Re: Volunteers wanted: Hackathon organization at ApacheCon Berlin 2019

2019-08-13 Thread Julian Feinauer
Hey Max, Myrle, Paul and all others,

I just had a short Slack discussion with Paul who gave me some details and I
prepared the attached announcement.
I would kindly ask you to review it (dates, text general and response mails and
sender) and then we can throw it out, I guess.

@Myrle Krantz you take care of that, right?

Julian

```
Dear Apache Project PMC Members:
There will be space at ACEU 2019 dedicated to a hackathon. The space
will be available on 23./24.10 from the start of each
day’s schedule until 7:00 PM, with the possible exception of during
keynote and single-track / conference-wide events.
We want to invite everybody to participate on the Hackathon. Collaborative
development on project
source code, improvements to project documentation, and development of
example apps or tools built upon one or more Apache projects are all
encouraged. Furthermore, it's a nice opportunity to get in touch with other
contributors.
More details will be available leading up to the event, but here’s
generally what to expect:
- Dedicated space with chairs, power, wifi, snacks, and caffeine.
- Tables dedicated to specific participating projects.
- ‘Getting Started’ discussions for new and aspiring committers
- (industrial) IoT Corner with industrial equipment to code against
With most logistical concerns now attended to, we are identifying
interested participants, promoters, and coordinators.  Are you an
PMC member or committer willing to do the following on behalf of
your project:
- Operate a dedicated hackathon table for some time
- Designate collaborative work for your project’s table to help hackers
focus
- Encourage your community to hack at your project’s table
- Spread the word throughout your commuity!
Interested? Reply to plann...@apachecon.com to reserve a table for some time
for your project that we can advertise to your community.
We are currently working out a Hackathon schedule that will be posted,
letting attendees know when they should expect activities related to
their project and various open sessions to take place. If you will
take on the lead role for your project, we will work with you to plan,
prepare, and generate interest in the wider community.
If you aren’t interested in hacking yourself but want to help others,
we could also use persons who are willing to do one or more of the
following:
- Operate the primary information table in the hackathon space for several
hours
- Give a short introductory tools or skills presentation / answer questions
Thanks!
ACEU Hackathon Organization Team
P.S. We invite anyone who has ideas to share with the planning
committee, or is considering participating in any way, to let us know
via dev@community.apache.org
Do we have time slots already allocated in the schedule or is that still
How far are we with the announcement for the PMCs?
Hi Julian,
I think I have most of the information you need – just let me know what
you need to know. You can also prepare an email with spaces and I'll
fill it out.
I thought I've sent some information on that to this list yesterday?
Didn't my mail reach you?
In any case: If you need any support, don't hesitate to ask :)
Hi all,
I'm currently drafting the ANNOUNCE mail (based on Steves mail of ACNA).
Where do I find informations like.. location... times... whatever we provide...
something? __
If I don’t find these informations than I just prepate it with empty spaces for
somebody (Myrle?) to fill it in and send it out.
Hi,
we've blocked a room for both the 23rd and 24th October. We will use the
room coffee break on the 23rd to do the keysigning, but other than that
there is nothing scheduled yet – so there are enough slots available :)
@Julian: In case you need any help or have any questions, please let me
know.
Hey Mandi,
Are you any good at creating presentation templates?  I believe at this
point we do not yet have presentation templates for either of the two
ApacheCons.
And of course anything you can do to promote ApacheCon is very much
appreciated.  This year at ApacheCon Europe in Berlin we have a special
focus on design.  The Open Source Design Initiative is giving us an entire
track of content.
Myrle
Hey,
I just became privy to this conversation.
I'm pretty well stuck in the middle of the U.S. - Wichita, Kansas. But if
there's any graphic design, planning, organizing, or promoting that still
needs done, I'd be more than happy to offer my services.
My skills are pretty lay when it comes to actual coding / hacking so I've
been hesitant and haven't really know how to contribute in the past ...
even though I've really wanted to.
I'm a whiz at Photoshop (although I use G.I.M.P. currently to fight the
good fight) and have quite a few connections throughout the Midwest. Please
LMK if there's any way I can be of assistance all the way out here in
no-man's-land.
Re: Volunteers wanted: Hackathon organization at ApacheCon Berlin 2019
2019-08-02 Thread Myrle Krantz
Hi Julian,
The most important thing we need now is actually just an announcement to
the PMC's that we are going to be holding a hackathon in Berlin.  I expect
the rest to be self-organization of the communities.  I don't think we need
anything elaborate like what's going on for Vegas.  A hackathon is a
success if people find some time to work with each other.  And for that
they need seats, wifi, and power, which we will already be providing.  So
all that's missing now is awarenes.
Would you do me a favor and draft an announcement please?  Write it the way
you would like it to be seen by the PLC4X community, but imagine that it's
going to all the hacking communities.  If you can do that, I'll make sure
it gets sent.
Best Regards,
Myrle
(Thank you so much!)
Hi,
I just jump onto this track.
I think the plc4x community would like to "participate" in the hackathon and do
some things there.
So If I can help you with something or you have more information come back to
me or keep me in the loop : )
Not sure I have enough experience to lead the organization of a hackathon, but
am more than willing to partner up with Max to gain some traction and make this
happen. As he mentioned, we are both based in Berlin, which makes it pretty
convenient. @Max, let's sync on the status of this — I see Mathias (Baetens)
has also showed interest in jumping on board.
Again, sorry for losing track of this.
Hi Max,
My apologies for the slow response.  I didn't realize I'd lost this
e-mail.  Yes, please work together with Marta.  Note that Steve Blackmon (
sblack...@apache.org) is sending out an announcement to the PMC's about the
ApacheCon NA hackathon soon.  He just sent a draft to plann...@apachecon.com.
You might want to coordinate with him to make sure ACEU19 is included in
the same announcement.
Best Regards,
Myrle
Hi Myrle,
I'd like to help realize the hackathon in Berlin. Like Austin mentioned, we are
organizing a hackathon a month earlier at ApacheCon NA.
I can work together with Marta. We are both based in Berlin.
Re: Volunteers wanted: Hackathon organization at ApacheCon Berlin 2019
2019-07-09 Thread Myrle Krantz
Hey Marta,
Can I put you in charge of the hackathon in general for Berlin?  I
basically would just like to have you make sure projects know about it
(especially those who have speakers at the conference), and make sure that
if projects need anything (within reason of course), that our producer
knows about it.  If you want to attend sync-ups with ACNA, that's up to you.
We do have a community partnership in place with FlinkForward, so I can
help put you in touch with them if it helps you in any way.
Best Regards,
Myrle Krantz
Sensible thought, Steve,
I was imagining the sort of things that get setup and contributed to (by me
and others I collaborated with) for Vegas to be setup in such a way to
easily replicated in Berlin.
Re: Volunteers wanted: Hackathon organization at ApacheCon Berlin 2019
2019-07-08 Thread Steve Blackmon
Hi Myrle,
I expect the process and mechanics of hackathon planning and execution of the
ACNA and ACEU hackathons will be more similar than different, cultural
differences between a Las Vegas casino and Kulterbrauerei aside.
It makes sense to set up a different accountable event leadership group, but we
should try to coordinate our efforts closely.  To that end I invite everyone on
this thread to dial into any ACNA hackathon weekly planning meeting (Sundays at
11AM CST) and contribute, and I will be happy to participate in the planning
effort for Berlin as well.
2019-07-02 Thread Marta Paes Moreira
Hi, Gris.
Thanks for including me in the thread! I am definitely interested in being
part of the general organization as an extra pair of Berlin-based hands.
About specific initiatives, it would be great to partner up with Aizhamal
to do something around documentation! I also took the time to discuss
internally the possibility of a Flink Hackathon, but October will be a bit
sketchy with Flink Forward in the horizon. We can discuss the feasibility
of this if there is agreement that it would be a valuable initiative.
Re: Volunteers wanted: Hackathon organization at ApacheCon Berlin 2019
2019-06-26 Thread Griselda Cuevas
I'm cc'ing folks who might be able to help prepare some project specific
hackathons. Maybe some of them would even be interested in helping with the
general organization?
Alex, David, Matthias & Max - would you be interested in driving a Beam
Hackathon?
Aizhamal & Marta, any interest in hosting a documentation hackathon?
David, Aizhamal, any interest in an Airflow hackathon?
