Ellison and Dixon make the case for Bayesian to
(a) make better use of pre-existing data; (b) allow stronger
conclusions to be drawn from large-scale experiments with few 
replicates;

and (c) be more relevant to environmental  decision-making.

They clearly prefer evidence based priors (a, above).
As to environmental decision making (c), that occurs in the
policy arena, where it is up to us as scientists to make the
best case on evidence. And insists on evidence, as in medical
practice.

In my experience Bayesian analysis makes sense with a

I think Bayesian makes sense in an activity such as NEON,
National Ecological Observatory Network, where I did
Bayesian workshop in R.

The computational details require substantial
computer resources (MCMC, look it up) to "burn in" the choice
of distributional assumptions.

The differences in opinion within the Bayesian camp
can be as intense as the Fisher vs Neyman-Pearson wars
in the frequentist camp in the last century.

In the end though, the way we think, as humans, is Bayesian,
working from subjective priors.  The question is- what is the role
of Bayesian thinking in science, a public activity.

proposals for collaborative and interdisciplinary team-based research 
projects under two programs: Pursuits and Workshops.

SESYNC is a synthesis research center that brings together diverse 
groups in new, interdisciplinary collaborations to identify solutions to 
society’s most challenging and complex environmental problems. Proposals 
are invited for synthesis projects focused on tools, methods, and other 
practices applicable to actionable team research on socio-environmental 
problems.

[ECOLOG-L] Master's Assistantship in Sustainable Agriculture

Background
The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is the land-grant 
university of the Nation’s Capital. The College of Agriculture, Urban 
Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) embodies the land-
grant tradition of UDC and offers academic programs in urban 
agriculture, urban sustainability, water resources management, nutrition 
and dietetics, urban architecture and community planning.

Position Description
CAUSES seeks a Graduate Assistant to join its Professional Science 
Master’s Program in Urban Agriculture 
(https://www.udc.edu/programs/professional-science-masters-degree-psm-
in-water-and-resources-management/). The Graduate Assistant will 
evaluate the use of repurposed waste for production of specialty crops. 
Of particular interest is how green waste mulch may alter inputs 
(fertilizer, irrigation, and weed management) and outputs (yield and 
nutrient density). Research sites may include UDC’s agricultural 
experiment station, UDC’s food hubs, and partner locations in the metro 
area.

The Graduate Assistant will partner with other universities, government 
agencies, and NGOs and will contribute to community outreach. The 
Graduate Assistant will be expected to conduct research 20 hours per 
week during fall and spring semesters and 30-40 hours per week during 
summer, which carries a stipend of approximately $18,300 for 12-months 
and a reduction or complete payment of tuition.

Primary qualifications
• Undergraduate degree in agriculture, horticulture, entomology, plant 
pathology, biological sciences, ecology, or closely related field. Or, 
demonstrated work experience in these fields
• Good organizational skills, attention to detail, and a self-driven 
curiosity
• Proven ability to conduct independent research and/or maintain 
agricultural systems
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to convene and organize 
research groups, work as part of a scientific team, and relay 
information to the general public 
• Strong quantitative skills and a basic understanding of biostatistics 
are preferred
• Knowledge and/or experience growing sweet potatoes and hot peppers is 
preferred
• Physical ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions 
• A valid driver’s license is required and personal transportation is 
essential

[ECOLOG-L] Seeking Master's students in evolutionary ecology

The Eco-Evo Lab at California State University, Northridge invites
applications from undergraduates interested in pursuing a Master’s of
Science in Biology. In particular, we are seeking a M.S. student to work on
an NSF-funded project that examines the limits to strong effects of
evolution on contemporary ecological interactions. The student will help to
perform selection experiments on microcosms of protozoa consumers and their
bacterial prey that live inside of carnivorous pitcher plants. We are
examining how dispersal and gene flow may alter the evolution of protozoa
traits, and how these effects may cascade down to affect bacterial prey
diversity and community structure.



In general, research in our lab focuses on the interface between ecological
and evolutionary processes. We address how rapid evolution affects species
interactions, such as competition, predation, and mutualism. We are also
interested in how interactions among multiple species in natural
communities affect selection on traits and evolutionary trajectories.



Research in the lab encompasses a variety of study systems, including (1)
microbial communities of protists and bacteria that live inside carnivorous
pitcher plants, (2) symbiotic algae associated with coral reef organisms,
and (3) invasive plant species in California grasslands. Students are
encouraged to develop their own independent research projects. More

will serve as a mentor and role model to undergraduate students that are

*Two Postdoctoral Fellowships *(2 years each) in *Arctic ecosystems 
ecology / plant-ecophysiology / microbial ecology *are available in 
Abisko at the Climate Impacts Research Centre of the Department of 
Ecology and Environmental Science, Umeå University, north Sweden, to 
study the *off-seasonal dynamics of plant and soil microbial 
processes in arctic ecosystems*. Climate change in the Arctic is 
especially pronounced during autumn, winter and spring, including 
increases in temperature, changes in snow fall/cover and rain-on-snow 
events. Such off-seasonal changes in climate can affect the carbon 
balance of arctic ecosystems and the underlying plant and soil microbial 
processes but the extent remains unclear. We are looking for two 
postdoctoral fellows to to investigate how changes in the timing, 
frequency and extent of winter freezing conditions, as well as the 
timing of spring and autumn, affects the (off-)seasonal dynamics of

The Graduate Program in Ecology and Evolution
at Stony Brook University
 is recruiting doctoral and
master's level graduate students for Fall 2019.

The department has a long and distinguished history, being one of the first
of its kind.  It currently has a productive and diverse faculty working on
broad array of questions involving microbes, plants, vertebrate and
invertebrate animals and whole ecosystems. Field locales span the globe
from the old and new world tropics to the Arctic and Antarctic polar
regions, as well as the uplands, wetlands and coastal areas of Long Island
and nearby New York City.

Upon admission, PhD students are guaranteed teaching assistantships upon
acceptance, with additional support available through fellowships and
