[Elecraft] 160 and 80 meter KX-1

2005-02-19 Thread Frederick Dwight
To: Paul W8KC
RE: KX-1 operation on 160 and 80 meters
I saw your post about wanting a 160/80 meter KX-1. At first glance it seems
that a 2 band KX-1 with antenna tuner option could be modified as it is being
built to operate on 80 and 160 meters. Since no 30 meter board would be
installed there would probably
be room for the few additional parts required. Briefly, the pin 19 output of
U2 could be routed to a new NE-602 mixer with a
5.2 mhz oscillator crystal to reduce the pin 19 frequency by 5.2 MHZ. (The
display would read 7.0 mhz when you are on
1.8 mhz). The output of the added mixer would feed both Q4 and U6. If a 10.5
mhz crystal is selected, the display would
read 14.0 mhz when you are operating on 3.5 mhz. Please be sure to investigate
spurious mixer products before ordering
crystals, the above mixer scheme may not be the best. All capacitors and
inductors in tuned circuits would need to be approximately 4 times the value
used in the un-modified KX-1. Some bypass and coupling capacitors may need to
be changed. Also stage gain might need re-adjustment. Since the KX-1 processor
operates on 3.995 mhz, operation on the upper part, and possibly all of 75
meters may not be possible. Also urban folks may need to consider a highpass
filter in the receive input to reduce strong AM broadcast stations. Probably
the inductors and capacitors in the antenna tuner could be scaled up by a
factor of 4
to let you operate with a 100 ft wire and a 64 ft counterpoise. You might use
either a latching relay or the led lamp switch as a crystal bandswitch.
These are just some un-tried ideasthey are NOT exact designs. This would
be a fun project for someone with moderate design and building skills. I can
GUARANTEE that your radio would not play when you first turn it on. You would
need to do some engineering and experimentation to get it right.

[Elecraft] Ultimatic keying ...

2005-02-19 Thread JACrux
A very long time ago I suggested to Elecraft that an Ultimatic option would
be nice, and anyway the iambic mode is a dogs' breakfast to actually use.
Iambic keying only exists because of designer laziness; it was the easy way
out with flip flop circuitry.
The last discrete device Ultimatic-style keyer published in QST was the
Versakeyer, and that was back in May 1979. It has an iambic option (never
used it) and an auto-space option (OK, but really makes you work on your
timing.) The original 1950s Ultimatic keyer used a heap of relays (ugh)
although the 11 tube version used only one.  I still have my tube Ultimatic;
component ageing has stopped it working but one day I'll fix it ..
So I use my 1979 Versakeyer most of the time. It will key anything up to plus
or minus 300v and is RF proof. But being lazy I never got round to adding the
external keyer diodes to my K2, so I just swap between paddles and
re-programme brain when going from Omni-V to K2 and back again. But having
been obliged by my own laziness to use both modes, often in rapid succession,
I have not the slightest doubt that the Ultimatic mode wins fist down on ease
of use and convenience.
Now if only I could motivate myself to shoe horn a K1EL (12 series) chip into
my K2 .
Yes, the magic HEXKEY is only hooked to the Versakeyer and not to the K2 ...
shame on me, I know !
John G3JAG (try sending that in iambic mode)

Re: [Elecraft] Ultimatic Keying.

2005-02-19 Thread Dan KB6NU
The difference between iambic and Ultimatic keying is that when you hold
down both paddles, the Ultimatic keyer sends a series of elements
corresponding to the last paddle closed instead of sending alternate dits
and dashes as an iambic keyer would. For example, the sequence L on, R on
would cause an iambic keyer to send di-dah-di-dah. An Ultimatic keyer
would, however, send di-dah-dah-dah.

If you count the number of paddle movements, you can see where this might be
advantageous. There's no advantage when sending a K. The sequence is R on, L
on, L off, R off for both iambic and Ultimatic keyers. Take X, however. When
using iambic keying, it's R on, R off, L on, L off, R on, R off. With
Ultimatic keying, the number of paddle movements is the same as for the
iambic - R on, L on, L off, R off. - a savings of two paddle movements. You
just hold down the left paddle a little longer for the X then for the K.

Another keyer that now supports Ultimatic keying is the N0XAS PicoKeyer
(www.hamgadgets.com). It's only $18, and fits in a mini Altoids tin. I have
no affiliation with the company; I just think it's a cool little keyer.

[Elecraft] Mastering Iambic Keying

2005-02-19 Thread MercerDent
An excellent primer to iambic keying titled The Iambic Gambit by AA5Q ended
by frustration with iambic keying. The article appeared on page 52, July
1981 QST.

This article allowed me to master the iambic keyer at our local ham club
station and I quickly bought a keyer for the home station. There are only 7
characters to master - C, F, K, L, Q, R and Y.

It took only about an hour of practice and I have been squeezing ever
since. Try it - you might like it!

Re: [Elecraft] Ultimatic Keying.

2005-02-19 Thread John Pfeifer
Another solution for getting Ultimatic keying inside a K2 would be the PK4
keyer from Jackson Harbor Press. It's very small, only 1 x 1.5. Jackson
Harbor's contest keyer, the Island Keyer II, also supports Ultimatic. Both of
these keyers are available directly from Jackson Harbor Press at:

  http://home.att.net/~jacksonharbor/ham.htm

or from Morse Express at:

  http://www.mtechnologies.com/jhp/

Jackson Harbor also has an explanation of Ultimatic keying at:

  http://home.att.net/~jacksonharbor/ultimat.txt

I haven't tried either one of these keyers, but I do have the older PK3 (inside
my Palm Radio Code Cube) and like it. Unfortunately, it doesn't do Ultimatic.

RE: [Elecraft] What cable with RASCAL PSK interface

2005-02-19 Thread designer

Mike,

I bought the K2 used and it came with an Heil hand mike.

While reviewing the BUXCOMM site for other options, I saw they had a
cable for SCG and Ten Tec gear but not Elecraft. I now understand
that's probably because there are various ways to configure the mic
connector and Elecraft has yet to come out with a revised back panel
that supports digital modes in a more friendly fashion (line a Din 5
plug with line level IN/OUT and PTT).

I saw I could buy a switch box and use my one RASCAL I use with a Ten
Tec rig, and just purchase the required cable to the switch box for
each rig I want to use.

Thank you and 73,
Paul.

What type of case would be recommended? Should metal be used for shielding or

RE: [Elecraft] Enclosure for BL1?

2005-02-19 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Darrell,

Either a plastic or metal enclosure would work just fine - no need for
shielding (a balun should be self shielding), and there should be little if
any effects from metal at a reasonable distance (1/2 inch or so) from the
wires.

If it were my choice, I would prefer plastic since it is easier to work for
most folks, and the terminals are self insulating.

Size the enclosure so that the balun will comfortably fit inside.

[Elecraft] Wireless Mouse Wish List

2005-02-19 Thread paulrubin
Hello fellow Elecrafters:

Here’s an idea that I've been thinking about for a while, but don't have the
technical expertise to implement.

I would like to build a wireless paddle. I've noticed that Microsoft and Compaq
have both recently come out with small wireless mice for laptops. They cost
$25. The receivers plug into the laptops via a USB port.

Does anyone have any idea how one could build a circuit with cannibalized parts
from one of these assemblies to use the left and right mouse buttons for the
paddle, and interface the USB receiver for keying?

I opened up a Logitech desktop wireless mouse, but the parts were all over the
place, and it was pretty large. Of course, the smaller the better for both the
transmitter and receiver. Sounds like a great SMD project. Any interest Tom?

Also, how about something like a Bluetooth connected headset? You can have two
versions, earphones only for the K1, KX1, and microphone for the K2.

Just some ideas that I’m throwing out for minds greater than mine.

Thanks,

[Elecraft] Portable solar power solution

2005-02-19 Thread Jean-François Ménard

Hi,

I bought yesterday 2 solar flexible power panel form ICP Global
Technologies... 1 of 5W and 1 of 20W both give me 13.8V with 1.5 A
of power at full sun, but they are also very efficient on cloudy day.
These power panel was first developped for military uses.

See their web site...

http://www.icpsolar.com/ssfamille.php3?id_rubrique=11#specifications

I used the 2 external BNC connectors that I did not use for my
transverter, because I used the BNC connectors instead. One BNC for
positive (only the tip of the BNC not the shield) and the other BNC tip
connector as the negative side. They are connected on the + and -
batterie terminals inside the K2

When I am operating with the internal batterie KBT... (WARNING: must
not be used at the same time when operating with the external DC
connector of the K2 !!! ) I use a charge controller from ICP Global
Technologies, made for solar panel... Keep the power from the solar
panel at a maximum of 14.2V DC and at a minimum of 13V DC. Below 13V
the charger controller automatically stop feeding the batterie in the
K2...

A safe and smart way to continously charge the internal batterie when
you are on the road

I have no photo for now, but a few are coming later this weeks

[Elecraft] EPA QRP Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event 2/22

2005-02-19 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

The EPA QRP Club will hold our first Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event
on February 22, 2005. We call this event the Polar Bear Moonlight
Madness Event because only polar bears would operate in the freezing
cold top of a mountain in February. Moonlight because we will hike,
drive and operate by the Full Snow Moon in February. Madness because
only mad-men would do this sort of thing. Yes we are all crazy, but it's
a FUN Crazy! To date we have four Polar Bear Ops for the event. One or
two will operate ssb and the other two only cw. Two Polar Bears will
drive up and two will hike the steep 2-mile trail up to the top of the
mountain probably with snow on the ground. If you want a look at the
award that will be mailed out, go to www. wa3wsj . com.

If you want an award, please email or mail your log to WA3WSJ. My
Callbook Address is ok on QRZ etc. Don't send an SASE just your log.

Ron, WB3AAL will hike up and start operating from a tent around 3pm in
the afternoon. Mark, NK8Q and Ed, K3YTR will drive up and probably start
to operate around 6pm. I will start my hike around 5pm and be on the air
up top by around 6:30pm. We will do the hard part, but we need you to
make contacts! Here's the breakdown:

WB3AAL3:00pm CW Only
NK8Q 6:00pm ssb cw
K3YTR 6:00pm ssb
WA3WSJ6:30pm CW Only

3.933 7.040/7.280 14.060/14.280 10.106 +- qrm

To all Polar Bear Ops:
Remember ink freezes so bring pencils!
Believe me I learned this the hard way.

Ron, a sleeping bag might help for your hours up there.

I'm bringing a hot drink with me- hope others do too.

I will bring a dry shirt with me to change into- hope you do too Ron.

We will try to take a group picture of all Polar Bears together - it
should be, let's say, a unique picture.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2005-02-19 Thread Kevin Rock

Howdy Folks,
If any of you are still standing after z tomorrow I will be holding
the first net. The RF may be in ragged shape from all these signals
flying around but things will slow down abruptly at z Monday. I'll
probably not be on the air at all before that time since folks will be
trying to get their last few points but I'll be listening. It is fun to
see how many call signs you can copy in 60 seconds. At first the wall of
sound was so strong you could hear a steady tone. But tonight things have
settled down to a certain pace. I swear there was an AK station racking
up one contact every two to three seconds! I never could get the call
sign because they were well past 40 wpm. Maybe someday :)
The cold is mostly gone; I am left with a cough and a bit less weight.
If any of you need to lose a few pounds this is not the way to go. I lost
ten pounds this week and get dizzy standing up. But I am on the mend and
will be ready to take check ins tomorrow evening. Hope you are all doing
well and having good fortune in the contest if that is your wont. I
simply listen and try to copy a few foreign call signs.

No special requirements or exchanges necessary on ECN just check in and

  Good DX all,

[Elecraft] Re: Wireless Mouse Wish List

2005-02-19 Thread wayne burdick
What's the maximum distance from paddle to receiver with this unit? I'd
want something that would work from across the room (my computers are
*not* right next to the ham gear) and with no limitation on the way the
paddle could be oriented. I might even want to use it while walking
from one place to another in the shack, with a wrist-mounted paddle.

A 900-MHz ASK (amplitude-shift-keyed) transceiver chip might be a
better way to do this, or of course blue-tooth. There are also very
inexpensive garage-door opener receiver/transmitter boards available.
Any such solution would require testing in an HF environment, although
QRP HF levels would probably not be an issue.

I don't quite see the need for a unit that simply replaces the
cumbersome wire from paddle to rig.

No idea how it works. In their photo gallery, they show it with a K2.

I like the idea, but I don't like being stuck with their idea of a
paddle/keyer. Maybe there is some IR TX/RX out there that could be
used.

Guys;

Perhaps a look at the January 2004 issue of QST might prove
interesting. Specifically, the article starting on page 36 titled
Remote Your Morse Key Using an RF Link.

Re: [Elecraft] Ultimatic Keying.

2005-02-19 Thread Rick Dettinger
I would like to see a squeeze option that would give a steady tone when the
paddle contacts are both closed. This would restore keying control to the
operator. I normally use a bug or straight key but use paddles with the KX1
when portable. The bug is more than 5 times as heavy as the rig and does
not travel well.73 - Rick - K7MW

 ..

Confession time, have yet to master fully this new fangled Iambic Keying
thing, so use the twin paddles like a single paddle bug. But the CW is
'mechanical' not like bug produced CW, and a 'friendly' dit daaah dit
 cannot be sent!
