e.g. you have it up and runnning?

TIA

Did you build your kernel yourself? Did you include support for Unix
domain sockets? I suspect yes and no, respectively ;-)

Hi,
I removed the accel option and this resolved the issue. Not sure why it
never happend with lilo.

Kernel 2.6.3 i810fb Block Cursor

2004-03-18 Thread Patrick Beard
Hi,
I've been using the i810fb in kernel 2.6.x with no problems on sarge.
Below is the append line I used in Lilo;
video=i810fb:vram:2,xres:1024,yres:768,bpp:16,hsync1:30,hsync2:55,vsync1
:50,vsync2:85,accel,mtrr
(note: The hsync and vsync are not the actual values. I'm not at my
system and can't remember what they are.)

Last night I switched from using lilo to grub. everything went ok. I
added the above to my grub config and rebooted. The console is fine
except for one thing. I get what appears to be a block cursor in the
middle of the screen. When I log in, the cursor stays in the middle of
the screen until I hit enter, it then jumps to the bottom left. From
then on it sort of follows what I type but not quite, it remains
somewhat out of sync with where the cursor should actually be. I tried
using 'hwcur' on the above but this didn't do anything.

I'm using the same parameters that I used with lilo, yet I never had
this issue.

Apart from switching back to lilo, is there anything I can try to
resolve this?

TIA

Paddy

Quake3 in kernel 2.6.3+

2004-03-13 Thread Sridhar M.A.
I am facing this peculiar problem under the following kernels:

2.4.25, 2.6.3, 2.6.4

I can compile the kernel and install it. Everything runs fine, including
sound from programs like mpg321, xmms, mplayer, et al. Quake3 runs,
display is fine, but no sound :-( I see a /dev/dsp borken pipe in the
terminal window from where I have launched Quake3.

The previous versions, 2.4.24 and 2.6.2 did not exhibit this problem.

Anyone else facing such a problem?

For the record: System: ASUS A7N266, Athlon 1800XP
OS: Debian Sarge
Sound Driver: Alsa, intel 810 audio
Graphics: Onboard Nforce2

I also got the "I cannot find nvidia.ko" message. I found out that I was
trying to compile the drivers with a different version of gcc that my kernel
was compiled with. Making sure that that both the nvidia drivers and kernel
were compiled with the same version of gcc made the problem go away.

Hope this helps,

I don't know if the following answers a question of yours, but in alsa
as become part of the 2.6 kernel. So from now on, you have to select
alsa from "make xconfig". (while preparing to compile the kernel)

Searching google you can find much info on your nvidia problem. I know
toob little to judge what is goo and what is bad, so I will just give
you this senseless link :)

kernel 2.6.3 problem

2004-03-10 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Hi,
I'm using Debian sarge. Installing the latest kernel-2.6.3 image from Debian's
repository, I get the following annoying messages flooded over my console. It, AFAIK,
doesn't harm, but flood the complete screen.

Mar 11 01:17:48 server kernel: printk: 3031 messages suppressed.
Neighbour table overflow.

A little bit of googling pointed me out to this:
http://www.linuxgazette.com/book/view/509

Following the instructions, I enabled "ARP Daemon Support" in the kernel and installed
arpd. But still I keep getting those messages.

Any help appreciated.

You may have forgotten to load the appropriate module - I've noticed
that 2.6.3 hasn't been as good at autoloading modules as 2.4 was. Try
sd_mod and usb_storage.

By the way, using udev is recommended when dealing with USB devices -
this way the appropriate device files appear and disappear as you plug
and unplug USB devices. This makes it easier to find the device you
just plugged in. And you can also name them conveniently if you take a
little time to learn how to write udev rules and steal device
information using udevinfo.

The first error is a non-fatal error telling you mikmod isn't installed.
If you don't know what mods (in the music sense) are, I wouldn't worry
about it.

The second one is XMMS complaining it can't access the ALSA mixer. This
could mean one of several things.
1) ALSA, or it's driver for your sound card wasn't compilied in, or as a
module. Check your config.
2) You don't have permissions to access the devices. This shouldn't be a
problem if it worked before. Check that you have permission to use the
devices in /dev/snd/. If you followed standard Debian pratice, this
means that you are part of group audio.
3) The various ALSA start scripts have buggered things up again. This
seems to happen to me far too often. Have a look in /etc/init.d/alsa*
and see what happens when you run them as root.

It's most likely 1. Either ALSA isn't loaded, your hardware's driver
isn't loaded, or it's a module, and you haven't loaded it.

XMMS Error After Compile of kernel 2.6.3

2004-03-07 Thread Alexander B. Cheng
Hello All,

I've just compiled kernel 2.6.3 and have things running pretty well.
However now when I try to start XMMS I get the following error:

libmikmod.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory

** Warning **: alsa_get_mixer(): Attaching to mixer hw:1 failed: No such
device

I've even removed XMMS with apt and re-installed it but I still get the
error and I'm at a loss on what my next step would be. XMMS used to
work fine before the new kernel was installed.

I googled for the error as listed but was not very informative or for
that matter not a lot of returns for this error. If anyone can give me
some ideas or a fix that would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

2004-03-07 Thread Antonio Rodriguez
First, thanks to all that helpd. Next, a small howto for references:

For background, and to know what you are going to do, read
/usr/share/doc/libsane/Readme.debian.gz and other Readmes in same
directory. In the example that follows /dev/usb/scanner0 is used. You
may need scanner1, or 2, ...

1. su (become root)
2. sane-find-scanner
3. Change line in /etc/hotplug/usb/libsane.usermap to reflect findings
   from step 2.
4. It is recommended to add your scanner to /etc/hotplug/blacklist to
avoid having it recognized by the kernel. I didn have any blacklist,
so next time I boot I may need to do that, lets see.
5. chown root:scanner /dev/usb/scanner0
6. adjust permissions if needed, the user needs to be able to read and
write; for example, after adding the username to the scanner group,
   mine shows up as
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l /dev/usb/scanner0
crw-rw-rw-1 root scanner 180, 48 2002-03-14 16:54 /dev/usb/scanner0
It is said to do chmod 0660 /dev/usb/scanner0 in
   /usr/share/doc/libsane/README.Debian.gz
7. adduser username scanner (add the user to the scanner group)
8. logout from X, get back (to make sure that the new group membership
is recorded) and try it. should work now.

Not 100% sure here since my mouse works fine :-) but:

1) You seem to have two mice in your ServerLayout; try getting rid of
one of them - I suggest you start by commenting out "Configured Mouse".

2) Is it really a scroll mouse? If not, change "ImPS/2" to "PS/2".

There are some more instructions in
/usr/share/doc/libsane/README.Debian.gz to have the device get the
right permissions when connected.

If I remember correctly: I added scanner to /etc/hotplug/blacklist
(When I first configure it the scanner module was still there and I had
compiled it with my kernel, it should not be necessary to add it now).
Then in /etc/hotplug/usb/libsane.usermap I added a line for my scanner
like the sample entry provided and replaced and by the values
for my Epson 1240U.
Lastly, I commented out the 'usb /dev/usb/scanner0' line I had added to
the /etc/sane.d/epson.conf file and added a new line with simply 'usb'
on it.

YMMV HTH,
Philippe

That's further than I get with the Epson perfection 1660 photo:

sane-find-scanner with no arguments doesn't find anything

sane-find-scanner -f /proc/bus/usb/001/003 reports:
found USB scanner (UNKNOWN vendor and product) at device
/proc/bus/usb/001/003
  # Your USB scanner was detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
  # `UNKNOWN vendor and product' means that there seems to be a scanner at
this
  # device file but the vendor and product ids couldn't be identified.
  # Currently identification only works with Linux versions >= 2.4.8. You
may
  # need to configure your backend manually, see the backend's manpage.

The relevant bit of /proc/bus/usb/devices has:
T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=05 Cnt=01 Dev#= 2 Spd=480 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=04b8 ProdID=011e Rev= 1.00
S: Manufacturer=EPSON

E: Ad=81(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 512 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=02(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 512 Ivl=0ms

the versions of sane and libusb are:
ii sane-utils 1.0.13-3 API library for scanners --
utilities
ii libusb-0.1-4 0.1.8-4Userspace USB programming
library

The kernel is 2.6.3 for AMD k7 (Debian Sid stock kernel).

(I'm not totally convinced I understand the controllers on this machine as
the scanner shows up on Bus 001 (the USB2 bus) whichever socket I plug it
into, while the printer (also supposedly a USB2 device) never does).

I am having a bad time making this work. I have tried a
bunch of different options, including one found on the net about
making some changes in fstab:

none/proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults,devmode=0666 0 0

Here is another output:

  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by

Made the change in /etc/sane.d/hp.conf
# HP ScanJet 5200C
#usb 0x03f0 0x0401
usb libusb:003:002

and also tried without libusb as indicated by one of you:
# HP ScanJet 5200C
#usb 0x03f0 0x0401
usb

Nothing works. Any ideas?

Hi. Thanks for reply.
I have already tried to do that. No sucess. I have had alsa for a numer

the naming changed. It seems like that since i get:

Therefore i think it is related to some configuration in debian rather

means that I cant unload alsa and go for oss if I want. It wil probably
be ok in later versions of 2.6.
Thanks for tip.

kernel 2.6.3

2004-03-04 Thread la2
Hello debian-user,

I compiled subject. Now i cannot install and compile NVIDIA
drivers 1.5336, it says: "I cannot find nvidia.ko". Also I
cannot compile alsa-drivers for my AC'97 codec (I always use
Intel810): at first I configure them, the write make install
and the compiler prints that there is a great number of error
 during compiling process.

Let me add another etail: I just started wmaker, and it there is sound
there. I am playing alsaplayer there right now. So it is some issue

kernel 2.6.3, emu10k1, no sound

2004-03-03 Thread Antonio Rodriguez
Can anyone shed some light here? I compiled alsa in the kernel (y, not
as m), with emu10k1 (I have a sound blaster). Now I get the following:

Couldn't open mixer device /dev/sound/mixer
(from the gnome applett)
and from the volume control:
Unable to open audio device '/dev/mixer'.
Please check that you have permissions to open '/dev/mixer'
and that you have sound support in your kernel.
 However:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l /dev/dsp
lrwxrwxrwx1 root audio   9 2003-10-08 15:58 /dev/dsp -> /dev/dsp0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l /dev/mixer
lrwxrwxrwx1 root audio  11 2003-10-08 15:58 /dev/mixer -> /dev/mixer0

Any ideas would be welcome.

I would add to Andreas's list: libsysfs and sysfsutils. These were
mentioned in a thread Google found for me on lkml, along with procps,
as being update candidates for getting rid of the error message
"Unknown HZ value! (xx) Assuming 100."
I have seen this messages appearing, too. See my other message for a
conclusion. Thanks for your answer!

my apology. I thought it would be the best to keep the topics together,
but I have already read why it's better to do it the other way.
* Is the updating of the above packages really necessary?

From /usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.3/Documentation/changes:
o Gnu C 2.95.3
o Gnu make 3.78
o binutils 2.12
o util-linux 2.10o
The above packages in Woody are recent enough. util-linux in Woody
however can't handle the new cryptoloop/cryptoapi, so if you want to
use encrypted loopback devices with the drivers included in 2.6,
upgrade util-linux.
Ok, that makes one package more.

o module-init-tools 0.9.10
o e2fsprogs 1.29
module-init-tools is not included in Woody, you need it to load modules
for 2.6.
Yes, that's why I had added the backports.org source in the first
place.
The e2fsprogs version in Woody is too old (may keep working
with existing file systems, but maybe you could get problems with new
ext2/ext3 file systems).
Looks like it keeps working with existing ones. I found no problems, but
didn't create new ones either. It's better to upgrade, I'd say.
o jfsutils 1.1.3
o reiserfsprogs 3.6.3
o xfsprogs 2.6.0
o pcmcia-cs 3.1.21
o quota-tools3.09
I didn't check the above package, I don't use them.
Same with me.

o PPP2.4.0

This one is okay.
Thanks.

o isdn4k-utils 3.1pre1
o nfs-utils 1.0.5
Didn't check.
Don't need them, but I will keep that in mind.

o procps 3.1.13

Needs to be upgraded.
Yes, I have read about that.

o oprofile 0.5.3

Don't know.
Ok.

* Is it sufficient, or did I miss something?
If I compare the lists, you should also upgrade e2fsprogs.
So the complete list would be in my case:

hdparm
e2fsprogs
libsysfs
module-init-tools
net-tools
procps
sysfsutils
util-linux
libsysfs and sysfsutils were mentioned by Pigeon. That is too much for a
productive environment, since I don't know nothing about possible side
effects. I'll stick with 2.4.25, but many thanks for your answer anyway.

You using Debian? Here.
Ok. My name's not Wes, but I've got some questions anyway. :)

Debian stable, using this source:

# Kernel 2.6
deb http://www.backports.org/debian stable kernel-2.6
A system upgrade updated the following packages then:

hdparm
module-init-tools
net-tools
procps
Vanilla Kernel 2.6.3 from kernel.org compiles and runs just fine, as
far as I can see. No sound yet (Audigy I), but that's no primary goal
anyway. NVidia driver V5336 loads as a module, everything else is
compiled in statically. Got a turbo-mouse now. So far, so good...
My questions are:

* Is the updating of the above packages really necessary?

* Is it sufficient, or did I miss something?

* ITABWTDI (is there a better way to do it)?

* Any patches recommended?

* Aside from the NVidia driver, would anybody recommend using 2.6.3
Kernels on a Debian stable in a productive environment right now?
Background is, I have such a system which experiences heavy load.
Anything yielding greater performance is greatly appreciated. But
as usual, time is not really on my side.
Hints to existing docs are absolutely sufficient.
