I can only think of one thing: "search"

Powered speakers have been brought up a few times.

Thanks, I am running SlimServer on a QNAP device, so will have to wait

[slim] Re: Annoying Apple Lossless Issue

2006-08-08 Thread leping

This bug is still there and very, very trouble some.

Try this classical CD:

Duutsche Grammophon B0003902-02
Lang Lang: Rachmaninnov Piano Concerto No.2 / Paganini Rhapsody
Orchestra of Mariinsky Theatre, Valery Gergiev, conducting

Starting from track #4, the Rhapsody was broken into many short
tracks, with the first one only 6" followed by several 18"-20" ones.
While the music actually plays continuously you can easily and
obviously hear the jumps and clicks.

I also believe what got clipped is the ends of the tracks not the
beginning.

WAV files ripped with EAC are OK (gapless). Anything iTunes
converts from the WAV files will jump, ALAC, AAC, and AIFF.

I have tried to go around this for several days but the conclusion
is the only way I can let my SB3 play continously is to keep the
music in WAV files, which does not keep tags so their tags are
actually in iTune library files, If I move the WAV files all the
tags
are lost, of course. So even when HD capacity is not a problem,
there is currently no good solutions to this bug!

Thanks,
Leing

[slim] Long delay before music plays with SB3

2006-08-08 Thread oriordan

I'm having performance issues when using SB3 to the point that my wife
wants to throw the thing away. Menus to navigate (e.g. Browse Music ->
Browse Albums) are very sluggish.

Worse, it can take easily 60 seconds from the time I select a song to
the time it actually starts playing. It gets to the point where we're
not sure if the box is actually responding or not, and definitely far
too long when our 4-year old wants to hear her favourite song right
now...

Once I select an album and it starts playing, there are no break-ups,
clicks, pops, or delays; it moves smoothly from one track to the next.
But stopping an album and choosing something else puts me back in the
same mode, though definitely not as slow as on the initial selection).

I have an IBM T42 Thinkpad running Win XP; connectivity is via a wired
ethernet. I am running 6.3 on the SB3. My library has about 500 albums
and 6000 tracks so it's reasonably large.

Things seem to have gotten worse recently. I assume all the delays are
on the PC side. Any suggestions on fixes, or where to look for the
source of the long delays?

[slim] Re: Qnap TS-101 Update

2006-08-08 Thread Owen

Thanks for your replies... well, I updated the firmware by updating and
running a 6.3.1 SlimServer on my Mac, linking the SB3 to it and hey
presto back to FW55.

Went back to the list of apparently running/detected SlimServers and
the TS-101 based "SLIMSERVER-01" was still there. Tried connecting to
it and the SB3 screen just goes black.

Had a go entering the TS-101 admin screen (no problem) and then changed
it from 6000 to 9000 and I was back to "Safari can’t open the page
“http://192.168.0.2:9000/”. The error was: “lost network connection”
(NSURLErrorDomain:-1005)".

So far, no joy. How can you check if a SlimServer is running correctly
on a TS-101? It was pre-installed at Progressive AV so I don't even
know how to re-install the software or if that would help. Over the
last few days this kit has been restarted more times than I care to
consider so that particular avenue is also closed in this case.

Oh so only the exterior walls are granite?

Do you know what the interior walls would be then? If they are
conventional wood frame + drywall then yes, there's something wrong.

I would contact the place where you bought the SB2. It may be a
hardware problem.

Your wireless signal should easily go 10.5 metres in thin air provided
you don't have massive interference, and you don't seem to.

this thread is getting interesting, I never had a chance to measure
such vital information about my home... ;-)
The sitting room is 9 by 12 meters, with a thin wood and glass door 3.7
meters high, 2.5 meters wide.
The AP is just outside this door.
58% is measured when the AP is in straigh, unobstructed view of the SB,
at 10.5 meters.
Don't think that, in this situation, outside walls, be it paper or
granite, can matter at all.

Granted that wireless cannot drill granite walls, I am saying here that

Sorry, it's not going to work through two feet of rock.

Your best bet is going to be some alternate technology such as
powerline networking or HPNA.

Where wireless fails, many people have had good look with Netgear

True, and the signal increase with distance from the AP is very large.

In the same room with your AP, you should be no lower than ~90% signal
provided the room isn't abnormally large.

Still, 2' thick granite walls will block everything: sound, radio
waves, 18-wheeler trucks out of control, etc. It's amazing anything
wireless is working at all.

You are very lucky that wireless networking is working at all for you.
2' thick granite walls! That'll absorb a good amount of electromagnetic
energy through sheer obstruction of the wave. These walls must block
sound like there's no tomorrow - they are blocking radio waves in the
same way.

Please realize that this is not really Slim Devices' fault - your
situation is very unusual and anything wireless won't work well with
conditions like that.

How's the range on your cordless phone?

2006-08-08 Thread bklaas

Interesting, but I'm very much of the same opinion as Jacob and KDF--

1. Sony saddles everything with their proprietary nonsense
2. 320x240 non-touchscreen isn't going to compete with the 800x480
touchscreen on the 770.

I'd be curious to see it in action, and to see how certain usability
issues with the 770 (wifi needs to reconnect after idle time, battery
life, etc.) fare with this thing. But the Mylo isn't coming close to my
"gotta have it" radar.

FWIW, an integrated QWERTY keyboard is borderline useless for
slimserver functions, IMO. I use a bluetooth keyboard on the 770, but
it only comes in handy for typing emails. Slimserver browsing is very
much a click-touch-browse kind of thing.

Think of having a TV with 700 channels that you have to wade through
every time to find the 10 you want to watch, not really just a cosmetic
issue. Also there seems to be a large number of people who no matter
how they tag there wma files still cant sort it out.

[slim] Re: SB3 wireless signal strenght

2006-08-08 Thread mrisager

I've upgraded to a better wireless access point (Linksys wrt54gl). That
helped a lot, but there are still occasional dropouts. Signal strength
varies between 10% and 35%

I then build a cantenna. I tried a parabolic type and a pringles type
antenna. I could not see any results out of that

I then upgraded the firmware in my Router to allow for increasing the
transmitting strength which gives me a signal strength of 12-40 %

The minipci card seems to be correctly installed.

Maybe I'll just buy another access point and place it where the
squeezebox can see it. My current access point is located 50ft away and
the signal has to pass 3 cement walls

MC,
I understand the physical restraints of my situation, but please note
that the figures I posted are related to an open space install.
So my SB is plain deaf. And that's why in a more difficult setup,
blocked by a staircase and a wall, it doesn't work.
Kudos to Fujitsu that survives such a tough environment without showing
any effort.

No, Mark, I'm not kidding about my home construction... I'm kidding

It's a pity that SB3 is even deafer... and you cannot upgrade the
antenna ! Hey Slimdevices, listen here !
I tried removing the antenna, but it got worse, as one might assume.
So I'll go shopping for an antenna upgrade for the SB, because the ones
on the AP are not removable.
Should I go for a larger rubber duck, or something like an USR 5482
patch antenna ? Am I right that the connector should be SMA reverse
plug ?
If SlimDevices will issue an SB4 with improved wireless connection,
I'll add it to my bedroom, I guess.

[slim] Asian Characters will not display

2006-08-08 Thread ob_kook

I know that this thread has shown up before, but even after tracking
several of them down and reading them through to their entirety, I
cannot solve this problem.

The problem is that:
1. Asian characters in streaming stations will not display properly
(Shoutcast Republic of Korea for example)

2. Ripped songs with unicode will not show up in my music library at
all (folder is there, song is missing). Even some albums which have a
mixture of english titles, Japanese titles, or mixed, the Japanese and
mixed titles will not show up.

I have the following:
SB2 - latest firmware distributed with 6.3.1
WinXP home Dell server with 6.3.1. 8468
Songs ripped in MP3, tagged with a unicode tagger program

I have installed proper unicode fonts (code2000 and cyberbit) in the
proper directory, restarted, have east asian language support installed
on my PC, etc. etc.

Am I missing something? This is driving my crazy...

Yup, two foot thick granite walls appear to be a bit of a no-goer.
Granite is dense. My SB2 connects to my router through a 120mm inch
cement block wall. The distance between them is 3 metres and I get 95%
signal strength.

Try not to buy a leisure centre. It'll be expensive and won't increase
you signal strength - http://www.nbleisuretrust.co.uk/page7.asp.
Try to get the funny round crisp things - www.pringles.com/.

However, it worries me that you get a good signal strength from your
laptop when it is sitiuated next to your SB. To me that points to a
problem with the wireless card in your SB. I remember that there were a
few similar reported problems with the SB1 and 2. The problem seemed to
be that the wireless card had come loose in the box. Reseating it cured
the problem.

I don't know how handy you are with a screwdriver but it may be worth
looking inside. Watch out for invalidating your warranty though (not
that Slim have seemed too worried about this in the past).

[slim] Radioio bit rate on 6.3.x

I upgraded slimserver from 6.2.2 to 6.3.1 and now radioio only streams
at 32kbps (was at 128). Ecch, sounds horrible - if I reinstall 6.2.2
reverts to 128kbps stream, but I would like to stick with 6.3.1. Is
this due to changing contractual arrangements 'tween Slim Devices &
Radioio and I now need to buy a premium membership from them or is
there something else I can do to re-establish higher bit rate under
6.3.1? Anyone else having this problem? ideas? Thanks!

Understated (provided you don't go for the flashy colours, look at the

good tuner. NiMH batteries and AC adapter included.

It isn't stereo, but you're not getting much stereo separation out of a

I think the Apple speakers, the Ipod Hi-Fi, is a brilliant, low-cost
solution with pretty good sound quality. I am an audiophile with
McIntosh labs equipment, but needed something portable for a summer

also connecting directly to the Ipod. It can be battery powered, if

No. That reduction through the wall is a killer, and the reduction
with distance seems high as well.

My SB2 is about 15' horizontally away from my router. There are two
wood frame/drywall walls in between. It gets 85-90% signal, 95% if I
remove the external antenna as I indicated in the edit to my last post.

My SB3 is one level down. I'd guess it's 30' away, with a
floor/ceiling and one wood frame/drywall wall in between. Signal
strength is 65-75%. As I indicated, the SB3 has poorer reception in
any location compared to an SB2. My SB2 was 75-80% in that location.

You should really look at some sort of hard-wiring arrangement or take
a look at a wireless repeater. Hard-wiring would be better though.

You're kidding, right? 'Cause that would certainly explain it! :-O

Do some investigation with NetStumbler, changing the channels and
reorienting the antenna. Also consider a high-gain antenna.

But if you're serious about your home construction being like that,
there's not much you can do. Look at the Ethernet-over-power adapters
neilcoburn recommended, because you'll have to get some sort of wired
connection. Obviously Ethernet would be better, but trying to install
Ethernet in walls like that would be difficult and expensive.

I would say that the cordless phone does not interfere with SB.

Also, please not that these reports relate to a fully functional setup,
that is, I can stream radio and ripped music without hiccups, provided
the AP and SB are no more than 10 meters apart, and with nothing in
between.

The fact that even in ideal conditions I only get 40% of signal,
explains why the SB won't hear the AP when moved upstairs.

About the house, it has 2 feet thick granite walls, and the staircase
is made of marble... but I am prepared to trade it au pair for an
african hut, if that's the only way I can see 100% signal strenght on
my SB... ;-)

Given that it's a cosmetic issue with a known workaround (tagging your
tracks properly with the compilation tag), I highly doubt that any work
on that issue would be targeted at a point release on the 6.3 branch.

[slim] QNAP Status Error

2006-08-08 Thread pauldesmond

Hello, for the first time in many months of error-free operation my Qnap
was has stopped working. The front status lamp is flashing red
indicating that bad blocks are found on hard disk?

Is there an easy way to fix this without having to take it apart?

Paul

How old is the home? How thick are the walls and what are they made
of?

The denser and thicker the walls, the harder it will be for radio waves
to go through them.

Wireless networking equipment is designed for modern home construction
with wood frame walls and drywall surfacing. If you have concrete
walls or older thick wood panelling with plaster overlay, your
performance will be reduced.

Hmm. Yeah, I think it's safe to say you have no outside interference.

Regarding the cordless phone, the 2.4 GHz models can and do impact
wireless performance. Remember, a PC isn't doing what a Squeezebox is
doing. A PC will hit the Internet for some data, then pause, then hit
it again, then pause. Even LAN performance is much the same.
Buffering and the inevitable pauses take care of any wireless
shortcomings.

With SlimServer/Squeezebox you need a constant stream, which can be
very high bandwidth if you're using lossless formats. The SB3 buffer
does what it can but you will notice any shortcomings very quickly.

Regarding what laptops report in terms of signal strength, keep in mind
they use different performance criteria, different methods of
measurement and a different OS. I find they're usually
overly-optimistic.

Thanks for the network test report. It's telling us your server is
fine, it's the wireless connection that's the problem. A signal
strength of 40-50% is so-so, but a buffer fullness of less than 10%,
100% of the time is unworkable.

So some suggestions:

- is this network report with a cordless phone active? If not, does it
get even worse with the phone active?

- you indicate your phone line isn't long enough to relocate the AP to
a higher location. Do you have a longer phone cord? Is the AP near
your computer desk? Could you put the AP on the top shelf?

- try changing wireless channels to 1 or 11, 13 for the UK. You
indicate you have a laptop, install NetStumbler and graph signal
strength as you change channels. You'll find some channels better than
others.

- does the AP have antennas you can reorient? Radio waves will
propagate horizontally from the antennas, so if your Squeezebox is on
the same level, keep the antennas vertical. If your Squeezebox is on
another level, reorient one or both antennas horizontally. Experiment
with various angles of each antenna and graph the signal strength with
NetStumbler. I find it's easiest to "punctuate" the graph by grasping
onto the antenna with your hand for a second or two just before you
make a change. This will drop the strength down quite a bit and make a
gap in your graph which makes it easy to spot before-and-after
differences.

[slim] Re: Signal Strenght

2006-08-08 Thread gian

following Mark suggestion, here is the report:
192.168.1.5

Please queue up several tracks to play on this player and start them
playing. Then press the Reset Counters link above to clear the
statistics and update this display.
Summary

Control Connection : OK
Streaming Connection : OK
Player Signal Strength : Poor
Buffer Fullness: Low
Server Response Time : OK

Warnings

The signal strength received by this player is poor for significant
periods, please check your wireless network.

The playback buffer for this player is occasionally falling lower than
ideal. This is a Squeezebox2 and so the buffer fullness is expected to
drop at the end of each track. You may see this warning if you are
playing lots of short tracks. If you are hearing audio dropouts, please
check our network signal strength.
Player Performance : 192.168.1.5

The graphs shown here record the long term trend for each of the player
performance measurements below. They display the number and percentage
of measurements which fall within each measurement band.

It is imporant to leave the player playing for a while and then assess
the graphs.

Player Signal Strength
This graph shows the strength of the wireless signal received by your
player. Higher signal strength is better. The player reports signal
strength while it is playing.

avg : 35.718954

Buffer Fullness
This graph shows the fill of the player's buffer. Higher buffer
fullness is better. Note the buffer is only filled while the player is
playing tracks.

Squeezebox1 uses a small buffer and it is expected to stay full while
playing. If this value drops to 0 it will result in audio dropouts.
This is likely to be due to network problems.

Squeezebox2 uses a large buffer. This drains to 0 at the end of each
track and then refills for the next track. You should only be concerned
if the buffer fill is not high for the majority of the time a track is
playing.

Playing remote streams can lead to low buffer fill as the player needs
to wait for data from the remote server. This is not a cause for
concern.

Server Performance
The graphs shown here record the long term trend for each of the server
performance measurements below. They display the number and percentage
of measurements which fall within each measurement band.
Server Response Time
This graph shows the length of time between slimserver responding to
requests from any player. It is measured in seconds. Lower numbers are
better. If you notice response times of over 1 second this could lead
to problems with audio performance.

The cause of long response times could be either other programs running
on the server or slimserver processing a complex task.

Timer Accuracy
Slimserver uses a timer mechanism to trigger events such as updating
the user interface. This graph shows how accurately each timer task is
run relative to the time it was intended to be run. It is measured in
seconds.

Timer tasks are scheduled by the server to run at some point in the
future. As only one timer task can run at once and the server may also
be performing other activity, timer tasks always run slightly after the
time they are scheduled for. However if timer tasks run significantly
after they are scheduled this can become noticable through delay in the
user interface.

I've periodically had a few problems with this kind of thing. It always
seems to appear when I put a bit of 'stress' on my network, usually via
the Qnap. Things like copying large amounts of data across the network,
notably from and to external drives, or opening and editing large image
files on the Qnap. As others have said, rebooting everything seems to
cure it.

Might want to consider a high-gain antenna.

Kind of a head-scratcher that one would be required though because my
SB3 works at 60-70% signal strength a floor below. Plus I have a 500
kW radio transmitter less than 1 km away.

You may have interference - do you or your neighbours have a 2.4 GHz
cordless phone? Have you checked for competing networks on the same
channel using these instructions:

(solution: change channels)

[slim] ShoutCAST problems?

2006-08-08 Thread DrNic

Hi all!
Is anyone else noticing a problem with ShoutCAST?
Either via Squeezenetwork or Slimserver I get stuttering playback -
this was never a problem previously!
I thought that it might be my new internet connection (had to go ADSL 2
- after a move, previously on cable) but after having no problem with
Pandora, radioIO, or SlimPicks I think otherwise!
Had a go at directly tuning in the stations I like via Slimserver and
again, no problems!
I'm not sure what is going on, searched the forums but no one else
seems to be experiencing these problems.
Any ideas?

Nic

PS just to clarify (!) - NO problems with pandora/radioIO or even
direct tune in!

I had this problem when i first got my TS-101. I got round it by going
into the admin interface and changing the ':6000' in the address bar
with ':9000'.

Don't know if it will solve your problem but you appear to have the
same symptoms as me. Accessing it once seemed to wake everything up.

[slim] Re: Announcement: SlimServer 6.3.0

2006-08-08 Thread finnie

Does anyone know if there is a pending release of 6.3.x or is the move
to 6.5 now ?

Currently looking for a fix to the well know various artist /
compilation listing issue that is part of 6.3.1

Thanks,

Andrew.

SB...
