Assistant or Associate Professor in Spatial Science of Coupled Natural-Human Systems School for Environment and Sustainability University of Michigan, Ann Arbor The School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) at the University of Michigan is seeking applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Spatial Science of Coupled Natural-Human Systems. We seek applicants whose work advances the frontiers of knowledge in natural-human system processes and relationships at diverse scales using theories, methods, and tools of spatial science. Topical areas of interest are broad. These could include human dimensions of global change as they relate to biodiversity loss, land-cover/land-use change, urbanization, climate change, ecosystem services and valuation, material and energy flows, and environmental degradation, among others. Candidates need to have strong capabilities in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and/or other forms of spatial science, and to incorporate this as an integral core of their work. Candidates must have a Ph.D., and we are interested in candidates from a broad range of disciplines, including geography, anthropology, ecology, hydrology, environmental science, computational or data science, engineering, public health, social sciences, or related fields. We are also interested in candidates who may be combining disciplines in interesting or novel ways. The complexity of the meanings of sustainable development have meant that many scholars, researchers, decision makers, and practitioners see in it diverse ways in which to aspire for and achieve societal goals. Scholarly research, student training, and new opportunities for meaningful change continue to increase, especially with the United Nations-sponsored Sustainable Development Goals finding traction with governments and NGOs alike. The University of Michigan announces one post-doctoral research opportunity, beginning August 2018 and focusing on urban GIS broadly-conceived. The successful applicant will work on Food Systems. This includes two projects: 1) The food-energy-water nexus of urban agriculture across multiple scales; and 2) urban meat production-consumption patterns and dynamics. Collaborating with a team of faculty, postdocs, and students, research will be conducted in cities in Europe (France, Germany, the U.K, and Poland) and the U.S. (New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit). The postdoctoral researcher will be work in the Urban Sustainability Research Group (http://urbansustainability.snre.umich.edu/), mentored by Joshua Newell (Associate Professor). Qualifications: A PhD is required at the time of appointment. Candidates must have a PhD in one or more disciplines broadly associated with Land System Science (e.g., geography, natural resource economics, sociology, political ecology, remote sensing, landscape architecture). Proficiency with the management and analysis of geospatial data in geographical information systems (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.) and experience with acquiring, managing, and harmonizing heterogeneous data types are required. Preference will be given to applicants with publication experience and programming experience in R, Python and/or Google Earth Engine. Experience processing, analyzing and displaying ‘big data’ is a plus. The ability to apply this expertise and tools in an urban context is highly desirable. School for Environment and Sustainability University of Michigan, Ann Arbor The new School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) at the University of Michigan is seeking applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track open rank faculty position in the field of Data Science for Sustainable Development. We seek candidates whose work focuses on: (i) addressing key development challenges and questions around sustainable development goals, policies, interventions and social processes, and their impact on sustainability outcomes, (ii) using cutting edge analytical tools to generate new understanding of the processes leading to sustainability transitions. The successful candidates research will investigate sustainability and development through an examination of issues related but not limited to health / poverty / environment / resources / infrastructure/ and/or renewable energy. Candidates will have the ability to develop new data platforms and applications that enhance the visibility of SEAS as the place to conduct such research and to be trained in this field, and (iii) combining an interest in data science, broadly defined and including statistical, econometric, spatial, simulation (e.g. ABM), and/or network analyses with the ability to train SEAS students for careers in the sustainable development field by offering courses in data science and causal inference applied to sustainable development-related subjects. The Jain Lab (http://mehajain.weebly.com) at University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability (http://seas.umich.edu/) is recruiting Ph.D. students to start Fall 2018. Our lab examines questions related to sustainable food systems in the face of global environmental change, including climate change and natural resource degradation. Specifically, I am interested in students who would like to (1) quantify the impacts of environmental change on agricultural production and examine sustainable ways to enhance food security, (2) identify how farmers are adapting to environmental change and the effectiveness of these adaptation strategies, and/or (3) identify and implement interventions to enhance farmers’ abilities to sustainably adapt to environmental change. We use a mixed methods approach to answer these questions, combining satellite image analysis and household surveys to understand farmer decision-making across large spatio- temporal scales. Though the lab would be best suited to students who would like to similarly combine these methods, this is not required and students who are interested in either satellite image or household survey analysis are also encouraged to apply.
