[digitalradio] Re: 500 KHz WSPR center of activity from the uk 502.4 KHz dial usb

2009-01-26 Thread Graham
Thanks Steinar,

Well we had a 100% increase in wspr activity in ther UK on 500khz ,
jumped from 2 stations to 4 ! and may be more to follow as finally
the 'linear' concept has taken hold.

The frequeny I used 503 was well inside the band , but some moved
up , into the sideband noise from the lw station on 252 Khz - gives a
504 carrier with am sidebands , 20 db over the noise at my qth. I was
seeing false decodes at times.

There is a dead zone close in to 504 , so we'v moved close in with
503.9 as the carrier center, looks to be ok. I can see LA9BEA is
uploading to the wspr database

 http://wsprnet.org/meptspots.php?

Tnx- Graham ..

2009-01-26 Thread Graham
As a means to enable the casual and ardent WSPR user to establish a
transmitting or monitoring station covering the uk 500 band a
generalised frequency has been adopted, being defined as dial
frequency and ERP power.

The dial frequency follows normal WSPR practice, where as the power
reported in ERP may differ from the norm.

The efficiency of low band antennas falls well short of 'hf'
systems , reporting a power to the Ae of say 100 watts for a erp of
100 mW would not convey too much to the observer, ERP should give a
better reporting structure.

[digitalradio] There is a new sheriff in town.

2009-01-26 Thread James - KB7TBT

There is a new sheriff in town. The FCC has appointed Laura Smith to take Riley
Hollingsworth's former position in enforcement.

The FCC's "Special Counsel for Amateur Radio" slot has gone unfilled for 6
months thus she has a backlog of work ahead of her. Fortunately she is up to
the task. Laura is a seasoned FCC veteran with a broad communications
background at both the FCC and in the private sector.

The FCC has been slow to fill the position and for a while we wondered if
Riley's successor would ever be named. It looks like they were waiting for the
right person. Now that Laura is on the job, let's give her our full support. If
you have an enforcement issue, she may be reached by e-mail at:
laura.sm...@fcc.gov

Amateur radio has always been somewhat "self policed" but when peer pressure is
not enough to maintain civility, then a stronger hand is needed. The FCC has
the muscle to demand compliance of the few wayward operators. We can help also.
Our bands are not perfect, newer licensee's need guidance on how to properly
share the many bands, frequencies and modes of operation that we radio amateurs
are privileged to use. Reach out and guide (elmer) someone so that they do not
become an "enforcement" issue. That is part of elmering also; it is not just
about technical items.

I know that some of you are wondering, "Is Laura a ham?" No, not yet, but she
does have the study guides.

If you attend the Dayton Hamvention 2009 - May 15-17, you will have a chance to
visit with her.

We welcome Laura to this position and wish her success.

When they closed the store here in Cedar Park, TX, the "deals" were a
joke. They had folks out by the street waving signs that said "70 to
90% off", but the digital cameras were only marked down 10% from MSRP.
All I was interested in buying was one of the bar code scanners from
their checkout lines, but the store manager said they weren't going to
sell those.

I feel the reason that the digital voice group on 14,236 has so much
QRM is because most don't know what DV signal sounds like.
I must agree with you about 7.173. But unlike DV signal you would
think that they would know there was something on the frequency
with the SSTV signal.

Now that's good one... ;-) as always one should ask on phone if the
frequency is in use, and thus one could/should call CQ one phone as
well.
The fact is that most of the QRM is caused by people who call CQ
in SSTV without receiving an ongoing QSO or a countrymen that is also
CQ-ing (whom they don't hear).

The thing is that that especially the 20m band is very crowded. So
calling on phone and going QSY is the thing to do. But people rarely
do that and thus it often becomes a mess in EU were many stations
double eachother in SSTV. Because many stations fall within ones skip
  and are thus not heard.

When you call in phone while for instance a countryman is already
calling CQ, this does not dramatically interfer with that other
station's CQ in SSTV. And his picture/call will still be readable. But
when for instance two Italians start calling CQ in SSTV together it
arrives as spaghetti in the Netherlands... ;-)
