Re: [digitalradio] Universal M-8000--Dinosaur in Today's World?

2010-05-09 Thread Ed Pusey
True, the M-8000 is old. I would suggest that it buying it or not depends on
whether you want to play around with it for what it does still do well:
SITOR/AMTOR, CW, WEFAX, GMDSS, PACTOR, and ACARS for example. For most of
those you can find free decoders that will cover them, but it is still fun
to use. If you happen to have interest in Russian stuff, the Cyrillic
feature is neat, but I have to confess to not having used that feature in a
decade. Used to be great for Russian CW and RTTY! If you do buy it,
hopefully it is one of the later versions, like v7.5; that will have more
systems --that aren't used anymore. :-)

Re: [digitalradio] Contestia 250 - new concept for usage

2010-05-09 Thread KH6TY

Hi Jaak,

Great idea to start a long test of Contestia 250/4!

Perhaps Contestia 250/8 can also be compared in actual practice to
Contestia 250/4. Contestia 250/8 is slower (at 29 wpm), but decodes 2 dB
deeper into the noise, which may be important when there is QSB (fading)
and the signal is already near the noise level ( such as when the band
is going out). Although I can type over 50 wpm, my personal feeling is
that 29 wpm is fast enough for a QSO, but Contestia at 78 wpm (3 dB less
sensitive) is more reasonable for passing traffic (if conditions can
support 3 dB less sensitivity). If not, then to be able to pass the
traffic at all, it has to be sent at a slower, more sensitive speed,
such as Contestia 250/4.

It all depends upon the average individual preference for typing speed
for QSO's vs conditions. This may become clear during your tests. I hope
the testers will make their minimum typing speed preferences known, as
well as how well the mode works.

Hi everybody

* Contestia derived from Olivia.
* Contestia 250/4 is channelfree like psk or rtty. BW less than

rtty and same as psk125, 39wpm, snr -9dB.
* So Contestia 250/4 is good narrowband alternative for psk31 or
rtty folk, specially when propagtion is not for psk/rtty or
  signals are too weak.
* Contestia 250/4 is good mode for mid- or high-latitude folk.
Many times there are disturbed propagation path not suited for
  psk or rtty.
* Concept testing period to the end of year 2010. Everybody is

  welcome.

[digitalradio] Universal M-8000--Dinosaur in Today's World?

2010-05-09 Thread wayner
I have a chance to buy a Universal M-8000 decoder from a friend for $100. Is
it worth it, or do todays digital software blow it out of the water? (DM 780,
MultiPsk, etc?) I am a SWL who has a NRD-535D hooked into a RF Systems DX-One
and a Wellbrook 1530 loop, and I just got started with digital modes. I
presently use DM 780, MultiPsk, FLdigi.
>From looking at the info, it looks like the M-8000 has a lot of modes that are
>not used anymore according to the spec sheets.
I am a new member of this group, and am trying to learn all I can about digital
modes. I live in Southern Indiana, and my main interests are Maritime
listening and trying to decode digital signals.
Thanks for any input you might have.

[digitalradio] QRV 14065-14115 : SDR RS-ID Skimmer

2010-05-09 Thread Andy obrien
I will be QRV today , simultaneously from 14065 to 14115 using
Multipsk with an SDR and RS-ID receive activated. I will thus be able
to receive any RS-IDs heard within this range . I will also have
Multipsk's Call ID activated. So lets see if I can hear you and log
you. I will still be able to log your ID to disk even if not in the
shack (I'll be in and out doing various things this Mother's Day).
Please make your calls in the USUAL way, no "broadcasting". Also
please "QRL?" first to make sure the frequency is not in use. I'm
interested in determining how much activity I miss when in non-SDR
mode and listening to just the traditional 3-4 Khz range on 20M . So,
please use RS ID when you call CQ or respond to a call. It would seem
to me that RS-ID and an SDR could be used to form some sought of
"RS-ID Skimmer" that could turn out to be as useful as a CW Skimmer.

e.g

13:45:25 UTC BPSK31 14.0710 M
13:44:56 UTC OLIVIA-8-50014.0730 M
13:42:26 UTC OLIVIA-16-500 1302 Hz

It is a little out of date with respect to software and does not seem
to be aware of some of the advanced capabilities that something like
Multipsk or SDR-Radio-Console can provide, but it is a good article.

Russell most digital operation is around 50.290 mc. I've seen it as low as
50.260 mc and as high as 50.300 mc.
