[Bug 232340] Re: CaCert Certificates not installed

2013-11-06 Thread David Ayers
I can confirm that this issue still exists in Evolution 3.2.3 provided
by 12.04 LTS

But I don't want to reopen this issue /in Evolution/ ... at least not
quite yet, as I'm not sure it belongs here (or not just here).

I believe the correct approach would be to have an application like
seahorse manage the CA's that a user trusts and then have other
applications like Evolution, Thunderbird, Firefox, Epiphany, ... defer
to gnome-keyring to verify the key's and CA's that a user trusts.

I'm uncertain whether gnome-key or seahorse have any support for CA's
and I fear that most CA handling is within each application as is the
case for Evolution. But then the handling of CA files must become much
simpler that what is currently offered.

[Bug 232340] Re: CaCert Certificates not installed

2013-11-06 Thread David Ayers
The important issue is not who Mozilla trusts, but who the user trusts.
The issue also doesn't solely apply to the class 1 root certificate but also to
the class 3 server certificate used by mail servers.

There are a substantial set of users who use (often their own) mail
servers that use certificates signed by CAcert class 3 certificate.

Any application should have easy was to add a CA which the user trusts,
totally independent of the situation wrt CAcert, which is also a reason
why I do not believe that reopening this particular bug is the right
thing to do.

The correct thing would be to request an easy way for a user to manage
her CA's for her applications.

[Bug 482597] Re: Empathy dialpad tones don't work

2012-09-24 Thread David Ayers
Hello Dawid,

I do not here the DTMF dial tone from empathy while it sends them... but
if I call my mailbox to leave a message and then I type numbers on the
dial pad and later I listen to the mailbox, then I do hear the DTMF dial
tones on the recording. The quality isn't great, but the dial tones are
audible.

Cheers,
David

PS: I'm still on 12.04 btw...

[Bug 482597] Re: Empathy dialpad tones don't work

2012-05-06 Thread David Ayers
Hello Dawid,

I just tried the number you posted on 12.04 and it indeed accepted the
DTMF dial tone and I heard the message to activate some card in English.
But I also called my own mailbox to press a few numbers and listen to it
later. The quality was not overwhelming and I could imagine that some
systems could have issues. But I'm not sure whether that has to do with
the connection between the SIP provider and me or between the SIP
provider and the long distance call to Europe.

How is your speech quality in general? Could you call a mailbox to test
whether you hear any DTMF tones?

[Bug 512761] Re: “Subscription request” dialog is confusing

I'm not sure... it is a subscription request from the other user to
subscribe to your online status.

I have no issue with adding a more descriptive/informational message,
but it should be clear that the other user can now monitor your status
(I would suppose that is exactly what the term Subscription Request is
meant to imply).

[Bug 886600] Re: Maximized evolution window is not maximized

2011-11-13 Thread David Ayers
Indeed... if I set the video device in virt-manager from cirrus to vmvga
I am able to select higher screen resolutions within the vm. When the
vm has a higher screen resolution, evolution maximizes as expected. So
this is actually interaction issue between unity and evolution for
expecting too much screen real estate.

So I would say that this is indeed related to Bug #23810 but not
necessarily a duplicate of it. I think unity should be able to deal
with applications that expect higher resolutions even if evolution is
not one that shouldn't be expecting it... so maybe this should be
reassigned to unity?

[Bug 886600] Re: Maximized evolution window is not maximized

2011-11-09 Thread David Ayers
I'm testing this in VM with a maximum resolution is 1024x768 yet it
seems Evolutions main Window cannot be sized narrow enough to fit into
the screen. I thought this could be relevant.

The effect of maximizing is that the Window decorations are removed
(i.e. the menu is placed into the global menu together with the
close/minimize/maximize button but the rest of the content remains where
it was before pressing the maximize button. This does not happen on
higher resolutions on a USB installation of Oneiric that I have. But
reducing the screen size here to 1024x768 doesn't have the same affect.

I'll report back if I find a something else that may be causing this
issue.

[Bug 503786] Re: HTML formatted GPG encrypted email not properly handled

2011-11-07 Thread David Ayers
I'd like to report that this issue seems to be fixed in Oneiric but still
exists in Lucid and Maverick (and probably Natty).
Note that I only had the issue if I did not have the public key of the sender
imported to GnuPG. Once the (current) public key was available, evolution was
able to decipher the block in the older versions as well.

[Bug 886891] [NEW] Evolution integration with unity app-icon not working

2011-11-06 Thread David Ayers
Public bug reported:

I'm testing evolution on oneiric to see if I can upgrade from maverick.
After the installation I unistalled thunderbird and installed Evolution.
Yet now the mail icon in Unity menu bar merely contains the status
entries, chat, microblogging, Ubuntu One and a reset entry. I believe
when I tested Natty evolution did actually show up. I installed
Evolution from the Software Center, and found no other addon for untiy
integration, so I suppose it should be there by default or is something
missing in the Software-Center configuration?

[Bug 232340] Re: CaCert Certificates not installed

2011-09-01 Thread David Ayers
Even if cacert.org cannot be installed by default, there should by an
end user application to manage the certificates so that they can easily
be made available all applications (or specific applications for bonus
points).

Currently one needs to import the certificate via Firefox, export them
to files and import them info evolution. That's not feasible for the
average user. What's even worse is that FF does not add the file
extensions that evolution expects.

[Bug 229187] Re: Evolution mailing list does not render accents correctly

2011-07-03 Thread David Ayers
Hello Martin,

I can confirm that this fixes the main issue! Thanks!

Yet it is possibly incomplete:
If you add the list containing escaped characters to a recipient field and the
expand it explicitly, it is still expanded to the escaped name.

I can't seem to identify the upstream fix but it should be in
libedataserverui/e-name-selector-entry.c popup_activate_inline_expand in
evolution data server.

Cheers,
David

[Bug 754553] Re: Evolution re-send old mails sometimes when sending new mails.

2011-04-16 Thread David Ayers
I'm not sure I'm experiencing the exact same issue but it seems similar.

I also have not found a way to reproduce this and it only happens once
or twice a week of daily usage.

I send mail. Sometimes Evolution asks me to restore the an old mail as
if it had been closed or it crashed while composing a mail. Yet I had
not neither closed evolution nor did I notice some crash.

I can restore the mail, yet I find it in my sent folder also. Of
course now I'm unsure whether it was successfully sent, but most of the
times I asked it was indeed sent the first time.

I'm not marking this bug as confirmed though, as the symptoms seem a bit
different so this may be a different bug. I'd be glad to open a new
report if the fix to this report does not fix my issue.

[Bug 554280] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_str_hash()

2011-04-06 Thread David Ayers
Hello Ingo,

I think the issue is that this particular bug is about theming:

StacktraceTop:
 g_str_hash () from /lib/libglib-2.0.so.0
 g_hash_table_lookup () from /lib/libglib-2.0.so.0
 theme_dir_get_icon_suffix (
 choose_icon (icon_theme=value optimized out,
 ensure_pixbuf_for_gicon (image=0xe0f8b0)

but our bug about Ubuntuone... it's just that apport is not smart enough
to tell the difference. Please have a look at bug #744383 which has the
trace that I have:

StacktraceTop:
 g_str_hash (v=0x0) at /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.26.1/glib/gstring.c:134
 g_hash_table_lookup (hash_table=0x95a44c0, key=0x0)
 quota_exceeded_callback (daemon=0x95bb7b0,
 g_cclosure_marshal_VOID__POINTER (closure=0x967beb8,
 g_closure_invoke (closure=0x967beb8, return_value=0x0,

And that bug indeed has a high priority and is actively being worked on.

So think we were just lead to the wrong old report that has similar
symptoms.

2011-04-05 Thread David Ayers
I have extended my Ubuntuone subscription by 20 GB but the crash still
happens. So this seems unrelated to tripping the quota.

theme will be restored for most applications (notable exception is
Nautilus). ... at least until the next ubuntuone sync that trips your

Thanks Sebastien... I'm completely confused. I still remember parts of

[Bug 554280] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_str_hash()

2011-03-31 Thread David Ayers
Thanks for the pointers. Yet I can confirm that installing:
sudo aptitude install libappindicator1/maverick-proposed
python-appindicator/maverick-proposed
(and rebooting)
does /not/ solve the issue:
ayers@schiefer:~$ apt-cache policy libappindicator1
libappindicator1:
  Installiert: 0.2.9-0ubuntu1.1
  Kandidat:0.2.9-0ubuntu1.1
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 0.2.9-0ubuntu1.1 0

Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 0.2.9-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main amd64 Packages

and since bug #708188 also point to libappindicator and this is actually
associated with gnome-session-daemon, I hope you don't mind me changing
the status to confirmed.

I'd rather not give feedback to the libappinidicator reports since those
are not the crashes I'm seeing. My crash is 100% reproducible and
always effects gnome-settings-daemon.

Of course I'd be happy to test other packages if there is reason to
believe that are related.

2011-03-31 Thread David Ayers
Hello Sebastien, I was subscribed to this bug after ubuntu-bug (or apport?)
pointed me to this issue due to my crash report in:
/var/crash/_usr_lib_gnome-settings-daemon_gnome-settings-daemon.1000.crash

Yes, I'm using 10.10 (maverick) and I'm using default GNOME with the
default Ambient them yet smaller fonts than the default. Note that the
original report was for 10.4 LTS (lucid), so a fix in natty probably
won't help most affected people.

Please let me know if I should open new report.

Yes, this happens on every login.

OK, I have opened bug #746566 (I haven't set it to public yet since I'm
not sure what all I should delete before doing so). Also if you have

[Bug 742374] [NEW] segfault error 4 in libglib-2.0.so.0.2600.1

2011-03-25 Thread David Ayers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I had seen similar symptoms in Natty testing and some other vm's but now
this affecting my production system. gnome-settings-daemon crashes and
the desktop appearance falls back to a mixture of default gnome and a
few ambiance elements.

The only logging I notices is in /var/log/messages (and kern.log).

If I log out and log back in, the the daemon is restarted and the
appearance is as expected. But only few moments of using Evolution
provokes the next crash. Also a reboot did not alleviate the issue.

Hello Amr,

How is the patch coming along? Have you cleaned it up and posted it
upstream? Is there a corresponding upstream bug report other than the
Device-Power? ... which seems to be inactive currently. I'd be great to
get a definitive fix upstream so that the released packages can start
being patched.

Thanks for your work!

[Bug 702148] [NEW] Please suggest adding sender's email to mails only containing BCC recipients

2011-01-12 Thread David Ayers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

This is a feature request.
Some versions of Outlook misinterpret mails with only BCC recipients.

Mails sent which merely contain BCC entries can be parsed by:
Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3664
but not for example Outlook version:
Microsoft Office Outlook, Build 11.0.5510
which does not decode these mails correctly.

The the raw MIME format including all the headers are presented.
I'm not sure whether the To header must contain a valid address,

Evolution warns about an empty To: header invoking an Apparently-To:
header on some systems revealing the BCC recipients. Maybe a suggestion
and easy one-click option to add the sender as the To: recipient would
be a nice feature.

Even though the this might be a bug in Outlook, to users it seems like
an issue in our Free Software implementations.

Interesting.. I suppose you are connecting from a Maverick client? Which client

If I try the same Xephyr command from a Maverick VM to the Lucie VM I
get a segfault.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-12-12 Thread David Ayers
Thanks a lot Tim... It seems that for my use case using X directly would
actually also be more appropriate anyway.

I have my desktop session running, switch to terminal 1 via ctrl-alt-F1, login
then run:
sudo X :2 -query ip
my screen goes blank but no greeter is displayed. I've attached the custom.conf
from the server, but I don't find anything unusual.

I suppose that the main difference between our setup is that you are
using two 64-bit systems while mine are i686, is that correct? These
are both Dell pre-installed systems that have been upgraded to Lucid
with many manual configurations and a few proprietary drivers for
misguided hardware purchases :-/ oh well...

I'd install 64-bit Lucid on both via external USB drives but due to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/45989
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/46520
that's a bit tedious for my production systems... but I hope I'll get around to
it coming week.

Again, thanks a lot for providing the PPA's for lucid and spending the
time to knock this out.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-12-09 Thread David Ayers
I was hoping this could be resolved by a backport of the fix in
2.30.4-0ubuntu1 for bug #393835 but I cannot connect to a maverick
server with the even newer 2.30.5-0ubuntu4 with Xephir. Yet I still can
connect to a Fedora with gdm 2.30.2 1.fc3.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-11-08 Thread David Ayers
I'd like to iterate that I confirmed in comment 64 that Fedora 13 didn't
have the issue either. If it helps I can also check with Fedora 14.
The inability to use gdm as an XDMCP server seems Ubuntu specific to me.

2010-11-08 Thread David Ayers
From comment #64: Connecting to a Goddard gdm 2.30.2 allows multiple
successive logins.

Now netstat reports that Lucid is listening on port 177 only under IPv6 and
Goddard only on IPv4.
How would I get Lucid to listing on IPv4?

[Bug 229187] Re: Evolution mailing list does not render accents correctly

2010-11-07 Thread David Ayers
I now have the following versions installed:
evolution:
  Installed: 2.28.3-0ubuntu10.1
  Candidate: 2.28.3-0ubuntu10.1
  Version table:
 *** 2.28.3-0ubuntu10.1 0
500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-proposed/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.28.3-0ubuntu10 0
500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates/main Packages
 2.28.3-0ubuntu9 0
500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

ay...@vmlucid:~$ LANG=C apt-cache policy evolution-data-server
evolution-data-server:
  Installed: 2.28.3.1-0ubuntu5
  Candidate: 2.28.3.1-0ubuntu5
  Version table:
 *** 2.28.3.1-0ubuntu5 0
500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.28.3.1-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

When I first associate a contact with accents with a mailing list, the
contact is rendered correctly. (This is different than the evolution
version from lucid-updates (2.28.3-0ubuntu10)) But if I close the list
and open the Contact List / Members View again, the contact is again
rendered as quoted-printables.

Expanding the contact list in an e-mail header will also expand the name
as quoted-printables.

[Bug 229187] Re: Evolution mailing list does not render accents correctly

2010-11-04 Thread David Ayers
I'd love to validate this for 2.28.3-0ubuntu10.1 supposedly on lucid-
proposed but I believe the was some issue with the upload or it hasn't
propagated yet. I've activated proposed in the software sources (and
ran aptitude update) and also attempted to install via aptitude install
evolution/lucid-proposed.

ay...@vmlucid:~$ LANG=C apt-cache policy evolution

 2.28.3-0ubuntu9 0

I'll keep checking...

[Bug 572176] Re: sound not working on virtual machine

2010-09-11 Thread David Ayers
I'm not sure that this bug is correctly associated with gst0.10-python.

I've got a Lucid i386 Host (this system came pre-installed with Feisty I
believe and still has some apps / configurations that I can't easily
reinstall under x64, so I've been upgrading since.)

I've got libvirt/virt-manager installed. As guests have a variety of
systems available but I suppose the easiest to deal with is another
Lucid i386 installation, (this one fresh from a release image and
updated to current packages).

Sound is working fine on the host. I've configured an ac97 sound card
(but also tested es1370) in the VM. The volume control in the VM seems
to indicate that that it recognizes the virtual card. But sound is not
being passed through.

I will run the apport-collect -p alsa-base 572176 for the VM, but I
assume that this may be a KVM/libvirt issue more that an gstreamer
issue.

[Bug 617717] [NEW] only mails of evolution backup (from previous version) restored

2010-08-14 Thread David Ayers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I'm not entirely certain this is a valid bug report or a feature
request.

I'm trying to replicate issues I find in Lucid in Maverick. To that
end, I attempted to restore an evolution backup file created in Lucid on
a Maverick installation. The restoration completed and mails seem to
be fully restored, yet the contacts, calendar entries, tasks and memos
are not restored. Well, the files are unpacked and exist, but it seems
the new version of evolution does not expect them there.

Is this expected behavior? Must I restore to the same version and then
upgrade the entire distribution to migrate my evolution data? I'd find
that extremely inconvenient. But maybe I'm missing something else.

Thanks.

My tests are currently blocked by issue / Bug #617717 and I'm not sure
if I really have to go through a Lucid-Maverick upgrade in a VM. If
that's the case then I won't be able to give reliable feedback until
start of September due to connectivity issues.

[Bug 617304] [NEW] Contacts: duplicate entry warning: custom widget creation failed

2010-08-13 Thread David Ayers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When correcting the name of a contact (exchanging first and last name)
evolution detected a preexisting contact matching the changed entry and
correctly informs me of the conflict. Yet in the left part of the
dialog contains a placeholder stating [custom widget creation failed]
instead of whatever should be shown there. (this is a DE_AT.utf8 locale
in case that makes a difference).

I'll try to verify this issue in Maverick later.
