Re: [slim] Squeezebox review: Laptop Logic
Great feedback, and like I stated - there is the option for regular ethernet connection. BUT, this is marketed as a "wireless streaming device" - so that's what the article is geared towards. I run high security on my laptop, router NAT, and Yoggie Pico security device - port forwarding MUST occur for me. If you are not worried about firewall settings, that's your data. Not mine. And you're right, I should restate on "lossy vs. Lossless" transfer, it's what I meant, and realize I should change that comment. No CD in the box is a welcomed addition, and completely understood relying this product makes use of an active network - you probably 99% have access to an internet connection as well to download it. It isn't bad, it was just noted. While it can process 5.1 files, it will not output 5.1 through an audio file that isn't encoded with it (as a standalone processor might). I'll make note that you need to have a 5.1 DTS reciever and 5.1 WAV + flac file to take advantage of this. Taking advantage of the slimserver network and utilizing a seperate computer in sub. for a squeezebox was awesome! I used the Asus EeePC as written here: http://www.laptoplogic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5270 -- simonsays simonsays's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15248 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42831 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Security Issues with WPA
Hi All, I used to have issues running the SB2 when I set my Netgear DG834GT router to WPA security. The SB2 would drop out every few minutes then reconnect to the router. The SB2 worked fine with WEP or no security. I've just upgraded to a Billion 7404VGP and the SB2 has the same issues. Works flawlessly on WEP security but regularly disconnects when using WPA setting. Is this a known issue or is there anything I should be looking at in my settings? Re: [slim] Should Internet radio AAC stream work?
It is transcoded into Flac. The display routines show the format of the original stream as that will reflect the actual quality. The way AAC and AAC+ is handled is a bit unusual but it enabled the Song titles to be displayed. There is little point in saying a 64kbps AAC+ stream is a Flac stream - the quality will not be there and the user may then complain that the Flac stream is not working well. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43790 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Audioengine 5
I am interested in either the A2 or the A5 and I took the opportunity to listen to them in a shop today. The A2 speakers are tiny, no bigger than most computer speakers. BUT - I didn't find they sounded particularly bad compared to the A5. They sounded a little "boxy" and constrained compared to the A5, but not bad. Certainly loud enough, certainly enough bass - I found they were bassier than the A5. You definitely don't need a sub with these things. Now of course the A5 sounds "effortless". I did find their input level trip point a little high, I had to really crank the input volume to get them to turn on. This would mean the Squeezebox alarm fade-in wouldn't work, it would only kick in when the volume reached near maximum so it would start late. On the other hand, there was a bunch of stuff on the A5 that I'd be paying for but couldn't use - USB charging jack, secondary inputs, 120 VAC power outlet. And that bright blue LED would be distracting in a dark bedroom. I found the A2 finish better than the A5, a glossy piano black, very smooth, much like the SB3 black plastic and the remote plastic. The A5s looked cheaper actually, a matte plastic, some fit and finish blemishes and not the nice finish the A2 comes in. The back panels on each are very impressive, quite solid and with a considerable amount of connection options. The two speakers are connected together with conventional speaker wire, meaning you could use a custom length. The A2 has a metal volume knob on the back, the A5 a plastic volume knob on the front which feels cheap. Obviously I'm leaning towards the A2. I could be very happy with that sound actually. The A5 sounded better - but with a couple of caveats. I may not be able to justify the price difference between the A2 and the A5. -- Mark Lanctot Ben Klass: "I won't even eat a pre-7.0 meal. As your library grows it is vitally important to have a single tagging format. If you download much music you'll find a variety of tagging. Are you using cover art? As a separate filed cover.jpg or is it embedded? If you have BOTH of these then you can end up with duplicate entries. I use MP3tag to tag my files. Re: [slim] Remote Control Feature Request
OK I just did this on SC7: 1. Check my favorites list is empty. 2. Go to an album and hit add to favorites 3. Repeat for another album 4. Check the favorites list - I now have 2 defined 5. Press and hold 1 on the remote - the first favorite starts playing. 6. Press and hold 2 on the remote - the second favorite starts playing. This is default, out of the box, SC7 functionality. I can't comment on how that differs from SN as I don't use it. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43701 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Remote Control Feature Request
I see now! If I press Favorite and then the number buttons in beta SN this works as you state. However if I press and hold a numeric button [again in beta SN] it says Favorite #X NOT DEFINED. How do you define it? My primary reason is for wanting to program a universal remote so I can program a press of number 2 for example to play a particular favorite. I think the way most people instinctively use remotes is they get very quick and want to do it without having to look at the squeezebox display. If you know your favorite at number 1 will take you right to your favorite that you want to hear, then you shouldn't have to scroll and press the minimum number of buttons possible. -- chale2 chale2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10046 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43701 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I am using the beta of SN/SC and was trying to also help debug > if there is an issue. > > Hope I am clearer here. Well, I only use the SN portion of my SB3 (no computer streaming) so there may be differences in this remote usage between SC & SN. However, I believe it works as follows: You press "favorites" on remote, then pressing a number on the remote is ALPHA. So if you wanted your favorite station "jazz.fm" you would press the number 5 button (5 = J-K-L). When you reach the favorite you want you must press "play". The number buttons are basically search shortcut buttons, not "play" buttons. After J-K-L it will look for anything with a 5 (numeric). The problem with this is that (currently) your SN favorites are arranged in the order in which you selected them as favorites, not alphabetically. You can move them around via the SN web interface to be alpha if you choose. I "edited" the station name of all of my favorites adding a genre for easier searching & categorizing, then organized them by that genre them. Ex: 181.fm Smooth Jazz became Jazz 181.fm Smooth Jazz This way all of my "genres" are alphabetical and searching is easier, I just press 5 for J (jazz). SN is supposed to be adding editable/customizable "sub favorites" categories for our use so we can organize our favorites in say 10 separate folders as we see fit. For me making 10 different "genre" folders would make a LOT of sense and is long overdue. But this is just a future plan for SN, not available now even in beta. Hope this helps.:) -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43701 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

No where can I find in the instructions it stated that holding button 2 on the remote will play #2 in your favorites in squeezecenter for example. This is what I want explained. 2) Does this differ based on whether you are logged into squeezenetwork versus squeezecenter [slimserver]? However use the proper URL and not the playlist file http://scfire-nyk-aa01.stream.aol.com:80/stream/1049 The name of songs will appear on the display but because the display routine is not aware of the transcoding, the titles are excessively delayed - with slow speed (64K) AAC+ streams the delay can be 5 minutes ! Re: [slim] Double Listings in "Albums"
A common problem I'm afraid. A search of the forum would probably turn up a few related threads. This will undoubtably be a tag issue. iTunes is a bit sneaky and adds its own tags - particularly inserting Disc number tags on compilation albums. I would recommend examining the tags carefully in a program such as MP3Tag - and delete all itunes comments, and disc number (unless you want that!) Also ensure you don't have multiple versions of ID3 tags. Once you are sure you have clean tags then do a rescan of the library. Of course if you must use itunes as your library manager you may have to stop it re-writting the tags. Re: [slim] Range of selectable volume
Sorry to raise an old thread, but it seems a relevant starting point. I am using SqueezeCenter 7 and two Squeezebox 1s (firmware 40) with the 0-100 volume control. However, the relationship between the volume setting and perceived volume output seems all wrong to me: (a) not much happens as you drop from 100>40, output drops from 0 to -10dB (b) reasonable control between 40>10, output drops from -10dB to -25dB (c) far too coarse control between 10>0, output drops from -25dB to -50dB I have measure the output and plotted this in the attachment, where the (linear) volume control setting from 0-100 is shown against the (log) audio level output from 0 to -50dB - see "Actual Respose" line. You can see that, whereas it should be a straight line relationship in this lin/log chart, it is actually a curve, indicating the volume control drives the control voltage of the voltage-controlled gain section linearly, whereas it should be driven logarithmically. I would suggest that (as shown by the "Preferred Response?" line) the output should drop by 0.5dB for each volume step - linearly throughout the range. Is there a plug-in to fix this, or would a software update be needed? Having only 100 values, a simple look-up table would suffice, surely? Any volunteers?
