Title:
  Desktop icons disappearing

Status in gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
This is in Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla.

  The bug:
When connecting to USB tethering and allowing access to the phone's
filesystem, Ubuntu's Desktop icons disappear.

  Steps to reproduce:
Connect a phone to the computer via USB tethering (am a bit uneasy about
mentioning which model phone it is). Switch on USB tethering and then switch
off USB tethering in the phone's Mobile hotspot and tethering options. The
phones screen will popup a dialog box asking "Allow access to phone data?"
(which is a way to give the computer access to the phone's filesystem). You can
click either "Allow" or "Deny". When either "Allow" or "Deny" is selected, the
Desktop icons on Ubuntu disappear. When USB tethering is switched back on, the
Desktop icons reappear.

I've attached a video of the phenomenon. The video starts with USB
tethering being switched on, which is why you can see the desktop
icons. Then when USB tethering is switched off and "Allow" is clicked
on the phone, the icons disappear and then they reappear when USB
  tethering is switched on again.

This bug is probably related to bugs #1928206 and #1928213, which
indicate that there are some inconsistencies with how the Nautilus
Desktop works with respect to a Nautilus window.

disk read speed:
   hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb
  /dev/sdb:
   Timing cached reads: 23962 MB in 2.00 seconds = 11993.56 MB/sec
   Timing buffered disk reads: 456 MB in 3.00 seconds = 151.78 MB/sec
There is no problem with the read speed of the hard disk.
And when I have a lot of data exchange while running a python program, the
speed used to be 3s, but now it suddenly becomes 30-50s.
The above is when my computer is running well.

2021-12-16 Thread weihang shi
Thanks for your reply, my question is currently in nautilus. When I use
SSH to log in to my user, the time to enter ssh is very short, but it is
very slow when reading the user's home directory. So I guess it is
caused by the slow reading speed of the file.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1955087] [NEW] bluetooth cannot transfer files to phone although connected

2021-12-16 Thread Gordon Fitch
Public bug reported:

What I expected: File is transferred.

What happened: transfer fails with mysterious error code (0x53) which

transfer fails.

Status in file-roller package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
This issue is very simple. A zip file can legally contain multiple
entries with the same name in the same path. If you attempt to open a
file that has the same name and path as another, you can only open one
of them, and cannot open the other.

An example zip file has been provided which contains two
`fabric.mod.json` files. If either one of them is double clicked
within file roller, it will only open one of them, and never the
  other.

  example.zip
  |
  |
  fabric.mod.json (2.1kb)

For me, the 484 byte file is always opened, even if you double click
  the 2.1kb file.

Bug description:
The netplan configuration in ubuntu-raspi-settings (and more widely,
the network-config in the gadget used on the server images) fails to
rename the internal ethernet interface on Pi 3B and 3B+ models from
"en" to "eth0". In the netplan case this is because the
driver matching logic doesn't handle space-separate driver matches
(although the underlying networkd system does); in the cloud-init case
it simply refuses to rename interfaces that aren't matched by full MAC
  address.

The intended fix is to stop attempting to do this via netplan or
cloud-init, and simply handle this via a networkd .link file in
ubuntu-raspi-settings. This will require an update to the relevant
seeds as this package is currently only pulled into ubuntu-desktop-
  raspi, not ubuntu-server-raspi.

Bug description:
When attempting to 'apt upgrade' on the pi zero 2 with the 64 bit
Impish image and nothing new installed to it, update-initramfs fails
  like so:

  Setting up linux-firmware (1.201.1) ...
  update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.13.0-1008-raspi
  Killed
   E: mkinitramfs failure
zstd -q -19 -T0 137

A simple workaround for now is to switch to the old lz4 default:

  $ sudo apt install lz4
  $ sudo sed -i -e '/^COMPRESS=/ c COMPRESS=lz4'
/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf

  Original Workaround
  ===

Adding a swap file to the setup allowed 'apt -f install' to run
  successfully.

  How the device was setup
  1) xzcat | dd the sdcard with the impish 64 bit server image
  2) setup for serial over USB (dtoverlay=dwc2, modules-load=dwc2,g_serial,
link getty@ttyGS0.service
  ) as suggested in
https://www.tal.org/tutorials/raspberry-pi-zero-usb-serial-console
  3) resize partition 2 - fdisk delete partition 2 and recreate to use the rest
of the 16GB flash, e2fsck, resize2fs
  4) cp bcm2710-rpi-3-b.dtb bcm2710-rpi-zero-2.dtb per
https://waldorf.waveform.org.uk/2021/the-pi-zero-2.html
  5) boot, connect to wireless, ssh in
  6) apt update && apt upgrade
  7) observe above issue

Bug description:
At present, access to the GPIO pins is provided to the dialout group
by the udev rules from the rpi.gpio-common package. However, rpi.gpio
is a single GPIO library, and the device(s) it provides access to are
not specific to it. Moreover, the interface used is deprecated and the
/dev/gpiochip* interface is now the favoured mechanism for controlling
  the GPIO pins.

The choice of the dialout group appears reasonable (historically it's
used to provide access to the serial ports, and indeed the serial
ports are part of the GPIO header on Raspberry Pi devices), but the
rules should be extended to cover the modern /dev/gpiochip* devices,
the related /dev/spidev* and /dev/i2c-* devices, and should be placed
in a central location (i.e. ubuntu-raspi-settings) rather than in a
  specific GPIO library (like rpi.gpio).

Related to this is LP: #1923363 which seeks to ensure equal access
across images (the default user is currently granted "dialout" group
membership on the pi server images, but not the desktop ones).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1672139]

2021-12-16 Thread Eberger-c
Likewise, my gratitude for this simple and useful feature. Now if only
someone could make a pdf viewer that would print pdfs as well as does
Edge, without losing lines and the bottom of the page and other
features, I would be totally happy with Firefox. I will post this as a
separate bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1941752]

2021-12-16 Thread Lukáš Karas
Created attachment 144593
sample image that is causing the crash

Here is jpg file that is causing the the crash. It is clear that libexiv
is throwing exception when it tries to parse date. This exception is not
catched in gwenview.

$ exiv2 -P X print  test.jpg
Xmp.tiff.SoftwareXmpText13 digiKam-7.1.0
Xmp.tiff.DateTimeXmpText19 2014-09-13T14:36:40
Xmp.tiff.ImageWidth XmpText 4 3110
Xmp.tiff.ImageLength XmpText 4 1553
Xmp.xmp.CreatorTool XmpText13 digiKam-3.5.0
Xmp.xmp.CreateDate XmpText19 2014-09-13T14:36:40
Xmp.xmp.MetadataDate XmpText19 2014-09-13T14:36:40
Xmp.xmp.ModifyDate XmpText19 2014-09-13T14:36:40
Xmp.xmp.Rating XmpText 1 2
Xmp.exif.DateTimeOriginalXmpText19 Uncaught exception:
basic_string::at: __n (which is 19) >= this->size() (which is 19)

$ echo $?
1

So, fix is obvious. But where it should be fixed? In libexiv or
gwenview?

Ubuntu 21.10
exiv2 0.27.3
gwenview 21.08.1

Status in gwenview package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Since the recent security update of exiv2, Gwenview crashes when
trying to open image files that got exported by darktable.

  Steps to reproduce:

  * Make a test installation of Kubuntu 21.04 in VirtualBox
  * Install all updates
  * Install darktable
  * Copy one of the images in /usr/share/wallpapers (or any other image) to
your home directory and open it with darktable
  * Within darktable, export a copy of the image (no need to do any actual
modifications)
  * Try to open that copy with Gwenview. Gwenview will crash.

I'm attaching a crash report hinting that this is related to exiv2.

  Temporary workaround:
If I downgrade libexiv2-27 to 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.4, Gwenview doesn't crash, so
it seems the crash is related to changes in 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.5.

I don't know if the underlying cause is actually some bug in exiv2,
  Gwenview or darktable.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1851250] Re: [snap] chromium-browser snap cannot upload files outside ~

2021-12-16 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Thanks for testing, and for the feedback Alberto.
Let's say it's okay to assume that the portal is already running and accessible
through the bus (i.e. the ListActivatableNames path won't be taken − there's an
upstream bug to track this:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1278336).

Then indeed the problem remains for xenial, bionic and focal where the
XDG desktop portal isn't new enough. But it's unlikely that a new major
version of the portal can be backported to these release with a regular
SRU, so it looks like a "Won't Fix" status to me, what do you think?

After upgrading from 19.04 to 19.10, my Chromium package was converted

live in /etc/chromium-browser/default, and noticing that GMail is no
longer able to play a sound when a call comes in, now I see that I am
unable to upload files from anywhere except my home directory!
  Connecting chromium:removable-media as in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-
browser/+bug/1832711 does not help with anything else. Is there some
way to let the file upload dialog work on any file my user account has
access to? Or run this snap in --classic mode? If not, this seems like
a critical limitation, as I need this multiple times a day. Switching
to Chrome or Firefox cannot be the only workaround for this, surely?

  [MIR] libdecor-0

Status in libdecor-0 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  MIR libdecor-0

  Identified TODOs:
  - update d/watch in Debian

  [Availability]
The package libdecor-0 is already in Ubuntu universe.
The package libdecor-0 builds for the architectures it is designed to work on.
  Link to package [[https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdecor-0|libdecor-0]]

  [Rationale]
  - The package libdecor-0 will generally be useful for our user base as it
helps
with window decorations in wayland environments which are becoming the
common
way.
  - The package libdecor-0 is a new runtime dependency of package libsdl2that
we already support

  [Security]
  - No CVEs/security issues in this software in the past (but also is rather
new)
  - no `suid` or `sgid` binaries
  - no executables in `/sbin` and `/usr/sbin`
  - Package does not install services
  - Packages does not open privileged ports (ports < 1024)

  [Quality assurance - function/usage]
  - The package works well right after install (well it is a lib, but
the demo programs or e.g. qemu->libsdl->libdecore works well without config

  [Quality assurance - maintenance]
  - The package is maintained well in Debian/Ubuntu and has not too many
and long term critical bugs open (but again, it is rather new)
- Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdecor-0/+bug
- Debian https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=libdecor-0
  - The package does not deal with exotic hardware we cannot support

  [Quality assurance - testing]
  - The package does not run a test suite on build time, but it has
an autopkgtest defined
  - The package runs an autopkgtest, and is currently passing on
all architectures, link to test logs:
 https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/l/libdecor-0/
These tests are simple (and therfore marked superficial) but given how small
and specialized it is there isn't much more that can be done on that level.
To make up for that (being a lib) it will be used and tested in higher levels
   like more small tests in
https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/l/libsdl2
and even higher in users of libsdl.

Testing therefore exists, but isn't perfect. Yet since it is a UI thing in
a small lib there is only so much one can do on this level in an automated
fashion on a non-screen test VM.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1955001] Re: File reading speed is slow

2021-12-16 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report, you reported the issue against nautilus,
is the issue specific to this software?

Title:
  File reading speed is slow

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I created the user's home directory on the computer's mechanical hard drive,
but the user's login speed is very slow, and the speed of viewing the file
content in the desktop environment is slow. At the same time, I tested the hard
disk read speed:
   hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb

Title:
Nautilus launcher does not bring open instance to front

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Launch an instance of Nautilus, then launch another package, e.g.
Gedit or Terminal. Click on Gedit launcher brings Gedit window to the
front, also with Terminal. Click on Nautilus launcher does not bring
Nautilus window to the front but opens another instance of Nautilus.
If Nautilus is hidden behind a browser say, you can end up with
multiple instances of Nautilus all in the background.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1871644]

2021-12-16 Thread Mikolov73
I have posted a bug #1744496 in which I explain that on elementary OS
6.0 Odin the corners are still square. It seems on elementary OS `-moz-
window-titlebar` doesn't work. `-moz-gtk-csd-titlebar-radius` does work,
as you can see when the dark theme is enabled. Can anyone look at this
bug?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1871644]

2021-12-16 Thread Catalin-sasca-z
Created attachment 9254735
dim corners.png

Verified on 96.0a1 and 97.0a1 that the top side is rounded and look good
on Wayland session under Ubuntu 20.04. Although while getting the
notification to make Firefox as default, a dim effect is active and the
rounded parts have corners because of that (see attachment and zoom in).
Any idea? Thank you!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1954587]

2021-12-16 Thread DarkTrick
Hm...
For some unrelated reasons I had to reboot my system a couple of times today
and now the problem seems gone.
This is a little weird, because I rebooted several times before, but the
problem kept appearing.

For now I'll close the bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1955038] [NEW] Nautilus launcher does not bring open instance to front

2021-12-16 Thread seoras
Public bug reported:

Launch an instance of Nautilus, then launch another package, e.g. Gedit
or Terminal. Click on Gedit launcher brings Gedit window to the front,
also with Terminal. Click on Nautilus launcher does not bring Nautilus
window to the front but opens another instance of Nautilus. If Nautilus
is hidden behind a browser say, you can end up with multiple instances
of Nautilus all in the background.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1955001] Re: File reading speed is slow

2021-12-16 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it
will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1955001

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Bug reporting is mostly about finding & fixing problems thus preventing
future users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

Title:
  File reading speed is slow

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I created the user's home directory on the computer's mechanical hard drive,
but the user's login speed is very slow, and the speed of viewing the file
content in the desktop environment is slow. At the same time, I tested the hard
disk read speed:
   hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1713021] Re: Minimize/unminimize animations do nothing for the first 100ms or so

Minimize/unminimize animations do nothing for the first 100ms or so

Status in GNOME Shell:
  Expired
Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
gnome-shell's minimize/unminimize animations do nothing for almost the
first 100ms or so. They look slow because the easeInExpo curve does
nothing for most of the first half of the animation time:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/clutter/-/blob/master/doc/reference/easing-
  modes.svg

A much more responsive, natural and fluid curve with the same overall
duration would be to use an easeOut* curve.
