[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-22 Thread Greg Merchan
I've made comments on blogs about this and I hope it will be helpful to
add them here.

The layout I've seen in screenshots has already shown flaws, because
whatever draws the window frames hasn't been made to adjust rounded
outlines when buttons are missing. That's an easy fix, barely worth
noting. Same goes for other complaints about broken themes.

But also apparent in those screen shots is that with the new button
arrangement the buttons will either be in different places on different
windows, or there will be gaps, or we will need frame controls that for
some windows are always disabled. This was already a problem because of
the order of Minimize and Maximize; no maximizable window is not
minimizable, but some minimizable windows are not maximizable.

It was always advisable to put Close in the top-right corner because we
have left-aligned menu bars in the windows. In fact, in the early days
of GNOME it was decided that the Help menu item must not be right-
aligned because that would place it too close to the Close button (among
other reasons).

There has always been a good reason to keep Close away from Minimize and
Maximize - it's too easy to miss your intended target.

Put these together and an order like Min-MaxTitleClose seems
best.

But the danger of accidentally clicking Close can be mitigated by other
changes. The Close button can be disabled when there are unsaved changes
in a document. You still have to reopen your document, but at least
nothing should be lost. In lieu of that, the application can prompt the
user to save changes. Annoying, but alas.

If these things are done, then Close can be safely put next to Minimize
and Maximize and it can be put on either side.

If missing-button gaps are to be avoided, disabled window frame controls
will not be used, and the buttons will be grouped together, then there
is one button order which is suitable for the frames; from outside to
inside that is: Close, Minimize, Maximize. Change those conditions, and
anything goes. (Well, almost.)

I favor getting rid of all three buttons and replacing them with . . .
well, that another topic, eh?

Try a fresh installation of 10.04 beta, instead of an upgrade. As Pedro
pointed out, a faulty installation was the cause, not a bug in the
software.

2010-03-02 Thread Greg Merchan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 294182 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/294182

I think this bug should be reopened and reassigned, perhaps to the
package responsible for the System menu.

The problem initially reported is not that Yelp is slow, but that the
About Ubuntu action is slow. It would be much faster if it loaded an
About window like About GNOME does. That window could have a link to
further documentation.

I'd wager that most of the time people use About menu items, they are
looking for version numbers. That's what I was doing a moment ago when I
encountered this problem.

[Bug 524984] Re: recent upgrade loses accounts and can't re-add them

2010-02-23 Thread Greg Grossmeier
I think this might have been actually caused by problems with my intel
drivers causing me to boot up via Recovery Mode and doing a startx. I
don't think all of the keyring stuff was started correctly.

Either way, this issue has resolved itself via upgrades.

Thanks, seb.

[Bug 241206] Re: On Hardy screen saver never displays

Now also see the same in Ubuntu 9.10 karmic. It just seems to have started in

or updates associated with the time the kernel was updated.
I have automatic update notification on, so it would have been since these
became available in the repositories. I was hoping it would stay permanently
fixed in karmic.

[Bug 319946] Re: sound recorder plug-ins

2010-01-16 Thread Greg
The same bug has returned again for me. All I have done is reboot into an older
kernel: 2.6.31-16-generic. I was trying to see if the microphone and sound
recorder worked in that but got the message: Could not capture using the
'Voice, Lossless' wav profile. Please
verify its settings. You may be missing the plug-ins.
That happened as-well immediately after the rebooting back into
2.6.31-17-generict but now again when I try it, just a few minutes later, I
don't get the message. Of course the microphone still doesn't work.
So this seems a non repeatable bug with me.

[Bug 319946] Re: sound recorder plug-ins

2010-01-16 Thread Greg
I switched user to my other login. Opened System, Preferences, Multimedia
systems selector, selected: OSS-Open sound system for the input and saw that it
wasn't supported by a driver for input device, so went back to alsa microphone
input for device. I then tried sound recorder but the error message returned:
Could not capture using the 'Voice, Lossless' audio profile. Please verify its
settings.
You may be missing the necessary plug-ins.
I then logged out of the user account back into my main user account and the
message has returned again in that account. Probably if I wait a few minutes
and try sound recorder again the message will not appear.

[Bug 319946] Re: sound recorder plug-ins

2010-01-16 Thread Greg
I think I have found exactly how to repeat the bug.
Since I have removed pulse audio and installed gstreamer0.10-alsa
1. System, Preferences. Multimedia Systems Selector
2. Default input plugin, alsa
3. Device, Nvidia CK804 (for my hardware) -MIC ADC
4. Open Applications, Sound Video, Sound Recorder
5. Record from input, Microphone
6. Record as, Voice, Lossless (.wav type) or any that suits.
7. Click the red record button
Result: Could not capture using the 'Voice, Lossless' audio profile. Please
verify its settings.
You may be missing the necessary plug-ins, message
Expected was no message but the time of recording showing until I clicked stop.
To not have the message appear:.
1. Close Sound Recorder
2. In Multimedia Systems Selector
3. Default input, Device, Default
4. Close Multimedia Systems Selector
5. Open Sound Recorder.
6. Record from Input microphone
7, Record as, Voice, lossless (.wav type) or any that suits.
8. Click the record button
Result: the error message does not appear and the time of recording advances
until you click on stop.
Since I found how to exactly make this repeatable can I reopen this bug. or if
I have not got the permissions could someone please open it.

[Bug 319946] Re: sound recorder plug-ins

2010-01-15 Thread Greg
I also have this problem in ubuntu 9.10 karmic
uname -r
2.6.31-17-generic
The steps that caused the problem for me was:
1. Uninstall pulse audio; sudo apt-get remove gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio
vlc-plugin-pulse pulseaudio
2. apt-get advised to autoremove other packages that were no longer needed from
dependencies in step 1. I did this
3. sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-alsa gnome-alsamixer
4. I restarted after this and logged in again
5 I noticed the sound preferences did not work anymore. (expected) so
completely removed gnome-media in synaptic
6. I then realized gnome-media contained the gnome-sound-recorder, so
reinstalled gnome-media
7. I think I logged out and back in
8. Opened sound recorder from Applications, Sound Video, Sound Recorder
9 Selected record, lossless wave type
10. Clicked record button
Got the message Could not capture using the 'Voice, Lossless' wav profile.
Please
verify its settings. You may be missing the plug-ins.
The idea in removing pulse audio is related to Bug #405945
It seemed to at least partially solve the problem for that bug.
I have just reinstalled pulee audio with the command:
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop and sound recorder does not give any error
message now but still wont record anything (related to Bug #405945)
So with me the bug seems to be caused by uninstalling pulse audio, installing
gstreamer0.10-alsa and gnome-alsamixer.

[Bug 319946] Re: sound recorder plug-ins

2010-01-15 Thread Greg
I removed pulse audio again with command:
sudo apt-get purge gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio vlc-plugin-pulse pulseaudio
After this and a reboot sound recorder still not givng an error message like
before: Could not capture using the 'Voice, Lossless' wav profile. Please
verify its settings. You may be missing the plug-ins.
but the microphone is not working as in Bug #405945.
It is probably not relevant what I reported here then. It must of been caused
by removing to much previously when I removed pulse or when I removed
gnome-media. Before when I reinstalled gnome-media the error still appeared
though, but disappeared when I reinstalled pulse.

[Bug 489973] Re: Nautilus cannot download OpenOffice files on a Secure WebDAV, but can transfer other files (PDF, DOC).

2009-12-02 Thread Greg Brown
New information: changing the file extension allows the file to be
downloaded.

Change an ODT file's extension to any extension that works, and the file
may be downloaded successfully. It does not matter what the extension
is, as long as it belongs to a file type that successfully transfers.
Once the ODT file is downloaded, the extension may be changed once again
to ODT and the file opened without problem. Of course this workaround
is not practical, but it does add a clue.

These extensions work: DOC, PDF, HTML, JPG
So far, these extensions do not work: ODT, WPD.

The problem appears to be essentially with the extension rather than the
actual file's content.

[Bug 451350] Re: karmic: brasero error on burning iso images

2009-11-14 Thread Greg Whiteley
I get the same symptom and fiddling around with cdrecord I find that the
options used for the burn are not compatible with the supported modes of
the drive. The same error is reported in his attached brasero-
session.log

 Excerpt from mine:
Supported modes: TAO PACKET SAO SAO/R96P SAO/R96R
 Excerpt from attached brasero-session.log
 Supported modes: TAO PACKET SAO

Taking the command reported in the attached brasero-session.log
$ wodim -v dev=/dev/sr0 speed=24 driveropts=burnfree -raw96r fs=16m -clone
/home/user/brasero
...
Supported modes: TAO PACKET SAO SAO/R96P SAO/R96R
...
wodim: Drive does not support RAW recording.
wodim: Illegal write mode for this drive.

Removing -clone and -raw96r successfully writes _something_ to the disk,
but its not a valid disk once its done. The -clone mode used on read
requires -raw96r on write and its unsupported by these drives.

Adding in -sao (as suggested by my drives capabilities: SAO/R96R) returns:
wodim: SAO RAW writing not yet implemented.

So possibilities occur (to unknowledgeable me):
1. wodim doesn't recognise that the drives support RAW any more (and did in
Jaunty)
2. brasero has changed the way it reads and writes whole disks and this mode
(-clone) isn't compatible with drives that don't support RAW (and the old way
was)

I'll try to boot up in jaunty and see if wodim reports the same sets of
supported modes

Yes. Seems to happen with most m3u playlists that have mp3 files in the
playlist. Just hit next to advance to the next song while the current is
playing. It may not happen on every song, but on a playlist of ~10 files
it should happen at least once if not much more.

[Bug 416241] Re: gnome-system-monitor uses 100% of a core, unable to close

2009-08-30 Thread Greg Grossmeier
This is very weird indeed as I can no longer reproduce the issue (it was
simply opening System Monitor and it wouldn't close when clicking on the
X). I bet there have been some upgrades to some of the dependent
packages, which is my only explanation for it working now.

Closing this bug for now, and will re-open if the issue re-appears.

Thanks for the debugging help, Pedro.

[Bug 398669] [NEW] gnome-keyring-daemon crashes with Error reading response length from authentication socket.

2009-07-13 Thread Greg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

gnome-keyring-daemon crashes the first time I try to ssh to anywhere.
In the terminal I get Error reading response length from authentication
socket.

What should happen is the box should pop-up to prompt me for the
password to unlock the password protected ssh key.

In auth.log:
Jul 13 15:54:36 bruticus gnome-keyring-daemon[7855]: *** glibc detected ***

Tried the latest git version - could not reproduce problem, although I
had to manually copy the new binary over /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon
from the ubuntu package.

[Bug 210872] Re: Rhythmbox option to disable notification

2009-05-12 Thread Greg Smith
There is a configuration option in a GUI...just not the one you looked
at. This is really a documentation problem. If someone turned the
instructions I'm including here into a FAQ entry or something like that,
I don't think there's any application change needed here. It's just
really not obvious what to do.

The basic fix is to run gconf-editor and navigate to /apps/rhythmbox/ui
where you'll find a checkbox for show_notifications exposed. Toggle
that off and notifications go away.

Unfortunately, gconf-editor isn't available via the default Ubuntu menu
structure either. You can fix that by System/Preferences/Main Menu,
going into the System Tools section, and enabling Configuration
Editor. Now gconf-editor will be available with that name under
Applications/System Tools.

So the all-GUI solution here is to edit the menus, add Configuration
Editor, run Configuration Editor, navigate into the Rhythmbox UI
section, and turn off show_notifications.

Alternately, the quick command-line workaround is to edit
.gconf/apps/rhythmbox/ui/%gconf.xml and edit the line that looks like
this:

entry name=show_notifications mtime=1242152894 type=bool
value=true/

so that the value is false. That seems to work fine, but you don't
have to do that manually and using the official editor tool would
presumably be preferred.

[Bug 365588] Re: Opening dialogs, really slow

2009-04-29 Thread Greg
I'm experiencing similar symptoms, especially over ssh. For example,
clicking on Reply takes about 20-25 seconds for the window to open
over remote X. It's faster locally, but still noticeably slow (around 5
seconds).

[Bug 129396] Re: new windows are put in the background

2009-04-02 Thread Greg K Nicholson
I have the *opposite* problem: new windows appear in front of the active
window.

I can prevent windows gaining *focus*, by changing Compiz's settings,
but I haven't found a way to change where new windows appear in the
stacking order.

I'd like new windows never to appear in front of the active window. The
only time a new window should appear at the front of the stack is when
I've launched it from a panel or a dock, and so the panel or dock is
active and not the frontmost window.

[Bug 163764] Re: I get the error Unhandled MIME type: “text/plain”

2009-03-03 Thread Greg Hutchings
Not necessarily not a bug, just maybe not one for evince, although I'm
not sure why evince is looking in ~/.local/share/mime/mime.cache to read
pdf files...

[Bug 320269] Re: okular crashed with SIGSEGV in Poppler::convertAnnotColor()

2009-01-27 Thread Greg Grossmeier
Lenar,

If you can't reproduce the problem in the Jaunty version that is great!

Marking Fix Released and informing upstream of that the new build fixes
the issue.

[Bug 163764] Re: I get the error Unhandled MIME type: “text/plain”

2009-01-24 Thread Greg Hutchings
I had a similar problem in that nothing would open at all with evince
(always said Unhandled MIME type: application/[insert-MIME-type-
here]). I fixed it by reinstalling the package shared-mime-info. I'm
sure this isn't the best way to fix it and not even a real fix at all,
but anyone happen to know why this worked?
