When Mr Collins himself was in control, iirc, the rumor in th '50s was that
the 'A4 cost about four large to manufacture, while, as a favor to fellow
hams, he let them steal it for ~$750. The beancounters eventually reined
him in.

Re: [Elecraft] Price Comparisons

2011-06-14 Thread Lew Phelps K6LMP
Using the Consumer Price Index as an adjustment mechanism, prices have risen by
360% between 1977 and 2011. That is, to buy something worth $100 in 1977, you'd
have to pay $360 today. Another inflation adjustment mechanism that most
economists consider more useful is the Gross Domestic Product Deflator. It
shows a slightly lower rate of inflation -- mere $293 in 2011 equivalent to
$100 in 1977. Inversely, $1.00 in 1977 is the same as 27.7 cents today.

You can run any CPI or GDP calculation at http://www.measuringworth.com/. It
will calculate inflation between any two years (US Currency) from 1774 to the
present.

In the following table, I have converted the prices quoted by Fred Jensen into
equivalent current prices using the GDP Deflator. The prices are
mind-boggling. What this shows is that amateur radio equipment is a MUCH
better value today than it was in 1977. Can you imagine paying #25K for a
linear amplifier? Or $16K for a transceiver?

For rough comparison purposes, a fully loaded factory-assembled K3
(subreceiver, 100 watt internal amp, ATU, 2 meter transceiver, P3 panadapter,
full set of 8-pole filters, etc -- the works) would cost about $8,000, or
almost exactly half the cost of a KWM2A. And yet it has vastly better
capability than the Collins rig. If you compare to the value of any other
manufacturers' rigs, YMMV. Thank you, Eric and Wayne!
-

Equipment COLLINS PART NO. LIST PRICE
EQUIVALENT 2011 PRICE
KWM2A TRANCVR 522-1792-000 $3533.00
$12,718
KWM2A TRANS W/BLKR 522-1792-011 4427.00

75S3C RECVR 522-3317-000 3000.00

$25,376
30L1 LINEAR AMP522-2375-000 1689.00
$ 6,080

With respect to Jimmy Carter's presidency, which someone mentioned in an
earlier post, overall inflation during his term in office was about 40%, or 9%
compounded annually. That is, $1.00 at the beginning of his term was worth 71
cents when Reagan took office. By comparison, inflation in the following four
years, the first Reagan term, was 18%, and 37% for Reagan's eight years in
office, or about 4% per year compounded.

[Elecraft] Can I use Two Headsets Simultaneously on the K3?

2011-06-14 Thread Paul Levin
Gentlemen,

My XYL and I are planning to operate together in some up coming contests and on
Field Day. She has a Heil headset which would be hooked up to the K3 via the
front headphone jack and the 8-pin mic connector. I have a set of Yamaha CM-500
which I'd like to connect to the K3 via the back connections. Transmit would be
controlled by VOX. Can this be done? What menu settings would I need to set to
hear through both? Would only one set be allowable to be hooked up to input at
a time? (Only one person will be transmitting at a time while the other is
logging.) Your thoughts and recommendations please.

Thanks

[Elecraft] Are K3 serial numbers sequential?

2011-06-14 Thread KD3RF
It would be nice to someday see a listing of serial numbers on the Elecraft
website indicating the year that a piece of equipment was shipped from the
factory for some of the major items: K1, KX1, K2, K3, KPA500...

No rush of course. Far more important to get orders out the door than to
make lists (hi hi).

Simple list of ranges would do it:

S/N 1 - S/N 00998 2008

S/N 00998 - S/N 01998 2009

etc... etc...

[Elecraft] KPA500 question

2011-06-14 Thread Dave Perry
My KPA500 sn 70 arrived tonight (factory assembled). It took just a few
minutes to hook up and get it on the air. I am using the Y cable on the ACC
port to split off two cables from the K3 ACC port -- one goes to a new RCS-12
Automatic Antenna Switch and the other goes to the KPA500.

I have AUX BUS on the KPA500 menu turned on and Band Change set to normal. If
I press a band button on the amp, the K3 changes bands and so does the new
antenna switch -- pretty neat. But the band display on the KPA does not
change. I have to hit the key and transmit to get the band to change on the
KPA500. This does not seem correct. It would seem that pressing any on the
band buttons on the amp should change the band on the amp and the frequency
display as well.

Likewise if I change bands on the K3 or via my logging software, the K3 and
antenna switch change bands, but the KPA500 does not. I have to tap the paddle
and transmit to get the KPA500 to change to the correct band. I am wondering
if there is a problem with the Aux Cable. Any other suggestions?

I am up to date on firmware for both the K3 and KPA500.

The amp runs very quiet and is silky smooth in full QSK mode. I just need to
get the band changing issue resolved. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Still waiting for my KPA-500 kit, so just a guess do you have
CONFIG:KIO3 in your K3 set to TRN, by any chance? It probably needs
to be nor, or maybe HF-TRN, to feed the KPA-500 properly (see page
19 of the K3 Owner's Manual).

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 question

2011-06-14 Thread Dave Perry
Gary,

Good suggestion. I removed the cable going to the antenna switch and now the
K3 and KPA500 appear to talk to one another when changing bands. Pushing a
band button on the amp changes the amp and the K3 to the new band. I still
cannot get the two power levels to work. I also need to figure out how to get
the band switch working with the Y cable.

What bothers me is the amp was not switching bands you said?...If the OPER
switch is set then the aux cable should allow you to switch bands either way
and the amp should indeed switch bands and indicate that on the LCD.

Unfortunately, my FT unit has the original I/O board so I can't verify this
for you...sorry

remove the antenna switch and try see if that makes any difference.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 question

2011-06-14 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

You might try isolation diodes between the antenna switch and/or
KPA and the K3. If the KPA is not band switching with the RCS-12
connected, I would suspect the RCS-12 is loading the band data
lines.

How are you connecting the RCS-12? Are you using the Yaesu BCD
connections?
