[digitalradio] QST article on HF use of JT65A due July 07
I have been advised that the use of JT65A on HF will be featured in QST' July edition. Steve Ford will discuss the mode in his column and I have supplied some screen shots . Seems the K3UK Bozo Guide caught Steve's eye (even though he clearly is not a bozo) . This QST publicity should bring even more activity to this exciting weak signal digital mode. Steve's columns have ignited much interest in other modes after he featured them. -- Andy K3UK Skype Me : callto://andyobrien73 www.obriensweb.com
[digitalradio] Re: The Bozo's Guide to HF JT65A has been updated.
Andy, Nice work on the document. I am just a few days behind you on the learning curve. I was able to get it set up and running with the documentation provided with the software but a few things had to be learned by experience and experimentation. Your document has all the essential information for the new user and should make this mode useable for many new operators. I had an exciting introduction to JT65A the day before you published your document. After reading about this mode on this group for several weeks I finally downloaded and installed it last Friday. Since my computer has multiple sound cards, the information in the DOS window was essential for selecting the correct input and output sound card numbers. After getting it set up I hit the monitor button and watched the trace for awhile (7076 KHz). I couldn't hear anything but wondered what that faint line was on the waterfall. I was astounded when ZS6WN popped up in the text window with -23 dB SNR. After sending a few replies it was a thrill to see his response. The only thing I would suggest adding is a little more explanation about how to use the information in the DOS window to select sound card numbers for the input and output with multiple sound cards installed on the computer. Thanks for your administration of this group and for the document. Ed WB6YTE --- In [EMAIL PROTECTED], Andrew O'Brien [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The Bozo's Guide to HF JT65A has been updated. [digitalradio] The Great MT63/Olivia/Throb/DomicoEX/JT65A test
I would like stations to test weak signal propagation and decoding characteristics , this weekend's conditions look ideal (i.e. propagation is expected to be poor on 20M and up). I would suggest that stations pair off and work each other via Olivia at first, establish the lowest workable power levels between the two stations using Olivia, and then switch to MT63 DominoEx , Throb, and JT65A. I suggest you use the same frequency for the tests, please avoid the standard JT65A frequencies (14076, 7076) . Always QRL? Please report your results here. Feels free to play around and add other tests if you like. Andy K3UK
[digitalradio] 14100 kHz USB Voice Scrambling Intruders
I noticed 2 stations on 14100 kHz USB today at 1905-1915 UTC using voice scramblers. Does anyone have a decoder for them? The scrambler type is the kind that is synchronized with some tones at beginning and end of the transmission, and it uses SSB with filtered changing audio frequency reference point speech inversion. The 14MHz propagation here in California was open to Mexico, Central and South America. Bonnie KQ6XA

Re: [digitalradio] New user assistance
Have you tried opening up the Donner interface? There is a limited amount of reduction by adjusting the control inside the box. Also, what software are you using? MixW has a control built into the software that will reduce the output and probably some of the other software programs have such a configuration control as well. 73 Mark KQ0I Des Moines, Iowa --- wd4elg_base [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Friend of mine is using Ten-Tec Paragon, Donner interface and HP Brio PC. Re: [digitalradio] New user assistance
I might mention that upon looking at the Donner's website, they had a USB to COM serial adapter but they were not sure if it worked with MS Vista. I contacted them recently and had several e-mail exchanges with Mrs. Donner since she wanted to know about my experiences with Vista and I shared some of the pros and cons. Their adapter is the same as sold by other suppliers such as Newegg. It is a no name kind of product and based upon the picture and mini CD disk and packaging almost has to be the same product. Not only does this interface work with Vista, the drivers are already in Vista so you just plug it in and it works. Although Vista has some downsides, I am beginning to see that the positives well outweigh the negatives, especially for average and/or non-technical users. I like stuff that just works for a change. Especially for digital radio purposes. Since DX Lab Commander works well with Multipsk, this continues to be my digital software choice. One simplification I have recently tried is to use wxLogbook in place of the DX Lab logging program which I have not been able to get to work with Vista (although others claim they have had no problem). wxLogbook seems to work just fine with Vista. 73, Rick, KV9U Mark Milburn wrote: Have you tried opening up the Donner interface? [digitalradio] JT65A - sound card selection
I have two sound cards, the windows 0 card is my std Windows default with speakers connected, the second card 1 is my second 2nd sound card and connected to a Microham Keyer for all of my ham radio sound card applications. In the WSJT setup Options screen there is an Audio in and Audio out setting, the DOS screen that boots up with WSJT correctly ID's the two sound cards but also includes the MS windows mixer. The mixer shows as 0, the default card as 1 and the one I use for rig interface as 2. I’ve tried all sorts of manual entries in the audio in and out but can not seem to get much response form the screen on the main program or from the secondary window. When I select options on the 2nd waterfall style window and look at sound card it seems to default to the default sound card even though I think that I have correctly selected the 2nd card. I can manual selected the desired card but it will not stay set for the WSJT. Anyone out there using a second card for this application? What is the correct audio IN/Out, is it card number or channel number for the card? Anyone successfully setup a Microham Keyer? The program successfully does PPT through my current setting. It’s possible that I may need to set up my 2nd card as my default windows card to get the correct match, any recommendations? [digitalradio] JT65 on HF , I found who started it !
I have been trying to found who started the out of the box thinking and began using JT65A on HF. Here is what I found (courtesy of WSJTGROUP , a Yahoogroup). For the past three weeks I and a few other Hams have been trying JT65B on the HF bands with some degree of success. One of the most popular frequencies is 18.102. So far I have had A QSO with at least 8 different stations including 8Q7WB and JE5FLM. These contacts were on bands that were supposedly dead or nearly dead at the time. My observations about the JT65B mode on HF is that the software is very good at decoding signals as low as -26db, surrounded by PSK/RTTY/AMTOR QRM and a considerable amount of QRN. 8Q7WB was worked at -24db with PSK at +400hz and -500hz and some local QRN. JT decoded every transmission from Isao with no problem despite the PSK signals being anywhere from S2 to S5 on the meter. Since I can very rarely use 6 and 2 meters anymore due to horrendous line noise that doesn't seem to bother most of the HF bands I find that JT65B on HF is fun. It's not EME but on a dead band it can be a bit exciting. I am not using a big antenna setup on HF, just an 80M delta loop and 25 - 30 watts output. So far I have made QSO's on 40, 30, 20 and 15 with JT65B. Mike VE3FGU - Then the author of WSJT replied Re: [wsjtgroup] WSJT ON hf bands Hi Mike, Your results with JT65B on HF are very interesting! I encourage you to try the same experiments using JT65A, some time soon. Your bandwidth requirements will then be cut in half, to only 178 Hz. This means half as much chance for in-band QRM from other signals, and it means less QRM from your signal to other operators. Frequency stability and doppler broadening should be only a minor factor on the HF bands, and JT65A should give you about 1 dB better sensitivity than JT65B. With best wishes, -- 73, Joe, K1JT I think JE5FLM , Mike, and a few others started it around March 23 and then we digitalradio folks first picked out the unknown signals , K3UK reported an unknown signal on March 28 and after a few guesses Joe, N8FQ said Sounds like JT65 to me. Steinar suggested a TF3 was conducting tests. On March 31 2007, Andy Confirmed the reception was JT65A. - Andy K3UK Skype Me : callto://andyobrien73 www.obriensweb.com
[digitalradio] New on PSK31 and JT65A
I recently got my new Navigator interface and was able to get on PSK31 without much trouble using it and DXLabs WinWarbler. I already made a number of QSOs. However, when I saw the information on JT65A, I was intrigued. I downloaded the program and the Bozo's Guide (Yes, I am a Bozo) and after playing around with it for about a day, I finally got it to work. My first QSO was with ZS6WN and I have already worked a number of European stations along with JA and VK stations. I have copied a few W's but have not been able to get any to come back to me. The main problem I had getting the software to work correctly was realizing that I needed to push the soundcard output gain to almost maximum. Running PSK31 on WinWarbler is much more sensitive and I have to keep the gain way down when running that. This mode is great! At this point in the sunspot cycle, it is difficult to make QSO's in this part of the world. Sure, it can be done, but the openings are short and few. This mode really helps make QSOs when the rest of the band is completely quiet! I will be on again tonight (around 1000 Z to 1500 Z) on 20 m. Maybe this time I will work a US station or two this time! 73, Bob, 9V1QQ
