[Desktop-packages] [Bug 730311] Re: firefox takes enormous amounts of RAM and swap space, growing until system crashes
Alright, let's come to an end here. FF60 ESR will finally drop market share below 10% / IE levels, and nobody cares about performance problems and memory leaks on marginal browsers when they were ignored at 30% market share already. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 730311] Re: firefox takes enormous amounts of RAM and swap space, growing until system crashes
Still an issue with FF ESR 52.9.0 and 8GB of RAM on Ubuntu 18.04. Grows like cancer from a few hundred MB at startup to 2GB+, gets laggy above 1.5GB, gets unusable at 2GB. Not killing the entire system anymore, but I can tell memory usage from zippyness of loading pages and reaction time of especially JS-heavy sites. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/730311 Title: firefox takes enormous amounts of RAM and swap space, growing until system crashes Status in firefox package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Binary package hint: firefox On my T400 with 2GB of RAM / 7GB of swap, the current beta12 of firefox takes easily up to 1 GB of RAM and swap combined; I have also observed amounts of up to 1GB RAM _AND_ 4GB of Swap yesterday. So some 10 minutes after the last action, the screen would lock as usual, presenting the blueish unlock prompt (simple locker). This time, however, when I returned, a gray lock screen with Debian logo was presented. I was able to unlock it, and after a fraction of a second, the screen was locked again. This can be repeated for arbitrary amounts of logins, it will never unlock completely. Ctrl+Alt+L for manual locking was also not possible. One can see the desktop running behind normally for this short amount of time, but of course take no actions. From a different user and graphical session, I tried disabling the lock at all, but this doesn't seem to work for gnome-screensaver at all. Or maybe not for the current session, but that's not helpful for this acute problem as well. I was able to find and kill a suspicious gnome-screensaver from a shell session, after that the main session is completely unlocked. Manually locking now brings the old simple locker back up. Everything seems fine. Questions: 1) Where the heck did gnome-screensaver on a KDE system come from? I never configured that. And after killing it once, it's gone. 2) Even if it got installed and configured by one of the latest updates (I don't see that from the packages shown above), gnome-screensaver has a re-lock loop on KDE. Public bug reported: Hi, pretty low urgency one: palimpsest just doesn't save position and size of the window, or, it doesn't use this information when started again. It always has it's default size that is too small to hit the "Unlock" button of a cryptsetup volume without enlarging or maximizing the window.
