Re: [slim] Re: Looks like Apple are joining the party
CardinalFang wrote: That was my point, the SB3 will look very poor value next to this new Apple device, so it was a smart move for Slim to go more audiophile. At first glance, the Apple prototype iTV doesn't appear to be of much in the way of competition to the Squeezebox. All they share is the ability to transport music from a computer to a receiver/stereo/entertainment center. The iTV is a general purpose device designed to work in conjunction with a video display. The SB3 is primarily a device to bring high quality music to you, with no reliance on a video display other than its built-in VFD. In terms of value, the iTV has video output hardware, the SB3 adds a built-in high resolution VFD. I suspect that the components of the SB3 are probably more expensive. The iTV seems to be a marriage of Apple's old Airport Express product + video. It's about as competitive with the SB3 as the stereo out on the Airport Express was, though the iTV improves on Airport Express by requiring you to use your TV to listen to music, probably located near your stereo, rather than iTunes, probably not located near your stereo. The new Apple player will make a big dent in Sonos sales I would imagine. I would buy one for my kids to use and if that's a digital out on the back, it might sound pretty decent through a DAC. I agree. It does appear to have an optical digital out: http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2006/09/dsc_0999.jpg A lot could change between now and product release, of course. shabbs wrote: If you have an XBOX, a modded XBOX can achieve all of this for you for a pretty low cost. The XBOX isn't silent, and while the aesthetics are in the eye of the beholder (I think it's fugly, whereas my roommate thought it looked pretty cool), doesn't bear much similarity to most consumer AV gear. Perhaps a slim AV style Mini-ITX enclosure with DC-DC power supply, network booted from a remote server? That would be an essentially silent solution in an unobtrusive case. It doesn't really have the simplicity and ease of use of a Squeezebox for photos, though. It's also expensive, by the time you add up the various components. I imagine that the photos would be displayed on a TV? Some models of TVs now include flash card slots for displaying photos; that would require no additional hardware, and would also be silent. Of course, that's a pretty big investment, especially if you have a TV you're happy with already. There are also a lot of standalone little devices like this: http://www.inkjetcartridge.com/datvphshcofl.html (Caveat Emptor -- above link found through Google, no idea if they're reputable or not). For $15, you get a standalone flash card reader with video out. I suspect the quality matches the low price point, but it may be adequate for your purposes? [slim] Seattle Event - Thanks Patrick and Seattle Sunglasses!
Hello, I was the first customer at the Seattle Event, having simultaneously braved snow, sleet, and rain to get there (well, the event -was- all of four blocks from my workplace, so I'm not expecting the Medal of Valor or anything like that...). I appreciated the non-salesy and knowledgeable demonstration, the product sold itself, and yes, I am still wondering whether I should have gone for the courtesy SB 2 in platinum rather than black (being a current owner of a black SB 1G)! I was also happily surprised to see the gratis SB 2 was a wireless model. For those who haven't seen the Squeezebox v3 in person, it's very elegant, and the display is easily readable from a variety of angles. It feels solid and well put together. The improvement in display quality over the Squeezebox 1G (I skipped the Squeezebox 2) is significant. Thanks again Patrick, and Darwin @ Seattle Sunglasses (nice place -- I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them either, given how friendly the ophthalmologist who co-hosted the event was). MeSue wrote: Of course powered speakers will work, but this is about being portable. If I want to use my SB2 outside, using your suggestion, I would have to carry: 1 Squeezebox 1 remote 2 speakers 2 power bricks speaker cables … and then find a power outlet with 2 plugs, connect everything, and then break it all down when I want to locations again. Not gonna happen. DIY! :) You could do something like the nice wooden case recently posted, or alternatively, purchase or re-use a milk crate or box or 5 gallon bucket or Millenium Falcon or... Crate permanently contains: 2 speakers 2 power bricks (Squeezebox one is extra ordered from Slimdevices site) 1 remote speaker cables power strip/y adapter If the power bricks and power strip are zip-tied to the side of the milk crate or kept in a false bottom (place sheet of black cardboard on top with a small hole cut for headphone and power connector) of a box, things are kept tidy. When you want to use the Squeezebox outside away from your stereo, unplug the power cable and speaker connections, and place the Squeezebox in the conveniently stored crate. Connect speakers to headphone jack, plug power cable into Squeezebox. Carry your one item (crate) outside, extract squeezebox and speakers (if desired; speakers could be embedded/attached to the box, and a window or hole could be put in for the Squeezebox display/IR), arrange as desired, plug power strip into outdoor outlet or extension cable. Presto! ;) This method is not as elegant as a all-in-one factory unit, but also keeps your Squeezebox available for use inside without sticking an ugly boombox on the shelf. [slim] Squeezebox 1G for sale.
Hello all, I'm putting my beloved Wireless Squeezebox 1G up for sale, to help fund an upgrade to a Squeezebox 2. This is functionally equivalent to the Squeezebox, but with the higher resolution graphical display upgrade. I'll put it on Craigslist and/or Ebay within a few days, but thought I'd check with the community here first! The unit is in excellent/mint condition (the factory film is still on the remote, I'm strange that way), and includes the original remote control, the original VFD display (from prior to the graphical display upgrade) in the extremely unlikely event of some future failure with the current display, and RCA cables. I'm asking $140. I believe this is fair; there is an available unit on Ebay at $112 with 3 days remaining, and one sold for $160 two days ago. I don't believe either of those units had the graphical display upgrade, which is a significant improvement over the original Squeezebox display. I would prefer to deal with someone local to the Seattle, WA area. You're more than welcome to contact me if you're outside that area, but I'll give preference to someone who can pick it up locally. I'd be happy to answer questions if you have any (off-list, of course)! Kind of makes it hard to demo, or even use, the SB2 on short notice. Any way to force a connection? I've tried repeatedly retrying to connect, but that appears to do nothing. In this situation, I typically hold down the power button on the remote (for approx 5 seconds), this causes the SB to restart. I then wait for the SB2 to automatically reconnect. The whole process takes maybe 15 seconds and involves one (long) button process. Caveat lector -- I own the SBG, I don't know if this process has changed with the SB2. This is definitely drifting into OT territory. But hey, so is 90% of the traffic on this list, so :) Asterisk works quite nicely and, in addition to home offices, small and medium sized normal businesses, is used by a number of call centers with high volume (going by posts to the Asterisk users mailing lists). It's freeware in that it's free of cost; more importantly, it's licensed under the GNU GPL, just like Slimserver. Digium, the primary sponsors of Asterisk, have a very similar business model to Slim Devices. They give away the software, and hope to sell hardware (see http://www.digium.com/). While I am not a large installation, Asterisk works great for me, and you can't beat the price if you have inhouse Linux/technical skills avilable. Feature-wise it seems very rich to me, but like I said, I can't speak to reliability for large installations. But, I suspect Jonathan Miller and most of the potential user base doesn't need to scale to 30,000 endpoints. Most PBX solutions out there are proprietary, so the wheel is re-invented by each company producing them. Asterisk has seem a lot of features contributed by third-parties who didn't have to re-invent the while, they just slapped a bit of tread on it. There are a number of cheap home routers that incorporate QoS (Quality of Service) that can sit between your DSL/cable modem and ensure that real-time traffic (like VoIP) gets the priority it needs. The reality is, though, that many home connections have a woeful lack of upstream bandwidth, and that you might be in an either or situation.
