[Bug 138102] Re: [Gutsy] Closing Lid causes All Screens to Blank
xorg.conf is not relevant here, this is a gnome-power-manager bug, not an X bug. This bug is completely reproducible on Ubuntu 8.04, so I'm reopening this report and marking it confirmed. I'll try to explain in my own terms what I'm seeing, which I recognize as reflected in TJ's description so I'm sure it's the same issue. I have gnome-power-manager configured to blank the screen when the laptop lid is closed on AC power; I furthermore have gnome-screensaver set up to require a password to unlock the screen. When I'm using my laptop on its own and I close the lid, the screensaver correctly activates and the screen is locked, so that when I open the lid I have to enter a password to get access. This is good. I recently purchased an LCD which I've started using via my laptop's VGA output. My chipset is fully supported by xrandr, and the display is automatically detected by xrandr --auto, the desktop is automatically resized to use the larger resolution of the LCD, and the same windows are shown on both displays via clone mode. This is also good. Because of the current disposition of my desk (i.e. - cluttered), I then proceed to close up my laptop, using only the external monitor, and external keyboard/mouse. The screensaver then engages, because I've closed the lid. While superficially correct, this is no longer good, because it means I have to unlock my screen immediately afterwards to continue using my laptop. I believe the correct behavior here would be for gnome-power-manager to detect that an additional screen is present, and to *not* trigger the screensaver on lid close events when this is the case. Enabling the screensaver if the external display is subsequently disconnected (which I think should be detectable in the xrandr case, possibly not in the nvidia case since nvidia doesn't use xrandr) would be ok, but logically, the reason I want the screen to lock when I close my lid is that I've put the machine into a state that I'm definitively not using it - I can't reach the keyboard and I can't see the screen. When an external monitor is attached, this is no longer the case, and gnome-power-manager should be made clever enough to account for this. ** Changed in: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => Confirmed -- [Gutsy] Closing Lid causes All Screens to Blank https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138102 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

As much as I tried, I have not found a way to reproduce this bug. It just happens once in a while. I have now tried with Hardy server and clients and Feisty server. Tried with and without guest access. Please also post your smb.conf as well as /var/log/samba/log.smbd and /var/log/samba/log., making sure that /etc/samba/smb.conf has 'loglevel = 9' on the server. -- Playing from Samba SMB shared folder now is not possible (it could be done until last upgrade). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/241448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 191889] Re: [MASTER] "Offline Mode" feature fails to detect proper online state for networks that are managed outside of network manager.
Thanks Simone but just before I read your fix I managed to get my system working, after and lot of googling and fiddling. It was dead simple once I found out what to do (but aren't most things, once figured out?) I tinkered with /etc/network/interfaces my original was like this auto lo iface lo inet loopback address 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 and now it is like this auto lo iface lo inet loopback address 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 iface ppp0 inet ppp provider tiscali iface eth0 inet dhcp iface eth1 inet dhcp I can select tiscali from the network manager right-click dialup connections and hang up later instead of pon tiscali / poff I can see and connect to wireless when a signal is around and I guess I will be able to plug a cat5 cable and get a network if one was to hand. FF3 now knows it is on line and starts accordingly. Kmail sends and receives mail fine. skype and kopete work fine (always did but nice to know I've not messed them up). -- [MASTER] "Offline Mode" feature fails to detect proper online state for networks that are managed outside of network manager. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/191889 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
