[Elecraft] Dummy Load Recommendation
The previously described RFL-100 $50 resistor dummy load kit (also available pre-built) is perfect. With a very nice cabinet, choice of UHF connectors, and very nice price. For those who experiment with very small RF Termination Resistor devices, the microwave company Anaren, Inc., of East Syracuse, NY now manufactures (overseas) a tiny 450-watt RF termination device that measures roughly 1-inch x 1/2-inch. DC-through 1.7-GHz. $24.00 from Mouser.com. Model # G450N50W4. AiN device, 50-Ohms +/-2%. Two flange holes for mounting on heat sink. See spec sheet for temperature limits. Even at 100-watts dissipation you'll need a good heat sink and cooling fan; likewise when wiring up four. Andy: In answer to your two questions: The TI PCM2901, I am told by a Watsonville rep, was used in the K3-S. Whether it was used in early production runs, or used in later production runs, I do not know. It comes in two versions: Model E and Model EG4. [Elecraft] KPA1500 Command Macro PF1 PF2 Buttons for fast Fan Control
These two front panel PF1 PF2 button macros have served me well for quick access & control of fan speed. They're not perfect, but they're still quite a time-saver from having to look over at the amp and scroll through the main MENU items to find FAN, and then make the selection to EDIT, and then make the selection of speed change. If the op is unfamiliar with programming PF1 and PF2, please see the notes below. Macro For PF1 :^BPT11;^FS;^FC1;^BPH11; Macro For PF2 :^FC0;^BPT03; If desired, a first long press of PF1 triggers Fan Speed 01 and leaves the LCD screen fixed in the FAN SPEED window. If desired, a second long press of PF1 triggers the Fan Speed EDIT function to allow fast or slow changes in fan speed. If desired, pressing PF2 turns the fan off and returns the LCD screen to regular amp STATUS window. Note-1: The amp's firmware will (supposedly) provide necessary fan overrides when heat conditions require such. Note-2: Amp Firmware used was v.02.17 Note-3: I was unable to configure a single PF macro button to toggle between FC1 and FC0. [Elecraft] K3: The Audio pop noise when K3 rig is turned ON. Solution?
In the older K3 rigs: What was the old 'solution' to eliminate the initial audio 'pop' when the K3 is turned 'ON' ?? Background: Back in 2009-2010 there was a short list-serve exchange on the topic of the audio 'pop' noise heard when some of the K3 rigs were initially turned on. The noise was described as a simultaneous "double pop" of medium volume heard in the speaker and lasting only a split second, with practically no spacing between the two. Heard in the speaker regardless of the volume control setting. A noise similar to the radio noise of two far-away lightning strikes. Searching those old 2010 exchanges did not turn up a 'solution'. Likewise with the Elecraft site. With that, then, it's easy to 'assume' there is no real issue with the noises, no harm to be expected, no real problem here, let the rig greet the op and say 'hello' in its own way, and let it be. But with masterful electronics, I don't like to assume anything. Did the pops disappear with later production units. Peter, Check out the high amperage 13,8 volt power supplies offered by Samlex America at the following link, and in particular their 100-amp -plus (continuous) supplies where the fans do not activate for low draws. You had mentioned something about price not being so important. [Elecraft] K3 MACRO'ites please weigh in: Using TUNE while deactivating the KPA500 Amplifier
There's a K3 MACRO hiding somewhere that will, upon pressing of TUNE, activate the tune function and simultaneously de-activate the KPA500 amp; and afterwards, by tapping TUNE, will re-instate the KPA500 amp to its original state before TUNE was pressed. Any ideas on this will be welcome : ) The above relates only to the KPA500 using the recommended K3 connecting cables. Hi, Gerard, Setting up the KAT500 without a KPA amp is, indeed, quite workable. Some details on this are found on Page-11 of the KAT500 downloadable manual, found at the link below. That page, and others, reflect the units versatility, its offering of three front-panel controlled SO-239 Output jacks, optional computer control, connectivity to other brand transceivers and other brand amplifiers, and its capability of handling higher power, up to 1,000 Watts. Also suggested for reading is the information on Page-3 in the manual, regarding cabling. As always, Elecraft customer service support will be there for you with answers and suggestions, even before ownership of the unit, and should you ever need them. Good DX, .
