[Desktop-packages] [Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file
I also miss this feature, but I agree that the way Windows does it did not make sense: the single-click-wait mechanism is inconsistent. I prefer OSX method of click-and-hold, this also has some analogy with touch-and-hold, and feels more natural. The F2 shourtcut works fine (to rename a file/folder you need to touch the keyboard anyway), but a shortcut mechanism on the touchpad/mouse seems more convenient and easy to remember. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48671 Title: Cannot rename by clicking on a file Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts: Confirmed Status in Nautilus: Confirmed Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: In Windows explorer, clicking a file and then clicking once more on the file name will enter rename file mode. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1052481] Re: Nautilus's split pane lacks an indicator for the active pane
Hi RaduStoica. Thanks for taking the time to investigate this. About the Nautilus versions issue, Ubuntu is using the 3.4 branch on its LTS release, and even if they backport an update to 3.6 (unlikely), the majority of users should keep the 3.4 for 3 years at least, so I think it worth fixing. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1052481 Title: Nautilus's split pane lacks an indicator for the active pane Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts: Confirmed Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Test case: Open Nautilus on any folder. Split pane using the F3 key. Click on an empty area on any pane. Both panes look the same, and its difficult (if not impossible) to know which panel is the active one. There are always at least five elements in this area: a. Icon for the application/package. b. Title (application name or package synopsis), usually four words or fewer. c. Summary or tagline, usually ten words or fewer. d. Price, often Free; or, if currently installed, an Installed icon and text and the date it was installed. https://launchpadlibrarian.net/110391101/installed.png e. Button labelled Install, Install…, Buy…, or Remove, depending on the situation. During installation/removal, this changes to a progress bar with a small Stop button. Occasionally there are additional elements: f. An average rating, shown as stars, and the number of ratings. g. A banner warning you that the item may be inappropriate: for example, This software requires a CD drive, but none are currently connected. h. Text for a package you've downloaded outside USC, Install this item only if you trust its origin. Currently this replaces the price, because USC has no idea whether or how much you paid for it. https://launchpadlibrarian.net/110980902/deb.png So, what are the problems? https://launchpadlibrarian.net/110980809/layout-annotated.png 1. The contents of the price+button ribbon, and (when present) the warning ribbon, are flush with the left and right edges of their colored backgrounds. This is ugly. We could fix this by adding some left and right padding inside, but then the text would no longer line up with the package description below it. Would that matter? Maybe, maybe not. We could fix that too, by adding padding to the package description as well. But then the overall description area would be further away from the edges of the window than the banner areas are. Would that matter? Maybe, maybe not. 2. The price/installed and warning ribbons are rather unattractive in themselves. In particular, they have no vertical borders, but dotted horizontal borders and a background color. These don't seem to go well together. The text in the price/installed ribbon is also bold and a bit clunky. 3. The Install/Install…/Buy button is far away from the price -- and the wider the window is, the further apart they are. Originally this was for semi-consistency with list views of multiple results, where we have a More Info button at the left end, and an Install button at the right end. https://launchpadlibrarian.net/110391422 /list-view.png but we want to reduce our use of list views anyway. One possibility for fixing this would be to put the button on the left side, with the price/installed text immediately to its right. Notice that dropdown menus such as the search engine selector or even the completion dropdowns on the awesome bar or the search box stop working. This happens when running in safe mode as well. As I said above it happens with the bookmarks-lens and with my simple python favorites-lens https://github.com/gbishop/favorites-lens but I don't think the problem is in the lens. Either lens is simply providing Unity with a URL. I assume Unity is supplying the URL to Firefox with something akin to xdg-open. But xdg-open does not cause this problem. Open a Nautilus window 2. On the left column, click on a disk on the top-left, under Devices. The contents of the disk are shown on the right 3. Start typing Expected: search should be done in the contents of the directory, on the right Observed: search is done within the left column. Additionally: 4. Click inside the window on the right, where the contents are being displayed, but click on the empty part, not on a particular item 5. Start typing - Expected: at least NOW, the contents should be searched - Observed: search is STILL done within the left column, until you click some file. Searching the left column is mostly useless and I wonder whether one may _ever_ want to search the left column; however, it's just one more possibility, so why not. However, when you have clicked on a disk unit and the contents have been displayed, focus, or whatever determines the default place where search will occur when typing, should definitely be on the contents on the right by default. Also, clicking within one of the two areas should be enough to switch on which one search will be done, it should not be necessary to select a particular item so change focus. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1072135] [NEW] Cancelling a file transfer should delete the incomplete file on the destination path
Public bug reported: This is not a bug but a possible usability improvement. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1049144] [NEW] Fix Brasero user experience
Public bug reported: My first experience using Brasero to burn a DVD is awful, and since it is the default tool shipped with Ubuntu, should be revised by the QA team. What I want: Burn a mp4 movie transcoded as DVD. What I get: Obscure dialog messages, packages needed to be installed via the terminal, and tons of error messages. Chronicle: From Brasero I selected the Video Project, dragging a mp4 file to the Window. Brasero recognized the file just fine, and I pushed the Burn button. First message I received was Installing packages by files isn't supported. Closing that, I get another dialog with some instructions: Please install the following manually and try again: mplex (GStreamer plugin), dvdauthor. Just for testing, I searched for this packages on the Ubuntu Software Center. None found. Then I searched for Brasero, opening the more info, taking a look at the Add-ons section. None. Time for some Terminal work. sudo apt-get install dvdauthor was easy, but I could not find mplex. Since the message says it is a GStreamer plugin, I searched on Google and found that the plugin is part of the gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse, so I installed that. Closing Brasero, opening it again, now it ask for vcdimager, but odd enough, it autoinstalls the package. First try, Brasero stopped just before burning anything with a log message: Checking session consistency (brasero_burn_check_session_consistency brasero-burn.c:1739) - Session error : An internal error occurred (brasero_burn_record brasero-burn.c:2856) Second try, Brasero starts to transcode, and then burn the DVD, but it stop with another log message: 27 - Some files may be corrupted on the disc. I ended installing Bombono, that worked just fine on the first try. My thoughts: Bugs aside, the experience is not good. Even an advanced user could have problems trying to install the dependencies.
